RE: Windows File Archive

2012-03-08 Thread Cesare' A. Ramos
Some of you on this list need to get out more or understand what the purpose of
a professional exchange is, as it is my understanding these lists are for. At
times we all need to bounce things off each other, as no one person has all the
answers.

In addition, questions are simple at times there is no need for high level of
complexity to impress anyone.

Thanks for the help Michael and Joseph, clearly you guys read the subject on
the e-mail.

The problem with you damn do-gooders trying to answer his question is:

* he hasn't stated what system he's working on,
* or copying to,
* or what he's tried,
* or what he's considered.

Is robocopy a windows only solution? (All I know it as, and I'm not interested
enough to look it up). Suppose he's on unix, linux, or mac? (I understand some
people use those?). Or even some old fashioned big iron or something in-between
like an AS/400 (yes, I know what they're called now)...

I realize it's not likely, given the third-grade nature of his question. But
after all, he does work for a company billing itself as 'Your Technology
Solutions Provider'.

So be careful, folks, he's a 'professional'.

Shit, for all I can tell from the original post, he's trying to copy PDF's from
his SAN to his iPhone or something. Via his Outlook Server or Linux Email or
something.

Actually, I apologize. Carpet boy was probably smarter. And yes, I realize how
dumb that sounds.

FFS.

Hellos all.

Looking for a utility to scan a storage server and copy off files that have not
been accessed in the past 180 days to an external archive solution.

Any thoughts?

After further research and testing with the users iPhone it is actually an

Going to perform some research but may just remove the Gmail account and

I'm looking to replace my aging (and flaky) separate wireless Keyboard and
wireless mouse at home. It's hooked into a PS/2-only KVM. I would like to
get a new keyboard and mouse combo, but they all seem to be USB-only these
days. Is anyone aware of a place where one can purchase a single USB (F) to
dual-PS/2 (M) adapter? I know you can buy them the other way (2 PS/2 F to 1
USB M) all day long, but in my searching on the web I have not found any
such adapter as I am trying to find.

Thanks

RE: Data drive on Server

2010-07-12 Thread Cesare' A. Ramos
Alright guys..

The only thing left to check and find to see if there is some sort of secret
folder that we cannot see. At this point it looks like we are going to move
all data off the partition and delete it then move data back.

It is a new server that we are managing that is what adds some fun.

Thanks.

Either hidden folders/files with permissions tweaked so that you don't have
access, or possibly system restore turned on and consumed space in the System

Mornings all.

Stumped on this one.. Not sure if it is a Monday morning thing or the IT
gremlins are getting to me.

Have a server that the E drive (data drive) via Windows Explorer has a total
size of 54.3GB with 1.61 GB free. There are 2 folders in the drive. If the
total size of the 2 folders are added, it equals approx 24GB. So the question
lies where are the other 30GB of data hiding? All files and folders are being
displayed. Going to run Xinorbis to see if it gives any further information.

Any thoughts or insults would be appreciated as it may jar my mind...

The only folder showing access denied is that of System volume information via
TreeSize but 30GB for this seems unreasonable.

Windows SBS 2003 User right

2010-06-09 Thread Cesare' A. Ramos
To all:

Have a quick question for you all.

We have a new client that is running Windows SBS 2003 with BES on the same
server, not our choice and we will be changing this. In the interim though
there is one user, the owner nonetheless, that the BlackBerry Administrator
user keeps losing the 'Send As' and 'Read' rights thus the user then cannot
reply to messages. We log in enable the rights, restart BB Router service and
all begins to work.

Within 30 minutes, the rights are lost again. We have edited templates and
such for user and group rights but have not had success in keeping change
static.

Any thoughts.
Sincerely,

Multi-Site thoughts

2009-11-18 Thread Cesare' A. Ramos
Hellos.

Wanted to bounce something off the group to get some thoughts.

We have a client that has 5 sites and a main / corp site. Currently they have
local file / printer servers at each site that are also hosting local DHCP. We
have recently implemented 100MB meshed metroe among all sites and they now want
to remove all servers from the remote sites.

We have no concerns from a data perspective but where we have been bouncing
back and force is as to the DHCP for the remote site systems. Each remote site
is about 5 to 10 users, so we are leaning towards static IPs to minimize
complexity from use of an appliance or something for DHCP.

What do you guys think?

Removing primary AD server or PDC from domain?

2009-07-12 Thread Cesare' A. Ramos
Hey guys..

We have hit a new one here that we are not familiar with and have been doing
some research. We have some thoughts based on the research but wanted to
bounce of the group to see further input.

We have an environment that has 2 locations. They had 2 Windows 2003 servers
at one location and 1 at the second location. One of the servers at the
primary location was acting as the role holder for AD and PDC basically. That
server went offline and cannot be recovered. That being the case the other 2
servers are having issues replicating and such.

>From experiance, we are familiar with DCpromo and such but the issue is we
>cannot DCpromo from a server that is not there.

Our goal is to transfer or assign the roles to one of the existing servers to
allow us to address the network issues. We are trying to do this without
building a new domain and having to reconfig user systems and servers.

As stated, we are wrapping up research so wanted some input..

Thanks all.

Experience with Nuvox yes.

We were on and had a few clients on FDN, prior to they merged with Nuvox. We
had great success both partner and service with FDN. With Nuvox, the service
has been lacking both on the customer support and actual bandwidth. Again this
is our experience.

Currently we are dealing with some contractual issues that they seem not to
understand the changes to the account and this goes back for 3 months of back
and forth.

We have been working with Paetec and the support is great. What has been
impressive to us is that you will always get a human when you call them for
support or questions.

Just my thoughts.

Service Travel fees

2009-03-24 Thread Cesare' A. Ramos
Hellos to all.

Hope everyone is having a good Tuesday thus far.

Have a question for all service providers and clients out there in e-Mail list
land: What are you currently paying or charging for travel to and from clients?

To the clients out there, what would you find unreasonable to pay?

We are currently evaluating this to add to our service invoices but do not want
to be unfair to the clients.

Thoughts appreciated..

SMB question..

2009-01-26 Thread Cesare' A. Ramos
Hello all.

We are having an internal tech discussion and wanted to have some thoughts from
others. The thoughts can be either opinion or reality.

We have a handful of small clients, less than 50 users (50 is an average. The
majority are under 20) that are currently running a single server that is
acting as AD, file, print, IIS, DHCP, Internal DNS, and Exchange 2003 server on
MS Windows 2003 standard server.

From the books, I can agree that this may be pushing the hardware, if not sized
correctly. The servers are all running qty 2 dual core processors, 4 to 8 GB
of RAM, and over 500GB of available storage with all running.

The internal conversation / discussion that we are having is that a single
server cannot run all these items as it will lead to issues and error in the
server. One of the guys, states that he feels that services such as server
will become unstable.

Is MS Windows SBS and option yet but not a reality..

Thoughts..

?? on Spyware 2009

2009-01-14 Thread Cesare' A. Ramos
I know this is not the Vipre nor CounterSpy thread but wanted to get feedback
from others on this one.

We had a system that was running CounterSpy and had the latest patches but the
all wise user that was using it, somehow chose to installed Spyware 2009 as
they made the decision they were not protected. The application installed and
Counterspy was disabled. That is where it began..

We tried some scans with the machine being up using CounterSpy, Vipre, and
Malwarebytes. We came across different issues. We made the decision to pull
the drive and run the scans from a host system with the drive connected as a
slave. Vipre found some issues and addressed them. We then ran Malwarebytes
and more malware was found including Spyware 2009. We reran Vipre but reported
that all was clean. We ended up using Malwarebytes and all was cleaned.

I understand that there is no silver bullet but I would think that if Vipre
found Spyware 2008, which was also on the system, it should have atleast found
Spyware 2009.

Thoughts.. Has anyone come across the Spyware 2008 / 2009 or Anti-Virus 2008 /
2009 family?

RE: Cisco ASA Assistance

2008-11-14 Thread Cesare' A. Ramos
Here is what I received from my Cisco guy.

ONE

The Cisco ASA CLI for all idle connections is the following would change
it to 15 minutes

 timeout conn 00:15:00 half-closed 0:10:00 udp 0:02:00 icmp 0:00:02

TWO

But, since they come from the world of switch/routers should you have
the interface address configured you must then use the interface keyword;
example.

-access-list OUTSIDEIP extended permit tcp any host SERVERIP eq smtp

+access-list OUTSIDEIP extended permit tcp any interface outside eq smtp

(In the ASDM you just type "outside" without the quotes for destination).

NOTE from Research:

"I found the problem. When you use the ASA GUI to make rule changes, it
doesn't put the correct syntax on the rule. Instead of access-list outside_acl
extended permit tcp any host Email2003 eq https; I was getting access-list
outside_acl extended permit tcp any eq https host Email2003 eq https

Deleted that rule, put the right syntax, and it is fixed.

Thanks to all who read and helped. " exerted from

THREE

it is a FrontEnd, BackEnd, or just a single internal server.

Hope this helps.

We've been users of AVG for a couple years now but have started looking for

They all claim to be the best so I'm hoping for a non biased take on it.

Ditto

There are cheaper gigabit switches out there that advertise the
abilities the OP requires, but the HP 1800 series is the only one that
doesn't have some stupid asinine limitation:

Linksys "managed" switches can't be managed if you don't have IE6, and
*if* it has a console port it can only be used to set the IP #

Dell "web managed" switches (the PowerConnect 2700 series) won't let you
assign an IP # to any VLAN other than VLAN1

etc.

Used it many of times. No real gotchas at all. Quick and friendly, but
I would make sure you have a good backup whenever doing a major
disk/partition change.

I have never used it in a software raid or spanning scenario. Its
always been HW Raid expanded, then Windows see free space and we just
gobble it up using diskpart.

RE: GB switches

2008-04-17 Thread Cesare' A. Ramos
Agreed with past posts with regards to the 1GB thought.

We have rolled out Asterisk, 3Com NBX, 3Com VXC, Avaya, and Cisco. Never saw
the need for 1GB switches at all end points. But would highly recommend POE
functionality.

As per switch, I am on the same snob group as Phil. I go ballistic whenever I
see or hear an office running a DLink, Netgear, or Belkin. We have had great
success with 3Com (primarily 3Com 4500 POE family) and Cisco. Of course 3Com
is a bit lower in cost then Cisco.

Lates.

Subject: GB switches

Perhaps a wee bit OT, and I know there are some of you who sell and
service Cisco. However...

Currently most of our network is on fast ethernet. (We have a couple of
racks, each of which has a small GB switch to tie the servers in that rack
together.)

We are soon to dump our NEC PBX and go with VOIP. (It will _not_ be Cisco
or Avaya VOIP.) We need more robust switches...

Currently, we have about 100 desks, each with an XP Pro PC and a phone. We
will be going with VOIP phones (Polycom) rather than "soft phones".

NOW, although we have some of their products and appreciate them, none of
us are "Cisco people", either by devotion or in knowing how to manage
them. We have some folks recommending Cisco GB switches. We have another
group recommending (highly, and some of them are our equivalent in the NYC
office) Extreme Networks BlackDiamond switches.

Does anyone "out there" have enough experience with the products of both
companies to be able to tell us the advantages of each? For example,
might the Extremes be easier for a non-certified user to do port
management? Anyone come across any tests as far as reliablility (both for
HW failure and for dropped packets), etc?

Thanks!

I will admit repairs on a Xerox are expensive, however the maintenance
contract is not that bad. Well maybe compared to other printers it is a
little high, however compared to the cost of the actual repair it is not
too bad. Our users like the visual appeal of the Solid Ink Technology,
and the fact that the supplies and consumables are much more
environmentally friendly. Based on that after having the first one
repaired for a bad printhead and knowing that we did not have a cost
estimate up front. We could have replaced the printer for less than the
cost of the repair. The next time we purchased the 3-year warranty.
Now if there is a problem Xerox is on the hook, yes the cost was about
half the cost of the printer if memory serves me correctly. However
since we have already had Xerox out to replace a failed board in the
printer, due to inadequately cooling in the building, and knowing that
the repair would have cost more than the warranty. I call it good, we
are about to have it worked on again as there are some minor problems
that I want repaired before the warranty is up.

My Opinion is if you choose to get a Xerox printer by all means PURCHASE
the warranty. If you have problems you will want it.

Do keep in mind that Xerox printers cost an arm and a leg to have
repaired if they break (firsthand experience). Samsung has a cheap and
quiet color laser out there that is practically disposable and puts out
reasonably good prints, with very cheap consumables.

Farm animals, now that's funny. Back in the day of Novell servers
around here we had one named HAL.

However I quite like the idea of my current company, whose Citrix farm
servers are named after farm animals.

Mr. Happy Hacker will defeat this obscurity in about 30 seconds with
nmap, or other port scanning tool of choice.

Apple & Wintel environment

2008-03-28 Thread Cesare' A. Ramos
Hello to all..

Need some thoughts here.

We are speaking with a prospect who will be publishing a magazine. They
will be 80% MAC based due to apps but will have some WINTEL systems due
to accounting and backoffice apps.

Questions:

* Should storage on the network be Apple based or WINTEL based?
Or do we keep the 2 separate?

* Should the 2 environments have their own host servers?

We have performed some reading and research and find that networking and
such will be ok as IP is IP.

What are the groups thoughts? Has anyone come across this?

RE: Employee Terminations

2008-02-27 Thread Cesare' A. Ramos
Our process is pretty much the same as Mark's, with the exception of the
phone. We use a 3Com VoIP system. We forward the extension, just like
e-mail, to someone.

We also perform an exit interview checklist and have them sign off on
that all equipment was turned in and such.

Agreed on the password refresh. This is one of the main reasons that we
cycle passwords every 35 days.

Being a one man IT dept I collect everything. Cell phone/blackberry,
digital camera, keycard for building access, laptop/other eq.

I don't disable AD account, I just reset the password and forward the
mail if necessary. Then at my leisure I close out the account and
archive the mail.

Depending on policies and behaviors in your company it might be a good
time to force a password refresh for everyone.what are the odds that
one of the terminations knows other peoples passwords? Just a thought.

Hi All,

It has been a couple of years since we had a mass termination. We are
looking at letting around 7 people go next week. I am looking at my
check list and wanted to run it by the list - anything I am missing or
shouldn't have on it?

Thanks

Generally management gets the group together in a conference room and
then the rest of the staff go to an impromptu staff meeting.

On our checklist we have:

1. disable user's AD acct

2. reset user's password

3. disable network port.

a. We now have Cisco IP phones that sit in-line between the
computer and the network jack. If I disable the port, they would not be
able to use their phone. What do you do? Log them off their computers
instead?

4. Remove VPN access

5. Transfer phone to Front Desk Recption

6. Shut down email access

We then give them a CD with their personal contacts from outlook, and
personal files out of My Documents.

Thoughts?

Dave

Hi Howard,

That looks like exactly what I want. Now I just have to find a US or
Canadian dealer. :)

RE: Lenovo?

2008-02-21 Thread Cesare' A. Ramos
Ryan,

In regards to your original question on the Lenovo rep, do you mean
reseller or a Lenovo employee?

To thread:

I agree with what someone posted that pcs = problems but I would add a
second part to that equation, users + pcs = problems.

We have all encountered systems, whether they be servers / laptops / pcs
/ peripherals, that were crap to some and others believe they are the
best thing next to whatever turns your noodle.

Our experience from a support perspective, IBM and Lenovo blow Dell out
of the water. But again that is our experience.

My 2 cents. I step off the soap box and allow the next one on.

Storage Management

2007-12-31 Thread Cesare' A. Ramos
Hello all.

Hope all is well.

Looking for thoughts and suggestions on storage management solutions for
environment. We would like a software solution that can monitor a data
sever and maybe scan PCs. Based on defined rules, it will remove data
or report for review.

We have looked at Veritas Storage Exec Small Business Server and it
seems like a great solution but wanted to see 1 or 2 more.

Thanks.

Happy New Year to all..
