[nysbirds-l] Barrows Goldeneye - Pelham Bay Park, Bronx 12/30
Hi All, Late this afternoon, there was a very nice drake BARROW'S GOLDENEYE which I viewed from Orchard Beach as it foraged with a raft of Common Goldeneye just off High Island (the island with the big antennas). The bird was still there when I left. Good Birding and Happy New Year! [nysbirds-l] Barrows Goldeneye - Bayville, Nassau Co
I just recently had a female Barrows Goldeneye in a flock of 60+ goldeneye off of Oak Neck Beach in Bayville. Parts of the flock took off to the east and I haven’t been able to relocated the Barrows in a brief search of the nearby coast, though it is likely still nearby. Additionally, there is an hatch year goldeneye with a very stubby bill in the flock that might provide some interesting study. Dave Eib and Seth Wollney found a female Barrows Goldeneye on the pond at Moravian Cemetery. This is exactly where it was seen a few years back so most likely a returning bird. [nysbirds-l] Barrows Goldeneye, Lake Montauk
The Male & Female Barrows Goldeneye were seen at Montauk Lake from South Lake Drive at 1:45 PM today. Seen at Montauk Point were the Reported Immature Lesser Black-back Gull, 1 Iceland Gull, 25 Common Eiders and an impressive number of Scoters. Best guess- 10,000 Scoters. Predominantly Surf Scoter with large numbers of Common Scoters. An occasional White-winged Scoter mixed in. [nysbirds-l] Barrows Goldeneye - Jamaica Bay W.R.
I observed a drake BARROWS GOLDENEYE on a raft of approximately 100 COMMON GOLDENEYE on the West Pond at Jamaica Bay early this morning. I was aware that a BARROWS was around Jamaica Bay again this winter since the Brooklyn Christmas Count when it was spotted by Doug Gochfeld. I arrived at the breach along the south dike about 7:10 in the half light. Although some Goldeneye were already in the air when I arrived, the BARROWS stayed put until about 7:30 affording me repeated good scope views. Good luck if you go! [nysbirds-l] Barrows Goldeneye - Jamaica Bay W.R.
A drake Barrow's Goldeneye was present on the West Pond this morning, observed from 7 to 7:30 AM on the north side of the pond among numerous Common Goldeneye, Red-breasted Merganser, Snow Geese and other waterfowl. I had a nice look with the scope at 50x from the south side of the pond in the early morning sun. [nysbirds-l] Barrows Goldeneye, Common Redpolls, Snow Buntings, Iceland Gull
These are just a few additions to yesterday's posts from various observers of Jamaica Bay and Jones Beach birds. Midmorning, the drake Barrow's Goldeneye was present in the northwest bay - allowing only distant scope views. He was with a small flock of male and female Common Goldeneye. An additional 6 female were on the West Pond. A stop at the visitors center at 6:15 pm yielded at least 5 American Woodcock "peenting" and whirring in the south garden. Among the few birds at Jones Beach there was a flock of 16 Snow Buntings on the median in front of the Nature Center and a pair of Tree Swallows flying around the dunes east of the West End 2 parking lot. American Oystercatchers were in relative abundance in the air and on the beaches around Field 10 fishing piers and, as previously reported, Common Redpolls could be found in the pine trees at the east end of the parking lot. There were numerous seals bobbing in the bay as well as a Harp Seal hauled out on the far beach opposite the Jones Beach Coast Guard Station. At Point Lookout the 6 Harlequin Ducks continued, as did the juvenile Iceland Gull hanging nearby in the Inlet. A seventh Harlequin Duck, a female, fed alone by the western-most of the beach jetties. The previously large Common Eider rafts were reduced to a single female bird. There were single Common and Red-throated Loons near the west side of the inlet. Near the western jetty a pair of Harbor Seals looked back at their human observers.
