RE: Ghost 2002 Suggestions
Ghost should be able to do all this if you use sysprep as well. You may need separate images for the different manufacturers depending on the hardware. Technet and the reskit has loads of info on sysprep. -Original Message- From: Roger Ali [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Thursday, 27 September 2001 16:01 To: NT System Admin Issues Subject: Ghost 2002 Suggestions Hey all, My supervisors would like us to push Windows 2000 Images to Dells, Compaqs, and HPs down to our users' desktops. The problem is we're not AD so I can't use RIS. We got a suggestion to use Ghost for this purpose. My question is can I make an image on Ghost 2002 of a Dell and push it to a Compaq without getting a BSOD because of the IDE Configurations, can Ghost redetect the devices and then just add it to the registry or something. Also will it prompt me for a name for the machine to have instead of using a duplicate? I just wanted to check if Ghost has this functionality before we invest and waste money. RE: IIS check this out
I agree that if all IIS users switch to Apache we'd be no better off than now. What this report is suggesting is that businesses should spread the risk by considering other web servers. If 80% of the web is run on 1 type of server, no wonder it falls over if you sneeze too hard. What this story does NOT highlight, is the fact that all the most recent worms/viruses etc have been so damaging due to the lack of patching of servers.in some cases patches that have been out for over a year. If MS can get an automated patching system that makes patching easier and safer then the dangers might not be so bad. BTW, there is a follow up story on The Register: http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/55/21869.html -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Tuesday, 25 September 2001 17:42 To: NT System Admin Issues Subject: RE: IIS check this out Wow, that's pretty harsh. However, don't you think if everyone ditched IIS and moved to something else like Apache, then the bad guys would just start targeting Apache. If your goal is to bring sites down, then you get the most bang for you buck by targeting IIS. Along the same lines, most viruses target PCs and not MACs. After the Nimda virus someone on one of the lists I'm on suggested that Nimda was another example of why people should switch to MACs. It would probably then then be double checked to see what the flow of conversation was like. Given the huge number of conversations that they're listening in to, there must be some fantastic algorithms to remove harmless ones. A few months ago here in Europe, someone tried to flood Echelon by sending out an email virus that consisted of 1.5 pages of nothing but suspect phrases and words like "kill the president", hacker, cybercrime etc, etc. It was a pathetic attempt to flood it but would never have worked due to the lack of structure in the document. -Original Message-From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]Sent: Tuesday, 18 September 2001 15:30To: NT System Admin IssuesSubject: RE: Senate votes to permit warrantless Net-wiretaps, Carnivore us e As much as I don't necessarily have a problem with this, the real question will be what happens when someone makes an offhand, attempt-at-humor comment that sets off whatever "filters" they're looking for. RE: The idiocy continues!
I've noticed that in amongst all the criticism of poor security at Boston airport, no-one has suggested paying the people who operate the metal detector screens and x-ray machines a bit more than what they currently get (which is reported as on a par with someone who flips burgers in a diner). With CNN reporting a second debris site about 6 miles from the crash in Pennsylvania that lends support to the phone calls about a bomb, I think that there should be more pressure to implement existing security properly before adding more. All the talk about extra security sounds more like politicians and bureaucrats trying to grab more money for their little empires - helped along, of course, by the security industry. Hopefully, as days go by and things calm down, common sense will prevail. -Original Message- From: Benjamin Scott [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Thursday, 13 September 2001 17:11 To: NT System Admin Issues Subject: RE: The idiocy continues! RE: HP to Acquire Compaq in $25B Deal
LOL, is it pick on happy clowns day today? Funnily enough, I had thought of saying Dell and Sun and not long after in an anaysis of the whole thing, Theregister.co.uk suggested that would be a better 'merger' due to the different strengths and markets each one works in. I am NOT suggesting that is going to happen tho. -Original Message- From: Larry Nail [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Tuesday, 4 September 2001 15:50 To: NT System Admin Issues Subject: Re: HP to Acquire Compaq in $25B Deal There could be some merit to that suggestion, Dell did just drop their support for Linux MAC OS-X is just FreeBSD with a happy clown suit on it - Original Message - From: Phillips, Glen [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: NT System Admin Issues [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, September 04, 2001 6:31 AM Subject: RE: HP to Acquire Compaq in $25B Deal : I guess this means the end of Compaq v HP arguements.wonder what Dell is : making of this. RE: Ghost and 2000
Use sysprep. We use the same image for several different versions of Compaq desktops and another image has worked on laptops from 4 different manufacturers. I want to have 1 image, that will work with different hardware configurations. Does anyone know if this is possible? I know it wasn't with NT, and before I dive in and just try it, I'm wondering if anyone has done or is doing this.
