Thanks for the help. The problem apparently was caused because I had my
email client open. As soon as I closed it, when I clicked on the link, it
opened my email client and worked just fine. I don't understand why that
should have caused the problem. I'll do some research to see what was going

RE: DFSR

2013-04-29 Thread Tim Evans
It depends.

There are 2 parts to DFS- the DFS namespace and DHS Replication. You can use
the namespace without doing replication, but you can do replication without the
namespace.

I use the DFS namespace on all shares so that when I replace a file server, all
of the links to it will still work. I.e. DFS namespace domain.com\dfs\share
points to \\server\myshare. I can plug in
\\newserver\newshare and people can till access
it using the same DFS path.

DFS replication doesn't do you any good unless you have multiple locations
involved, so I don't use it there. The other thing to keep in mind with DFSR is
that it doesn't do distributed file locking, so even though you have the data
in multiple locations, you can't let people edit the same files from different
locations. I use it mainly for backup and RO data for my users.

I resolved my DFS issue from last week (pilot error :)). My question is this:
Is there a reason not to leverage DFS for most file shares? It seems to me like
it's a good way to be able to down a server (read: patch and reboot) and keep
the file shares available, but I also know with something that's new to me
makes it easy to overlook something simple.

I'd guess it's not a good idea to DFS *every* file share, just mission-critical
ones? In the scenario I care about the sites are all connected at 10Mbit or
better and there's no more than 40 users connected to any one server at a time
and 55 is the total user count. All storage is local, no SAN /iSCSI, etc.

Seems like the only downside - as long as you're paying attention to things

The big deal with DFS (IMO) is the "double-edit" issue. Two people can edit the

I'm having a problem with signing up for the new list. I'm using Windows
Live as my email client, and I keep getting error messages each time I click
on the second link to the new NTSYSADMIN list. Anybody have any ideas? The
message says I'm low on resources, but I don't believe that! There was
another message that came up just once stating that I needed to update
Windows Live to continue.

I think the KnowBe4 list is the imaginary one, right now.

I need to pop over there and check it out….. Just hate the web based forums……
maybe we can get them back on the new listserv.

Many of the Exchange swynk people are on the Microsoft forums; some of them
have moved on (into management, ownership, and  other career changes); some of
them have retired.

I really miss the old Swynk exchange list.  Great group of people, good time
had on the list and even more fun meeting up with them at MECs.

Rods lists at myitorum have a long history in tech lists that go way back to
when most of the old Swynk lists of from the late 90s to early 00s migrated
there. Swynk had a great sms and exchange community and I know all the SMS\SCCM
people went to myitforum. Not sure what happened to the exchange community but
it never seemed the same.

Question – we’ve had both Rod and Ben offer to host, and both have given links.

Do those wishing to continue a mail-based (rather than web-based) forum go with
Rod’s?  Is that what the agreement seems to be?

Thanks to both Rod and Ben!

Totally agree on the Z10, it is a super phone. The only problem is that there
are no apps yet for it. Like a Windows phone, but only worse.

Hopefully, the apps will come, cause it is a great phone.

FW: Potential List Move

2013-04-29 Thread Michael B. Smith
I posted this on the Exchange list, and I might as well post it here too. Just
in case someone has missed it. :)

From: Michael B. Smith [mailto:mich...@smithcons.com]
Sent: Monday, April 29, 2013 12:50 PM
To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues
Subject: Potential List Move

Folks -

As was mentioned here late last week, Stu mentioned on the NTSysAdmin list that
that list was going to be shut down. And he said it was happening soon: as in
tomorrow. Despite an email to the proper person at GFI, I have not been able to
determine whether that affects this list or what the actual "drop dead" date is.

Rod Trent, of myITForum (owned by WindowsITPro, that is Penton Media) has set
up replacement lists for both Exchange and for NTSysAdmin. If you are not
familiar with myITForum, they run MMS (Microsoft Management Summit) and have
run Windows-focused mailing lists for many years.

For insurance, if for no other reason, I encourage you to go register
yourselves for the Exchange list (and the NTSysAdmin list, if you are on that
list as well).

The list is available via email and via the web. So both options are available
to you.

The sign-up is at: http://myitforum.com/myitforumwp/services/email-lists/

Hope to see you there.

Regards,

Michael B. Smith

I interpreted one of Rod's statements to mean his system can provide
both a web interface and an email interface to the same forum, so I
think we may have the best of both worlds.

RE: End of month plan B for list shutdown.

2013-04-29 Thread Steven M. Caesare
I believe that Ben’s offer was to blog about where the new list home might be
if we didn’t get the transition details completed before the Sunbelt List
implodes in spectacular fireball of mediocrity and scorn.

But then again, reading seems to be a lost art, so I could be wrong.

Several years back I subscribed NTSYSADMIN and ExchangeList to
. Partly because Friggin' Lyris is bad
at archives, too, but also in case the list ever died. If you wanted
to, you could find the oldest message there, and then inject anything
you have that's older into that archive. You would need to submit the
messages to arch...@mail-archive.com with their original headers (or
an approximation thereof -- it will need at least the
To/From/Subject/Message-ID headers, I'm sure).

  Cool. Thanks, Rod!

Suggestion: Rename from "NTSysADM" to "NTSysADMIN". If we keep the
list names exactly the same, then Bingle searches for "NTSYSADMIN"
will find both sets of archives.

Rods lists at myitorum have a long history in tech lists that go way back to when most of the old Swynk lists of from the late 90s to early 00s migrated there. Re: End of month plan B for list shutdown.

2013-04-29 Thread Pete Howard
Rods lists at myitorum have a long history in tech lists that go way back to when most of the old Swynk lists of from the late 90s to early 00s migrated there. Swynk had a great sms and exchange community and I know all the SMS\SCCM people went to myitforum. Not sure what happened to the exchange community but it never seemed the same. From: "Kennedy, Jim" To: NT System Admin Issues Sent: Monday, April 29, 2013 10:44 AM Subject: RE: End of month plan B for list shutdown.

Rob’s list has picked up a few peeps already. It is fast, it is both email and web so people can do it the way they want. Consensus seems to be Rob’s.

Do those wishing to continue a mail-based (rather than web-based) forum go with Rod’s?  Is that what the agreement seems to be?

RE: End of month plan B for list shutdown.

2013-04-29 Thread Kennedy, Jim
Rob’s list has picked up a few peeps already. It is fast, it is both email and
web so people can do it the way they want. Consensus seems to be Rob’s.

Question – we’ve had both Rod and Ben offer to host, and both have given links.

Do those wishing to continue a mail-based (rather than web-based) forum go with
Rod’s? Is that what the agreement seems to be?

Thanks to both Rod and Ben!

RE: End of month plan B for list shutdown.

2013-04-29 Thread Rod Trent
Same here. Personally, I prefer email, but we’ve found the split is about
50/50, i.e., 50% prefer email, 50% prefer web based forums. That’s why we keep
both.

Also, of note, myITforum was recently acquired by Penton Media (WindowsITPro),
so there’s a LOT of additional support for the list from a solid, respected
organization.

I agree with you about the Active sync cert. We just use a self signed cert for
the time beeing, and it did'nt like that. Both iCrap and various Droids works
fine with it.(The upside: Don't have to reply work related mail.) :-)
Apart from that I realy like the Lumia. Nokia Drive is the best there is.

Hello all,

Since I left GFI (and previously Sunbelt), I've been working on a number of
interesting projects in the IT management space. One product I'm particularly
pleased with is FactFinder Express, a new way to manage and monitor systems.
Designed for the IT shop that has typically internally-written apps and more
complex infrastructure, it gives the IT manager (and developers) a far richer
way of determining just "what is going on" and getting to the root cause of
problems.

Here's a link if you'd like to take a look:
