[nysbirds-l] Video of Thick-billed Murre, Brooklyn (New York City)

2019-01-18 Thread David Barrett
Gus Keri captured some excellent footage of today's THICK-BILLED MURRE
swimming north of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge off the west coast of
Brooklyn. This is only the second-ever eBird record of the species in the
Upper Bay of New York Harbor. View the video here:

[nysbirds-l] Cackling Geese Van Cortlandt Park Bronx Co.

2019-01-18 Thread Andrew Baksh
Earlier today, I found two Cackling Geese among the 989 White-cheeked Geese
(Branta Canadensis) flock that had gathered on the Parade Grounds at Van
Cortlandt Park.

There were several small non Cackling candidates among the flock so exercise
caution when sorting through the Branta Canadensis if you do go.

Cheers,

Re: [nysbirds-l] Thick-billed Murre in Brooklyn Now

2019-01-18 Thread Ryan
I caught sight of the TBMU at around 3:50 from 92 street pedestrian overpass
and followed it up to the Veterans Pier. It came in just a few feet from the
end of the pier, then floated inland to the area just south of the wastewater
treatment plant. It stuck around for a while then dove and we lost sight of it
after that.

Thanks for the alert!

[nysbirds-l] NYCA Lecture - Tuesday, 7pm. Really good!

2019-01-18 Thread Lynne Hertzog
*Mark your calendar for this one!*

*MANAGING RAT MIGRATION: ECOLOGY AND CONSERVATION IMPLICATIONS OF BROWN
RATSBy Matthew CombsTuesday, January 22, 7pm*

*Location: **Reidy Hall at the Unitarian Church of All Souls, 1157
Lexington Avenue
 between
79th and 80th Streets in Manhattan*

Learn about New York City’s least favorite furry friend from Matthew Combs,
whose work studying the genetics of the City’s rats recently caused quite a
stir. Controlling the City’s rat populations can often have severe
implications for raptors such as Red-tailed Hawks, so it can be helpful for
bird lovers to learn about these common critters. Combs will explore the
biology of rats, the risks they pose, and even debunk some rat myths. We
will then hear how he uses genetics and ecology to understand rat
populations in our city and how that might translate to management goals
and priorities. Matthew Combs conducts his research as a doctoral candidate
at Fordham University.

Should be extremely interesting!
Hope you’ll come.

This lecture is free and open to the public. This series has been made
possible by the support of Claude and Lucienne Bloch.

If it continues along that breakwall the next point of easy access to
intercept it after the VN bridge would be Veterans Memorial Pier at Bay
Ridge Avenue and Shore Parkway.

If it continues along that breakwall the next point of easy access to
intercept it after the VN bridge would be Veterans Memorial Pier at Bay
Ridge Avenue and Shore Parkway.

Good luck

Re: [nysbirds-l] Varied Thrush, Friday 1/18 [Richmond Co., NY - Staten Island, NYC]

2019-01-18 Thread Adrian Burke
As reported, the Varied Thrush was seen today in the span of about five
minutes in the northern part of Clove Lakes Park around 10:55 am this
morning. It stayed up in trees while we saw it, moving perches a few times
before it was lost flying to the south, losing height.

A Yellow-breasted Chat continues further south in the park as previously
reported. At times it gave fairly good views moving actively through bushes
and trees, feeding on remaining berries, before it disappeared into some
low thickets and was not refound.

At the southern lake in the park, a Cackling Goose was sleeping just
minutes ago in with Canada Geese on the edge of the lake’s ice. It had its
head tucked in most of the time, but it was easy to pick out by its smaller
size and paleness relative to all the surrounding Canada Geese.

A Winter Wren, Hermit Thrush, and Swamp Sparrow continue in the vicinity
of the chat.

[nysbirds-l] Non-live Bird Transport Request

2019-01-18 Thread beachmed
The recently reported dead Common Murre found near Triton Beach/Tiana Beach
(Dune Rd), was recovered and frozen on Wednesday.

If there are any birders heading to Montauk/Shinnecock/Points East over the
next few days, who could possibly help with the transport of the frozen bird to
The American Museum of Natural History, NYC, please contact me off-line. The
bird is located in East Quogue, near Sunrise Highway, but a more convenient
meeting point could be arranged. The Murre will be kept frozen, and packed
appropriately for the move.

Thanks for anyone’s help in getting this bird to Paul Sweet.
