[old-chevy-truck] Re : Tail Lights

2013-07-18 Thread Nate

Well ;

Basically your original AD tail/stop lamp and these aftermarket 'A' Model ones
too , has two circuits so , to use them for turn signals , requires a six wire
turn signal switch to separate the brake lights from the turn signals .

Or , you can use separate lamps for the turn signals on the back , those cute
bed roll end lights work especially well for this when fitted with LED or
Halogen bulbs and recessed 1 or so so they'll light up very brightly even in
the direct sun light .

Go to the home page of this yahoo group and look in the various files and
photos , I imagine there's some info as this has been done many times over .

One thing I'll add. Quite a few vehicle manufacturers now have
separate turn signal (amber) and brake light (red) lamps. When adding
a trailer w/standard dual filament bulb stop/tail/turns (STT) to these
vehicles if they don't already have a trailer ready plug, an
electronic smart device is used in the vehicle wiring to

that theory but it may work. However, I have a feeling that its
designed for 12V systems only.

This was a big problem years ago when Toyotas and Datsuns etc.
needed to pull a trailer. When you hooked up a trailer with combined
stop/turn filaments to a vehicle with separate stop/turn bulbs, all
sorts of weird things occured. None of which were acceptable. The
units are commonly available and are called trailer light conversion
devices. They might work with a 6V system also especially if you have
a good charging system that keeps 7.5 volts while running. Probably
won't know until tested though. I had a 12V trailer brake controller
on my 6V truck and it worked fine until it got wet from a leaky
windshield. The controller (different model) I replaced it with did
not work with 6V.

Probably just easier to find a 6 wire turn signal switch that you

Mark, the older style add on t/s units with either three or four

At least I haven't been able to figure out a way. Theres no provision
inside the t/s switch to override the steady brake light current when
a turn signal is also on. There is also no separation between front
and rear turn signals. What happens when you hook it up like you think
it should work is all four corners of the truck light up (if you have
front turn sigs) when you step on the brake or turn on the signals
because both brake light filaments are tied together at the brake
light switch and the front and rear t/s circuits are not separated.
The later style switch with at least 6 wires solves that problem. The
schematic of the switch separates front/rear and left/right.

 Which switch do you have?

having two separate ones in the same housing is that when the brake

One other problem you might encounter is the wiring the turn signal

[old-chevy-truck] Re: Tail lights

2005-12-29 Thread vwnate1

You need a _good_ test light and a long bit of wire with two
alligator clips on it for testing , always ensure your test light is
properly grounded .

Most of the time either the bullet connectors (under the LR corner
of the bed , usually inside a rat's nest of old tape ) have come
unplugged or so corroded they're not passing current

Or the taillight bulb has gotten so nasty corroded in it's socket
it won't come on ~ use a dedicated battery brush (! NOT one used to
clean batteries !) to clean out the socket and then install a new
taillight bulb , smear some axle brease on the base of the bulb
_AFTER_ you've cleaned the socket to shiny clean to prevent
corrosion from returing .

DO NOT use Dialetric grease in light sockets ! .

There's not much to it , use the tester to ascertain current at the
back of the truck yes/no then either address the taillight or work
forward untill you find where the current stops , it is almost never
the switch itself .

Always use the chrome bumper to ground the test light , failing
that , use the long bit of wire for a ground lead , connect it to
the - (ground) post of the attery and trail it back to the taillight

I hope this helps .

Well I don't know the reference, but betcha you could get from your
Longview/Gregg Co. DPS. In Abilene, the DPS office is divided - one side is the
driver's license side, the other is the law enforcement (?) side. I entered
that side and fortunately for me they were very friendly and knowledgeable, and
the inspector/officer I mentioned previously pretty much flipped open a reg
book and found the section. I believe it was because I had asked a spcific

 Subject: [old-chevy-truck] Tail lights

I am in need of another tail light as one is missing on my truck.
Can a few of you suggest a place that offers high quality ones? I am
a bit leery of ordering from Chevy Duty after several comments I have
picked up on indicate that they do not always offer high quality
parts.

On that note, is there any one particular dealer that offers
superior service plus good quality parts. I'm open to suggestions as
I have no experience with any of the vendors and will likely be
needing some parts that I cannot find locally.

 Thanks guys.,

RE: [old-chevy-truck] Re: Tail lights

2005-01-19 Thread JONES, ALLEN

The thing to remember is that these laws vary from state to state. The
Feds promulgate the minimum standard and the States make their own laws
based on that (they are allowed to be more stringent but not less
restrictive as is the case with most law). Please refer to your own
state's laws, eg some states STILL don't allow blue dot tail lights (and
there are some very goofy ones out there).
