You can pass session level execution policy by adding a -ExecutionPolicy
argument to your powershell.exe call.

I have need to running a powershell script for Backup Exec 2012 through a DOS
batch file.
Here is what I have so far:

::Batch File
::powershell

C:\windows\system32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\powershell.exe
"'e:\in01\oper\task\BackupJob.ps1'"
exit
___
BackupJob.ps1
Import-Module BEMCLI | Get-BEJob -Name "BackupJob-Full" | Start-BEJob | exit

Where the BackupJob is already set up in the GUI library on the server.
I get nothing.
The batch file just finishes.
I put a pause after it and I see no errors?
So what am I doing wrong and how do I make it work?
Thanks

I agree with that entirely. I know nothing of powershell but require a
dos batch backup of the server. So I learn bits from you all. And
thank you again.

PowerShell was designed to address 3 major classes of people:

Admins,
Admin scripters,
Developers.

There is feature content for each group and a fairly decent glide path
between the groups.

Truth be told though, if you don't have mastery of "basic admin" use of
PowerShell before you try to become an "admin scripter" - then you are
going to have problems.

This entire thread is just an illustration of that.

RE: SBS Standard 2011 or Server 2008 R2

2012-06-06 Thread Jimmy Tran
All 4 offices are independently ran and do not share any files. It's a
dental office so its not too complex. Although central administration
would be nice, I don't think that is in the road map. However, if the
owner decides to centralize management, I think going the route of
Server 2008 would be the best bet.

How many offices are there? If there are many then integration makes
even more sense. Just because the network is connected doesn't mean
they can't appear to run independent. There are benefits to central
administration/management.

It sounds like I should stay away from wizards...that way they have to
keep me :) The will never integrate the networks because each office is
independent of each other, under different business names as well.
There is no need to integrate them.

I guess I'll just test out the features and see how it goes.

Thanks for the input. Looks like I'm leaning towards Server 2008.

Either that won't last, or the company won't. So I'd try to get them
to plan for eventual integration of the various office networks.
Which again rules out SBS.

RE: Powershell and dos batch

2012-06-06 Thread Damien Solodow
Who reads those? ;)
And yeah, I did read through the ones for the most recent 3.0 RC. I did like
the number of “this will now throw an error because it should have before”

On a related note, any idea how existing modules like Exchange 2010 and the MS
AD module will work with 3.0? I’ll wager the Citrix and VMware ones will need
updates, and I know there is a workaround required with SharePoint 2010…

Here is what I have so far:

::Batch File
::powershell

C:\windows\system32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\powershell.exe
"'e:\in01\oper\task\BackupJob.ps1'"
exit
___
BackupJob.ps1
Import-Module BEMCLI | Get-BEJob -Name "BackupJob-Full" | Start-BEJob | exit

Where the BackupJob is already set up in the GUI library on the server.
I get nothing.
The batch file just finishes.
I put a pause after it and I see no errors?
So what am I doing wrong and how do I make it work?

RE: SBS Standard 2011 or Server 2008 R2

2012-06-06 Thread James Hill
There are many cases where SBS makes sense, including when handled by
clueful IT professionals.

It's a very good product and when used and administered the way it was
designed to be there is no issue. Problems arise when clueful IT
professionals who know AD, Exchange etc. (but not SBS) try and use it as
they would for each of the individual components.

While I haven't touched it in literally years, I've always tried to stay
away from SBS. There are various licensing constraints (e.g., must be a DC
holding the FSMO roles) that can cause artificial headaches. Worse, there
are a bunch of "wizards" and canned configuration and other things designed
to help you, and if you deviate from the SBS way of doing things, they can
fail in weird ways.
SBS mainly seems to be designed for a small company that mostly does their
own IT but shouldn't. So if this client is one of those (mostly does their
own IT, but shouldn't) SBS may be appropriate. But if their IT is handled
by clueful IT professionals, I would steer clear.

How many offices are there? If there are many then integration makes even
more sense. Just because the network is connected doesn't mean they can't
appear to run independent. There are benefits to central

It sounds like I should stay away from wizards...that way they have to keep
me :) The will never integrate the networks because each office is
independent of each other, under different business names as well.
There is no need to integrate them.

I guess I'll just test out the features and see how it goes.

Thanks for the input. Looks like I'm leaning towards Server 2008.

Either that won't last, or the company won't. So I'd try to get them to
plan for eventual integration of the various office networks.
Which again rules out SBS.

Absolutely - within 15 minutes of seeing the article that ASB posted,
and I've been thanked by email and in person, by at least 5 of our
staff today.

It might not be our web site, but
o- It's used by businesses to find and contact us
o- it's used by some here to find and work with customers of ours

Now, if it were Facebook, or a bank in Utah (or eharmony, which seems
to have had their password hashes posted at the same time as and by
the same people who exposed LinkedIn), I doubt I'd send out anything -
let them burn, for all I care. They are not business-related, and more
importantly they're not related to *our* business.

Windows 7 Pro 64-bit

I have a user who has significatnt issues writing to optical discs, both CDs
and DVDs. The jobs fail to complete, the discs get stuck in the drives (have
to use a paper clip), the temp files get hung, etc. She's tried using Windows'
native Send To method as well as Roxio and CDBurnerXP software and has similar
issues with all. When another account logs on these problems disappear and
disc burning is successful. I'm inclined to think user error is a problem but
can't see anything she's doing incorrectly while watching her.

The drive has already been replaced and I've cleaned out her %temp% folder.
What else can I check?

RE: Powershell and dos batch

2012-06-06 Thread Michael B. Smith
PowerShell was designed to address 3 major classes of people:

Admins,
Admin scripters,
Developers.

There is feature content for each group and a fairly decent glide path between
the groups.

Truth be told though, if you don't have mastery of "basic admin" use of
PowerShell before you try to become an "admin scripter" - then you are going to
have problems.

This entire thread is just an illustration of that.

I blame MBS. ;)

I think it’s because the newer versions are fully backward compatible so there
is no reason for parallel installs. So by putting it in the same directory
scripts and the like invoking powershell aren’t broken by new versions.

Is the 4.2.2.3 hard-coded or is that the IP of the system being checked?

FWIW on XP the FOR syntax Scott C. provided to scavenge the OCX version didn't
work. The following syntax works on XP from the command-line to collect the
version number:

for /f "tokens=1-5 usebackq" %i in (`filever
"%SystemRoot%\system32\Macromed\Flash\Flash*.ocx"`) do set FLashV=%m

Actually, it seems that LI hashed the passwords without salting them so a
simple rainbow-tables attack on the database should reveal all the short
passwords and all the common passwords (like "password1234" and
"linkedinpassword"). If you have a long enough password I doubt they'll be
able to find its hash in time.

That said, I did change my LI pwd, including lengthening it somewhat.

I recommend, quite strongly, that you buy yourself a book. A beginner's book
such as "PowerShell In A Month of Lunches".

In Win8/Server 2012 everything is PowerShell. The GUI's have far few
capabilities than the command line, and you can be certain that that is the
future.

If you haven't learned PowerShell yet - you are already behind the curve.

RE: SBS Standard 2011 or Server 2008 R2

2012-06-06 Thread David Lum
Guilty as charged :-)

Even at that it only failed because I tried to do an SBS-y thing after treating
it non-SBS-y for years. I think the real takeaway is either treat it "native"
-OR- SBS-like but don't mix and match. SBS2011 makes the "non-SBSy" stuff
kludgy so you REALLY don't want to mix and match.

Notable with SBS2011:
1. Once you run the Connect to Internet wizard it automatically creates a DHCP
scope and activates it.
2. It automatically configures WSUS
3. With wizards you can move where Exchange, SharePoint, and User shares are
stored, even after you've had the server running for months

SBS2011 is almost NOTHING like SBS 2003. Not sure what the concern is of the
SBS server having the FSMO roles, that doesn't prevent you from standing up
another DC. In fact when this environment was SBS 2003 I was able to extend the
schema and stand up a 2008 R2 DC.

I say stick with the wizards and everything will be more consistent .

Ben,

I will have to disagree with you on this. In my experience I haven't had many
issues with the different SBSs compared to regular Windows Server. Each has its
place and I agree it will depend on the individual client's needs.

Yes the "wizards" are an issue with a lot of people but think of it as a way to
configure the server consistently. Is it that much different from someone that
runs a batch of scripts setting up a server? Couldn't running those scripts be
called "wizards"?

As for failing in weird ways I'm sure David Lum can attest to the fact of what
happens when you try to admin a SBS box like a regular Windows Server box.
Right Dave? :-)

While I haven't touched it in literally years, I've always tried to stay away
from SBS. There are various licensing constraints (e.g., must be a DC holding
the FSMO roles) that can cause artificial headaches. Worse, there are a bunch
of "wizards" and canned configuration and other things designed to help you,
and if you deviate from the SBS way of doing things, they can fail in weird
ways.
SBS mainly seems to be designed for a small company that mostly does their own
IT but shouldn't. So if this client is one of those (mostly does their own IT,
but shouldn't) SBS may be appropriate. But if their IT is handled by clueful
IT professionals, I would steer clear.

The problem is that when things don't go according to plan, or the
canned design simply doesn't fit the needs of the business, you have
no recourse. You can't *change* things to fix them. If you have a
script or just a written procedure, you can change that for needs.

RE: SBS Standard 2011 or Server 2008 R2

2012-06-06 Thread Mike Hoffman
If they are going to be at 20 users but no more than 25 for a few years then
SBSe (Essentials) might be fine for you. It requires no CALs for the users and
if you need a second server for SQL/Sharepoint then you add the Premium Add-On
along with Cals for SBS Premium (only for those using the SQL features).

You get the backup features of Windows Storage Server and the remote access for
remote desktop so that you can manage all the sites remotely. The wizards
generally do a lot more than just add a user to AD - they run checks as well so
you know everything is running fine. When they fail it is usually because of
simple (from an admin point of view) errors which if left untreated might
generate issues a lot later.

There is talk of an upgrade path from 2011 to other server products if you have
active Software Assurance on the server, so that would give you the option of
upgrading later.

Either that won't last, or the company won't. So I'd try to get them to plan
for eventual integration of the various office networks.
Which again rules out SBS.

You haven't seen SBS2011's wizards, they really make your life easier, not
harder. Well, once you get over that for most SMB's there's no need to get
overly complicated anyway. :-)

Or if you use an SBS products and DON'T use the wizards, be prepared for
unexpected things to break. It's similar to making a registry change to a
system for some workaround, then have some MS patch not work six months down
the road because it was expecting that registry setting to be something more
OEM.

Hey, it happens :-)

Here is what I have so far:

::Batch File
::powershell

C:\windows\system32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\powershell.exe

exit
___
BackupJob.ps1
Import-Module BEMCLI | Get-BEJob -Name "BackupJob-Full" | Start-BEJob |
exit

Where the BackupJob is already set up in the GUI library on the server.
I get nothing.
The batch file just finishes.
I put a pause after it and I see no errors?
So what am I doing wrong and how do I make it work?
Thanks

RE: SBS Standard 2011 or Server 2008 R2

SharePoint comes in two versions, free, SharePoint Foundation Server, and
paid, SharePoint Server. SharePoint Foundation most likely will handle all
their needs.

For server 2008 R2 you have to configure SharePoint from scratch, while with
SBS, SharePoint is setup for you with the basics as part of Setup.

Depends on the exploit. If the exploit was "disgruntled employee
took a backup tape with him when he quit", that might be harder to
repeat. ;-)

Another thing to consider: If someone can steal 6.5 million hashed
passwords, they may well have had enough access to do a lot of *other*
things, too. Such as plant backdoors or timebombs in the system.

Re: 6.5 Million Encrypted LinkedIn Passwords Leaked Online [REPORT]

I believe your understanding of what "hash" means here is incorrect.

It's a best practice to store passwords as hashes.

If one stores passwords in cleartext, anyone who obtains a copy of
the password database now knows the passwords. They can use those
passwords to login, or try them on other sites.

So, passwords are hashed. A hash is a cryptographic function which
is not easily reversible.

For example, say I have a password of "drowssap". That might hash
to "939df92f0634b2e1dac11807724db138c8d6b98b". It's computationally
easy to feed "drowssap" into the hash function and get the hash. But
it is computationally expensive to take the hash and reverse it to the
original password.

When I set or change my password, I enter the password cleartext,
and their system hashes it, and stores the hash. Later, during login
authentication, I enter my attempted password, their system hashes
*that*, and compares it to the stored hash. If the two hashes match,
I must have entered the same password[1], so I'm legit.

Now, if someone steals the hashed passwords, that's not great, but
it's much less serious. They cannot use the hash to login to my
account -- the system only accepts passwords. They cannot easily
convert the hash back to my password.

The exception would be that attackers could pre-compute hashes for
possible passwords -- especially common passwords. These are called
"rainbow tables". The attackers could then look up hashes from the
stolen database against their rainbow tables. This might let them
find all the accounts using "drowssap" as a password, for example.

The effectiveness of rainbow tables can be significantly reduced by
salting passwords before hashing. Reportedly, LinkedIn's system did
not do this. So that's too bad.

-- Ben

[1] Technically not true, but good enough for this explanation.
Google "hash collision" if you want to know more.

RE: SBS Standard 2011 or Server 2008 R2

2012-06-06 Thread Art DeKneef
Ben,

I will have to disagree with you on this. In my experience I haven't had
many issues with the different SBSs compared to regular Windows Server. Each
has its place and I agree it will depend on the individual client's needs.

Yes the "wizards" are an issue with a lot of people but think of it as a way
to configure the server consistently. Is it that much different from someone
that runs a batch of scripts setting up a server? Couldn't running those
scripts be called "wizards"?

As for failing in weird ways I'm sure David Lum can attest to the fact of
what happens when you try to admin a SBS box like a regular Windows Server
box. Right Dave? :-)

It sounds like I should stay away from wizards...that way they have to

There is no need to integrate them.

Either that won't last, or the company won't. So I'd try to get

Which again rules out SBS.

Re: 6.5 Million Encrypted LinkedIn Passwords Leaked Online [REPORT]

2012-06-06 Thread Kurt Buff
Um, that's not the way it works...

If they have the hash, they can reverse it with enough effort (read:
rainbow tables or brute force).

However, if you change your password, the has changes. In fact, for
some cipher systems, one of the design goals that a change of one
character in the encrypted text should produce a change in 50% of the
characters of the resulting ciphertext.

Thus, changing your password in this case is a particularly good thing.

What's more problematic is that they (LinkedIn) are reported not to
have use a salt for their password hashing. If true, that's a very
stupid mistake that will make reversing the password hashes much
easier. See, for instance, this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salt_%28cryptography%29

I have need to running a powershell script for Backup Exec 2012 through
a DOS batch file.

Here is what I have so far:

::Batch File

::powershell

C:\windows\system32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\powershell.exe
"'e:\in01\oper\task\BackupJob.ps1'"

exit

___

BackupJob.ps1

Import-Module BEMCLI | Get-BEJob -Name "BackupJob-Full" | Start-BEJob |
exit

Where the BackupJob is already set up in the GUI library on the server.

I get nothing.

The batch file just finishes.

I put a pause after it and I see no errors?

So what am I doing wrong and how do I make it work?

Thanks

Either that won't last, or the company won't. So I'd try to get

Which again rules out SBS.

While I haven't touched it in literally years, I've always tried to
stay away from SBS. There are various licensing constraints (e.g.,
must be a DC holding the FSMO roles) that can cause artificial
headaches. Worse, there are a bunch of "wizards" and canned
configuration and other things designed to help you, and if you
deviate from the SBS way of doing things, they can fail in weird ways.
SBS mainly seems to be designed for a small company that mostly does
their own IT but shouldn't. So if this client is one of those (mostly
does their own IT, but shouldn't) SBS may be appropriate. But if
their IT is handled by clueful IT professionals, I would steer clear.

RE: SBS Standard 2011 or Server 2008 R2

2012-06-06 Thread David Lum
Who is doing day to day-ish administration? SBS2011 is wizard-driven (you can
do things the 2008R2 way if you want but trust me, you don't want). The backups
are similar, but not identical. SBS2011 wants a dedicated volume for backups
(it hides the backup volume form Explorer, for example).

Do they want remote access? SBS2011 comes with Remote Web Workspace which lets
the get to files/folders w/out requiring VPN for example (think RDS Web running
on SharePoint and you get the idea), that might be useful to them.

Killing me man. Killing me.

I open a dos window

I change directory to the powershell directory

I execute powershell -file "myfile.ps1"

I get nothing.

Top it off I am trying to execute some BackupExec powershell commands in
myfile.ps1 and I am not sure they want to play nice either.

Really just an example of a powershell being executed within DOS is all
I need to get this going.

I have need to running a powershell script for Backup Exec 2012 through
a DOS batch file.

Here is what I have so far:

::Batch File

::powershell

C:\windows\system32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\powershell.exe
"'e:\in01\oper\task\BackupJob.ps1'"

exit

___

BackupJob.ps1

Import-Module BEMCLI | Get-BEJob -Name "BackupJob-Full" | Start-BEJob |
exit

Where the BackupJob is already set up in the GUI library on the server.

I get nothing.

The batch file just finishes.

I put a pause after it and I see no errors?

So what am I doing wrong and how do I make it work?

Thanks

Server will just be for the usual DC, DNS, DHCP, file sharing and WSUS.
They will have no more than 20 per office and each office will be setup
independent of each other.

What other bells and whistles you get with SBS? The user doesn't want
to invest in additional money for a backup solution so I'll be using
windows server backup. Are they the same versions?

Did you run the set-executionpolicy like I mentioned?
If so, what is the exact error you are receiving when running the batch?

I get nothing.
The batch file just finishes.
I put a pause after it and I see no errors?
So what am I doing wrong and how do I make it work?
Thanks

Re: SBS Standard 2011 or Server 2008 R2

2012-06-06 Thread Steve Ens
SBS is great if you want/need Exchange and all the other "toys" you get
with SBS. If you just need Windows plain jane, then buy Server 2008 R2 (or
wait a month and get 2012).

2012-06-06 Thread Jonathan Link
If you don't need SBS, don't buy SBS. Last time I priced SBS, it was more
expensive than just Windows Server. So, buying Windows Server, assuming it
meets all your needs seems like it would be the automatic choice.

Unless I'm missing something here.

Even though this report has not yet been validated (at the time of my posting),
I would highly recommend that you change your LinkedIn password now. If you
were using that same password on another internet site, now would be a great
time to choose a separate password for that site (and other sites) and use a
password manager like Password Corral, PassKeep or LastPass to manage them.
