RE: Ghost 2002 Suggestions

2001-09-27 Thread Phillips, Glen

Ghost should be able to do all this if you use sysprep as well. You may need
separate images for the different manufacturers depending on the hardware.

Technet and the reskit has loads of info on sysprep.

Subject: Ghost 2002 Suggestions

Hey all,
My supervisors would like us to push Windows 2000 Images to Dells,
Compaqs, and HPs down to our users' desktops. The problem is we're not AD
so I can't use RIS. We got a suggestion to use Ghost for this purpose. My
question is can I make an image on Ghost 2002 of a Dell and push it to a
Compaq without getting a BSOD because of the IDE Configurations, can Ghost
redetect the devices and then just add it to the registry or something.
Also will it prompt me for a name for the machine to have instead of using a
duplicate? I just wanted to check if Ghost has this functionality before we
invest and waste money.

Thanks
Roger Ali

Jason,

I'm interested in the compatws security template. We have a very locked

I normally have to go through and make security changes to the file system

more info on this template.

Eric,
You really don't want your users to have 'Power User' privileges. I would
suggest you install the applications and then apply the 'compatws' security
template to the laptops. That allows users to use applications that would
not normally run unless the user was part of the Power User group and
protects your registry and other system files from people who like to
'snoop' around.

Thank You,

I need to give some laptop users in my organization Power User privileges on
their PC's so that they are able to install applications and such. I added
them to the Power User group locally, but as soon as they login to the

have to do on the server to give them this right without giving them full

RE: IIS check this out

2001-09-25 Thread Phillips, Glen

I agree that if all IIS users switch to Apache we'd be no better off than
now. What this report is suggesting is that businesses should spread the
risk by considering other web servers. If 80% of the web is run on 1 type of
server, no wonder it falls over if you sneeze too hard.

What this story does NOT highlight, is the fact that all the most recent
worms/viruses etc have been so damaging due to the lack of patching of
servers.in some cases patches that have been out for over a year. If MS
can get an automated patching system that makes patching easier and safer
then the dangers might not be so bad.

BTW, there is a follow up story on The Register:

Wow, that's pretty harsh. However, don't you think if everyone ditched IIS
and moved to something else like Apache, then the bad guys would just start
targeting Apache. If your goal is to bring sites down, then you get the
most bang for you buck by targeting IIS. Along the same lines, most viruses
target PCs and not MACs. After the Nimda virus someone on one of the lists
I'm on suggested that Nimda was another example of why people should switch
to MACs. Sorry, it will be a cold day in Osama's soon to be new home before

I was going to say that.
There are some MAJOR advantages to being on these lists.
As an example, many of us knew about Nimda hours before anyone else did.
Granted we didn't have technical details or a name, but we knew there
was something bad happening and to start battening down the hatches. You
cant put a price on info like that.
I guarantee you, you sub to these lists, your knowledge will grow

RE: Splash screens and wallpaper

2001-09-18 Thread Phillips, Glen

I agree..except whenone decides to rename their favourite BMP file to
the same name as the wallpaper. We now also have to copy the BMP down in the
login script (see how messy this can become? :-)
We also have different BMPs for desktops and laptops - no company logo on
the laptop - to avoid the risk that someone looking over your shoulder at
the airport etc may realise the potential for sensitive data to be on the
laptop.

I have been asked to do two things.

1.Present a splash screen that everyone will see for 5
or 10 seconds
during the logon or boot.

2.Change everyone's desktop wallpaper to some uniform graphic.

I am looking for suggestions and would appreciate any help. I have
previously created mandatory wallpaper using the registry

Could
anyone over the age of 12 understand what kids are talking about?
:-)

Serioiusly though, a phrase like that would only raise a marker. It would
probably then then be double checked to see what the flow of conversation was
like. Given the huge number of conversations that they're listening in to, there
must be some fantastic algorithms to remove harmless ones.

A few
months ago here in Europe, someone tried to flood Echelon by sending out an
email virus that consisted of 1.5 pages of nothing but suspect phrases and words
like "kill the president", hacker, cybercrime etc, etc. It was a pathetic
attempt to flood it but would never have worked due to the lack of structure in
the document.

RE: The idiocy continues!

2001-09-13 Thread Phillips, Glen

I've noticed that in amongst all the criticism of poor security at Boston
airport, no-one has suggested paying the people who operate the metal
detector screens and x-ray machines a bit more than what they currently get
(which is reported as on a par with someone who flips burgers in a diner).
With CNN reporting a second debris site about 6 miles from the crash in
Pennsylvania that lends support to the phone calls about a bomb, I think
that there should be more pressure to implement existing security properly
before adding more.

All the talk about extra security sounds more like politicians and
bureaucrats trying to grab more money for their little empires - helped
along, of course, by the security industry. Hopefully, as days go by and
things calm down, common sense will prevail.

Now to bring a slightly on-topic slant to the discussions - in

A: The Windows Update site is updated with new patches according to a
fixed schedule. It is possible that a recently released security patch
will be identified by MPSA, but not be added to the Windows Update site
until several weeks later. Also, you should ensure that your system is
running the latest Service Pack before chacking for Hotfixes on Windows

I personally wish there was one place to download ALL security patches

LOL, is it pick on happy clowns day today?

Funnily enough, I had thought of saying Dell and Sun and not long after in
an anaysis of the whole thing, Theregister.co.uk suggested that would be a
better 'merger' due to the different strengths and markets each one works
in.

I am NOT suggesting that is going to happen tho.
