[nysbirds-l] Queens County Bird Club - Upcoming Meeting - Wed. 03/16- Paul Sweet presents " ...Papua, New Guinea"

2016-03-14 Thread Nancy Tognan
The Queens County Bird Club will be meeting at the Alley Pond Environmental
Center, 228-06 Northern Blvd Douglaston, NY 11362
>Map of location<

at 8:00 pm on Wednesday, March 16, 2016. Free admission. Refreshments
served.

Public transportation users: Meeting location is one mile from Bayside LIRR
station; you can either walk, take the Q12 bus, or use car service located
at station.

Paul Sweet will present "Ornithological Fieldwork in the Highlands of Papua
New Guinea"

The island of New Guinea is home to over 700 species of
birds-that is, 700 and still counting. In the fall of 2014 Paul Sweet joined
a team of vertebrate specialists from the American Museum of Natural History
on an expedition to the highlands of Papua New Guinea-the nation that
occupies the eastern half of the island. The highlands are one of the most
remote areas in the world. The expedition was in search of new specimens and
new species. Sweet will talk about the adventures of fieldwork and discuss
some of the expedition's discoveries.

Born in Bristol, England, Sweet has been interested in birds
for as long as he can remember. After completing a degree in zoology at the
University of Liverpool, he traveled widely in Asia and the Americas before
working at the Raffles Museum in Singapore. In 1991 he moved to New York
City to work at the American Museum of Natural History, where he is now the
collections manager in the Ornithology Department.

RE: [nysbirds-l] Central Park geese

2016-03-14 Thread Steve Walter
Maybe I’d see it differently if the pictures were larger, but this looks like a
regular Canada Goose to me. Structurally, it looks like the canadensis (or
interior) subspecies should. The bill may be on the shorter side of average,
but I found a couple in my photo collection that look the same. Shape wise, it
looks more like Canada than Cackling. The head shape says Canada to me. Maybe
photographing a wider range of canadensis and interior (and determining if they
can be separated?) may be a project for next winter. Even now, I have a
canadensis picture on my geese gallery.

Another goose point that I might mention. I compared the Greater White-fronted
Goose from Flushing Meadows to others that I’ve photographed and noticed a head
/ bill shape / profile difference. So maybe a better way to separate North
American vs. Greenland birds (since it’s said the bill color isn’t reliable).

Isn’t waterfowl identification fun? I got to get back to identifying the duck
that appears at 2:31 of the Katrina & the Waves – Walking on Sunshine video.

[nysbirds-l] NYC AUDUBON CONSERVATION LECTURE

2016-03-14 Thread Lynne Hertzog
Tomorrow night!

PRIORITIES AND PARTNERSHIPS: FREE NYC AUDUBON CONSERVATION LECTURE
By Susan Elbin, PhD and Debra Kriensky
Tuesday, March 15, 6:30pm
Central Park Zoo 4-D Theater

NYC Audubon conducts scientific monitoring in all five boroughs to
understand how birds are using our urban environment and how this
environment affects them, via Project Safe Flight, our Jamaica Bay program,
and our Harbor Herons project. Join us as Director of Conservation and
Science Susan Elbin, PhD, and Conservation Biologist Debra Kriensky provide
updates on all the ways we've worked this year to protect New York City's
diverse birdlife—from test-flying songbirds in our glass-testing flight
tunnel... to banding common tern and black skimmer chicks... to tagging
great egrets with "texting" GPS transmitters that allow us to follow their
migration.

Lectures are free and open to the public. This series has been made
possible by the support of Claude and Lucienne Bloch.

PLEASE NOTE: Our upcoming lectures will take place at the Central Park Zoo
4-D Theater, just north of the Arsenal Building at 64th Street and Fifth
Avenue. Capacity at this theater is limited to the first 75 guests on a
first-come, first-seated basis.

Hope to see you there.

Re: [nysbirds-l] stores that display a variety of spotting scopes

2016-03-14 Thread Lisa Curtis
I'd like to second Anne's shout out about EagleOptics. Customer service
is great, you can try and return if you need to and their support of
not-for-profits is awesome. Central Westchester Audubon wasn't able to
use the same matching program SMRA used but they were helpful, pointed
out the best choice for the price and the best deal to be had for what
was purchased.

Yes, there's a thrill to going to Cape May but if you can't afford the
time EO is worth your consideration.

Re: [nysbirds-l] stores that display a variety of spotting scopes

2016-03-14 Thread Nadine Scarpa
I purchased my Kowa scope and Manfrotto tripod many years ago from CMBO.
While they did not have the lowest price, they did allow you to actually
try out the scopes, and they were more knowledgeable than B&H regarding
scopes for BIRDING. You are also supporting a great organization by
purchasing from NJ Audubon. It is worth the trip, since you can always
incorporate a wonderful day of birding down at Cape May Point and places
along the way.

(Almost 20 years later, I am still very happy with my Kowa, and my tripod,
although a little beat up, is still perfectly functioning.)

CMBO was actually very competitive with pricing, but if you find the price
to be much better at B&H (you may or may not), and you wish to, you can
simply order online at B&H once you know which model you want.

Of course please support NJ Audubon by purchasing something else, or at
least becoming a member!

2016-03-14 Thread Fran Manushkin
I am another Bob enthusiast. Last fall, I bought my Nikon binoculars from Bob.
He was terrific—he even made me look at a pair of binoculars that was cheaper
than the one I was interested in. He didn’t pressure me to buy the more
expensive Nikon. He was recommended to me by Birding Bob. So I went from
Birding Bob to Binocular Bob.
P.S. My affection for Binocular Bob was definitely increased when he told me
I looked like Jean Simmons. (In my dreams) Fran

RE: [nysbirds-l] stores that display a variety of spotting scopes

2016-03-14 Thread Amy Simmons

The key to getting awesome help in Optics at the B &H store is "Bob". If you
get anyone else you'll be disappointed, but Bob has been there for years and is
a godsend. He is extremely knowledgeable, ethical, helpful and personable. I
couldn't recommend him more highly.

I'll second that. B&H is a fantastic store to buy optics and they are great in
customer service ON-LINE.

I too went to their store to buy a scope and they are of almost zero help.

They do have an amazing multi-floor store. If you've never been there, it is
worth a trip one day.

I'm interested in shopping for a birding spotting scope. Are they any stores
in the downstate NY area that display several makes and models that a customer
can look through and compare?

Apparently the Cape May Bird Observatory has such a store, but I'd rather not

Re: [nysbirds-l] stores that display a variety of spotting scopes

2016-03-14 Thread Lynne Hertzog
Let me add this to the discussion - there are on-line stores that are much
more "bird friendly" than B&H.
Let me explain - several years ago, I wrote and called B&H several times to
ask for a contribution to NYC Audubon (NYCA). I wrote that many birders in
the city were buying from them, and that a small contribution such as some
optics or a credit, would not only provide B&H with further customers by
the advertising that NYCA would provide at our annual fundraiser, but would
also go to help bird conservation in New York City.
I was hoping for a favorable response, but instead, B&H simply did not even
have the courtesy to respond at all. I tried two years in a row.
On the other hand, Eagle Optics, an online store, has been supportive of
many birding organizations (they provided a pair of binoculars for multiple
years to NYCA), and, of course, Cape May Bird Observatory as well. I
believe you can negotiate with Eagle Optics if you find a better price
elsewhere.

Also, regarding checking out scopes - I found birders very generous in
allowing me to look through their scopes when I was in the field. This is
how I did my research. Everybody has a scope out for shorebirds!

Good birding.
