Does anybody know when there will be a firewall product included in
Vipre? I like the AV but we're looking to scrape out PCCillin too, not
just our Trend.

Like many modern applications, NOD32 will use all available resources
if/when it needs to - without interfering with other applications.

The system does not get pegged or become unresponsive.

In Kaspersky you can choose whether to install the FW portion. I'm
hoping that would be an option with Vipre as well, since I wouldn't
install it on HQ computers behind all the firewalls but I would on a
road warriors laptop. All manageable from the same dashboard. In an
ideal world, that's what you would want, imho.

All systems are Dell Optiplex (from old GX240's to current 755's). BIOS is set
to wake the systems weekdays at 5:00am. For on the fly system wakeup I have
wake-on-LAN enabled also use WOL.EXE (easily Google'd) and a batch file with
the MAC's pulled from a DHCP export.

The BIOS part could be negated by having a server fire up a batch file running
WOL.EXE and every MAC address.

Funniest thing was when I FIRST implemented it the users thought it was
disconcerting to come in and have their PC on. Now I get a helpdesk call if
they get a new PC that isn't powered on when they get in :-).

not a virus?

I have some systems configured to run a full scan - every file type,
everywhere, incl. recycle bin and .zip files many levels deep - upon
startup. However, these same systems power themselves up at 5:00am and
the users don't get in until 8:00am or later. By then the system has
completely scanned itself and applied any Windows Updates and rebooted.
Does it do any good? Dunno, but I feel better knowing every nook and

rootkit-enabled threats will hide from several Windows API functions

Fwiw, that's why we have a boot-time scanner that a) only scans if a
threat is detected (not everytime you boot system) and b) runs prior to
the Windows APIs.

All systems are Dell Optiplex (from old GX240's to current 755's). BIOS
is set to wake the systems weekdays at 5:00am. For on the fly system
wakeup I have wake-on-LAN enabled also use WOL.EXE (easily Google'd) and
a batch file with the MAC's pulled from a DHCP export.

The BIOS part could be negated by having a server fire up a batch file
running WOL.EXE and every MAC address.

Funniest thing was when I FIRST implemented it the users thought it was
disconcerting to come in and have their PC on. Now I get a helpdesk call
if they get a new PC that isn't powered on when they get in :-).

Some things don't take effect until the machine is restarted...so why
not a virus?

I have some systems configured to run a full scan - every file type,
everywhere, incl. recycle bin and .zip files many levels deep - upon
startup. However, these same systems power themselves up at 5:00am and
the users don't get in until 8:00am or later. By then the system has
completely scanned itself and applied any Windows Updates and rebooted.
Does it do any good? Dunno, but I feel better knowing every nook and
cranny has been searched...

Maintenance off-hours is a beautiful thing!

Plus knowing that the folks at Sunbelt stand close behind any product they
sell makes me lean toward Vipre. I know at the moment I have still not
moved from the 1.0 NOD32 console to the 2.0 console because the
documentation is so horrible. I am still not confortable with it. I know
it works but they recently had a bad defination get through that caused all
kinds of issues in my network. No one is perfect and that was their first
one in many years to be honest. I know when it is time for renewal if I
don't see a lot of issues on their forum I will be moving over if the price
is right. I know from my use of CounterSpy that the interface is easy and
just works which is all I need.

Like many modern applications, NOD32 will use all available resources
if/when it needs to - without interfering with other applications.

The system does not get pegged or become unresponsive.

RE: Evaluating AV

2008-08-07 Thread David Lum
Some things don't take effect until the machine is restarted...so why not a
virus?

I have some systems configured to run a full scan - every file type,
everywhere, incl. recycle bin and .zip files many levels deep - upon startup.
However, these same systems power themselves up at 5:00am and the users don't
get in until 8:00am or later. By then the system has completely scanned itself
and applied any Windows Updates and rebooted. Does it do any good? Dunno, but I
feel better knowing every nook and cranny has been searched...

Maintenance off-hours is a beautiful thing!

Stu,

That link is really cool, but what would have been better is if that info came
from a third party tester, instead of your internal tests.
You know what they say, Well of course their internal tests came out like
that, they want you to buy it.

RE: Evaluating AV

2008-08-04 Thread E. Peeters
Which client-side A/V will check an incoming message (esp the
attachment) as soon as it is received vs waiting until the user attempts
to open the message (or attachment) before checking it ?

I am evaluating some AV products but really don't have much other than
loading the admin console, pushing the client and looking at options.
Does anyone have ideas for me to do some semi-useful back-o-back
comparisons?

I would have a very thorough look at resource consumption.

Here is a chart we made recently you can use as a starting point:

Could someone give me the address to the forum where I can change the
frequency of these emails?

Thanks,
Dan
