Re: Switch / Firewall / Wireless

2010-11-02 Thread Matthew W. Ross
How many switch ports do you need? 4? 8? More?

What kind of Wireless speed are you looking for?

Need any special features on the firewall? Logging, perhaps? or VPN? Perhaps a
price limit?

The more details on what you need, better the possible responses will be. I'll
throw in the NetGear SRXN3205 for your consideration, as it fits your stated
needs for an inexpensive price.

  SOHO router running DD-WRT.

  (Those $50, 5-port routers are actually a lightly-managed switch
(VLANs); the "Internet" port is just a different VLAN internally.
Speed within the switch is usually fair to good. Wireless speed and
reliability is usually fair to bad. Performance across the firewall
is good enough for most connections. Features vary, but you get a lot
for $50 and free firmware. Would I run a business on this? Depends
on the business. I'd sooner use one of these than one with stock
firmware. I'd put a small office, e.g., handful of users on one, if
they didn't need anything special. Would I run a 100 person company
on one? No.)

You mean like:

I have a Server 2003 DC, and a Server 2008 DC (not R2)

I've found some Powershell stuff that uses the AD module, but all I can find
references R2. Is there a way to get that module for 2008, not R2? Or is
there another way of getting the info I'm looking for easily?

What I'm trying to find is the last login time for a user, to find out if
the account is needed anymore. Doing it one-by-one would be fine, as that's
how I'm doing the first step of this process.

I am a Powershell noob, but very willing, and desiring to learn more.

Thanks.

RE: User last login info

2010-11-02 Thread Malcolm Reitz
You need to get PowerShell v2 for your 2003/2008 boxes. Load the AD cmdlets
and you'll be good to go.

Thanks.

Line breaks blew me up. Also messed up the quotes when editing from my
code. The GetObject line should look like (one line only):

Set lobjUser = GetObject("WinNT://DomainControllerX/TheUserName,User")

You can do this with VBScript/ADSI. You will have to inquire with each
domain controller and take the highest value. The very base code is:

Dim lobjUser, lstrLogons
Set lobjUser = GetObject("WinNT://DomainController1/TheUserName &
",User")
lstrLogons = lstrLogons & "DomainController1 last logon: " &
lobjUser.LastLogin & vbNewLine
Set lobjUser = GetObject("WinNT://DomainController2/TheUserName &
",User")
lstrLogons = lstrLogons & "DomainController2 last logon: " &
lobjUser.LastLogin & vbNewLine
MsgBox lstrLogons

RE: Firewall

2010-11-02 Thread Matthew W. Ross
For fun, a workmate of mine mirrored the wan port on our main switch and ran a
little program called driftnet on his linux box that showed all the images
being accessed over port 80.

http://www.ex-parrot.com/~chris/driftnet/

The program was originally intended to sniff all the traffic on wireless, but
mirroring the wan port did give a simular result. The images that the program
produced was quite enlightening to us about the basic browsing habits of our
district.

It was mostly pictures of shoes and Scarface.

Re: 2K8 DC in 2K3 SBS domain

I've done exactly what you are planning on doing and have had no issues.

David Lum previously uttered:

So it's possible and supported

has anyone here ever done it, any caveats not noted in the KB? I
would be adding a 64-bit R2 DC to a SBS 2K3 (non-R2) domain. The SBS
server has the latest service packs and updates.

RE: Weird mapped drives error

2010-11-02 Thread Carl Houseman
Do the same or different tests. Different computer same user, or different
user on same computer.

If it sticks to the one computer and the one user only, a new user profile
fixes it. You might be able to clean up the registry but if the user profile
is disposable, just dispose of it.

Hi There,

We have a user with and XP machine, ho is having an unusual problem.

He has several mapped drives, and most of them work but one doesnt.

say it is f: on \\server\share

You double click on F: and it give an access denied error.

If you click start and run and enter \\server\share the folder opens.

So he has permissions to access the share, the other mapped drives he uses
all work fine, just this one doesnt.

It may be nothing but the drive letter also shows up in Windows as a folder
not a drive icon, where the rest of the mapped drives show up as drive icons.

We have tried mapping to a different letter and get the same results.

Any one got any suggestions.

I have tried google and all I can find is UNC not working when mapped drives
are.

Thanks

Sounds like you want a Content filter.

We use Lightspeed's Total Traffic Control, and have been very impressed with

I have a college who uses a filter called an iBoss, and he is a fan of that as

Slightly off topic but has anyone come across a webcam that would allow us to
embed a stream view of our office in our site? We have a security one at the
moment that has a built in HTTP server which you can use to watch the office
but it has its own branded site, 4 feeds per page etc. We want something more
like an embedded youtube style live video on our site.

Any ideas which makes do this?

2K8 DC in 2K3 SBS domain

2010-11-02 Thread David Lum
So it's possible and supported
(http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc708131(WS.10).aspx) has anyone
here ever done it, any caveats not noted in the KB? I would be adding a 64-bit
R2 DC to a SBS 2K3 (non-R2) domain. The SBS server has the latest service packs
and updates.

Are these software raid volumes created on and managed by the VM? If so,

The san has 21 FC disks configured as a raid 5 array. There have two
luns configured from this array. All 15 guest machines are located on one
 of
these luns (including exchange). The performance hit appears mainly on
exchange but other servers are suffering as well. The interesting thing is
that IOPS for the entire lun holding the 15 VM's is only around 600 at the
time that the disk busy is around 95%. The disk queue for that lun is

Disk busy warnings buy themselves don't hold much weight, unless of
course there are noticeable performances issues, which you alluded to.
You'll want to capture disk queue and disk latency stats ( avg disk queue
length and avg disk sec/reads and writes). Avg queue depth should below X
(where X equals the number of physical disks. Read/write times should avg
below 20ms and not spike above 50ms.

I'd also recommend running the exbpa and the troubleshooting assistant.

If you can gather I/O stats you may be able to determine if the disks
can handle the load. If it doesn't appear Exchange is stressing your
resources, you may need your SAN monitoring tools to determine if total I/O
(assuming multiple luns share the same disks) are more than the disks can
handle. I'm not familiar with EVAs, but overloading disks in a SAN can lead
to cache flushing which could affect performance of the array itself.
