VM list with create date

2012-04-05 Thread Ben N
vmware 4.1 / 5.0

anyone know of a way to find out when a vm was created? better yet, a
list/report on when all VMs were created? I'm looking in both vCenter 5.0
and vCenter Operations 5.0 and can't seem to find a way.

we don't do device management (yet). OWA/EAS is enabled on all accounts by

Re: iPhone user can still send emails after being disabled in AD

2011-11-08 Thread Ben N
AD replication is set for 30 minutes since the DC we would have disabled
the account is at a different site than the DC local to exchange. We've
ruled out people enabling her account that had access. We checked msg
trackign log and it shows delivery right at the time it was in her sent
items.

it just boggles the mind, wish we had our DCs logging archived and set more
granular to see if that gives any clues, but they already overlapped.

Could be some huge delays on hardware orders across all vendors?

2011-10-27 Thread Ben N
I just got this from my Dell Rep. Makes me wonder sometimes if they just
want me to hurry up and order things i have coming up or if this is a real
concern for future orders.

We have an urgent matter and want to ensure I’ve sent this message to all my
clients and addressed the current situation to plan accordingly for your
projects. If you have any orders that need to be deployed within the next
month. Please get those orders in ASAP to ensure we can try to meet the
deadline for deployment. There’s currently an issue with our suppliers due
to the floods in Thailand on HD’s ETC. This is vendor agnostic across the
globe and only have a limited supply of Drives, before we start seeing very
long lead times on builds and equipment shipping, Suppliers are also stating
their will be an increase in price due to supply constraints, below is a
link about the supplier issues currently taking place at this time.

If you have any questions regarding this, please let me know.

Re: Juniper Networks Switches?

2011-10-27 Thread Ben N
I love JUNOS. just learned it about a year ago with the SRX Firewalls and
the EX 4200 switches (i have 4 SRX and 12 EX4200). it is a joy to use after
using Cisco IOS for sooo many years. The web GUI is slow, but the CLI is
super fun to use. There isn't a huge difference either between FW and SW
like there is with Cisco IOS for ASA and SW.

Re: Backup Network and Windows Failover cluster

2011-10-24 Thread Ben N
so if you have a failover cluster, and it moves from one node to another, do
you have to do anything to make backups work again? I'm guessing your client
IP for the backup network changes with nodes, but that is acceptable since
it always hits the same backup server no matter which node it's on. I'm not
sure this will work for my Commvault though.. hmmm...

Backup Network and Windows Failover cluster

2011-10-20 Thread Ben N
I have some situations where i really need to start using a backup network
so i'm not affecting network customers are using. Ideally i'd like to assign
an IP address on a new network to a SQL Failover Instance to be used for
this private backup network and would follow it no matter which node it
ended up being on. I would then just use the local HOSTS file on my backup
server and on each node to resolve to the new IP on this new backup server.
Have you guys done this before? I haven't been successful with it yet.

Re: VMware vSphere 5 Licensing and Pricing Update

2011-08-18 Thread Ben N
So... what does this mean? we have to wait for an update to v5 before this
new vRAM entitlement is out?

[i]Note:
this change will NOT be reflected in the native vCenter Server 5 vRAM
reporting capability at GA time; it will be included in a future vCenter
Server 5 update release. However, before such update release is available,
customers will be able to use a stand-alone free utility for tracking vRAM
usage that will reflect this change.

Re: Lync 2010

I implemented Lync back in December, having done a few OCS installs.. Lync
was much better by far; highly recommend it. I too looked into the schema
changes, and found them to be benign should we want to back out of it after
all.

Re: Opinion on iSCSI switch to use for Equalogic SAN

2011-06-30 Thread Ben N
Hmm i haven't had this problem before. I know you have to be careful on
JUNOS upgrade, you don't want to use their latest and greatest for sure. I
have 8 x 4200 switches in my DC with many VMware hosts, no issues so far,
they are under on VC. I was thinking of changing to two VCs like you have
just so i can have that redundancy in check too.

Good to hear other using Juniper out there :)

try creating a test webpage file with some random text in there, and browse

Opinion on iSCSI switch to use for Equalogic SAN

2011-06-28 Thread Ben N
I was thinking of getting a pair of the PowerConnect 7024 switches for our
SAN.

Has anyone had any good or bad experience with a setup like this? It will
only be used for iSCSI. I could go the Juniper or Cicso route, but don't
need all those extra features or cost.

Resetting Domain Administrator password - Server 2008 R2

2011-06-16 Thread Ben N
So i have an old set of servers as VMs. They had their own AD servers as
well, but no one remembers the logon or work here anymore.

I am trying to go through and reset the the domain administrator account
password. I have already blanked out the machine useraccount, so i can
reboot, F8, pick directory restore, and logon that way.

I'm using the srvany.exe method, using a complex password. It doesn't seem
to work. Anyone have luck with this in the past?

I'm following directions from here:
http://www.petri.co.il/reset_domain_admin_password_in_windows_server_2003_ad.htm

But i thought it was odd he had D:\temp\cmd.exe instead of
c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe... So i using Robert STrom's script file
instead and that looks good to me.

I've checked the registry setting for the service, looks good. Service looks
good, although i had to manually check that interactive option on the Logon
(2nd) tab.
But every time i boot this server up.. wait a few minutes. my new password
isn't taking. I wish i knew if there was some kind of error message or
something so i can see if there is am mistake somewhere.

or i'm open to other ideas on how to do this same thing.

Any firewalls ? Either windwows or something else in between. Make sure
ports are open. Try telnet to port 445 to be sure.

Private video server

2011-04-18 Thread Ben N
I'm looking for some software that can do this.

1. domain users can upload video to an internal webpage we host, or maybe to
a file share
2. video is accessible from a HTTPS URL that we host that prompts for domain
username/password (basic auth over HTTPS most likely on an IIS server)
3. video is played using an embedded flash/silverlight player

software could convert videos to a single format if required to play in a
web player
We want to support command file types, ie. mp4, mpg, avi, wmv, etc..

any ideas or solutions you already have implemented?
I don't really feel like hiring out devs to do this, hoping something like
this already exists.

I find it is just easier to use the 1 nic on each server. Simpler is better.

Exporting from Lotus Notes (NSF) to Outlook (PST)

2011-03-30 Thread Ben N
Anyone have a tool they have used, free or not. I basically am looking to
get calendar/contacts from some ex-lotus notes users into Outlook/Exchange.
I'm hoping a good conversion tool can catch all the recurring appointments
correctly. Using more standard formats for exporting just won't cut it. We
really need native NSF to PST conversion.

remote computer not setup on domain user

2011-02-18 Thread Ben N
so we had a laptop sent out to a user, and the person who set it up forgot
to logon as that user to cache their credentials and create the profile.
We use Juniper SSL VPN.

any ideas on how we could logon as a new domain user on this computer? The
issue with VPN is that it has to be started AFTER logon.
I think there is a MSGINA we could enable, but i heard it was difficult to
setup and not something we want to use in general.

ideas?

Re: ArcMail?

2011-02-09 Thread Ben N
oh yes.. years of experience.

my old company bought the biggest one they had. U3120 IIRC. It was great
that it wasn't a per user cost.. but the yearly maint fee for hardware and
software support was alot of money.

Once you get it loaded with years of emails.. it can be VERY slow for
users.. like 5-10 minutes for a single search. it could be that way with all
archive appliances though with millions of emails to search through.

it's tough to say one way or another. i guess you get what you pay for.

oh yeah the biggest problem is backup. be sure you have a ton of TBs to back
it up. We were having issues with backup early on.. and then the 3ware raid
controller corrupted our data... we lost data. :( We basically had to redo
an import back from exchange to start over. I think they took steps though
to make sure this didn't happen. it was a problem with 3ware and not their
software.

I don't think you'll be able to beat the price.. be sure you like that web
interface :) Sorry to be so brief and all over the place. Let me know if you
have any more questions. We bought it in 2008, and they still have it. But i
think my old boss is ready to dump it because its so slow and backup is such
a burden.

automatic delete log files

2011-02-08 Thread Ben N
We have a few custom dev'd products we host that generate tons of log files.
They cannot be turned off. (please don't ask why :) ) so after a few weeks
or so, the C: drive fills up.

I am curious what creative solutions people have done out there to deal with
similar issues like this? There is the obvious choice of running some
process/batch that deletes them on a schedule using task manager. anything
else?

infortrend iSCSI

2011-02-07 Thread Ben N
anyone here use them before? They are pretty basic in features, and
inexpensive when compared to other options. guess you get what you pay for.

My question to those that have used them, can you setup it up in such a
fashion as to have LUNs that have the ability to grow later on if you want
to?
So far i can only make one logical drive and one logic volume and partition
that out.

Have you had any luck with bonding all 4 ports together with etherchannel?
any other advice? :)

Re: domain joined laptops that aren't on your network

2011-01-11 Thread Ben N
great idea about the script to notify users.

i will have to see about upgrading our exchange to SP3 then. I wish OWA
would notify when they logged in too... I wish the VPN client could/did too.

TS isn't an option for us as that access requires VPN to be on.

Juniper SSL VPN does have a local client (Network Connect using java
runtime) that runs and you can see the entries in route table (route print).
But it's only running while logged in, like any other app. I heard there is
a MSGINA add-on you can use, but it makes more issues than it fixes.

I think it would be ideal to warn users 5-7 days ahead of time and to ask
them to change password via TS or OWA. and will try to go down that route.
If anyone has working examples in your enviroment. i'd love to see them if
willing to share. Otherwise, i will do some searching around too.

Thanks everyone who replied. You guys are an invaluable resource. I wish i
could give back more.

yeah locking, and unlocking with new password did the trick. sweet! Years
wasted not knowing this :) maybe it's a windows 7 thing, i don't know. So
what about when a user's password expires? What do you do for these external
users then? Far as i know Juniper SSL VPN won't let them logon. I think they
can logon to OWA, but it doesn't really tell them they need to change the
password.

domain joined laptops that aren't on your network

2011-01-11 Thread Ben N
So we setup domain joined laptops and then ship them out to users that work
primarily from home. They then use SSL VPN (juniper SA) to connect back to
us, but these laptops never actually make it back to our physical network in
most cases. We have these people change their password in OWA or via RDP to
a server, but that doesn't reflect back to the domain joined laptop they are
on until one day they actually show up at one of our offices

I had thought being on VPN, that it would sync up with the domain enough
that their current domain password would be required the next time they
logged into their laptops, but this isn't the case.

Any ideas?

Re: vSphere Networking

2010-12-05 Thread Ben N
I see. And why do you want your iSCSI network to be accessible in your LAN?
I was confused initally that you were out of NICs based on your design and
wanted your VM Mgmt in your iSCSI network.

On Dec 5, 2010 2:23 AM, "Paul Hutchings" wrote:

12 NICs is more than enough- I got 12 simply as it's easier to have surplus
from day one.

As for assignments, tbh I think there will be some trial and error there,
but I'm leaning towards something along the lines on each host of:

vSwitch1
3 NICs (1 onboard and one on each quad card)
Port Group 1 - vMotion
Port Group 2 - Management/VM Network

vSwitch2
2 or 3 NICs
Port Group 1 - iSCSI (setup with multiple VMKernels and multi-pathing)

The 10gbps link between switches will tag the vMotion and iSCSI VLANs
between the switches and the two locations.

Not sure whether to go to the lengths of having the Management traffic on
its own VLAN or not - I'm not convinced I need it for performance reasons
nor for additional security in our environment.

CORAID AOE experience

We are considering investing in some CORAID boxes in hope to grow/purchase
more as we need it. Going to get SRX box and a VSX box as well i believe to

Anyone have any pros/cons with hands on experience?

I have concerns about AOE, I don't' see anyone else doing it. It's not iSCSI
that's for sure being a layer 2 only tech. The company seems to be growing
though; still it worries me.

Server raid config ponderings

2010-07-16 Thread Ben N
I have a new Dell R710, with 10 (2.5inch) x 300GB SAS drives. (dual quad
core with 48GB RAM)

The Hyper-V guests i'll be putting on here are really going to just be old
physical servers that i want to retire. So not much production use. There
will be a few important servers, like some Win2k3 IIS SMTP servers, but not
too much traffic. Also a test domain that has Exchange on it with only 2
active mailboxes. stuff like that.

Hard Drive config? I was thinking of doing Raid 10 initially with all
drives, but i'd be without a hot spare. Not liking the idea of getting a
spare ahead of time or waiting for one if i didn't. I was then thinking of
Raid 5 with a hotspare.. But i am nervous about the possible write
bottleneck.
I just want to get as much space as i can, but not suffer the wrath of my
guests.

Has anyone had a similar config like this with Hyper-V and done Raid 5 with
SAS drives?

Didn't they also buy them for all the patents they have? Could make good use
out of some of those.

Re: Dell MD1000

2010-04-28 Thread Ben N
We have about 6 of them total here. They are pretty good for the money. They
have two places in which to plug in the external SAS cable. We have the Perc
6/E cards for the servers that have these attached. Fits 15 drives. We have
some configs where two servers share the same MD1000 too. There is a switch
you use to split it. so one MD1000 controller has 7 drives and the other
controller has 8 drives. This is static, you don't get the pick the drives
or how many. We have a few that are all 750GB SATA and some that are all
300GB SAS.

Re: WAN over ethernet?

2010-03-31 Thread Ben N
We have both QMOE (Qwest Metro Optical Ethernet) and XO MPLS.

I like the QMOE because i control the routing and it's really fast and
reliable. They put in a switch on my sites and all my QMOE sites are just a
private VLAN on their network. If they already have a QMOE Switch onsite
like in a big shared building, they'll just have you run ethernet/fiber to
them depending on the distance.

MPLS is a pain for me though. Even though we have our own routers, i have
ask them to add any new LAN Subnets and it takes them 24 hours to put a
route on their end so i can start using those new LAN IPs...
Although one nice thing about MPLS is it can use just about any medium. I
have 1-4 T1s bonded in some locations. Mostly 2xT1 for 3Mb.. some 4XT1 for
6Mb. I got some 10Mb locations (they put in a box that plugs into 7xT1s) and
they hand it off to me via 10Mb Ethernet.

I would say go for the Metro Ethernet if you can.. it's good stuff. :)
going from a T1 to 100Mb is crazy awesome!

Re: SBS 2003 Server and growing temp files

2010-03-08 Thread Ben N
these large tmp files are in C:\windows\Temp. Some of the file names are
DST199.tmp, DST146.tmp, DST15A.tmp.. etc...
Last week they were each half a GB in size.. after the latest reboot. they
are now 1GB in size. I'd say the rate the last i checked was about 2MB every
second. Once the tmp file gets to a 1GB it makes a new one.
I run process monitor and see that it's store.exe that is involved.
IISRESET will clear them.. but they just start up again in no time.

I also did set the global send/receive setting for how large message can be
a few days ago to 30MB. unlimited before. Obviously that wasn't it...

This isn't my server really.. i just am supporting it / helping out when i
can. It sure isn't a configuration i would have picked out :)
C: drive is a Raid 1 and they have a standalone drive as E: that i see their
backup files on there. Looks like they using built in SBS backup and its
working ok. recent "Small Business Server Backup (01).bkf file. Circular
logging is NOT turned on and their exchange log files are doing ok.. not too
many of them. Looks solid from that stand point.

SBS 2003 Server and growing temp files

2010-03-05 Thread Ben N
helping out on this server for someone, i have full access to it remotely.

The C: drive is filling up to the point where it just runs out of space..
takes about 24-36 hours for it to happen between reboots.
I come to find out it's these large tmp files in C:\windows\Temp. Some of
the file names are DST199.tmp, DST146.tmp, DST15A.tmp.. etc...
Last week they were each half a GB in size.. after the latest reboot. they
are now 1GB in size. I'd say the rate the last i checked was about 2MB every
second. Once the tmp file gets to a 1GB it makes a new one.
I run process monitor and learn that it's store.exe that is involved.
If i restart the SMTP service.. nothing happens/changes. they continue to
grow.
If i run IISRESET, then the log files disappear.. but will eventually start
to come back.

any ideas?

+1. Backup AD and do it. I have never had issues with schema updates like
this.

Have done this at 20 locations so far with no issue.

Did this a few times for different reasons with no issues. Just make sure
you backup AD before ...

What the log showing? Do a live log and see what it says. Great thing about
isa is its logging to troubleshoot.

What I have found though, is if I remove my custom "ARCserve" protocol

server can
now talk to the ISA 2006 ARCserve Backup Agent?
