Objet : PC that can't Google

One of our VPs brought in his company-supplied home PC (Dell Optiplex
WinXP Pro SP3). Said it was slow and something had changed his home page
and he couldn't change it back. He also said he couldn't access Google.

His home page had been taken over by My Web Search. I checked the Vipre
quarantine and parts of My Web Search had been removed so I could
uninstall it. I ran a Vipre deep scan and installed the latest version
of Malwarebytes and ran its deep scan as well. It detected a number of
registry My Web Search entries.

Everything seemed to be running smoothly and much quicker after the
scanning and deleting. My Web Search was gone but the Google problem
persists. Using either Firefox or IE, you can access any website with
out problem accept Google.com. At the command prompt, you can ping or
tracert any website and it will resolve the name to it's IP address,
accept Google.com. Google.com just times out with the error that the
host name could not be found. I've checked there is no lmhost file. I've
also ran ipconfig

The PC is attached to our work network and through DHCP has picked up
our standard DNS server to use. Everyone else can get to Google.com.

What else could be interfering on just the Google.com name?

Re: [OT] Rugged USB cable?

2011-11-01 Thread Chad Leeper
They do make Usb extenders that use cat 5 to connect the two Usb ends. What
about something like that and then use cat5 designed for outdoor use. That
would also eliminate the Usb length restriction. We use this solution in a
warehouse enviroment with great results.

Conduit or Wiremold is rigid; this has to be flexible, as the
measurement equipment is movable.

I suppose FMC (Greenfield) might work, but it would have to be
rather large diameter to accommodate the USB connectors, which would
in turn make it rather cumbersome to manipulate.

Re: Print screen utility

2011-06-21 Thread Chad Leeper
I like snag-it. Very useful.

Do any of you have a favorite "print screen" utility to allow you to dump
the contents of your screen to the printer? We have an intranet web page
that updates frequently and it doesn't print well in Chrome. I don't know
if it's Chrome or the web page or a combination thereof (I suspect it's
more a combination, as it prints pretty well in IE.)

Anyway, management likes to print screenshots of the website, and I need to
find something to help them. Looking on the Chrome web store I see a couple
different apps and looking on download.com I see a couple apps as well.

Just wondering if you guys have a "favorite" app that you use for this sort
thing. Bonus points if it is a Google Chrome extension/app. :D

Log off first user though or you risk infecting the next account.
If only one account on the machine -- try safe mode admin account or

Can omit MBAM though if desired.

I use "autoruns" from sysinternals -- I LOVE that tool!

run key or runonce under the logon tab in autoruns)

Since Rescue didn't nail it -- found samples can be uploaded here:

We'll be sure to get it in the defs.

All the time. I have downloaded all the groupings that I want and keep
them on a thumbdrive. It is super easy to go to an Internet connected
computer and run it. The installers are quite small, but make it
extremely easy to batch install a number of products sequencialy,
without prompts for anything in between.
For instance, its a great way to patch one-off adobe web-product
updates, java, or silverlight.
The caveat as I understand it, is that what you download will be for a
particular version. So if the product is updated, you will have to
update the installer.
I run a script that does this for me daily for all my wanted ninite

Re: First Steps into the SAN Arena

2010-11-19 Thread Chad Leeper
+1 for Equalogics. They just work and they are constantly adding new
features and tighter integrations with VMware and Hyper V.

If you're looking at the NS line I would definitely talk to Dell about
Equalogics.

Are you planning on utilizing the CIFS or NFS features? If not, look at
the CX4 line as they support iSCSI and Fiber Channel. I agree with
Anders that the Celerra interface is not the most intuitive and is
overly complex. However, I believe they're moving from Navisphere and
Celerra to Unisphere which combines both interfaces into one that can
manage all of the Clariions. There's apparently a lot of integration
with Unisphere and VSphere. Haven't had a chance to play with it yet. I
was in the planning stages of upgrading our CX4-960 to FLARE 30
(required to upgrade to Unisphere) but apparently there's a couple of
critical issues so EMC is recommending we hold off until the hotfixes
are released sometime in December.

That being said, I do like our Celerra. And probably wont get another
one when our current one needs replacing. The celerra is clariion
storage and a file serving box which is unnecessarily complex for our
needs. I'll probably increase the storage for our vsphere cluster and
stand up a windows vm.

So it all depends on your actual needs, i.e. number of vsphere hosts
and nas clients.

Probably more than you asked for but i get the feeling that EMC is
targeting smb's with a product that they don't always have the resources
to manage.

duplicated, and the structure is in a right mess.
Can anyone recommend a (free) solution that will at least identify any dupes,
and allow me to output them to a list, a CSV would be most appropriate.
TIA.

Re: SAN Solution

2010-06-07 Thread Chad Leeper
Just put is a 4 TB Equalogic for ESX enviroment and so far I have been
very happy with it.

Hey guys,

I am looking for a SAN solution for our environment. Currently we are
a software company developing software for O&G industries. We’re
running about 25 VM’s in an ESXi infrastructure at about 100GB each. QA
tends to make and break VM’s on a regular basis. We also want to
consolidate data for backups, VM’s, user data, and Shadowprotect laptop
images. We’re currently looking at the Dell/Equalogic solutions around
3-5TB.

Anyone have any recommendations?

Try installing the Novell client for Vista/Win7 I think it is supported on

I had a server 2000 installation which read files from a Novell server using
the Novell client. Moving to a server 2008, it does not connect. I know this is
an NT admin list, but it is an NT box! Is there a Microsoft client for novell
available for the 2008 server?

RE: Internet Policies

2010-05-04 Thread Chad Leeper

Webmarshal will run on an old PC, Win 2003, Win 2008.  It also ties into ISA if need be.

Interesting. Might actually be something to look into, although I’d prefer an “appliance” so I don’t have to buy a server (we don’t have any Win2K8 servers…only 2003 R2)

Works pretty well and is pretty cheap. You can add antivirus and anit spyware scanning modules as well.

There is also a fairly robust reporting engine for it.

I had it enabled for 60 users and it was running on Windows Xp.  I have since moved it to a Win2003 VM.

submit via email or a link on our KB site. I've noticed a couple like
ManageEngine, Numara Track-IT, and InverseFlow.

Has anyone had experience with these, and would recommend them? Or would
recommend something similar to what we require?

1. Roger, if you use a SAN you will get more out of your virtualization
infrastructure.
Example. In VMware's case you cannot use vmotion if you do not have a SAN.
Also, without a SAN vmware
is unable to load balance your VMs between hosts automatically.
SANs are expensive. There is free software (Open filer) that can be used to
turn any server into a SAN. We have chosen to move to VMware and have
implemented local storage on
a pair HP DL 380s. We will be moving to a SAN year two. It was just too hard
to swing the new hardware and
Vmware and a SAN in the same year.
>

> 2. Do vendors who normally require a dedicated server accept a
> virtualized server as equivalent?

2.Most vendors I have worked with are "onboard" with virtualization. I will
say we have one vendor who does not give its blessing to virtualization
at the moment. We have challenged the vendor to provide reasons why they do
not support virtualization and
a road map as to when their software will support it.
>

> 3. What type of servers (DB, Oracle, F&P, etc.) don't make good
> candidates for virtualization?I would think that SQL/Oracle would

3. SQL 2008 is fully supported in Microsoft's hypervisor. I can tell you that
I am running a couple of SQL 2005
databases on Vmware esx and have had no problems. Building a virtual server
is not that much different than building
a physical one. i.e. SQL likes spindles and ram. As long as the hardware
available to the hypervisor is adequate you should be fine.
Just like a physical server YMMV and you will want to test.
>

> 4. Is clustering still possible with VMs?

4. I think so but, I have not set it up.
>

> 5. What kind of logic determines the best combination of
> host/guests? IOW, is it recommended to put all F&P servers together on
> one host, or should it be a combination of F&P, DB, etc.?

5. The answer to that question will vary. If you put all of your F&P on one
host and that host dies, you lose access to all F&P services.
(If you have a SAN and vmotion the VMs would be directed to another host. If
you have local storage and a product like replicator you could bring
the VMs up on another host that was replicated to, it just would not happen
automagically like with vmotion)
Obviously, you do not want to put all of your DCs on one host. Think load
balancing. If you have a database that has to serve 2000 clients maybe you
put a couple low utilized servers with it.

I have only scratched the surface on what virtualization can do.

General hardware setup recommends for a SQL 2005 database

2008-11-04 Thread Chad Leeper
Z,

1. 30 concurrent users for an accounting/warehousing application.
2. OLTP
3. We will be pulling reports from within the application but, I feel that is
not what you are referring to here.

Thanks for your response

Few questions:

1) 30 Concurrent users correct, or just a max of 30 users.
2) Are the transactions OLAP or OLTP in nature.
3) Will you be doing reporting off this database server (not
recommended)

Here are some things to keep in mind.
1) Split your Disk into LUN's for the database and logs and temp DB (
not partitions but physical LUN's (RAID 1+) for Data, RAID 1+0 for Logs,
RAID 5 for temp)
2) Use multiple controllers, with a high level of cache 512MB or higher
if using local disk to help on transactions.
3) Consider having a temp DB for each physical processor in your system.

Dual and Quad Core Processors with 8-16GB of RAM and Windows 2003/2008
Enterprise along with SQL 2000 Std/Enterprise would be a good starting
point, but you can probably get away with less with your setup with
Win2003 STD and SQL 2005 STD.

Hi all,

I am building a 2005 SQL database server that will be supporting 30
users. The front-end for this database will be on a separate box.
Does anyone have any hardware recommendations. i.e. number drives, ram,
etc?

I prefer HP hardware but, I welcome any input.

Thanks,

General hardware setup recommends for a SQL 2005 database server

2008-11-04 Thread Chad Leeper
Hi all,

I am building a 2005 SQL database server that will be supporting 30 users. The
front-end for this database will be on a separate box.
Does anyone have any hardware recommendations. i.e. number drives, ram, etc?

I prefer HP hardware but, I welcome any input.

Thanks,

/Chad

RE: software to monitor users login and logoff

2008-02-07 Thread Chad Leeper
Check out poweradmin it is free to monitor the event viewer. You can
setup audit and power admin will even email when someone logs in or
out.
We use for monitoring off-hours access via term serv.

Re: What software / system does your HR department use?

2008-01-15 Thread Chad Leeper
We use People-trak. It covers our needs (120 employees) and has a very
small foot print.
