that they are really not fully business functional. Why don't you want a

laptop relatively soon, and since we're primarily a Dell shop, I thought I'd
see if I could get him a new Netbook instead of a full sized laptop.
Unfortunately, it seems you can either get a Netbook with a Home o/s or you can
get a laptop with a business O/S. Can't seem to find a Netbook with a Business

Any suggestions on a machine that's small enough to be easily portable, but

Easy answer? Portability. I just emailed my Dell rep about it and I'll let
the list know what I find out. J I think that they need to make small
notebook PCs that will connect to a port replicator back at the office, yet
still be powerful enough to run MS Office, etc. J

Something to consider, especially since you said it was for a man, not to be
sexist or anything like that, but mens hands/fingers are typically larger
than womens are. I have a netbook and the keyboard is small even for me.
If you get your guy a netbook and he can't use the keyboard because his
fingers are larger, you'll end up having to get an external keyboard. Which
in my opinion just really negates the size/weight advantage of a netbook.
You should try one out before you buy it.

2010-04-14 Thread Erik Goldoff
My Toshiba is several years old, so not sure the current model offering, but
I specifically got my Satellite because it has a 12” class screen, small and
easily portable, but has CD/DVD burner, Centrino dual core, and upgraded to
500gb hard drive and 2gb RAM. I don’t lack for computing power, and it’s
*almost* as small and lightweight as a netbook. My girlfriend has an HP
netbook and although I love how portable it is, I find the screen too small
( not enough vertical height ) requiring lots of scrolling on some web sites
and document viewing. Not so with my 12” Toshiba. $$ was not cheap, but I
think I got a good value. Sony has a few supposedly good systems with small
screens, but I refuse to buy the SONY brand ever since their DVD Movie
division had the Rootkit fiasco, especially their response.

I was just thinking that one of our senior sales managers is needing a new
laptop relatively soon, and since we’re primarily a Dell shop, I thought I’d
see if I could get him a new Netbook instead of a full sized laptop.
Unfortunately, it seems you can either get a Netbook with a Home o/s or you
can get a laptop with a business O/S. Can’t seem to find a Netbook with a
Business O/S. L

Any suggestions on a machine that’s small enough to be easily portable, but
still have a business O/S?

Something to consider, especially since you said it was for a man, not to be
sexist or anything like that, but mens hands/fingers are typically larger
than womens are. I have a netbook and the keyboard is small even for me.
If you get your guy a netbook and he can't use the keyboard because his
fingers are larger, you'll end up having to get an external keyboard. Which
in my opinion just really negates the size/weight advantage of a netbook.
You should try one out before you buy it.

buy a netbook that runs almost everything (except crappy apps). Plus
print. Read books, watch movies, etc, etc. Just doesn't make sense.

Nope. Don't think so. Even after customizing it more for business than
gaming, it's still not what I'd want to give the VP. He's not into gaming,
AFAIK. Plus, with the Latitude, I can get a port replicator, where with the
Alienware, it's not an option and I'd have to buy it separately. :-)

Besides, I think it might be hard to take a middle-aged man seriously when
he's carrying an Alienware laptop. :-)

We got a similar model for one of our execs. He wanted to connect a eSata
PCI card to it and discovered it had an express card slot. It seems there
aren't a lot of devices out there for an express slot yet.

We're going to begin using this Dell for heavy travelers because of its
light weight and size:

I was just thinking that one of our senior sales managers is needing a new
laptop relatively soon, and since we're primarily a Dell shop, I thought I'd
see if I could get him a new Netbook instead of a full sized laptop.
Unfortunately, it seems you can either get a Netbook with a Home o/s or you
can get a laptop with a business O/S. Can't seem to find a Netbook with a
Business O/S. L

Any suggestions on a machine that's small enough to be easily portable, but
still have a business O/S?

Heck I just upgraded mine Monday to win 7 pro in about 10 minutes with
the windows anywhere process. The bits are already on the box (assuming
win7 starter which is what most of them come with), buy a key online and
off it goes.

21 replies so far and no one has said "then just buy the Pro version

Thanks. I'll keep that in mind. I just hate to change laptop brands just
because Dell doesn't offer a NetBook with a professional O/S. L

I bought a HP mini-note 2133 that came with XP pro for my Executive
Director. Works very good.

Multi-touch, I suppose.

I do know that Oracle has huge ads all over the Wall Street Journal
talking about putting their stuff on the iPad.

I agree, the Windows Anytime Upgrade is quick and painless. I upgraded from
Pro to Ultimate in less than 5 minutes.
