Re: Server login reporting

2012-12-05 Thread Gavin Wilby
I struggling with this really.

I still dont get how this can be parsed to a emailed report of what I want.

I dont need to know successful null sessions for example.

I just need to know when any user tries to log into the DC, and then tell
mw what account and where from.

Gavin.

OK,

I understand what your all saying but the server in question shows
100's if not 1000's of logon events.

How to I ascertain which ones are true user logons to the servers console?

Multi Account Outlook sent items

2012-10-23 Thread Gavin Wilby
Hi,

II have an odd issue that I cant seem to get to the bottom of.

I have an Exchange 2010 SP2 server, that handles email for two external domains.

Every user has a mailbox on the net work that reflects the "main" domain.

There are also other mailboxes on the second domain that certain users
have full access to, and they send emails as the user of that mailbox.

What should happene is that when they send as themselves, that sent
items go to the sent items of their email account (which it does), if
they send asa the other account, it should save the sent mail to the
sent items of the second account, it doesnt, it saves it in the sent
of the main one.

Can someone tell me how to make this work as described, iv only seen
this on a 2010 setup.

I have created the Full Access permisions through both the EMC and
also through PowerShell using the follwing command:

Add-MailboxPermission alias -User "the user" -AccessRights FullAccess
-AutoMapping:$false, to prevent it advertising the mailbox.

Proxy server and ISA

2012-03-12 Thread Gavin Wilby
Hi,

I have implemented an install of GFI Web Monitor on a server that runs ISA2004.

Due to the fact that the ISA has to be set to require auth, for the
users to get logged, I need to set IE for all users to Bypass Proxy
Connections for Loacl Addresses under the Connections for the LAN.

I can see how to policy this out and I cant find the right key to fix
the registry.

Help please?

Re: Get external IP from command line

2011-06-24 Thread Gavin Wilby
Stolen from another website, but this seems to work OK:

Create a file named ip.vbs and copy the following into it:

Option Explicit
Dim http : Set http = CreateObject( "MSXML2.ServerXmlHttp" )
http.Open "GET", "http://whatismyip.org";, False
http.Send
Wscript.Echo http.responseText 'or do whatever you want with it
Set http = Nothing

Execute using

C:\>cscript ip.vbs

Another BGINFO question

2011-06-24 Thread Gavin Wilby
This should be an easy one to someone that knows, how can I insert the AD
computer description into a servers BGINFO screen?

I have to remote into a lot of servers on some sites and it would be useful
to have the description available on the screen as a lot of them dont have
clear computer hostnames.

Re: BGINFO

2010-12-27 Thread Gavin Wilby
I have a pretty good config file now, its looks OK on users desktops,
(actually makes it a bit more professional), and has all the pertinant
information that we need.

Things like current logged on user, hostname, diskspace, IP address etc.

Works for us.

Its called on a logon script, and a reg entry that I put in so the users
dont get the EULA to agree to.

Exchange deleted items clear down

2010-12-24 Thread Gavin Wilby
On Exchange 2003 is was dead easy to do a policy that would delete items
from users folders (specifically out of the deleted items folder) after a
certain amount of time.

I have a client with very messy users and he wants any email older than 60
days in the Deleted Items to be removed for all users on a 2007 Exchange
server - whats the best way to achive this?

Any pointers would be very helpful.

Hi,

I really love this little app, and have started to deploy it to desktops -
it makes life a whole lot easier.

One question, on first run (like all sysinternal apps) it requires for the
end user to accept the license conditions. Bearing in mind I Do accept them,
what gets modified to tell the program you have done so, id like it to be
silent for the end users if at all poosible.

Finding duplicate files

2010-11-04 Thread Gavin Wilby
Good morning all,

Its been a while since I have had to visit this group, so I apologies in
advance for unlurking and coming straight in with a question.

I have a 2003 standard file server, and its used in the main for storing
photos that the owner takes.

These are a mix of CR2, JPG, TIFF and PSD files, depending on the post
process (if any).

However, its apparent that over the years that files and folders have been
duplicated, and the structure is in a right mess.

Can anyone recommend a (free) solution that will at least identify any
dupes, and allow me to output them to a list, a CSV would be most
appropriate.

TIA.

Foundation Server

2010-07-13 Thread Gavin Wilby
Been looking at this as a way to have a low cost server for things like a
BES or a Mail Archiver.

I understand that it will only accept up to 15 users, but one assumes thats
15 concurrent connections to it, so if I have an enviroment of 30 users, but
only 10 of them have Blackberries it would work OK??

Same for a Mail Archiver, as long as no more than 15 users hit it at once it
would work??

Re: Server Disk Imaging

2010-07-12 Thread Gavin Wilby
Yup - I have restored from all sorts, the most amazing was a DL380G6 to a
Dell Optiplex, this was a SBS2008 system, that came up almost completely
cleanly, I think all that happened was a PCI network card wasn't recognised,
this would have been easily sorted with the driver available at restore
time, but its wasn't really a show stopper.

Ill admit though, in that instance it was just a "lets see if you can" test.

Gavin.

Re: Server Disk Imaging

2010-07-12 Thread Gavin Wilby
For what its worth, Acronis is worth every penny of what it costs.

That 1000 bucks, when you actually really need it, say for a complelty
popped server, is nothing…

You might guess I am a fan, but to be honest, I wouldnt even consider
another image based backup product over Acronis now we have used it on a few
sites.

Its not just the DR to consider, as its so quick to image and bare metal
restore a server, for testing purposes etc its excellent. Why do an install
on a live server when you can simply do it on a copy?

Noone else uses the proxy outside of the office, as he is the only one with

Hi Paul,

At the moment its one user yes, the problem occurs when he leaves the
Company LAN, so he then looses his Internet regardless of the network he
uses.

Internet Proxy - Group Policy Question

2010-07-12 Thread Gavin Wilby
Good Afternoon all,

I have a quick question regarding Internet Proxys.

I have a site that has a GPO that forces all users to to run through the
Message Labs proxy server. The policy forces it so it cannot be turned off,
and there are one or two exceptions in that policy.

Now this is all well and good right up until the point that one of the users
(a director) takes his laptop out of the building, and then disappears
abroad with it without telling us. The internet then stops working for him,
as Im guessing that its trying to use a proxy server that it can neither
find, nor authenticate to. Due to the policy being forced he, as an end user
cant turn it off, and we have resorted to manually changing the registry to
get it working again.

The GPO mentioned above is of course a USER based policy, so I cant omit his
laptop from it, and although I could omit HIM from it, I dont really want
to, as it means he has free rein on every PC he logs into.

No doubt Im missing something blindingly obvious here, but whats going to be
the best solution?

Printer managment

2010-04-21 Thread Gavin Wilby
Hi All,

I have taken over yet another site of around 50 users, all on XP
workstations. They have a 2003 server that acts as a DC, and file and print
server.

They have around 20 odd network printers scattered over 4 floors, that have
all sorts of names and network addresses.

I want to rename them logically and give them all static addresses in order
of their name, so Laser 1 would be 192.168.100.201 for example.

Normally we would just rename the printer, change the IP address of it and
then manually remove the old queue from the relavant PC's and reattch the
new queue by connecting to \\server\laser1 .

I feel there must be a better and less disruptive way of doing this,... what
do you guys do when managing large organisations?

Re: Outlook 2003 Macro

2010-04-16 Thread Gavin Wilby
:)

Funny how I post and then Google comes good

I can use this to make the email generation work:

*Sub NewMail()
Dim objOLApp As Outlook.Application
Dim NewMail As Outlook.MailItem
Set objOLApp = New Outlook.Application
Set NewMail = objOLApp.CreateItem(olMailItem)
NewMail.SentOnBehalfOfName = **j...@domain.com*
*NewMail.Display
End Sub*

**
So all I need now is the ability to attach a sig to the bottom of it!

Anyone?

Outlook 2003 Macro

2010-04-16 Thread Gavin Wilby
Hi all,

I hope someone can assist me here, as its kinda outside of my skill set.

I have a user that has a single exchange server, but 2 domains coming into
it.

He runs Outlook 2003, the Exchange server is 2003 standard.

He needs to be able to send an email as a user on the other email domain,
but he doesnt want to have to actually remember to always hit the send filed
of the email and add the user manually.

To compound matters he has to have a different Outlook Signature, when
sending as this user.

What I need I think is a macro, that I can assign a button to, that will
basically.

   - Create a new email
   - Fill the From field as the user that has the alternate email address.
   - Automatically pick a sig, and apply it correctly to the new email.

All he then has to do is write the email and hit send.

Can anyone help me with this please?

RMDIR and Wildcards

2010-01-14 Thread Gavin Wilby
Hi,

For one reason or another I have a need to automatically remove certain
directories (full or otherwise) from a few windows server systems.

As *rmdir \directory* /S *doesnt appear to work, is there any other
way that this can be batched and scheduled?

The directories are all called randomnumber.tmp and so I want to wildcard
the rmdir. Yes, these are directories NOT tmp files.

Thanks Michael,

That was my concern, Ill have to do a test this weekend to be sure, but I
guess Ill follow your advice with the dual import.

The reason for this is that all old email is going to a mail archiver, but
obviously I dont wish it to effect the contacts.

New partition

2009-10-17 Thread Gavin Wilby
Hi,

I just want to run this past you guys to make sure that what i want to do
today is clear in my head and I havent forgotton anyhting.

I have a SBS2003 server that has a hardwared mirrored drive on it.

The drive is split into a 20GB partition (c:) for the system to live on and
a 50GB partition (e:) for data, and Exchange databases to live on.

Im introducing two new disks as a 72GB mirror to the server. This is to be
the new data store. so what i propose is.

   - Unmount the Exchange stores.
   - Stop any services that are using any files on the e: drive.
   - Make a note of any shares and permissions.
   - Copy all the data from the old e: drive to the new drive (lets just say
   its called z:)
   - When thats done and verified, change the drive letters around so the
old e: becomes x:, and the old z: becomes the new e:
   - Remount the exchange stores.
   - replace and shares and permissions.
   - Once all checked wipe the x: drive and then extend the c: drive into
   the new space.

I have two known good backups of the server, but can anyone see any issues
with this process?

There seems to be a ton out there but has anyone got any recommends for a
commercial environment? Id quite like it to work inline (ala Word) so it
underlines as you type out forms or what not - if it can use the Word

To make a little clearer, I want to be able to use this:

*[ps] new-variable servername -value*

But then to be prompted to enter the hostname, so I can then drop the
"servername" into the previous script.

Paging the Powershell gurus

2009-08-14 Thread Gavin Wilby
Hi,

I use a anti-spam system that's on a remote server, and so I like to lock
down my Receive Connectors/ SMTP servers to only accept email from certain
IP addresses.

I have the following script that kinda does it for me:

*[PS] C:\Windows\System32>Set-ReceiveConnector "Windows SBS Internet Receive
%SERVERNAME%" -RemoteIPRanges (Get-Content
c:\users\sys_adm\desktop\%youriplist%.txt)*
its a little bit of a pain though, as I have to have the IP list in a text
file somewhere and then modify the script to use it. and also the receive
connector name is never the same so i have to change that in the script.

Id LIKE to have it so it asks for certain variables before it starts, so it
picks up the right hostname for instance, a little like a set /p does.

Can this be done?

Auditing Exchange Public Folders

2009-08-05 Thread Gavin Wilby
Hello,

My GoogleFoo is failing me here.

I have an Exchange 2003 Standard setup with a few public folders in
it, one being a contacts folder with approx 5000 contacts in it.

I have been informed that a few contacts have disappeared, but of
course noone has deleted them, so the server must have done it!

Is there a way to audit the contacts folder for entry deletion easily,
so if it happens again I can at least show the boss that n user
deleted x entry?

Gavin.

Does anyone here have any decent stress test tools?

When we get a new server we like to soak test it on the bench for a
couple of days, but what Id like to do is run some tests on it that
stress the CPU, Memory, HDD's etc...

Does anyone do this, and if so what do you use?

Iv looked at UBCD, but it has too many things on it really, Id like
something I can boot the server with and it just gets on with it, it
would be handy if it runs inside Windows as well as being a boot disk.

Hey list,

To the best of my knowledge, there is no way to create a GPO for a
particular user account.  You can, of course, create a GPO linked to
the OU containing that user account, and then set "permissions" on the
GPO such that only that user has the "Apply Group Policy" permission
for that GPO.  But ultimately, it's still a GPO associated with an OU.

We have occasional "one-off" GPOs.  They get applied to a single
role account used for automation that needs a logoff script custom to
the application.  (We could detect the user name in a more global
logoff script, I suppose, but that's even less elegant.)

I was thinking an individual user GPO would be a convenient feature
to have.  It would be somewhat analogous to the "machine local GPO"
that currently exists for computers.  You can edit that GPO by logging
into the computer and running GPEDIT.MSC.  It applies to the local
machine only.  It would be nice if user accounts had something like
like that.  Maybe a "User GPO" button on the "Account" tab or
whatever.

If someone knows of a better way with existing tools, please feel
free to hit me with a cluebat.

Anyone know how one would submit this as a suggestion to Microsoft?
Last I went looking, msw...@microsoft.com had been shut down.  There
was a sort-of replacement at <http://connect.microsoft.com>,
but it
was aimed at focus groups and beta tests, and didn't have a mechanism
to provide feedback for stuff Microsoft hadn't thought of yet.  (How
typical.)

I know that has to be added to a recipiant policy to work, but is it easy to

Paging the scripting Guru's - mass shortcut properties rename???

2009-07-31 Thread Gavin Wilby
Hi,

I'm on a site that uses a Document Management system that was recently (not
by me) moved to a different server. There are thousands of files that live
in a repository:

\\server01\documents\clients\ *

Unfortunately, what we have now found is that the users use shortcuts inside
this structure to point to other parts of the repository, these obviously
reference the old server, that no longer exists.

I thought of removing the DNS name of the old server and using a cname to
redirect it, but that's a bit of a cludge IMO.

Can I go to the root of the store, and get a script to look at all the
shortcuts and change the path from say:

\\server01\documents\clients\document.docto
\\server02\documents\clients\document.doc

This needs to be done with no danger to the containers or the folders
within...

Any ideas?

Really odd XP keyboard

2009-07-30 Thread Gavin Wilby
Hi,

I have a remote user that cannot login to her machine after locking it at
lunch time. The really odd thing is the way the keyboard behaves.

A backspace creates a square box. A H does a backspace and hitting the X
does like a pageup in doskey.

Ever seen anything like this?

No. Thats exactly how it does it.

Its absolutly sickening to behold.

Unfortunatly the MS sharepoint creator makes the same messy code.

Ill be honest, most of our guys will be staying with XP. It works, we
know it works, its supported and the end user knows how to use it.

W7 will go to standalone laptops in the main, and Vista was a mistake
for everyone concerned,.. Windows ME anyone?

Blackberry HTML email

2009-07-25 Thread Gavin Wilby

Good Morning all,

Does anyone here have a Blackberry and have it set up to receive HTML
email? If so, I need a small favour.

Our company stationary is a framed HTML email, but it breaks when
received by a Blackberry. Its hard to decsribe if you cannot see it,
but basically, it will show the left hand frame, with the logo and
contact details in it, but it then only occasionally allows you to
scroll down to the body of the email.

If I could send it to someone to look at and tell me what part of the
HTML is doing it please?

me if there was any way to recover a domain controller (only one, W2K,
HP Blade I believe) from an unbootable C: drive. There is a system
state backup, is that enough to do a recovery? I personally have never
had to recover from such robust stupidity so I really don’t know but
my initial thought is they’re screwed. If anyone can tell me
differently it would be most appreciated.

Cheers Lee,

I had a support session from a BIG player using it today - what amused
me is that they used the non commercial one - I mentioned it and it was
becuase WebFX was down (apparently). It wasnt Mcafee, but it may have
well as been!

Just tried it on my Macbook to wifes PC, worked great - dead easy for
even the slowest of end users to install.

Hi Chris,

Thanks for the reply, I did ask her to email me the document today, but
she emailed me the attchement instead :) By the time I noticed she had
gone for the day - Ill try that again tomorrow.

Are you suggesting a corrupt email(s).

She reckons that if she prints to one of the local networked Ricohs it
works fine, the problem is only on her local USB printer (which is brand
new).

I have a really odd issue here and hope someone can help me.

I have a remote user using XP pro, on a domain that she attaches to via
a VPN.

She uses a couple of apps via a 2008 Terminal Server one of which being
Outlook that attaches to the Exchange server at the remote end. All of
this works fine so far (bar a couple of the teething issues using remote
apps).

However, although all email looks fine to her on the screen, when she
tries to print *some* of them to her locally attached HP laser printer
(a 3005 I think), it prints out looking like the following:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/gavsta/3743455647/

Now Im guessing the font thats used in the email isnt getting to the
printer correctly, I have tried all sorts of drivers combinations (the
printer is on the 2008 HCL), and the problem remains.

Can anyone assist with this?

Gavin.

Did the test earlier this year. There is a bit of a training session
available to prepare you for the test. I didn't find the help until
after I took the test the first time and missed one too many. Spent
the hour with the training piece and aced the test the second time.
Really not a bad way to qualify for the Action Pack. I went for the
Action Pack because I need to support Vista and wanted to put Vista on
my desk machine and by the time I got the Action Pack, Win 7RC was
out, so I left XP on my desk machine and put W7 on the laptop.

Re: Removing primary AD server or PDC from domain?

2009-07-12 Thread Gavin Wilby
The server that you have left, use that to seize and then use the FMSO
roles that the dead server was providing.

Then manually remove the old DC from AD.

Theres a million sites that tell you how to do this.

FMSO:
http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=seize%20fsmo%20roles&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8

Remove DC:

+1 for Wordpress-formatted blogs. Plenty of free [well supported] themes
and most of them are pretty configurable.

If you have your own domain and download Wordpress, it is very easy to
set up and use. Your ISP will have to supply a backend database as part
of your hosting account. Importantly, backup of your blog content is
well documented. Upgrade of the Wordpress software is also in place and
pretty straightforward.

But I think that partition is stopping the mirror from happening cleanly -
you cant boot off the 2nd disk, but before I remove it, and as I have no

I actually meant:

multi(0)disk(2)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Windows Server 2003 for Small
Business Server" /noexecute=optout /fastdetect

Boot.ini / software RAID, need to fix.

2009-05-28 Thread Gavin Wilby
Hi all,

I have taken over an SBS site and they have (horror) a 2 disk software
mirror. However although the Disk Manager shows the disks mirroring OK, as
here: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3570/3572139495_92aa843fdb_o_d.jpg

The boot ini looks like this:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Windows Server 2003 for Small
Business Server" /noexecute=optout /fastdetect
C:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" /cmdcons

I assume that I can simply add this as a line to the ini file?

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Windows Server 2003 for Small
Business Server" /noexecute=optout /fastdetect

Which will aloow me to boot from the second disk if I ever have to?

I also want to remove that small partition at the start of the disk0,
looking at the ini file there should be no reason why I cannot?

Re: OOF

2009-05-22 Thread Gavin Wilby
Hi, yup they are all OL2007 - we get the full internal and external options,
along with the feature set of Exch2007, it simply doesnt work.

I have checked the tracking logs (which are horrible compared to 2003 I
might add), and it appears that the OOF is being generated, but it never
gets there :(.

I have tried smallbizserver.net, but no joy there either.

Re: OOF

2009-05-22 Thread Gavin Wilby
Hi,

The clients are a mix of XP, Vista and W7.

All run Outlook 2007.

External OOF doesnt work in any scenerio.

Gavin.

OOF

2009-05-21 Thread Gavin Wilby
Paging the Exchange 2007 guru's

As we are a small IT shop looking after a bunch of different people we need
to have OOF working externally. We recently swung over to a SBS2008 server,
and since then OOF never get to external recipients.

I have changed the default domain in the Org Configuration, Hub Transport,
to Allow external out-of-office messages only, it was on the bottom option
before that. However, no other options work here anyway?

Am I missing something - or do I have to do this via the command shell?

Id like this to be wide open really, Im not interested in security issues
that this might open up.
