RE: What do you get for Over Time

2001-08-27 Thread Jesse E. Gardner

Hi Matt,

You've gotten some great advice here. Which you choose to give the most
merit is entirely up to you though.

The one that I agree with most is that this situation has to be resolved
between and your boss. That's "You and your Boss" not, you and your boss
and a co-worker. Your financial situation is something that you want to
keep extremely confidential in the workplace.

I've been working hourly (contractor) for the past ten years, and prior to
that 15 years salaried at AT&T Bell Labs. And not all of your co-workers
with the same or similar title don't always meet your salary. Stay away
from that can of worms. LOL

Subject:What do you get for Over Time

I was wondering if anyone has any policies set up for Over Time.

The reason I ask is one of the other network guys and myself have put in
about 40 hours over time this month and we receive nothing for it.

Just wondering what policies are set up at other companies to compensate for
over time.

We consistently work about 8-12 hours over a month and we get no time off or
anything for this.

Management keeps telling us it is just part of our job and we can not get
any comp time even though we are only scheduled for

40 hours a week.

RE: New W2K Server

2001-08-27 Thread Jesse E. Gardner

Congratulations! I just built one for home use. It's a simple setup, I
used 2 hard drives;

* Disk0: 3Gb, strictly system. No data, storage, etc.
* Disk1: 15Gb; I've partitioned this one into three 5Gb drives.  1: Apps, 2:
Data1, 3: Data2

The server is an old Compaq Deskpro 2000. And maybe someone can answer this
question, "How do you access the BIOS on this old box?" I've tried F1 thru
F10, and nothing.

I also get a disk error (1791) that allows me to boot up, but only after
hitting any key. Once I'm logged on everything appears to fine. I'm still
in the process of checking it out though.

If this note has evoked a flashback from anyone, your response would be very
much appreciated.

Normally it is accessed thru F10. On those
models the "Compaq Partition " was that F10 ran to configure the
BIOS. What you will need to do is download the appropriate Setup and
Diagnostics Disks from Compaq and these can then be booted from the diskettes that
are created and will run the Setup program and allow BIOS setup. Running setup
might even get rid of the Error 1791 message.

The DP 2000 had a BIOS that was completely dependant on a system partition
on the first hard drive. Take a look at Compaq's site and see if they have
a utility to re-create that system partition. We warned that any tool they
have is probably going to wipe the rest of your hard drive...

Sorry about the cross posting.

We don't have a lot of specifics on it, but there appears to be a new worm
on the loose. The payload is a typical Melissa-style worm, where its only
action is to send mail to all members of the GAL, with the following
message:
"Hi, how are you ? I am fine here. Please read the page
http://pcControl.tripod.com/ to get some knowledge and prevent somebody hack
you. Forword this mail to help all your friends too."

Its plain text, and carries no executables with it, but I haven't visited

web about it at this point.

Even with headers, I am thinking that they would need someone to verify
them... Or server logs or something. All which can feasibly be forged.

Hi Benjamin,

The phonied up email is worthless as evidence unless the mail headers
can be presented as evidence. The header information would then need to
be confirmed with the ISP logs. Of course, if it goes to jury rather
than judge, she could present a salami with a message on it and claim
you sent it as email.

This is kind of a personal issue, but maybe someone could help me out as
it relates to legalaties for email. My x-wife typed stuff up in word to
look like an email and put threats and various obscenties in it. There
is no header info just says subject,to,from and the offending text it
could simply be typed in word (and was btw!:) ).

Anyhow, I went online to mail.com, yahoo.com, hotmail.com, outlook,
outlook express, and aol.com and printed up an email from each to show
that this isnt what an email looks like. I also printed the header info
from both outlook and outlook express to show server transactions. My
lawyer is bringing in 'an email expert' to certify the email doesnt show
anything. Any ideas.. would be grateful

Although this is pertaining to my personal problem, it may be
interesting to know what the law is viewing as a valid email vs.
fraudlent email. I read up on some cases online but most dealt with
spammers and not holding an email for an assault or contract negotation.

Thx to any who have some ideas!

Hi all

I have a customer with W95/W98/NT4 systems.
We have implemented a DHCP/DNS solution for him, but as all systems already
have old DNS/DHCP entry in the IP properties, those sent from the DHCP
server are overwritten with the local ones.

Is there a tool (maybe remote), with which I can delete the local DNS/DHCP
entries on all the systems?

Thanks in advance for any reply.

Mr. Dionne,

Do you actually believe everything that you've just written?

Especially these sections:

Many times details of the politics behind situations are kept quiet, but
overall I think we are given the straight scoop by government and the media.
It is always good to question what we are told, and our press does that very
well.

I adamantly disagree that we are the bad cop on the beat. Many look upon
the US badly because of our status in the world. We are active and support
American Interests around the world to protect ourselves, as well as foster
world peace and stability. Using the phrase "under the yoke of the US" is
propaganda. We have no national purpose of holding other nations down for
powers sake. There is no yoke of the US.

Sir, with all due respect, you are either sheltered from life itself and
don't get out much. Or you're too young to be involved in a discussion like
this. But you're definitely uninformed if you dismiss all of Mr. Buff's
comments as "X-file-ish."

Mr. Dionne, do you why the US bombed Japan during WWII? Sir, do you know
the real reason we went to the defense of Kuwait?

I am not going to get into a debate with you about these things. A simple
yes or no will suffice with me. As I respectfully do not place much
credence in an Americans' opinion (yours), who appears to be blinded with
'love of his country.'

Kurt,

US foreign policy over time fluctuates due to the differing opinions of the
political party who happens to be in power and to some degree of public
opinion. Your characterization of events in the past are almost
"X-File-ish." Sure US policy has not always been correct, we make mistakes
like every other country. Fighting the Soviet Union we had to sometimes
choose stability over more democratic opposition. Your comments imply some
sort of conspiracy in hiding or coloring historical events like JFK, etc.
Many times details of the politics behind situations are kept quiet, but
overall I think we are given the straight scoop by government and the media.
It is always good to question what we are told, and our press does that very
well.

We support Israel because it is the right thing to do. But, we also support
a Palestinian state. It is up to them to come to terms however. In the
modern world the US has to be engaged in the world or pay the consequences.
This means making decisions on what governments to support, taking or not
taking military action, etc. In general the US government and it's people
(us) support and respect the world's diversity. We may preach, but we do
not conquer.

I know there are points of view at odds with the United States, but we have
to stand up for our interests and principles. The bottom line is we cannot
please everyone, but we have to make the effort to live with everyone in the
world. Being strong and outspoken in the world, is enough of a cause for
other nations and peoples to be resentful of the US. The major cause of
today's events is the clash of Western and Islamic culture. There should be
room enough for all of us. But it is not the United States who is turn this
into an "us against them" argument. In fact the political use of "Jihad"
really does a great disservice to Islam.

What it comes down to is we must fight for freedom, even if it appears we
are the bully of the world. Just imagine the current government of China
were in charge, and see who would complain than.

This, from a Canadian newspaper, is worth sharing.

America: The Good Neighbor.

Widespread but only partial news coverage was given recently to a
remarkable editorial broadcast from Toronto by Gordon Sinclair,
a Canadian television commentator.
What follows is the full text of his trenchant remarks as
printed in the Congressional Record:

"This Canadian thinks it is time to speak up for the Americans as
the most generous and possibly the least appreciated people
on all the earth.
Germany, Japan and, to a lesser extent, Britain and Italy were
lifted out of the debris of war by the Americans who poured in
billions of dollars and forgave other billions in debts.
None of these countries is today paying even the interest
on its remaining debts to the United States.

When France was in danger of collapsing in 1956, it was the
Americans who propped it up, and their reward was to be insulted
and swindled on the streets of Paris. I was there. I saw it.

When earthquakes hit distant cities, it is the United States
that hurries in to help. This spring, 59 American communities
were flattened by tornadoes. Nobody helped.

The Marshall Plan and the Truman Policy pumped billions of dollars
into discouraged countries. Now newspapers in those countries are
writing about the decadent, warmongering Americans.

I'd like to see just one of those countries that is gloating over
the erosion of the United States dollar build its own airplane.
Does any other country in the world have a plane to equal
the Boeing Jumbo Jet, the Lockheed Tri-Star, or the Douglas DC10?
If so, why don't they fly them?
Why do all the International lines except Russia fly American
Planes?

Why does no other land on earth even consider putting a man or
woman on the moon?
You talk about Japanese technocracy, and you get radios.
You talk about German technocracy, and you get automobiles.

You talk about American technocracy, and you find men on the
moon-not once, but several times-and safely home again.
You talk about scandals, and the Americans put theirs right
in the store window for everybody to look at.

Even their draft-dodgers are not pursued and hounded. They are
here on our streets, and most of them, unless they are breaking
Canadian laws, are getting American dollars from ma and pa at home
to spend here.

When the railways of France, Germany and India were breaking down
through age, it was the Americans who rebuilt them.
When the Pennsylvania Railroad and the New York Central went broke,
nobody loaned them an old caboose.
Both are still broke.

I can name you 5000 times when the Americans raced to the help of
other people in trouble. Can you name me even one time when
someone else raced to the Americans in trouble?
I don't think there was outside help even during the San Francisco
earthquake.

Our neighbors have faced it alone, and I'm one Canadian who is
damned tired of hearing them get kicked around.
They will come out of this thing with their flag high.
And when they do, they are entitled to thumb their nose at
the lands that are gloating over their present troubles. I hope
Canada is not one of those."

Stand proud, America!

Mike Givens; Cheesy

As I tried to explain below, I was experiencing difficulties with my ISP

anything but email.  I guess I was
just frustrated with my network at the time, and feeling helpless because I
cannot get to the NY area at this time (I lost a son-in-law in yesterday's

Uso,

I know this problem, You can try 2 things (2. second will work :-))

First: go to the server, restart the server service (it will stop other
services, but You can restart them later)
If this will not solve the problem, only the restart will help You

We have this problem sometime, there is no valid solution for this (sp or
patch). We find this mainly on file and print servers if the print queue
number more than 100..., the connected user number higher then 500...

Hi all,

I just joined the list.
I have a problem regarding NT 4.0
My environment is 10/100 Switched network on CISCO switches.
For some reason I keep loosing network connectivity to servers.
A PING works fine but not a NET VIEW (System error 53 has occurred. The
network path was not found.)
If you try to use any remote tools like Eventviewer etc. it gives you RPC
Server unavailable.
This keeps coming and going on all servers, and I can't pin point what might
be causing it.
We have VLANs configured but it doesn't seem to be related to it. The
symptomps are the same and don't depend on which VLAN you are on.
The Event logs don't show any errors.
Using Host or LMHost files didn't help either.

Any ideas?

regards

Uso

You know,
I violated a cardinal rule of mine - don't post something if you can't back it
up.  I did have a reference and now can't find it.  I did find a
similar exploit in the Yahoo messenger.  I'm still pretty confident I did
read about either a real attack via the icon, or at least a proof of concept,
and I will keep looking for it.  Anyway, the below is an exploit against
an IM, so it shows it is vulnerable.

From http://www.ca.com/virusinfo/encyclopedia/

Yahoo Pager/Messanger Buffer Overflow
There is a buffer
overflow problem with Yahoo Messenger that leaves the user vulnerable to remote
attack. The problem arises due to a lack of appropriate bounds checking on the
length of a URL that is received from another user inside a message.
Unfortunately, due to this oversight, it is possible for unprivileged and
possibly hostile remote users to execute arbitrary commands by overwriting the
EIP (return address) and filling the URL with malevolent code. The hostile code
could then be actioned when the unsuspecting target host clicks on the URL.

Two
things come to immediate mind:

1) Many
IM clients allow for file transfer.  Depending on your overall security
policy this in itself can be an issue.  Even if you allow people to
transfer files, the IM client then becomes a point of security control.
For example, with AIM, it is supposed to ask the user if it is ok if their chat
partner sends them a file.  How long do you think it will be before
hackers manage to bypass that "confirmation"?  Further, then they
bad-guys could then just send a backdoor program to the hard disk.  Or
just pick up sensitive data from the computer.

2) There
has already been at least one IM based virus - done by embedding malicious code
in an icon smiley face.  This becomes another area where the anti-virus
vendors have to keep up.

I'm sure
there are other reasons as well, those are just the 2 that come to my mind
before finishing my first cup of coffee.

To Jesse
Gardner,

If you are
concerned only with your Outlook 2000 settings and you are not using Outlook
express try the following. Copy (just to make sure don't move just copy) your
.pst file to one folder you choose (it can be any folder for example
MailShared). Then under your old and new IDs simply start Outlook go to
File-Open-Personal Folders File and open it in both IDs in that case you can
override the problems of using two different profile by setting up the profile
independent system of mail and contacts storage it worked fine with me. I know
that there is something similar with the Outlook express where you directly
tell which folders are used for email but never looked. The best option for you
would be using IMAP for your mail. You will like it. Ask your email provider.

Hi Chris,

I appreciate the help, but for some reason the profiles setup everything
but the Outlook access.  When
Outlook is activated, a new version is initiated.  I’ve pointed to the .pst file, that doesn’t work either.  Unlike 95 or 98, you can’t configure

And trying to find something to point to for O2K, is like pulling teeth

Copying
Profile does nothing for local settings - which includes email etc.
(Outlook/Express): Go into regedit; locate your profiles SID as a subkey of
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList.
Copy the GUID in the Guid string value into a new String Value called, say,
OldGuid. Identify the GUID of the profile you had and want to continue using
-  you can use the SID to GUID map in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileGuid.
Replace the string Value of the GUID with the guid containing your old profile
in your new profile. Then logoff and logon. This will 'redirect' your new
profile (in its entirety) to your old profile.

Server = 2K Adv Srvr

Laptop:

I have been using an ID
(admin level [local]) for years (profile is just how I want it).  Created a network at home.  Can see the network, but when I create
a network ID I lose my desktop (profile) settings.  I especially don’t want to re-configure Outlook 2K for this
profile.  My already existing mail
is not accessible.  It’s a pain
rebooting to access my current email setup.  Question, do I copy the profile to gain old settings
(desktop) on network ID?  If so, is
that done using the copy to feature
in the profile section?  Can I add
this local account (ID) to the server (AD)?

I am doing something wrong
and I can’t put my finger on it.  I
just know it…

Server:

See above…  (got carried away)

Note: For those of you that
have never used W2K Advanced Server, try it.  You’ll love it!!

As always, any assistance
will be greatly appreciated.  So,
thanks in advance.
