Perl can do this with the proper Win32 modules. It can detect
file/directory changes without doing a scheduled scan.

Does anyone knows of any application can do this?

Dammit - I knew while I was typing that I was gonna have to answer
that question. And its a good question too. But I dont remember the
answer off-hand. :-/

But we (my Perl developer) did create a very similar routine in Perl a
few years back for a custom file-transfer back-end for an FTP site at
a previous employer.

Amusingly it was a couple of years before I became actively interested
in Perl myself - so I didnt pay much attention to the details at the
time.

I'll see if I cant dig something up.

Or robocopy, to do it on the cheap.

DPM can do this, as can NetBackup. I'm sure that CommVault would have an

2008-05-08 Thread Sam Cayze
Nobody really mentioned the requirement or 'detecting changes'...

SyncBack SE can do this that. Detect changes, and run a Sync/Backup
job. Or really anything else for that matter...

For $30, it's the most versatile and handy program I have ever used. I
use for about 150 different backup jobs, including all my desktops and
laptops.

I've plugged it on this list many times, but there is not an affiliation
:)

Hi All,

I have met up with the client today with the requirement on the desktop
backup.

His requirement is once the file has been saved, the backup
application will detect the change and will replicate the file to the
shared storage. I know this can be done on SAN but I have never heard of
it in desktop.

Does anyone knows of any application can do this?

Thanks.

Wei Yu

Not knocking you or your suggestion...just pointing out that we did cover
changes with robocopy. We just didn't mention it specifically. /mon and it
watches for changes...there are a lot of switch options in robocopy to
cover the scenario.

My suggestion detects changes...albeit, not for $30. :) I love SyncBack for
that.

But I suppose if you go back to his original requirement of running this on
1000 workstations, a CDP solution might make sense.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I forgot to mention, the client want the
changes to be sync immediately and not wait for the next scheduled. I have
tried telling him to use offline folders or VSS but seems like he is not
interested. He wanted a solution from some branded company like Symantec, CA
etc.

The main issue is his request of sync immediately to the shared storage which
I find it difficult to achieve.

Thanks.

How about a windows service that watches the folder and syncs as soon
as there are changes?
That can be done in a few minutes.

RE: Desktop Backup Con't

2008-05-08 Thread Ken Schaefer
Better would be a service that registers for file change notifications (so you
don't have continuous monitoring activity) and then copies the data elsewhere.

More sophisticated (but requiring a far degree of skill) would be to create a
file system filter that did the operation transparently as the file was being
written to disk.

Cheers
Ken
