RE: Alternative VoIP Solutions

2010-09-13 Thread Greg Wright
I have deployed both Asterisk and Shoretel solutions, and personally
evaluated Cisco. By far the easiest to implement was Shoretel. Its
quality was awesome, asterisk did the job but needed a lot of
maintenance and customisation, and wasn't as reliable. At the time,
hardware solutions were still thin on the ground, I imagine this has
changed.

Freeswitch looks infinitely better than Asterisk but is still early days
if you don't want to manage its config files by hand. FreePBX is under
heavy active development to produce a web front end. There is LIVE
.ISO's available.

RE: Alternative VoIP Solutions

2010-09-09 Thread Ken Cornetet
Asterisk is THE open source VoIP solution. You can learn more at
http://www.asterisk.org/

Asterisk is mind numbingly flexible (complex) and as a result, there are
pre-configured distributions available, the most popular of which is probably
PBX-in-a-flash. You can check it out here: http://pbxinaflash.net/

An up and coming VoIP system is FreeSwitch http://www.freeswitch.org/.
FreeSwitch claims to be simpler and more stable than Asterisk, but it only does
VoIP - it does not support analog line cards like Asterisk does.

RE: Alternative VoIP Solutions

2010-09-09 Thread Reimer, Mark
Lumumba,

How many phones are you looking at? I did some research when we were
looking into VOIP (about 6 months ago). The most common is Asterix, or
one of its many variants, including Trixbox. I also came across sipXecs,
which looked very interesting. From what I could learn, Asterix (or
variant) was good for 50, maybe 75 phones (although some people had it
working with 200). I can't say what support is like, but the
peer-to-peer groups seemed quite active. The cost of the phones could be
expensive, and possible network upgrades.

Of course, there are companies that offer the above with support, which
should be a lot cheaper than the companies you mentioned in your email.
I haven't dealt with any of them.

Hope this helps.

500 extensions? You may wan to look for something comercial.

We use Shoretel, which is not cheap, but competitive with the big boys..
Pros: Easy to manage, full featured, and well supported.
Cons: Vendor locking (Shoretel hardwar only works with Shortel), Windows
centric (no Mac/Linux clients for their call manager, yet.)

Other free/low cost solutions to check out:
TrixBox (By Asterisk), 3CX, Taridium, Askozia.

I was an asterisk convert and I love it. We use pots fax machines to send

Hi All,

We are exploring the market for VoIP solutions. However, known market
products like CISCO, Siemens, Alcatel are proving rather expensive for us as
a non-profit. Open source seems the way to go for us. Has any of you
deployed an open source VoIP solution? Support is a crucial factor for us,
we are based in Kenya East Africa. I will appreciate reference companies.

Thanks,

500 extensions? You may wan to look for something comercial.

We use Shoretel, which is not cheap, but competitive with the big boys..
Pros: Easy to manage, full featured, and well supported.
Cons: Vendor locking (Shoretel hardwar only works with Shortel), Windows
centric (no Mac/Linux clients for their call manager, yet.)

Other free/low cost solutions to check out:
TrixBox (By Asterisk), 3CX, Taridium, Askozia.

Good luck!

 Lumumba,

How many phones are you looking at? I did some research when we were
looking into VOIP (about 6 months ago). The most common is Asterix, or
one of its many variants, including Trixbox. I also came across
sipXecs, which looked very interesting. From what I could learn,
 Asterix (or
variant) was good for 50, maybe 75 phones (although some people had it
working with 200). I can't say what support is like, but the
peer-to-peer groups seemed quite active. The cost of the phones could
be expensive, and possible network upgrades.

Of course, there are companies that offer the above with support,
which should be a lot cheaper than the companies you mentioned in your
email.
I haven't dealt with any of them.

 Hope this helps.

It really is, and what makes it better than asterisk is the devs all
participate in the mailing list, it's very common to see a bug patched in GIT

The expandability is practically unlimited, if you can dream it up there's a

We have Cisco CME at each of our satellite sites and a combo of a traditional
PBX and Asterisk in the Head Office.

Cisco is very expensive and far from perfect. Asterisk is very flexible and
cheap. The commercial products make it easier for mass phone deployment (just
plug in the phone and it updates and configures itself). Asterisk can do this
but it is a bit trickier depending on what type of handsets you use.
