[nysbirds-l] Sandhill Crane pair in Tupper Lake (Franklin Co.)

2023-03-27 Thread Joan Collins
I observed a Sandhill Crane pair at noon today along Route 30 in Tupper
Lake. They were walking into the marsh where there was a nest last year -
the marsh is currently under the snow! (Marsh by the bowling alley with a
viewing deck.) I took a few photos (although not a great time of day for
photography) that I included in eBird at
https://ebird.org/atlasny/checklist/S131988375 . The male (larger bird) was
continuously displaying. Sandhill Cranes have been nesting in Tupper Lake
every year now since 2016. (First 6 years in the marsh between the Raquette
River and Simon Pond off Raquette River Dr. and last year for the first time
in the marsh off Route 30 by the bowling alley.) They return in late March
each year when we still have winter weather conditions.

[nysbirds-l] Sandhill Crane - Yes, In Napeague

2019-05-29 Thread Eileen Schwinn
Currently, the previously reported Sandhill Crane is still in the field, south
of the Fish Factory in Napeague. One must walk down the sandy Trail, along
the RR tracks, nearer the houses on the west and south of Cranberry Hill Rd. to
see the bird.

[nysbirds-l] Sandhill Crane -yes

2019-05-27 Thread Christopher Gangemi
The Sandhill Crane originally reported to eBird by Bruce Horwith and found
earlier in the day by Paul D. was still present in front of the Napeague fish
factory at 3:45.

There is currently lots of westbound traffic and the bird was quite close to
Cranberry Hole road. I also watched 5 guys with fishing rods and an off leash
dog saunter by not more than 40 feet from the bird. It seemed unperturbed, but
who knows what’s going on inside its head. This bird is clearly a wildcard.

Careful parking. I’d suggest pulling off the road slightly west of the factory
and locating the bird (was in a fenced area) from your car so as not to
accidentally flush it. Not much room.

[nysbirds-l] Sandhill Crane pair back in Tupper Lake/more arrivals/migrants

2017-04-10 Thread Joan Collins
4/10/17 Long Lake (Hamilton Co.) and Tupper Lake (Franklin Co.) (High 70s
for temps today!)

10 first-of-the-season species today:

*Sandhill Crane - pair in the marsh where they nested last year in Tupper
Lake

*Wilson's Snipe - calling from a Tupper Lake marsh

*Osprey - sitting in the nest they used last year (along Route 30 in Long
Lake) - which is in a dead snag in completely iced-over Minnow Pond! (Their
nest was originally a Great Blue Heron's nest.)

*Tree Swallow - Tupper Lake

*Winter Wren - singing along Sabattis Circle Road in Long Lake

*Hermit Thrush - several calling outside our home at dawn

*Purple Finch - outside our home

*Chipping Sparrow - outside our home

*Vesper Sparrow - 3 (2 along Sabattis Circle Road in Long Lake, and 1 along
Route 30 in Tupper Lake)

*Savannah Sparrow - 2 (with a Vesper Sparrow along Route 30 in Tupper Lake)

A Bald Eagle was perched low over the water fishing near the causeway in
Tupper Lake. There were more Eastern Phoebes in Tupper Lake today.
Additional sparrow species (7 today): Amer. Tree, Fox, and Song Sparrows,
and Dark-eyed Junco. Three Gray Jays were observed - 1 along Route 30 and 2
at the Round Lake Trailhead in Long Lake.

[nysbirds-l] Sandhill Crane in Wainscot

2017-01-14 Thread Karen Rubinstein
The Sandhill Crane in Wainscot New York continues. It is being seen at the edge
of the pond from Wainscot Main road across from the chapel. It is often
obscured by the grasses at the pond's edge so be patient and wait for the crane
to raise its head

There is 1 sandhill crane associated with a large flock of Canada geese
(and 1 snow goose) at Wainscott Pond (East Hampton). The field is private
but the bird can be seen from the road. I had 4 purple sandpipers FOS on
the ocean jetty south of Hook Pond (East Hampton).

[nysbirds-l] Sandhill Crane pair/Northern Shoveler pair/Red Crossbills/Common Loons/Black-backed Woodpeckers, etc.

2016-04-11 Thread Joan Collins
First-of-the-season (*)

4/11/16 Long Lake (Hamilton Co.)

Bufflehead - pair on Little Tupper Lake (with a male Hooded Merganser)

Hooded Merganser - male with the Bufflehead pair

Great Blue Heron - flying over Tarbell Hill Lane in Long Lake

Gray Jay - 2 at Sabattis Bog

Boreal Chickadee - 2 at Sabattis Bog

Winter Wren - 1 at Sabattis Bog

The Pine Siskin invasion continues at our home. I hope things will slow
down with the warm-up coming mid-week.

There were over 20 Blue Jays that flew in when I brought food for the Gray
Jays at Sabattis Bog - I agreed with the 2 Gray Jays that it was
overwhelming (and very loud!), so I drove down the road a bit. I heard
Boreal Chickadees giving really interesting vocalizations right outside my
car window, so I stopped. I was standing under a tree listening to the
Boreal Chickadee when one of the Gray Jays silently flew to a branch a few
inches over my head! The communication was, "If you feed me here, those
Blue Jays won't know!" So I walked to the car and brought back some raisins
and the Gray Jay very quietly cached them - the Blue Jays never noticed!

4/10/16 Newcomb, Minerva (Essex Co.), Long Lake (Hamilton Co.) and Tupper
Lake (Franklin Co.)

On a tour with 4 birders (2 from eastern Long Island and 2 from the Albany
area) we spent most of the day in boreal habitat. It was a lovely day!
Here are some of the species found:

Amer. Black Duck

Ring-necked Duck

Hooded Merganser - several

Common Merganser

Ruffed Grouse - 1 displaying along Sabattis Circle Road

Wild Turkey

Turkey Vulture

Bald Eagle - 2

Sharp-shinned Hawk - 2

Red-tailed Hawk - 1

*Sandhill Crane - I heard that the Sandhill Crane pair had returned to
Tupper Lake last week. At the end of the day, we ventured to Tupper Lake
and spotted the pair from Raquette River Road. We stopped to look at
waterfowl and I noticed a "rock" way out in the marshes. One of the Long
Island birders did too, but as we were driving away, he said we should back
up - and sure enough, the "rock" lifted its head from the vegetation and
moved! We didn't see its mate, but after a while, it took flight and joined
the second bird farther away in the marsh. They gave their trumpeting call
together several times - beautiful!

Black-backed Woodpecker - 4 (1 male working on its nest cavity in Newcomb, a
male and female observed in Minerva, and 1 heard giving the rattle call
along the Roosevelt Truck Trail in Minerva)

Northern Flicker

Pileated Woodpecker

Gray Jay - 3 (1 along Route 30 in Long Lake and 2 at Sabattis Bog in Long
Lake)

Common Raven

Boreal Chickadee - 2 in Newcomb

Red-breasted Nuthatch

Brown Creeper - several with a few singing

Winter Wren - several (including 2 singing)

Golden-crowned Kinglet

Amer. Robin

Waxwing species - flying flock of ~40 birds too far away to tell Cedar from
Bohemian

Amer. Tree Sparrow

Song Sparrow

Dark-eyed Junco

Red-winged Blackbird

Common Grackle

Purple Finch - many singing!

Red Crossbill - 9 (2 flyover calling birds along Route 28N in Newcomb, 1
female observed with 2 Pine Siskins gritting in the road on Route 28N in
Minerva, and 6 found along Route 30 in Long Lake - including a couple of
fledglings!)

Pine Siskin - many!

Amer. Goldfinch

Evening Grosbeak - several, including a nice observation of a male in
Newcomb

4/9/16 Long Lake

Sadly, I found a dead Hermit Thrush in the road on Route 28N in Long Lake.
Hermit Thrushes and Amer. Robins spend a lot of time in the plowed roadways
when we have snowy conditions in April.

4/8/16 Tupper Lake (Franklin Co.)

Ring-necked Duck - many continue to be observed on Tupper Lake

Common Loon - on Simon Pond

4/7/16 Long Lake

*Northern Shoveler - pair observed on Long Lake! This may be the first
record of this species in Hamilton Co. since it is not listed in Mike
Peterson's "Birds of Hamilton County, New York". A photo is posted to my
Facebook page below.

Gray Jay - one at Sabattis Bog

4/6/16 Long Lake

*Common Loon - one observed on Little Tupper Lake

Amer. Kestrel - 1 along Route 30

Yellow-bellied Sapsucker - a male that spent a long time eating sunflower
seed hearts at one of our feeders! This is the first time I've observed
this species at a feeder. I took photos and posted them to my Facebook page
below.

Gray Jay - 1 at the Round Lake Trailhead

Boreal Chickadee - 2 along Route 30

[nysbirds-l] Sandhill Crane & Caspian Tern - Coxsackie, Greene County

2011-08-21 Thread Richard Guthrie
This evening (5 PM, Sunday August 21), I watched a CASPIAN TERN fly south
down the Hudson River at the Coxsackie Boat Launch. It kept going.

Later (6 PM) I found a SANDHILL CRANE in a newly planted potato field on the
south side of Farm to Market (aka Co Rt. 57), just south of the village of
Coxsackie. The field is just east of the junction of Stacey Road & F-t-M
Road.

I watched the crane for about 15 minutes or so, until the skies opened up,
pouring rain and lashing out lightning. I left to go into town for a while.
When I came back, I could not relocate the bird. Several other birders
arrived and canvassed the other fields in the area, until it got dark. They
were equally unsuccessful in relocating the bird. There are plenty of crane
happiness fields in the vicinity. So perhaps it simply ducked behind one of
the hedgerows and is still in the area.

I'll post a few fuzzy pictures on my blog - listed below, and on the HM
Birds Yahoo site.

[nysbirds-l] Sandhill Crane reports in Ulster Co

2010-07-23 Thread Valerie Freer
A previously reported Sandhill Crane spent the night of June 1 at the Bashakill
in Sullivan County.
A second report on June 19 was of a Sandhill Crane seen between the local
hospital and airport at Ellenville (Ulster Co), about 13 miles northeast of the
Bashakill location.
A third sighting of what seems likely to be the same bird was on July 20. This
bird was seen in a large field along Port Ben Rd between the villages of
Napanoch and Wawarsing, about 3 miles northeast of the Ellenville site (and
close to two NYS prisons).
All of the sightings were close to Rt 209 within the long valley that parallels
the Shawangunk Ridge.
Since Sandhill Cranes may not breed until 3 or 4 (or more) years, this bird may
be a wandering juvenile, but their recent upstate breeding alerts us to another
possibility.
Any searchers are required to stay on public roads in the Ulster Co sighting
areas.

[nysbirds-l] Sandhill Crane at Marshlands Conservancy in Rye this AM

2010-05-04 Thread Angus Wilson
Early this morning, Tom Burke found a *SANDHILL CRANE* in the field at
Marshlands Conservancy in Rye (Westchester Co.). Unfortunately, the bird
vanished shortly thereafter but might be worth keeing an eye out for in the
general area. This is the 300th species for Marshlands, a remarkable total
any location and a fine testament to years of diligent 'patchwork' by Tom
and others.

[nysbirds-l] Sandhill Crane in St. Lawrence Co. & other observations

2010-05-03 Thread Joan E. Collins
5/3/10 Southeastern St. Lawrence Co. (Town of Colton)

Today, during a drive from Potsdam to Tupper Lake, at ~4:30 p.m., a Sandhill
Crane was observed flying over Route 56 (east to west). The location was
approx. 5 miles north of the Route 56-Route 3 intersection in the Town of
Colton. Very exciting! (Several years ago, a pair had been observed in
Tupper Lake - about 15 miles from today's sighting.)

I did not have a chance to search for the 2 birds singing Golden-winged
Warbler songs yesterday (5/2/10). I took our dogs out early this morning
for a walk and once again found 2 birds singing Golden-winged songs. I
chose to search for the one I didn't try for yesterday, and it led me deep
into WET brushy habitat. I was soaked to the knees with water and mud from
my wet bushwhack. Every time I caught up to the bird, it moved. After it
had led me a long way, it stopped singing. I imagined it laughing at me
from some hidden perch. I gave up the stubborn pursuit. Fortunately, the
other bird I tried to find yesterday was at the shrubland edge farther down
the trail. Unfortunately, it was a first generation male Brewster's
Warbler. I've observed Blue-winged Warblers move into, and increase in
number, in the area behind our Potsdam home during the past 5 years. It was
distressing to see this area transition so quickly from a Golden-winged
Warbler only area, to an area with Golden-winged and Blue-winged Warblers,
and now evidence of hybridization.

The only FOS species today was a singing Field Sparrow. It was attacked
twice by the Brewster's Warbler!

[nysbirds-l] Sandhill Crane - Dune Rd, East Quogue

2009-11-29 Thread Hans and Eileen Schwinn
While birding along Dune Road today (Sunday) at 4:20PM, I saw and
photographed a Sandhill Crane. The bird was seen standing just east
of the "Berm", which is east of Dockers Restaurant. It took off,
after a Great Blue Heron swooped past, and was last seen flying north-
east over the marshes of Shinnecock Bay. I tried to follow by car,
but was unable to relocated the bird.

[nysbirds-l] Sandhill Crane: a not so stealthy migrant?

2009-10-31 Thread Angus Wilson
How good is our coverage? Are we finding most of the rarities that
come into our area or are we just seeing the tip of the iceberg? These
are questions that every active birder will ask themselves now and
again.

There are no firm answers and maybe there never will be. To some
extent it must depend on the locations involved and the types of birds
you are looking for. Stumbling on a Connecticut Warbler on a vegetated
path it is hard to believe there aren't one or two more skulking
around in the undergrowth just out of sight. For sure, fewer birds
will escape knowledgeable eyes at sites were there are plenty of
birders and the cover is limited - the west end of Jones Beach or
Central Park to name two examples. Studies have show that rare birds
are more likely to be found at the weekend than during the work week
and some of the best places to find really rare birds are the most
barren. Personally, I'd wager that at most times and at most places,
we are missing more than we find. A related question is whether a
rarity that is seen in one place is likely to ever been seen again.
What happened to the Brooklyn Western Reef Heron once it said farewell
to its beloved Coney Island Creek? As far as I know there hasn't been
a single report of the species in continental North America since that
time. Where did the bird go?

The recent southward passage of five Sandhill Cranes that spent
several weeks near Wareham, Plymouth Co, Massachusetts, offers an
interesting example of how individual birds can sometimes be tracked
by field observers and speaks favorably to the depth of coverage by
birders along the mid-Atlantic coast. Last Thursday morning the cranes
vanished from the fields they'd been frequenting but because of their
distinctive number it is possible to identify sequential reports in
three additional states as far the Merrill Creek Reservoir in
northeastern New Jersey. Just over 240 miles. This is where the trail
goes cold, for now at least.

Here are the particulars:
(1) Near Wareham, Plymouth Co., MA (Thu 39 Oct 2009): last seen in the
fields around 9:30 AM (observer: Bob Conway)
(2) +25 miles - Portsmouth, Newport Co., RI (Thu 39 Oct 2009): Seen
later flying at an estimated 600 feet over Rt 24 from Fall River,
Bristol Co., MA to Portsmouth, RI (observer: Paul Champlin)
(3) +140 miles - Greenwich, Fairfield Co., CT (Thu 39 Oct 2009):
Passed over the Quaker Ridge Hawkwatch in the late afternoon
(observers: Brian O'Toole, Luke Tiller, Mike Warner & Stefan Martin)
(4) +80 miles - Merrill Creek Reservoir, Warren Co., NJ (Fri 30 Oct
2009): Five cranes spent morning in field by reservoir (observer: Tom
Vouglas)

So where are the birds now and how did they cross the Empire State
(Westerchester Co.) undetected? Did they go over us in dark or did
they spend the night somewhere in between Greenwich and Merrill Creek?
Food for though.
