[nysbirds-l] Fork-tailed Flycatcher: NO - Greig Farm, Dutchess County
No sightings of yesterday’s Fork-tailed Flycatcher at its previously favored perches or any of the other potentially promising locations at Greig Farm this morning, despite considerable observer effort. With more than 24 hours elapsed since the last observation through equally intense coverage all day yesterday, it seems increasingly likely that the bird has moved on. While this species is known for its tendency to vanish quickly when it does pop up in our region, lingering individuals are not unheard of, so local birders would do well to keep an eye out just in case it is still hanging around somewhere nearby. Best of luck to any brave subsequent searchers, and good migration birding to all. The fall vagrant season is still young; this is unlikely to be the last surprise! [nysbirds-l] Fork-tailed Flycatcher in Dutchess County 9/17
Hi all, This morning while birding with Sean Carroll, I spotted a Fork-tailed Flycatcher at Greig Farm just outside of Red Hook in Dutchess County. Sean and I observed and photographed the bird for about 40 minutes until it disappeared into a patch of goldenrod at around 8:15am. Details are in our list here: https://ebird.org/checklist/S118887667 While it hasn't been seen in almost three hours, I suspect it is still around in the same general vicinity. Its most recent location was in this field here: https://maps.app.goo.gl/x13kfzmumpUSY4PX8 Interestingly, another Dutchess birder texted me later this morning to report that she had a Fork-tailed Flycatcher at the same location on Thursday (9/15), but it was not photographed, and she did not realize her bird was a Fork-tailed until details of today's sighting emerged. This means that this bird has potentially been around for three days or more, and could be a harbinger of its continued stickiness. Her list is here: https://ebird.org/checklist/S118791533 One last note: Greig Farm is an active orchard, and many folks were arriving on site to pick fruit as I departed just before 11am. If you go to chase this bird, be sure to be courteous to the farm operators and visitors, and park only in designated areas. The owners of Greig Farm have been exceptionally kind in allowing birders to bird the farm, and we should all return the favor by being respectful of their land and their operations. Good birding! [nysbirds-l] Fork-tailed Flycatcher location additional notes
This from one of the finders: "I was on the top walking/biking trail, on the eastern side of the road that divides the two sides. It was happily feeding at about the halfway point of that side. It was still there yesterday when I left about 5:00 " And this from another finder wrote: "As you're approaching from the frying pan parking lot, we saw it at the second wooden bench on the left side, as you're getting closer to the bridge" Good Luck -- Richard Guthrie New Baltimore The Greene County -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME.htm http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES.htm http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birding.aba.org/maillist/NY01 Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

Re: [nysbirds-l] FORK-TAILED FLYCATCHER-YES 11/22
I went again today and stayed several hours (between 11:30am and 4:00pm) at the sanctuary. The bird was mostly in the southwestern area of the sanctuary, moving between several trees back and forth while feeding (catching flying insects). I never saw it in the feeders’ area, where it used to be last Saturday. Around 2:45pm the bird was about 300-400 feet from the trail when it disappeared behind the trees. It was spotted a couple of times in the same area but it was not seen again after 2:50-2:55PM. I left at 4pm and there were several birders waiting for the bird to reappear. If you were thinking of visiting the site tomorrow, I would recommend that you check out Birdingonthe.Net before leaving home. Good luck! [nysbirds-l] Fork-tailed Flycatcher in Stamford, CT continues
It is out of state, but the previously reported Fork-tailed Flycatcher in Cove Island Park, Stamford, CT continued to thrill many birders today with excellent views. The minimal restrictions placed on where birders could view from actually provided an undisturbed, easily viewable area for the bird to perch in fairly close to the birders. Re: [nysbirds-l] Fork-tailed Flycatcher
Great Picture! You were lucky of being there yesterday to take decent pictures of this bird since this morning it was extremely difficult to do so and the light was not the best either. Nobody was allowed to approach (less than 125 feet from) the bird. Access to the area was constrained and there were several blockades around the sections of the sanctuary where the flycatcher was perching. Only birders with good scopes were able to get a good mirror image of the bird. If you are interested in bird photography and you want to take a decent picture of the Fork-tailed Flycatcher you may need a pretty long lens (above 500mm) and a 1.7x or 2.0x teleconverter since you will not be able to come close enough to take good shots.
