RE: Age Discrimination in IT
I think it's more of a function of the SE than age-related. Also, sometimes technology moves in a way that causes some to lose interest. Sometimes interest changes too, when I was younger I was all over the various chipsets, CPU's, etc (lol, like 386SX or DX!), and over time I've become far less latest hardware aware than latest ability to do something new. The only time I do much on the hardware side is when I need to make a recommendation, I spend a day or two getting up to speed on the latest hardware. I generally behind on mobile devices and it's about time for me to pick my first smartphone, so the OT Droid 3 conversation has been a great read. I'm with you on that, David. I couldn't even say what the newest pc chipset was. We've gotten so busy with meeting meaningful use, expanded service, etc. I don't have time to do much of anything with pc's. That's for the newer employees in the department. It's gotten that there is just so much out there, it almost forces you to pick an area or two. RE: Age Discrimination in IT
I've had a WP 7 phone since last year, and love it. Mango will make it even better. It's a vastly underrated platform. Actually, that's not true-people who have actually tried it seem to be pretty happy with it. Unfortunately, few regular (non-IT) folk have a clue about it thanks to crappy marketing on Microsoft's part. But I digress. Re: Age Discrimination in IT
Went with a friend during lunch (he is a MS employee) to the ATT store to get some cases for our phones. The sales guy was harping on the iPhone and he was talking smack on Windows in general (vulnerable, etc)[it was a fun conversation for all involved]. I shot back with patching helps and get MSE for AV and he goes MS won't let me update cause of my hacked copy of Windows. I then asked my friend, Hey, don't you get an employee discount? and he said Yes, that would be Microsoft. The look on that poor guys face was priceless. I asked him how it felt to be back in high school. His reply was that he was having flashbacks. I think we ruined his day. Mango does make it better :) On Wed, Sep 21, 2011 at 12:28 PM, John Hornbuckle john.hornbuc...@taylor.k12.fl.us wrote: I’ve had a WP 7 phone since last year, and love it. Re: Age Discrimination in IT
It's not just that it's noise... The initial changes between CPUs was a lot more significant than they tend to be today. And the releases were less frequent. And you didn't have 900 web site reviewers stealing them off the back of trucks in order to get you the absolutely first exclusive review. In many ways, the hardware is not quite the differentiator for most use cases as the software. At least not the CPU. It's still run to see changes year to year, though. Technology is fun. :) * * *ASB* *http://XeeMe.com/AndrewBaker* *Harnessing the Advantages of Technology for the SMB market… * On Wed, Sep 21, 2011 at 11:14 AM, Ben Scott mailvor...@gmail.com wrote: On Wed, Sep 21, 2011 at 10:18 AM, David Lum david@nwea.org wrote: Sometimes interest changes too, when I was younger I was all over the various chipsets, CPU’s, etc (lol, like 386SX or DX!), and over time I’ve become far less “latest hardware” aware than “latest ability to do something new”.
