RE: [OT] The infection continues to spread (HP)

2011-08-19 Thread Ken Schaefer
Yes - I agree with what you're saying below. When HP did acquire Palm, the
world wasn't dominated by Android/iOS (well, iOS was pretty big). So, if the
execution was right, there was still an opportunity. The problem was the
execution.

Anyway, all things start from somewhere: Android started from nothing too.

That said, I'm not hopeful about WebOS - certainly not as a mass market
consumer tablet product. Maybe they'll find some niche areas to sell it into.

As I understand it, the only reason for acquiring Palm was to get WebOS. Then
they screwed up by waiting too long to enter the market with a product that was
not ready and lacked app support.

As to the future of WebOS, who else would want it? The HP failure is a major
black mark, whether earned or not, whether the OS is superior or not. The name
of the game is apps. Without developer support and a large catalog of apps,
buyers won't pay a competitive price for a device that may be slightly better
in ways most users won't notice. I wonder how Playbook sales are doing at
Blackberry and whether it can survive, for the same reasons.

They inherited this as part of the Palm acquisition. WebOS used to get quite
good reviews...

You shouldn't expect highly paid executives to understand such an obvious
potential (non) future for a product before it falls flat on its face in the
market.

Think anyone will get fired as a result? Unlikely.

HP is discontinuing their WebOS operations and going to spin off their PC Unit.
I'd say they are having some issues.

RE: [OT] The infection continues to spread (HP)

2011-08-19 Thread Ken Schaefer
1) There's a vast amount of capital tied up in that division - capital that
could be spent on more profitable opportunities
2) By giving shareholders one share in "HP PC Group" plus one share in "The
rest of HP" then those shareholders that don't want to have their money tied up
in a company making commodity desktops can sell out, whilst still having a bet
on the rest of the product lineup
3) Whilst PSG might be profitable now, I personally see the margins just
getting squeezed to the point where it won't be profitable. IBM did the right
thing by getting out (IMHO). Dell's going nowhere with their PC business -
they're trying to find other markets.
4) I don't live in America, so if I was a shareholder, I really wouldn't care
about the "something's wrong with America" thing - I'm trying to decide whether
I should put my money in HP or Google or... . So HP's got to
respect the fact that the owners have choices on where to put their money

Cheers

5% of money is still money. 5% of a very large amount of money is still a
large amount of money. Again, I don't get it. Not the math, not the buzzwords
-- what I don't get is the *mindset*. "It's our largest product line. It's
profitable. Get rid of it!" I suspect this is one of those "There's something
wrong with America" issues.
Our priorities are all jacked up.

2011-08-19 Thread Silvio L. Nisgoski
My biggest complain about them were those proprietary memory sticks that
wouldn´t sit right in the slots. Too much temperature variation, and we got
a bunch of machines not booting and needing the ram to be reseated... still
have two of those here, do not know what to do with them ...

Kayaks! +100
I also had the pleasure of having to support SGI 320 and 540 Visual
workstations.
What a disaster they were. SGI built them for windows 2k only to get delayed
(by MS) and they had to hack up drivers for NT to run them.
We had so many issues,(everything in them was priority except the hard
drive, and cd-rom) in the end SGI literally sent us 20 of each to keep on
the shelf for parts at no cost, then the next week pretty much closed that
whole line down.

I still have one 540 setup at new %work% as a conversation piece.

I think that will depend on how things go down. One hopes HP will want
their customers taken care of.

Before I started at %WORK%, they were buying Gateway PCs. I put a stop to
that as soon as I could, but there were plenty around I still had to
support. Then Gateway sold their business PC division to MPC.
The warranties and support contracts basically evaporated. MPC said call
Gateway, Gateway said call MPC, I got nothing.

Shockingly, that division soon went out of business. It's almost like
their customers didn't trust them anymore. Whodathunkit?

RE: HP going out

2011-08-19 Thread Greg Olson
Kayaks! +100
I also had the pleasure of having to support SGI 320 and 540 Visual
workstations.
What a disaster they were. SGI built them for windows 2k only to get delayed
(by MS) and they had to hack up drivers for NT to run them.
We had so many issues,(everything in them was priority except the hard drive,
and cd-rom) in the end SGI literally sent us 20 of each to keep on the shelf
for parts at no cost, then the next week pretty much closed that whole line
down.
I still have one 540 setup at new %work% as a conversation piece.

I think that will depend on how things go down. One hopes HP will want their
customers taken care of.

Before I started at %WORK%, they were buying Gateway PCs. I put a stop to
that as soon as I could, but there were plenty around I still had to support.
Then Gateway sold their business PC division to MPC.
The warranties and support contracts basically evaporated. MPC said call
Gateway, Gateway said call MPC, I got nothing.

Shockingly, that division soon went out of business. It's almost like their
customers didn't trust them anymore. Whodathunkit?

Not following hockey, generally, but being familiar with it, my first

RE: VMware vSphere 5 Licensing and Pricing Update

2011-08-19 Thread Ben Serebin
Hello All,

My comment on new VMware pricing…. if you knew me, you would
know I’m a BIG proponent of ESXi for ease of deployment, stability, & features.
But, after heavily working with Hyper-V R2 “Core” in a 2 node cluster config
for about a year (recently expanded to 3 node), I’m willing to bet vSphere 5
will cause more harm than good. Danger for VMware is around the corner with
next version of Hyper-V since it comes with async off-site replication for free
among other features. VMware is in BIG trouble. Yes, Hyper-V takes a LOT longer
on setup, but Hyper-V is still cheaper (labor + software) vs the crazy new v5
pricing (& even v4 pricing – software + labor). In light of this VMware price
gouging (aka vTax), I’ll start to push clients to Hyper-V if they need
clustering.

Microsoft details features in next version of Hyper-V

My post didn't mean to suggest or infer any deficiencies in VMware's QA
process. And VMware doesn't necessarily need to be deficient when releasing an
update after GA which may address added functionality that was either left off
or not exactly "ready" for RTM. Because I won't deploy a GA release has
everything to do with my past experience with vSphere 4.0 GA and the breadth of
updates/changes/fixes/enhancements available when U1 became available. I speak
from my own standards and will, more oft than not, wait for Update 1 before I
seriously plan for vSphere 5. This doesn't apply to just installing vSphere 5
and getting familiar with some core nuances and functionality. This also
doesn't apply or need to make sense to everyone, it's just my own perspective
based on my own technical experiences with VMware.

There was also nothing specifically stated that they wouldn't go straight to
production either. [cid:image001.png@01CC5E73.08DA3570] Semantics really, but
my inference was guided towards the the time it sometimes take to deploy a
fully prepared lab environment (in some cases) vs the time it would take for
VMware to release update 1.

I would imagine most deployment approaches will always be governed by the
organizations you're dealing with. And if org X wants to make the move, then
the better business practice would behoove you to move forward while preparing
the org with as much information as possible. If after the knowledge exchange
is done and you and the org are comfortable with a GA release of vSphere 5,
well then rock-n-roll.

And for the record, I'm pretty sure the GA of vSphere 5 is more than production
"ready". I just apply my own standard, based on my own experiences.

Even accounting for the number of changes that might be found in a GA release,
do you have any specific experiences you can cite that would lead you to
believe that VMWare will have been that much more deficient in the QA processes
of 5.0 vs 5.0.1? Or, are you simply adhering to some standard process that
you feel works for you?

Like I suggested earlier, I prefer to tailor my deployment approach to the
specific of the products and organizations that I'm dealing with.

Given that there was nothing in Martin's post which specifically suggested a
production deployment sans testing, I'm rather intrigued that you would infer
such.

environment become time consuming or considerably drawn out. That being said,
considering VMware isn't considerably slow to release their first update to
their GA products, in my opinion, it would take a strong business (read:
financial, compliance) requirement not to wait and deploy their updated product
in my lab environment or pilot deployment. But again, that's my opinion for

New HP, in contrast, sometimes doesn't honor warranties within the
terms of the warranty.

For example, it's a major battle to get them to honor the warranty
on a defective print cartridge, if the printer is out of warranty.

In contrast, their ProCurve division will overnight you a new switch
for a firmware problem, "just in case".

All I would say is look at what happened when ibm sold their pc business
to Lenovo. Without googling, what were the issues then that people were
afraid of? Did Lenovo acquire the warranty business also or did someone
else purchase that?

Way back when I had a Compaq computer that required service and I
remember calling HP for it.

I was just reading all those emails about making hard to crack passwords
(Almost but not quite OT: Passwords). I like Steve Gibson's analysis of why
long passwords are harder to brute force crack than shorter complex ones. But,
I wonder...

Why hasn't anyone implemented fail words? Two or more passwords associated with
your account or whatever. One you use for normal access and is as hard to crack
as you can make it and still be memorable. Then another password that would be
easy(er) to crack that triggers some event? Here are a few scenarios I can
think of off the top of my head:

[] Bank manager forced to open the vault at gunpoint. Use the failword. Opens
the vault and rings the silent alarm.
[] Someone tries to login to your PayPal or bank account and tries your
failword. They get the usual bad password result, but you get a text message on
your cell phone.
[] Someone tries to unlock your iPhone. They try the failword and it gets
locked until you send it a special email or text or 24 hours expire, etc.

Is there some reason this is a bad idea? I can't think of any...

Why hasn't anyone implemented fail words? Two or more passwords

another password that would be easy(er) to crack that triggers some

Well, it is the Eagles, what do you expect?

This is coming from a long time Vikings sufferer, I mean fan. Seems
like we take old-used up Eagles QBs give them a nice season when they
come to Minnesota, and then expect the same in the second season. Oh
wait, we do that with all veteran QBs, now that I think about it.

Cunningham, Favre, George, McMahon. If the pattern holds, the Vikings
should have a great year and then choke sometime in the playoffs.

RE: Why not failwords?

Yep. Biometrics-only or biometrics in conjunction with a PIN/password are
really the best way to go. We *have* the technology to do this.

Subject: Why not failwords?

I was just reading all those emails about making hard to crack passwords
(Almost but not quite OT: Passwords). I like Steve Gibson’s analysis of why
long passwords are harder to brute force crack than shorter complex ones. But,
I wonder…

Why hasn’t anyone implemented fail words?

I can’t think of any…

RE: Looking for web site developing companies

2011-08-19 Thread John Aldrich
Try Netahawk, Dubuque and Packett. They have two offices in Virginia:
RICHMOND OFFICE
One East Cary Street
Richmond, VA 23219
804-783-8140 / 800-847-2674
F 804-783-0098

ROANOKE OFFICE
410 South Jefferson Street
Roanoke, VA 24011
540-345-5403 / 866-677-9817
F 540-345-5414

They do fairly complex sites. Granted they are not SP-based, but still
pretty nice. They don't work cheap, though.

Subject: Looking for web site developing companies

Hi Folks,

I'm looking for recommendations for companies that do web site development.
We maintain a number of web sites here for our various .org sites.

I and my team don't have the time to completely redesign our sites.  We can
maintain and update, but I'd prefer to use a specialized service to assist
with design and occasional support once design is implemented.  We are
implementing an internal Share Point portal, so I'd prefer a SP-based design
since we already use SP.

We are in Virginia, are state and non-profit.  If anyone has any
recommendations, please let me know.

Tom

Well, it is the Eagles, what do you expect?

This is coming from a long time Vikings sufferer, I mean fan. Seems like we
take old-used up Eagles QBs give them a nice season when they come to
Minnesota, and then expect the same in the second season. Oh wait, we do
that with all veteran QBs, now that I think about it.
Cunningham, Favre, George, McMahon. If the pattern holds, the Vikings

RE: Why not failwords?

2011-08-19 Thread Paul Gordon
Yup mine too. - by default ISTR it is the "normal" code +1 - so in any
coercion type scenario, the coerced just enter their normal code +1. - at
the point of entry, this gives every appearance of an alarm deactivation. so
the "coercee" doesn't suspect anything. but behind the scenes, twelve
different kinds of hell break loose. J

But, I wonder.

Why hasn't anyone implemented fail words? Two or more passwords associated
with your account or whatever. One you use for normal access and is as hard
to crack as you can make it and still be memorable. Then another password
that would be easy(er) to crack that triggers some event? Here are a few
scenarios I can think of off the top of my head:

[] Bank manager forced to open the vault at gunpoint. Use the failword.
Opens the vault and rings the silent alarm.

[] Someone tries to login to your PayPal or bank account and tries your
failword. They get the usual bad password result, but you get a text message
on your cell phone.

[] Someone tries to unlock your iPhone. They try the failword and it gets
locked until you send it a special email or text or 24 hours expire, etc.

Is there some reason this is a bad idea? I can't think of any.

RE: [OT] The infection continues to spread (HP)

2011-08-19 Thread N Parr
Exactly, my general train of thought was...

Ohhh HP has a new tablet now. What version of Android is it running?
Huh, Web/O-What?

Like you said, look at Playbook sales compared to IOS/Android.
Blackberry already had an infrastructure of similar devices, market
share and development compared to HP. And HP says "lets go with
something totally different that everyone will have to start over with
and few have even heard of".
Sure we deal with users every day that wouldn't know the difference
between and Android and apple tablet. But for the most part consumers
who are going to drop $$ on a tablet tend to do a little comparison
shopping and would figure out it doesn't run what all the other tablet
in the world do. When the ads started for HP tablet my wife commented
"that looks neat". I told her it doesn't run Android and her reply was
"then why would anyone want it".

As I understand it, the only reason for acquiring Palm was to get WebOS.
Then they screwed up by waiting too long to enter the market with a
product that was not ready and lacked app support.

As to the future of WebOS, who else would want it? The HP failure is a
major black mark, whether earned or not, whether the OS is superior or
not. The name of the game is apps. Without developer support and a
large catalog of apps, buyers won't pay a competitive price for a device
that may be slightly better in ways most users won't notice. I wonder
how Playbook sales are doing at Blackberry and whether it can survive,
for the same reasons.

5% of money is still money. 5% of a very large amount of money is

not the buzzwords -- what I don't get is the *mindset*. "It's our

this is one of those "There's something wrong with America" issues.

This is fascinating and yet explains a recent presentation from them.

We have been toying with VDI and have been looking at several options.

We asked them to come in and present.

This they did. However, they had no formal presentation, slides, nothing.

Just verbal what we should be doing and what they might have in the future.

If anyone is looking or knows of someone who is looking, we will be
interviewing soon for a Sr. level Sys Admin position. Ideal candidate
will have the typical qualifications with an emphasis on Citrix (XenApp

RE: Looking for Position and Positions in Pennsylvania

2011-08-19 Thread Mark Kelsay
Know the area well. I was stationed at Barksdale from 88 – 92. Missed you by
a couple of years. ☺ Bought a house on Princeton Ave in Bossier City the end
of 1991 and got my orders to go to England the next week. Was only in the
house a couple of months before we had to sell it.

My dad was stationed at Barksdale. Lived in Louisiana from 1966 to 1986 less 9
months we wasted, I mean spent, at Columbus AFB in Columbus, MS when he came
back from Vietnam. I now live outside Nashville, TN. Almost where my life
began at the old Smyrna AFB in Smyrna, TN.

Where you at in Louseyanna Carl? I lived in Shreveport back in my Air Force
days. Have to admit I was glad to leave. It was way too humid for my liking.

Cheers,
