I was an early adopter as well...I think I got my invitation from you as a
matter of fact. (It might've been Bob Free; too many years ago now!)

But my free/normal gmail account says 7301 MB. And yes, I get that ticker...

:-)

I recently noticed that free Gmail accounts are being advertised as
coming with ~2.7G of storage space. My paid-for Google Apps account
has 25.6G. My free Google Apps account has 7.2G, and my free/normal
Gmal account currently has 17.1G.

Now, I know I've seen tickers on the Gmail landing page before that
showed how Google's Gmail storage space was constantly growing... but
was it just for me (as an early adopter), or you too?

RE: Now that Win7 is out , whos running it?

2009-01-12 Thread Christopher J. Bosak
Been running smoothly here. Have it both on a test desktop, and threw it on
my laptop. Both have been running smoothly for now. IE8 is too buggy for me,
installed FireFox. Office 2007 works with no problems. So far, I have not
come across any software that I use normally that does not run in Windows 7.
Much quicker boot time than XP/Vista on the same machine. Getting in the
lower teens for boot time on the desktop, low 20's on the laptop.

So. so far, so good.

We've had builds for about 4 months via TAP. Been running it on my main
machine for several weeks now.

The icon grouping thing takes a while getting used to (some ways it's
faster, but if you had pet ways of using the older-style taskbar, some
things are slower). Explorer doesn't lose folder column preferences anymore
(thank goodness). IE8 has a bunch of bugs (and the IE task bar icon randomly
doesn't display some tabs, which is really annoying). The positioning of the
"show desktop" in the bottom right corner is great (you can drag your mouse
there) unless you have a second monitor that extends your desktop to the
right. Dunno if it's my chipset drivers but I have a heap of problems with
USB power after a random number of sleep/resume cycles.

Cheers

I loaded win7 in a vm the other day (I got my hands on it on Wed), and it
took everything I pretty much *needed*. Quickbooks 9, Office 2007 etc etc.

Sooo yesterday I dropped a new drive in and loaded it directly on my box
(quad 9950, Geforce 9600, 3gb ram, 2x22' dvi screens, asus onboard
audio/nic)

System came right up, Nvidia already has a driver in Windows Update, MSN,
Office, Quicbooks, Rocketdock, City of Heroes all work as expected.

A few apps aren't running right (I am on the 64bit where my vista was 32bit)
- CutePDF, MagicDisc, MountISO (all 'driver' related stuff) doesn't seem to
load correctly.

IMGBurn works, haven't tried Nero 9 yet, but will look at that today.

I don't know about faster/slower/benchmarks, however, I think the added
desktop stuff while may take a little bit to get used to (grouping icons,
disappearing windows when you select stuff in toolbar) seems much more
efficient. The 'changing' desktop is pretty nice too.

The UAC has a gradiant scale. IE8 seems pretty good, the new 'private'
version of the browser looks promising. The 'home' sharing setup with the
keycodes is pretty neat, but I haven't tried it yet.

I would have to say overall, Im pretty impressed with the 'beta' so far.

So for today, I am going to stick with it as my primary computer at the
house and see how stable it remains. Just curious what other people like
about it too.

I do not think it is live quite yet. It looks as though everyone keeps

posted here sometime this afternoon. Whether that be Redmond time or

I need to know if it is 32 or 64 bit and std or enterprise.

Tried connecting with server manager from a vista machine but it can't find

No. I ran BES on a 4 year old PC for a while for 30 users. No problems. I
think it had 512mb and a 30GB drive and maybe 1ghz?

I now have about 100 users on BES in a VM. The VM server has 8 other VMs on
it. I have it configured with 2GB RAM and a 100GB volume.

Just follow their minimum requirements for your application.

It also doesn't protect the cloning of hard drives, which, funnily enough,
happened to one of my clients on Monday.

Security guard saw some disk activity going on, hit the keyboard and voila,
Ghost was in action.CFO's pc, the bugger had installed an extra hdd.

Policies to prevent the unauthorized use of usb ports. There's good
software that will do this, and will apply even on machines (laptops) that
are off the network.

I seem to think InfoPath or Groove or some other MS tool can do this kind of
job - you can select an e-mail and effectively make it "unforwardable", it
was pretty slick.now if I could only remember what product it was.

Subject: Stopping users emailing out internal docs

Hi chaps,

We've had a case this week of a client who found out a user, who is in the
process of being let go, had emailed out to their personal gmail account a
copy of all the internal documents, logos, process diagrams, etc. The user
is now undergoing disciplinary action and facing possible legal action.

However, while it's almost impossible to prevent a user from emailing a
document out if they really want to, companies are obliged to have a policy
in place requiring them not to doing so, and here in the UK that policy has
to be seen to be implemented and enforced if it is to be referred to in any
action.

We've suggested a proper compliance level archival service in order to allow
for emails to be restored even when users delete emails from their machines
(and their recoverable deleted items in this case). Elsewhere we have used
similar services to also report on certain file types, file names and sizes
of files being sent, and use them to bounce emails under certain conditions.
Bouncing certain emails, while a very limited short-stick, does allow for
the policy to be seen to be in place if people are as silly as to send out
documents with certain names etc (like Accounts2008.xls etc).

What do other companies do to help either prevent people sending docs out,
or to cover themselves legally should they have to take action against a
user for doing so, or to highlight when a user is doing so?

Happy Friday ladies & gents...

Ok, on a 32-bit system, you generally cannot get a full 4gb of RAM
available, at least without PAE, however I just threw 4gb of RAM into one of
our older Xeon servers, a Supermicro Superserver 6012L-6, running 2000
Server standard, SP4, and the system properties dialog shows all 4gb. WTF?

Anyone ever seen this before?

I have 7 users in a remote site connecting to a ts server. Every 10-20 mins
or so while having the rdp session minimized the session will 'pop' up and
they have to minimize it again. I cant reproduce it on the lan or from my
office computers, I can sit on the ts all day, its only happening on these
handful of xp pro stations at this location.

I initially was thinking maybe its because of the bandwidth (they have dsl
there) and its losing connectivity and that disconnect is showing up, but
that doesn't seem to be it. If I remote onto their machines, run the ts
connection and minimize it, while sitting there it will 'pop up' to the
front again, as if I hit alt-tab.

Anyone seen this? I haven't, and I cant reproduce it.

kidding, sort-of...)

We recommend that you maintain a range of 3,500 to 5,000 items in a folder
depending on the capacity of the Exchange Server environment. Additionally,
you can create more top-level folders or create sub-folders underneath the
Inbox and Sent Items folders. When you do this, the costs that are
associated with index creation will be greatly reduced if the number of
items in any one folder does not exceed 5,000.

It should broadcast a MAC address when it's broadcasting that the network
exists. NetStumbler should pick that up just fine as long as your card is
compatible with the program. Or, if you're running Vista, there's a program
called VistaStumbler that will do the same thing.

Hello all,

I am reviewing logs from our Cisco Wireless network configuration and
believe their may be a computer in our environment that is broadcasting as
an ad-hoc network and interfering with a few of my access points. Are any of
you aware of any tools I can use from my computer to possibly detect which
computers in my environment could be acting as the ad-hoc network. I would
prefer not to touch every laptop and wireless enabled PC if I don't have to!

Thanks,

We're trying to build a new Windows Server 2K3, and since our server has no
floppy drive, we're using a USB floppy and while the BIOS recognizes the
drive, Windoes Server can't find the file it's looking for. We have also
used a USB thumb wheel which we formated to look like a Floppy Drive, and
same result. Unfortunately, Windows Server 2K3 will only look for the Hard
drive drivers on a "floppy" disk. We have a HP Proliant ML110 and were
trying to set up a raid. Any ideas on how to get around the floppy issue?

RE: OT: iphone update - how long does it take?

2008-09-18 Thread Christopher J. Bosak
Did I say I was anti-apple? No. Was I bowing to the Micro$oft gods? No. I'm
a Linux man myself. I was just stating, that in my opinion WM 6.1 was easier
to configure then the iPhone.

Sorry if my opinion offended you.

Perhaps.

My main problem is that generally this list is quite open about alternative
technologies to solving a particular problem, even though it's officially an
nt system administrators list. Many of us here are working with varied and
mixed environments, some by choice and some by fiat or inheritence.

I have trouble when that same open attitude can't be extended to Apple.
Does Apple have control issues? Sure, but then so does Microsoft. So does
IBM, HP, Dell, any vendor wants to exercise as much control over their
product as possible. Apple just happens to be a bit more successful in
exercising that control to fulfill their vision. If you happen to disagree
with that vision, that's fine, too, but my feeling is that this list
generally doesn't discount any company regardless of their vision if they're
capable of providing the right tool for a given application. I try and use
the best tool for the job. To wit, I bought a Macbook Pro as my last
notebook, because I wanted to play some games on it, and I wanted to do some
video editing work with video's we've collected of our daughter since she
was born. I spec'ed out similar systems from HP, Dell, and Apple
(obviously). All were about comparable in price for what I wanted to do,
but the Apple won because it had great easy to use video editing software
and, I could run Windows in Bootcamp. I run Bootcamp 75% of the time, and a
lot of the time I'm on the OS X side, I'm running my Bootcamp partition
through Fusion.

Sheesh, cut the hyperbole. Perhaps there's a good application where the
iPhone fits and another model cellphone wouldn't.

My iPhone just works, too. I don't make a big deal about it until someone
has to needlessly comment that it's a toy or it doesn't work. Is it
perfect, of course not, but I'd venture to say that there is no perfect
device, just a best fit. For many people that will be an iPhone. Some
people will want it to be a best fit, and fewer still will recognize that it
can't be a best fit for their needs. I'm really glad you have a phone that
perfectly fits your usage needs. Is there any reason to condescend to

After suffering through almost two years of constantly reseting my

Morning, all.

My Google-fu yielded no results to this one. Does anyone know how to
actually disable forwarding of COM ports in Server 2008 TS connections? I'm
using remote app that requires talking to a device on a serial connection
that is connected to the server. When at the server, it connects fine, but
when connecting from another computer with remoteapp, it says it cannot find
the device. I've tried setting the RDP file to not connect the com ports,
but it still seems to anyway. Any ideas on this would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

GMail that's been out for I believe at least 4 years is still "beta." No,
it is not really beta by my definition, but either Google has forgotten to
update the graphic, or more likely they never plan to come out of beta. And
it still lacks quite a bit of functionality compare to many mature mail apps
(not, however, to belittle the good features that they have that others
lack). Same goes for many other offerings: It seems like they roll out a
promising app, but it remains as such with only minor incremental updates.

But with the browser's missing functionality will probably be plugged up by
3rd party just like FF has...

We have a fiber connection which averages between 15-20 MB/s down and 10-15
MB/s up, it's not that unusual to download a 40 Meg file from Dell in 2
seconds or less. I'm running Vista with dual processors and 4 Gig of RAM. I
see no discernable difference between the 3 browsers.

You must have an amazing connection then. Mine is fairly fast but FF3
is noticeably faster than IE for me and Chrome seems faster than FF on
most sites.

Chrome is having some problems properly rendering a few things, but
that's to be expected I guess from Beta browsers.

When you are talking about browser speed, do all of you really see
dramatic differences between these different browsers? I don't see any
difference at all between FF, Chrome and IE. They are all 3 pretty much
instantaneous when browsing for me. There is no one that is slower, or
faster, than the others.

I doubt it's a software problem. I've never had any edition of Windows

care about such a change.

If it fully boots part of the time I would hazard a guess that the PSU

isn't beefy enough for a quad-core CPU.

Since it boots part of the with the quad-core CPU motherboard

compatibility shouldn't be an issue, but you may want to look into BIOS

updates.

isn't beefy enough for a quad-core CPU.

Since it boots part of the with the quad-core CPU motherboard
compatibility shouldn't be an issue, but you may want to look into BIOS
updates.

I doubt it's a software problem. I've never had any edition of Windows
care about such a change.

If it fully boots part of the time I would hazard a guess that the PSU
isn't beefy enough for a quad-core CPU.

Sorta OT: CPU Swap

2008-09-03 Thread Christopher J. Bosak
Okay. Google fu doesn't work well after 1900 hrs for me, so I'm posting this
to all of you.

I have a buddy of mine who, in his lack of wisdom, took out his dual core
Intel, and put in a quad core Intel. And tossed out the old CPU. After this
genius move, his computer boots about 1/5th of the time, and when he does
get into Windows Vista, Digital Cable device registration app crashes, along
with some other applications (I'm not there, and he can't remember.)

Is there a workaround to get this fixed, or is he stuck reinstalling
Windows?

OS: Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit

His 64-bit copy on the same machine, on other hard drive, doesn't boot at
all.

I really like the interface, though. Very clean, minimal. Its fast, too.
Not as fast as FF3, but fast.

Rumor is that they will be adding Google ads to it sometime in the future --
ads you cannot block.

Installed and use it for a while or so yesterday before uninstalling.

Some nagging issues so far. It picks and chooses which bookmarks to import
(doesn't import everything - not sure why). It has a 70MB footprint
(what??). An uninstall doesn't really uninstall - it still leaves files,
particularly the new GoogleUpdate.exe that runs continuously. It's based on
Safari! It doesn't work well with a sliding Windows taskbar. And, hot off
the presses, you can cause it to crash (which doesn't make it very secure):

Hope everyone had a nice weekend.

I am looking for some advice from the list regarding posts on a wiki.
Apparently someone is not very happy with me (not sure why, don't even know
who) and has engaged in some character-assassination of me on a public wiki.
I don't really want to post the link here publicly, as I don't want to
improve the Google PageRank or anything like that, but I can send the link
privately. Safe to say the stuff posted is pretty hurtful to me, and my
fiance who is also mentioned. I can take it, but I would really like the
content about her removed.

What I am wondering is if I should just ignore this (hard to, but I can
try), or if there is anything I can do. Attempts I have made to remove the
content have been marked as "vandalism" and the pages have been restored.
Anyone have advice?

Thanks...

Hi folks,

I know this is not an unusual request, but just thought I might get some
updated opinions from people. I'm thinking of re-evaluating our allegiance
to Trend Micro for desktop antivirus. Not that they've done anything wrong,
just think it's time to take a look around and see if newer or better things
are out there.

My top three requirements would be:

1) Excellent threat detection record and frequent updates to threat
definitions.

2) Good admin interface with easy and reliable remote installs.

3) Good deep scanning ability of clients with a real-time scan that
doesn't hog resources.

I've heard good things about Kaspersky. Anyone have thoughts about going in
that direction?

And yes, Stu, I know you will recommend Vipre. . Just looking for some
unbiased user opinions.

Feel free to email me off-list if more comfortable.

Thanks,

Evan

Quick question to you vmware workstation guys. We have decided to use
workstation for a few of our engineering "power users". We've always used the
machine asset number in the naming convention to maintain uniqueness. If we do
that with the VMs (ie - 12345vm1) then the number will be wrong when the vm is
transported into then next host. On my setup I use the OS description (ie -
S2K3x32Stnd_VM1), but these aren't joined to the domain either. What do you
guys do?

FYI iPhone update 2.0.2 is now available. Seems to have improved bars

of 3G signal noticably for me - normally I'm lucky to get 1 bar in my

condo development, and now im at 3. Supposedly they claim it improves

hopping between Edge and 3G but that never seemed to be a problem for

me, YMMV.

A common mistake. If they are within 21 feet of you, it will be a tie
between their knife and your Glock. In case of a tie, you lose. Not a good
result. And that is if you are ready for an attack. In most cases, your are
the ambushee, and do not know you that you are a victim until they are bad
breath distance from you.

Hey all,

Taking a little informal poll about compensation for after hours / weekend
works. This is mostly geared at consultants, so if you're an onsite IT guy,
please indicate.

If you work after-hours on-call, or are expected to carry the beeper, how
are you compensated?

1. None, just man up and be an IT cowboy and glad you have a job.
2. Flat fee for being on-call.
3. Overtime or time-and-a-half bonus for hours actually worked.
4. Straight hourly at my normal rate
5. Flex time - no extra compentation, but I come in late the next day / take
a day off later in the week.

Thanks all. Yes, I'm on the beeper this weekend (OK, there's no actual
beeper) so it's on my mind. :)

I have to disagree. The price of free is not worth the suckfest that
you operate under the false-sense of security with.

I've repaired enough compromised systems to validate the "free" price
tag of anything. NOD32 and Spybot Search and Destroy (with TeaTimer
running) FTW.

If you are only going to run free stuff, dont use IE. Use Firefox
with AdblockPlus and NoScript addons installed.
