[nysbirds-l] Black-necked Stilt, Jamaica Bay

2024-05-26 Thread Joshua Malbin
While out kayak birding Ruffle Bar in Jamaica Bay, Louis DeMarco and I just
had a Black-necked Stilt fly off in the direction of West Pond. Worth
checking there and East Pond, most likely.

Good birding,

Joshua Malbin

[nysbirds-l] Black-necked Stilt & 2 American Golden-Plovers continue at Nickerson Beach...

2019-04-22 Thread Andrew Baksh
A few of us who had staked out the known location of the Black-necked Stilt
were just now rewarded with satisfying views after patiently sitting it out for
several hours. The bird did not stick around for more than 10 mins after we saw
it and was last seen heading in the direction of Point Lookout. I will check on
my way out to see if I could find where else it hangs out.

Many thanks to Fliepe Pimental who spotted the Black-necked Stilt feeding near
the entrance booth entrance at Nickerson and then conveyed that to Harry Taylor
and I.

Also, thanks to Robert Proniewych for his intel and Tom Fiore who generously
took the time to post to the list serves.

The two American Golden-Plovers also continues in the same location as earlier
reported.

Sharing is caring! Keep the listserves alive y’all!

re:[nysbirds-l] Black-necked Stilt, Nassau County NY 4/22! (Monday), & re: Forest Park (Queens Co.) 4/21

2019-04-22 Thread Thomas Fiore
There is at least 1 very early a.m. Monday 4/22 report of the Black-necked
Stilt, as well as 2 American Golden-Plovers being seen at Nickerson Beach in
Nassau County, NY. See: https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S55254216
(I’ve not been, just passing the
report on here. Hoping those seeking will be able to re-find and report this.)

--
Responding to Bob Lewis’ notes from Queens Co. (NYC) on 4/21 lack of migrants -

Regarding Forest Park & the well-known water-hole there, presumably there is a
lot (or at least some) water available in other sections of that park lately,
for birds needing to drink or bathe? I’ve not been this spring, but it is
typically at its best when few or almost no other water is available nearby, as
that brings the birds (when they are in the area, obviously) to that one place
and not to random puddles, rivuets, & such which may be temporarily formed
after the heavy rains of recent. I don’t know just where within Forest Park,
which is of course a fairly large well-wooded park, the Yellow-throated Warbler
reported there on 4/19 was. (See: https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S55122657
) It may be there still, or could
have moved on. In any event, it seems, from reports, that Queens has not had
that much of the warbler drop-in as some other places (such as Kings or New
York counties) in & around N.Y.C. and more particularly, up (or down, in the
older parlance) the New England Atlantic shore, most of all it seemed in
easternmost Mass. recently. But Blue Grosbeaks, for example, are still being
turned up in adjacent New England states (just this Monday another in
Connecticut for example.)

It’s been rather striking to see the reports of any number of
neotropical-wintering species (in particular) that appear to have ‘overshot'
the local area of NYC to some extent and gone into New England & even (some) on
to Canada, by now. This may happen with, for example, Yellow Warbler on a
more-usual basis (with some April arrivals going straight to some breeding
areas, bypassing areas they do not breed in, or scantily so), but one might
wonder if more & more of the spring migrants are going as directly as possible
to breeding areas, when weather allows it. The weather and related bird
movements in the east of the past week are seemingly unusual - the find of one
Black-whiskered Vireo on Martha’s Vineyard was just to underscore the larger
sample of many migrants that got “sling-shot” up to farther north &/or earlier
than usual, within the same time-frame / weather events. In any case, hopefully
Forest Park will be more active soon enough. But if the rains keep coming
regularly, don’t count on the justly-famous water-hole there to be as
productive as when the weather has been dry for a while.

best, and good birding,

Tom Fiore

Subject: Re: [nysbirds-l] Manhattan, NYC 4/21; Forest Park Queens -
Just for the record, I spent yesterday morning in Forest Park, Queens, from
about 10:30 to 12:30. It was dead. Dead, dead, dead. I stayed in the
vicinity of the water hole. Beyond question the worst birding trip I've ever
had to Forest Park, and I've been going there in the spring since 1981 (with a
few missed years).
I did not see or hear a single warbler. Nada. Zilch. There were also very
few other birders. One birder said he saw a Prairie Warbler at the water hole.
Other than Robin and Grackle, there were no migrants.

Alas, the word is that the Stilt along with the American Golden Plovers are not
to be seen at the moment. I am not sure why or the cause for the Stilt to be a
no show at the moment.

Like you, I did not have a chance to see the bird yesterday and would be keen
on any positive reports.

[nysbirds-l] Black-necked Stilt at Nickerson

2019-04-21 Thread Steve Walter
I posted a picture of the Nickerson Beach (Nassau co.) Black-necked Stilt on
my website at http://stevewalternature.com/ . It's one of 483 pictures I
took - all from my car. The main reason for taking so many was the less than
good lighting most of the morning. As I discussed with some people, adults
stilts are not just black and white. In good light - which came through
eventually -, they look glossy - as this picture kind of shows. The stilt
was faithful to the one pool, repeatedly going from one end to the other. I
advised a few people that had stepped out of their cars that they could be
rewarded with close looks if they waited in their cars. They were indeed
rewarded. So it's unfortunate to hear of different behavior this afternoon.
I think I've heard that before - like with the puddle birds at Heckscher
last year. The afternoon is when the trouble seem to occur, for whatever
reason that is.

That sort of segues to another topic. Maybe a twofold problem. One is of the
fragmentation of reporting. I went to Nickerson this morning, having heard
on a forum I subscribe to about the American Golden Plovers found yesterday.
But I talked to people today that didn't know about them, mainly because it
was not posted to this list. That's a good species for April and deserves
more pub. If you're a shorebird aficionado like I am, that's a rare
opportunity to photograph - if you behave around them - Goldens in true
non-breeding plumage (as opposed to fading alternate or juvenile). But then
maybe, if it was posted everywhere, the non-bevahers would have arrived
sooner? So I don't know. It's a conversation that's come up before, and
likely will again. But a Black-necked Stilt surely has to be shared. And
sorry if it got double posted. I never know if my own post is getting
through.

[nysbirds-l] Black-necked Stilt - Iroquois NWR

2017-06-21 Thread Willie D'Anna
The BLACK-NECKED STILT continues at Kumph Marsh, Iroquois NWR. The bird is
extremely difficult to see because of all the vegetation. Betsy and I walked
Feeder Road for the entire length of Kumph Marsh and did not see it. Then,
on the way back, Betsy spotted it where the vegetation was slightly lower.
The bird walked left and almost disappeared behind the vegetation before
making a short flight and completely disappearing for the remainder of our
time there. Another person looked after we left and did not see it. So, long
story short, you will need some persistence and/or a bit of luck to see this
bird.

Good birding!

[nysbirds-l] Black-necked Stilt and Warblers at Forest Lawn Cemetery (Buffalo)

2017-05-11 Thread joetf1973

The Black-necked stilt was present at 3:45 pm today at South Feeder Marsh in
the Tonawanda WMA. The bird was initially found by Celeste Morien at Kumpf
Marsh (Iroquois NWR) and was re-found today by Greg Lawrence.

This morning at Forest Lawn there were a few more warblers than I have seen
lately - Alec picked out 2 Cape May, in addition there were Black-and-White,
Blackburnian, Magnolia, Yellow, Yellow-rumped, Black-throated Blue, American
Redstart, Bay-breasted, Black-throated Green, Northern Parula and Palm. Others
had Northern Waterthrush - I did not.

Warbler Ridge and Scajacquada Creek near Main St were both birdy areas in the
cemetery.

The bird is in the same location right now. Can be viewed from the shoulder of
the roadway at the sign identifying the environmentally sensitive area.

[nysbirds-l] Black-necked Stilt continues, Staten Island, NYC 5/9

2014-05-09 Thread Thomas Fiore

Friday, 9 May, 2014 -

A Black-necked Stilt is continuing at Goethal's Bridge Pond on the NW
sector of Staten Island, New York City (Richmond County, NY). This
bird is reported to sometimes be hidden or evasive at the site, so
some patience may be required. It is generally being found at many
hours of the day, and has been seen as late as dusk on some prior
days. A scope definitely desired!

Migration 'fall-out' continues today, in many areas in the region.

good luck to all who go seeking the B.-n. Stilt, & also elsewhere.

[nysbirds-l] Black-necked Stilt in Staten Island

2014-05-07 Thread John J. Collins
The previously reported Black-necked Stilt is still present at the Goethals
Pond in Staten Is. It appeared at 4:10 PM but more toward the back center of
the pond and walked east. I'm so glad I saw it as this has been a nemesis bird
for me for NYS since I started birding!

[nysbirds-l] Black-necked Stilt, NYC 5/4

2014-05-05 Thread Thomas Fiore
Sunday eve., 4 May, 2014 - Staten Island, N.Y. City

Just learned of this... a Black-necked Stilt was found & then seen by
at least 3 observers on Staten Island's north side, at the Goethal's
Bridge Pond area; a report apparently sent out just after 8 p.m. [?]
and the Stilt apparently "best seen from Trailer Park Row A". The
finder is Richard Veit. Should the stilt be seen again this morning,
word will go out again; perhaps first via the SINaturalist group-list.

(odds on this being the Prospect Park bird of the other day? or are
there a number of these north of typical range now...?0

good birding,

Keep your eyes up!

2014-05-02 Thread keir randall
hi all
Thanks to Doug Gochfeld for getting the word out on the Prospect Park flyover
Stilt this morning. It was the highlight of an amazing day! I got a pretty weak
photo of the bird and tried to put it up on my flickr site. I'm now having
problems accessing flickr and will have to leave it for now. This link may

[nysbirds-l] Black-necked Stilt at Cupsogue, Suffolk, LI

2013-06-18 Thread Shaibal Mitra
While digiscoping a tern on the flats east of Moriches Inlet around 2:00 pm, I
looked up and was stunned to see a Black-necked Stilt flying past from east to
west. Hastily stashing my small camera in my pocket, I grabbed my SLR, turned
it on, and pointed it toward the receding recurvirostrid as it dropped low to a
marsh island favored as a roosting site by large shorebirds--I thought it would
land. Unfortunately, in my ineptitude, I confused it in my viewfinder with the
skimmers and oystercatchers in the area where I expected it to alight. Thus,
the several photos I managed were neither centered nor focused, but I hope they
will suffice for the increasingly stringent requirements of local eBird review
(I noticed today that none of the dozens of Arctic Terns photographed here over
the past three weeks have passed muster thus far).

Anyway, the stilt did not land where I thought it did. The only other place
nearby that I thought might be attractive to it was the little dreen east of
the camper area, but close inspection there proved fruitless also.

Other notables around Moriches Inlet today included two breeding plumaged Royal
Terns at Pikes Beach, and, on the flats, my first three first-summer Least
Terns of the season, two first-summer Arctic Terns, and a breeding-plumaged
hendersoni Short-billed Dowitcher, continuing from Sunday, when found by
Michael McBrien.

Photos will be posted here soon:

[nysbirds-l] Black-necked Stilt at Jones Beach (Nassau Co.) 5-29-12

2012-05-29 Thread TESSA1
I received a message from Ed Becher at about 2:15 this afternoon while he
was with a Black-necked Stilt at Zach's Bay, resting beside an
Oystercatcher. He initially found this bird in one of the shallow ponds within
 the Golf
Course area before it flew over to the Bay. I didn't get to chase this
one, but birders should be aware that Stilt sightings are often not just 1
day wonders. Some can linger for days, like one I recall that stayed at Cow
Meadow Park in Freeport for at least 3 days back in about 2003, so hopefully
it'll hang around for others.

[nysbirds-l] black necked stilt

2011-05-29 Thread mikehigg
One black necked stilt appeared at the end of Sebonac Inlet Road in Southampton
this morning at 9:30. It was feeding at the shoreline near the bulkhead. It
was in the company of many ruddy turnstones, a piping plover and a willet. A
jogger flushed the flock and the stilt flew across the channel to land behind
the sandy island/peninsula directly across from the road. The area where the
stilt is appearing appears to be a favorite spot for fishermen, joggers,
bicyclists and locals. Earlier, a second stilt was seen.
