RE: Microsoft DPM?

2011-06-10 Thread Michael B. Smith
DPM (and any other native VSS application) tend to require a somewhat different
mindset than traditional backup applications.

At this point - I prefer DPM over BE, despite having used BE since...uh...1997?
Around that, anyway.

YMMV.

They both can get the job done.

Subject: Microsoft DPM?

Looking for some feedback on this...

Have typically always used Symantec Backup Exec for backups at customers.
Or for smallers clients, the built in Windows Backup utility. How does
Microsoft Data Protection Manager compare? Cheaper or more expensive?
Easy to setup or not? Advantages/disadvantages versus Symantec Backup
Exec?

Share your thoughts, thanks.

RE: Image Editing software [OT]

2011-06-10 Thread Michael B. Smith
Correct for me as well.

We could manually type in the sequence numbers in 73-80, but it wasn't
automatic.

And given that EVERY time you hit any character (including the space bar), it
took about a third of a second for the mechanical movement to catch up - lots
of people didn't bother. And lots of people who did weren't consistent about it.

I wrote a resequencer in BASM in order to punch sequence numbers on fresh
cards. Read in a deck - write out a deck with sequence numbers. The punch
attached to the mainframe didn't have the same performance issues as the manual
punch.

That way, if you drop your deck, you run them through a card sorter.

2011-06-10 Thread Steven Peck
My wife thought that was funny. Then again, she says my playing computer
games is a good thing too (she gets annoyed if I put the headphones on
during WoW raid night as she likes the background chatter).

Oh course I had four tasks assigned.
1. Get her to the hospital
2. Allow her to crush my hand during delivery
3. Break any cameras that showed up during delivery.
4. Tell (bad) jokes at inappropriate times (well, this wasn't a task so
much as an acknoledgement that it would happen no matter what)

Sadly, I was not given any opertunity to deliver on item #3 as she told
everyone my list ahead of time.

  "End Of Block".

http://www-01.ibm.com/software/globalization/terminology/e.html#x2274851

I think the equivilent ASCII character is ETB (End of Transmission

data structures. They aren't much used these days.

RE: DNS Services with malware blocking?

Ah...I just put an I.T. Garage logo on the block message and my customers know
it's a legit block message. I can see in some environments that not being
sufficient.

Sunbelt's was ClearCloud which they're discontinuing. OpenDNS may be a little
too commercial/ad-laden for my tastes. I guess that's the issue - there aren't
many commercial offerings out there than I know of, but anything free has to
pay its way so you end up with ads/sponsored links etc.

Does anyone have any experience of the various DNS services out there that
claim to block malicious sites?

The usual stuff about layered approach etc. is understood so this is in the
context of one layer. ClearCloud looked interesting but I never tried it, and
as they're discontinuing it there seems little point.

RE: Image Editing software [OT]

2011-06-10 Thread Ken Cornetet
Trivia - that is why FORTRAN only reads the first 72 columns of the input
"deck". This allows the programmer to configure their keypunch machine to
automatically punch an auto-incrementing number in columns 73 through 80.

That way, if you drop your deck, you run them through a card sorter.

Our computer center had a special sorter.

The crying came about when while carrying the 1000-card deck to the

Well, it's trying to access a network resource and with windows it seems it
needs a TCP timeout when it makes the attempt which sort of freezes you.

it over the network shortcut, Explorer will flip out for what seems like an
eternity before giving you access to the cursor again.

I've seen this behavior in many other situations too. Such as having a
network location as an item in the Save As dialog box.

A shortcut targeted to a network resource can't be pinned to the Start
Menu. According to Microsoft, this is by design. Microsoft says pinning is
for frequently used items, not network items. About a billion people have
pointed out that the two categories are unrelated, but Microsoft apparently
just doesn't get it. Maybe they don't have networks in Redmond; I dunno.

As others have said, you have to put something local in front of the
network resource, to fool Windows into working properly. That can be a
shortcut stored locally (targeted at the network resource), or an invocation
of EXPLORER targeted at the resource, etc.

RE: RE: RE: windows 7 forensics

2011-06-10 Thread Joe Tinney
I've used and had fantastic results using the SIFT workstation from SANS
Institute:
http://computer-forensics.sans.org/community/downloads/

I take a DD image of the drive and then develop a SUPER Timeline:
http://computer-forensics.sans.org/blog/2010/03/19/digital-forensic-sifting-super-timeline-analysis-and-creation/

Works great and the end result is a massive CSV file of all activity - NTFS,
web, recent process launches, etc and it is all time-sequenced. I've done this
to track down where and when malware entry occurred on the system.

Good luck!

I've always avoided pinning network locations anywhere on my LAPTOPS because
Explorer freaks out when it can't find the target.

Example, if you have a shortcut on the desktop to a network folder that is
unavail, and you are dragging an item to the Recycle Bin, but happen to drag
it over the network shortcut, Explorer will flip out for what seems like an
eternity before giving you access to the cursor again.

Sorry, I didn't realize Sunbelt's was ClearCloud.

I know that OpenDNS has for-pay options that are fewer/no adverts, but I don't

Websense has a service as well, but they definitely aren't cheap.

I have explorer pinned to my task bar. I can pin network drives to it and
all the pinned drives show up when I right click it. Yes, this is not the
start menu.

claim to block malicious sites?

The usual stuff about layered approach etc. is understood so this is in the
context of one layer. ClearCloud looked interesting but I never tried it, and
as they're discontinuing it there seems little point.

Re: Access form password

2011-06-10 Thread Steven Peck
You should try our answer

Us - "Sounds like you need to budget for another developer for it"
Them - "But it's business critical"
Us - "Sounds like you should be able to find the funding for a position
then."

Now, this doesn't actually always work, but it works most of the time
fortunatly. Partly because we actively scan for access databases on our
network shares and then give them our policy which is, we don't support it
please let us know who your business contact is that does so we know where
to direct issue requests too.

The few occasions tey do make it 'our problem' we help them find the funding
so it can be converted to a more sustainable app on one of the SQL
databases. Then it goes in the end of year reports as a big giant reminder.

A shortcut targeted to a network resource can't be pinned to the
Start Menu. According to Microsoft, this is by design. Microsoft
says pinning is for frequently used items, not network items. About a
billion people have pointed out that the two categories are unrelated,
but Microsoft apparently just doesn't get it. Maybe they don't have
networks in Redmond; I dunno.

As others have said, you have to put something local in front of the
network resource, to fool Windows into working properly. That can be
a shortcut stored locally (targeted at the network resource), or an
invocation of EXPLORER targeted at the resource, etc.

Microsoft DPM?

2011-06-10 Thread jesse-r...@wi.rr.com
Looking for some feedback on this...

Have typically always used Symantec Backup Exec for backups at customers.
Or for smallers clients, the built in Windows Backup utility. How does
Microsoft Data Protection Manager compare? Cheaper or more expensive?
Easy to setup or not? Advantages/disadvantages versus Symantec Backup
Exec?

Share your thoughts, thanks.

Re: Cricket Liu on IPV6

2011-06-10 Thread Roger Wright
I'm fortunate to be invited to 3 - 5 lunch & learn events per month by
a number of vendors and able to attend a few. Often they're at
terrific restaurants with delicious meals, and I always pick up a
number of tips and gain knowledge of new products and technologies in
the process - all on someone else's dime.

Cricket, however, is someone I could listen to all day. I think he
could speak on anything and make it interesting and easy to follow.

Okay, I've Googled this and I've searched through previous threads on this

people have had.

I have an app (home made in PowerBuilder) that runs off a network drive. I want
to add the shortcut to the .exe file to the Start Menu in Windows 7. But, I
can't. I can't drag it. I can't right click and select "Pin to Start Menu"
because that option is not there. The only suggestion I've seen when I Googled
it was to create a folder on the desktop with the shortcut in it, then create a
new toolbar and point it to that folder. That's rather kludgy.

Any way to work around this seemingly bizarre new restriction?

Thanks,

I did try that, but the link didn't appear in the Start Menu for some reason.

For Pinned items on the Start Menu, you need to put the shortcut in
%AppData%\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\StartMenu

Okay, I've Googled this and I've searched through previous threads on this
list, but I cannot seem to find an answer to a question that I'm sure a ton of
people have had.

Thanks,

Evan

I have an app that is just as bad, but here is what I did. I copied the exe to
the local computer, then pinned the to the start menu, or taskbar, or wherever
you want. Then changed the item you just pinned, and removed exe from local
drive. I would love to see another way because I am stuck with this app for

We have had the "cottage-industry" of Access applications across the company I

Thanks everyone for all the pointers. However...I think the database is
corrupted. It can't be repaired, you can't view the database properties, it
throws an index error every time - and according to Google, that points to a
database "corrupted beyond repair". Even though the users are still managing to
utilize it. Somehow.

I think I may try to use this as the starting point for a larger project to get
the myriad small Access databases dotted around the place consolidated into a

Re: Access form password

2011-06-10 Thread Daniel Rodriguez
It may help if you could see the contents of the .df files. There are some
free viewers. DBFPlus comes to mind. You may also need to convert those .dbf
files. DBFConvert probably do the trick for you. That way you dont have to
go hunting for an older version of Access. Then I use a hex editor to look
at those forms. Also, I would look at any vba scripting files, if any.

But, that's me.

Tips or Guides to doing a Video Streaming stress test

2011-06-10 Thread Don Kuhlman
Hi folks.   I have been assigned the task of doing some base tests on how video
streaming performance behaves for several different scenarios across the lan.
This is for users to watch training videos, etc. from their PCs.
I have looked around and found some free tools - LanSpeed Test and Qcheck from
Ixia, that do some stuff on performance.

I also did some research on using perfmon and came up with these counters that
may give some indication of how the machine is doing while testing:

Memory/Available MBytes
Memory/Pages Input/Sec
Network/Bytes Total/sec
Network Interface/Output Queue Length
Network Interface/Packets Received Errors
PhysicalDisk/Total/Current Disk Queue Length
PhysicalDisk/Total/Disk Bytes/Sec
Process/Total/Working Set
Processor/Total/%Processor Time
System/Processor Queue Length

Does anyone have a link or some other guidance as to whether these counters
make
sense or if I should be looking elsewhere?

Thanks!

Get to know your enemy: do you have older records in the company that show
what passwords your developer used at that time, and in this case give you a
hint on what he might have used for your db?

Could be faster than any other (more serious) method.

"the Windows Filtering Platform has permitted a connection"? I found a
reference to turning off audit subcategories by using this command -
auditpol /set /subcategory:"Filtering Platform Connection" /success:

disable it?

Access form password

2011-06-10 Thread James Rankin
Another day, another episode of "I can't believe this has been allowed to
happen" - yet here I am.

We have a department that (unknown to me until today) are reliant on a
database that was built (and still runs in!) Access 97. Yes, you heard me
right. I mean, it only went out of extended support in February 2002, what's
nearly ten years of unsupported software between friends?

However (the plot thickens) it was built and maintained by a developer who
has now left the company. And it needs some administration doing to it. And
it turns out that the form to administer the database is password-protected.
And not surprisingly, as with all problems that seem to have defeated
everyone else, it is now sitting in my lap. The developer can't be contacted
- believe me, short of commissioning a private investigator, I have tried
all I can.

The question is - does anyone know any way I could reveal or reset the
password that is protecting the admin form? It's that long since I used any
form of Access (never mind a 14-year old version of it!) that I am
completely clueless here.

I'm already drafting up a snotty email to go to the business heads here
about the importance of migrating their critical data onto supported
platforms, so hopefully something like this should never happen again (yes,
it probably will, though). But if anyone can think of any way I can get
inside the guts of this ancient database, I sure would be grateful.

TIA,

JRR
