Re: [nysbirds-l] Sunflower Valley Farm and Liberty Lane in Pine Island, NY are closed to birders.

2020-08-24 Thread AJIT ANTONY

Hi NY birders.
I run the Mearns Bird Club io website/ listserv which is open to all birders,
not only members of the Mearns Bird Club.

Years ago I created "Birding Sites in Orange County and Environs" for our club
members, which is on the Database section of the io website that casual
visitors to the site cannot access. It lists all the birding sites in Orange
County, with the species one can see there, in which season, with general links
as well as Google Map Links to them.
Members of the io group may edit and add to this file to refine its content.

If anyone is interested they may go to:
https://groups.io/g/MearnsBirdClub
and apply to join the group website, mentioning you saw this post.

Neither of the roads in question are gravel roads. They are dirt farm roads.

2020-08-23 Thread Felipe Pimentel
Hi Joshua,

You can try Skinner lane (sod farms) for migrating shorebirds in September.
The area that has been closed to birders in the one between R12 and the bridge
that cross the river. There are other “private roads” in the area of Pine
Island and Florida where birding is “tolerated” but don’t drive into the fields
where you find people working the agricultural fields.

Good luck,

Felipe

Re: [nysbirds-l] Sunflower Valley Farm and Liberty Lane in Pine Island, NY are closed to birders.

2020-08-23 Thread Joshua Malbin
Is there anyplace to find out where in the area it is acceptable to bird,
where it is not, where you need to ask permission and whom you need to ask,
etc.?

The simplest idea - and something that clearly should have been done a
while back - is to change the name of the hotspot to append either
"private" or "closed to birders"
