Also, if you're still short on space you can run the Optimizer program to
move the log directories to another drive that has more room to grow.

Though it does not exactly apply in this case, there is a trick I picked up
that can sometimes help in drive full situations. If it is a logfile, or in
the cases I've used it for, the transaction logs for Exchange, compress the
folder they are in. This allows you to start the services again, run a
backup, clean/clear the logs, and then uncompress the folder again. The
performance hit from compression is tremendous in a production environment,
but it can get some free space to work in for recovering the server or at
least getting a current backup made before rebuilding.

Hi all,

I came in to find our primary partition on our exchange server full. There
are 3 folders in c:\exchsrvr\imcdata named 'in', 'log', and 'out'. The 'in'
and 'out' folders each contain 1.30 GB of data in some type of log file
form. The 'log' folder contains 760 MB of data. I do not know the
structure of exchange very well, and I am wondering if I can delete the
files in these folders. Will they re-replicate? Will this kill the
exchnage server?

These seem to be the individual transactions that have been processed
through the exchange server, but they do not remove themselves. They are
not my users mailboxes because I have them setup on another larger
partition. Does anyone know what these files are for sure?

Thanks in Advance,

Matt Oppermann

Yes I have had that problem.  In my case it
was related to the particular version of McAfee running and the Version of
Dats.  I finally found and downloaded the latest Service Pack from McAfee
for the Corporate Version 4.5 it is actually Service Pack 2.  This
resolved the problems we were having.  I believe that if you are using
dats above 4130 this will happen without this Service Pack.

That should do it. You may need to keep a reverse lookup entry for your
mail server though. Some mail servers will not accept mail from a server it
cannot reverse resolve.

for the anonymous user but ASP's always prompt for authentication. After
authenticating, the ASP loads fine. So my ASP's are working, just not as
an anonymous user. Other HTM, HTML's work fine as an anonymous user. Both
IUSR_username and IUSR_machinename have RX permissions to these ASP's. Any

RE: Sending 0ut 0f 0ffice replies w/ Outlook

2001-09-26 Thread Bunting, Jeff

The problem is that the Outlook rules only run while the client is open.
The change Server processes the OOO rule when your mail arrives there. If
you left Outlook running and set a rule to auto reply to all messages
(excepting your mailing lists) with an OOO message I think it would work.
You'd also have to have it periodically connect to the mail server.

The weak side to this arrangement is if your computer crashes, someone else
closes Outlook, you have a power outage, etc. then the auto reply stops
working.

That was my impression, too, but I was hoping that there was another
way. It seems like rules should be powerful enough to accomplish this

  You
know, I violated a cardinal rule of mine - don't post something if you can't
back it up.  I did have a reference and now can't find it.  I did
find a similar exploit in the Yahoo messenger.  I'm still pretty
confident I did read about either a real attack via the icon, or at least a
proof of concept, and I will keep looking for it.  Anyway, the below is
an exploit against an IM, so it shows it is vulnerable.

  From
  http://www.ca.com/virusinfo/encyclopedia/

Yahoo Pager/Messanger Buffer OverflowThere is a buffer overflow
problem with Yahoo Messenger that leaves the user vulnerable to remote attack.
The problem arises due to a lack of appropriate bounds checking on the length
of a URL that is received from another user inside a message. Unfortunately,
due to this oversight, it is possible for unprivileged and possibly hostile
remote users to execute arbitrary commands by overwriting the EIP (return
address) and filling the URL with malevolent code. The hostile code could then
be actioned when the unsuspecting target host clicks on the URL.

Two things come to immediate mind:

  1) Many IM clients allow for file transfer.  Depending on your
overall security policy this in itself can be an issue.  Even if you
allow people to transfer files, the IM client then becomes a point of
security control.  For example, with AIM, it is supposed to ask the
user if it is ok if their chat partner sends them a file.  How long
do you think it will be before hackers manage to bypass that
"confirmation"?  Further, then they bad-guys could then just send a
backdoor program to the hard disk.  Or just pick up sensitive data
  from the computer.

  2) There has already been at least one IM based virus - done by
embedding malicious code in an icon smiley face.  This becomes
another area where the anti-virus vendors have to keep
  up.

I'm sure there are other reasons as well, those are just the 2 that
come to my mind before finishing my first cup of
  coffee.

I have been a member of this list for about a month. We are a small company
and I don't have the benefit of a large IT dept so I thought I'd throw this
question to you guys. My personal PC is a Windows ME PC. Today it started
doing something really weird. About every two hours it just kind of stops. I
mean, it still works and all ( although there is no more Internet access)
but it is very, very slow. Can't hardly move the mouse and I have to
shutdown too get it back. It's weird because it goes south almost like clock
work every 1.5 to 2 hours. I don't have a virus, I am fairly certain of
that. It actually happens all of a sudden, yea, I sat here and waited for it
to happen. It doesn't seem to be a gradual thing, I mean, it doesn't get
progressively slow, it happens all at once all of a sudden. It is a royal
PITA.

Any ideas? :

Thanks,

I know half the camp says the only way to recover from NIMDA is to do a
fresh install, but I can't right now. I will soon though.

In the mean time...

I am 90% done with cleaning my IIS server. I have it back on the network,
but I am blocking all traffic to and from it at the firewall. As I check
the logs, the IIS server is not trying to port scan other IP's. When I do
my virus scan however, there are 60 .htm files that say they are infected,
but can not be cleaned or deleted. When I try to manually delete them, it
says access denied. I do have full admin rights on the machine, and I am
doing it locally. I can not set the security to full access for the admin
on these files either.

Is there another "brute force" method I can try to get rid of them?

When I edit the files, they look fine. I did not see the text referring to
readme.eml.

RE: Exchange Server Directory Export

2001-09-05 Thread Bunting, Jeff

I've used gawk (Gnu AWK) scripts to manipulate directory exports. It's
fairly simple to pick up and is pretty handy for these types of things.

here's an awk script that will do this:

-
#extract Display Name and email addresses from Exchange directory dump

BEGIN {FS="\t"}
{
print $4 "\t" $9
}

--

I use the tab character as the separator in the directory export because
there are sometimes commas in the other fields which makes parsing the file
more difficult. This script expects Display Name to be in the 4th field
position and Email address to be the 9th field (which is what my Exchange
export defaults to). You could make the script more robust by searching for
the field headers so it would work if the exports aren't all in the same
format.

RE: NSLOOKUP

To answer #1, in nslookup, "set timeout=X" to number of seconds you want.

However, the timeout you're getting is most likely because you don't have a
reverse lookup zone. Two seconds is generally plenty of time for a
response.

for #3, is that server your secondary DNS?

are marked as read only.. I have verified they are the only one that have
the file open but what I did notice when I got to the server AD and look at
open files I see the user has the files open twice. So I went to their
workstation which is a win98 client I verify they have only made one attempt
at opening the file. I then go to the server and check how much time the
file is open and sure enough it shows that user has the file open twice. So
I go and close the file to only find there was only one file open. What I
have had to do as a work around is have them save as a different name this
allowed them to save the file now this is not the preferred method of doing
business

"Act as master browser", or some related syntax, is chosen by default on

since you have Win 98 machines floating around, i would check to make
sure they are not acting as master browsers when the server is rebooted

I have a small network: W2K Server SP2 with 2 NICs one for internal and
one
for cable modem that is shared. A bunch of WIN98 clients. Things have
been
running smooth for a while and all of a sudden none of the clients can
be
authenticated through the server. When I try to go into manage user
accounts
I get the following message: "Naming information cannot be located
because:
The specified domain either does not exist or cannot be contacted.
Contact
your system administrator to verify that your domain is properly
configured

system administrator and I have no clue what to do. Please help me.

RE: IIS question

2001-08-21 Thread Bunting, Jeff

IIS will cache ASP pages, but I don't think it caches HTML. IE will cache
pages and not necessarily refresh them when you ask it to. IIRC,
SHIFT-clicking the refresh button will force a reload of the page.

Hello!

We are running IIS 4.0 on an NT 4.0 SP6a server. Our web person has a
strange problem from time to time. She edits her pages with Front Page
2000. Sometimes when she edits a page, the changes do not show up on the
site. Even if you refresh your screen. Usually, everything works fine.
The problem does not seem to affect any particular page. It can happen to
one one day, and a totally different page the next time. It has been a
while since the problem occurred last. The way I have gotten the pages to
display correctly is by rebooting the server. This seems a little extreme
for some simple editing. Am I missing something? Are these "wrong" pages
being pulled from a cache some where???

Not
related to your current problem, but you need to have a higher level Exchange SP
(SP3 plus hotfix, or Sp4 should include this) for the latest version of

  It can't be Code
Red... Until that machine actually goes live, port 80 is blocked to outside
traffic (and I am toying with the idea of not using port 80 when it goes live
anyways), besides the Index Server service is disabled. Not patched (not my
choice, people higher up make decisions I can't argue with) doesn't mean
totally abandonned. I update the McAfee virus scan definition list whenever a
new comes out, I have GroupShield running on Exchange (updated just as
lovingly), I ran three all-files virus checks, on top of the on-access scan,
since having this problem, I've rebooted twice (which should have taken care
of Code Red if it had been an issue) and I've also ran the Code Red scanner,
  all to no avail.

  Hello,
My IIS4 server has been behaving strangely for
the past four days. It is not a mission-critical unit (yet) as it runs
only the users' default home page when they start IE though it was
supposed to go live in a week as the IIS for OWA. On to the
  problem...
All IIS services (NNTP, FTP, HTTP) are stopped.
I click on one of them at random and hit Start. Nothing happens. I click
Start again after a few seconds. The service in question will start and
function normally, however anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes later, it'll stop
again. There is no message in the log file other than a notice in the
Security log that the IIS account logged in and out at
  start/stop.
Besides IIS, that box is running Win NT 4 SP6a
Server (no patch) and Exchange 5.5 SP1 (no patch) and it acts as the
  BDC.
I've roamed through the Microsoft KB (not easy,
what keywords do you use to describe this when there's no message in the
log) to no avail. Anyone out there with a suggestion ?

The /interactive switch is only necessary if your job needs to interact with
the desktop. If your batch file is only copying files then you do not need
this.

RE: Scheduled Tasks

2001-08-17 Thread Bunting, Jeff

I don't think my last post was very clear. What I meant to say was that
your job needs to open a command shell in order to run the batch file. When
you run a batch file by double-clicking it, Windows will start cmd.exe first
and then run the batch. Otherwise you have to manually start one. When it
runs as a scheduled job cmd.exe is not automatically started.

try changing the job to this:

cmd /c "C:\Program Files\wirename.bat"

Your batch file needs to open a command shell in order to execute its
commands:

cmd /c "C:\Program Files\wirename.bat"

RE: STRANGE undeletable directory

2001-08-17 Thread Bunting, Jeff

No, you misunderstood; I'm not trying to remove a directory. I was trying
to figure out *how* they are created. If you look at the log xylog posted:

07:55:14 217.128.73.112 [11]MKD com1.scanned.by.zog+++/+++/ 257

it appears an anonymous FTP user created this directory. I was
experimenting on a couple of machines here but couldn't get them to create a
directory that starts with "com1". Jason showed me how to do it from a
command line, but that doesn't work via FTP. I tried some variations on it
but haven't hit on anything yet.

Did you try the POSIX utility rm.exe from the resource kit?

If you don't solve it soon, I've got a coworker who has solved it in the

This is what I was talking about earlier when it was suggested the server
was hacked because of the funny directory names. I was speculating there
might be a way to create those directories with the normal permissions given
to the anonymous account in a write enabled directory. The original post
about the server with the "aux" directory could very well have been hacked,
I just wasn't sure if the presence of those directories in a public FTP
folder was enough evidence to jump to that conclusion without looking at the
logs.

I did some experimenting and found I can't create the
"com1.scanned.by.zog+++/+++/" directory under IIS5. Perhaps it can be done
in IIS4? I'm running Serv-U FTP on all of the IIS4 machines so I can't test
it there. The "+++COM2" and "null.upload" are legal though and can be
deleted by normal means.

On a related note, I've been getting some of the same people connecting to
my server, some warez guys from France. I was watching their activity
closely for awhile because they don't have download permissions from the
uploads directory yet they continued to upload files which didn't make a lot
of sense to me. I saw attempts at downloading, but nothing to indicate they
were successful or coming in by other means, so I've just started banning
their ip ranges because I'm tired of cleaning up all of the garbage on the
ftp site.

way to create those directories with the normal permissions given to the
anonymous account in a write enabled directory.  The original post about
the server with the "aux" directory could very well have been hacked, I just
wasn't sure if the presence of those directories in a public FTP folder was
enough evidence to jump to that conclusion without looking at the
logs.

I did
some experimenting and found I can't create the "com1.scanned.by.zog+++/+++/"
directory under IIS5.  Perhaps it can be done in IIS4?  I'm running
Serv-U FTP on all of the IIS4 machines so I can't test it there.  The
"+++COM2" and "null.upload" are legal though and can be deleted by normal
means.

On a
related note, I've been getting some of the same people connecting to my server,
some warez guys from France.  I was watching their activity closely for
awhile because they don't have download permissions from the uploads directory
yet they continued to upload files which didn't make a lot of sense to me.
I saw attempts at downloading, but nothing to indicate they were successful or
coming in by other means, so I've just started banning their ip ranges because
I'm tired of cleaning up all of the garbage on the ftp site.

Subject: STRANGE undeletable directory
Oke guys i have the following question.
A customer has his own w2ks box. Now he asked me to look at his
machine because he had a problem
I logged in and looked at the problem. The first thing i saw
that here was an ftp abuser. So i kicked him out.
But when i was going to delete the directories he made I
stumbled upon the strangest problem i've ever seen since a long
time.
He made a map in the login directory that looked like
this:
pub---
    |
    Com1--

|

Pub

|

Aux

Aux (yes two times an identical directory)
It says "The parameter is incorrect" when i try to delete it.
Looked at the settings and everything. Still undeletable.
Any ideas guys.

RE: chronic problems

2001-08-15 Thread Bunting, Jeff

I bet its the beer on the weekends that alleves the neck and shoulder
problems. Try keeping a cooler by your desk and see if that helps :-)

Anyone know how to shake the chronic neck discomfort? It's my job to
sit here, write code and administer this network, yet the neck/shoulder
discomfort has been with me for 10 months, and seems to get better on
the weekends (when I'm not working), then Monday afternoon and Tuesday
it starts back up again. I've changed everything from desks to chairs.
I even stretch all the time. Doesn't help. Been to chiropractic for
the last 4 months, message therapy, physical therapy for 3 months,
acupuncture for crying out loud, and nothing helps. Yes, I get plenty
of exercise, I'm on a summer league baseball team.. Even had an MRI and
they told me everything was fine. Only way I can get it to feel better,
is if I'm not working. But I have to make a living somehow eh? College
students need all the bee.. money they can get =) 21 years old is
too young for this crap. Am I just allergic to work?

Anyone? Please? For the love of god? .. Figured I would ask here
since back/neck/shoulder problems are no stranger to people in the IT
industry :)

I accidentally deleted one of our DNS entries from our DNS manager. Is
there an easy way to restore it? Maybe from tape? NT 4.0 server with

You can find out the originating mail server by looking in the message
headers, but there is no requirement to have a return address.

I was wondering if anyone can tell me how I can find out the email address
of an individual that sent an email to one of our users. The inbound email
address was incorrectly spelled and Exchange forwarded a NDR to the sender,
however there is no record of the senders address.

My user would like to know the sender's address.

RE: AT COMMAND PROBLEM

I should have clarified my original statement.
You can do that, but then you'll have a username & password in plain text in
the batch file which usually isn't a good idea.

NET USE shall work if you specify a user and password :

net use x: \\server\share /user:adomain\asuser apassword

However do not try to mix the same letters in the gui and AT batch, and
always disconnect at the end of the batch

net use x: /d

RE: AT COMMAND PROBLEM

NET USE won't work under the local system account. You'll need to run the
job under another security context (assuming you have the new scheduler
that lets you do this). Alternatively, you could change the account
scheduler runs under and create a share to use that has appropriate
permissions.

OK the local system account has no network access, that is why it has that
name, Local means local not network. You need to either assign the Scheduler
Service a network account or use the GUI task scheduler that lets you assign
network permissions on a per job basis ( start->run->\\[server-name] and u
will see a scheduled tasks folder ...)
