Re: SHIPPING IDEAS FOR HOOD
Hmmm, I don't think there is a good way. I think it is too big for Greyhound. The normal truck carriers will not take it unless its business to business I think. We tried this twice in the past 6 months and did not find a way, even at $300. If you find a carrier that will take it let us know I have some big parts in Nevada and Georgia that I'd like to see in Wisconsin. Kerry Doyle (68 442 Canadian Post / 468 SP)

Ebay 270069029710
Hello Ebay #270069029710 This is a decent 68 442 with lots of documentation. Looking at the pictures the cowl tag is a 34487 and matches the Vin. Many 442's have cowl tag #'s of 33487 like a cutlass vin. So were some 68 bodies built specific to be 442's and others are Cutlass bodies and the factory added 442, as an option? Were some 68s made with the chrome plastic backing plate behind the arm rests on the front doors as an option, or only for certian pacages? Or did the restorer miss that detail? That is a darn good question. Consider this list has exposed no less than a dozen of them to Ebay and it still goes on. Either Ebay has a very serious security problem or they are the problem or both. You would also think the scammers would realize after a dozen failed attempts what they do doesn't work.

Re: 455 rebuild Headers / manifolds
Some time ago I read an article on how to get the most GO POWER from the least money. Lost the article 2+ years ago. Sort of a junkyard parts street racer. >From memory, Basically it suggested a 68 455 block, "C" heads, 68 toro intake, Q-Jet, W30 cam, HC pistons,W-Z manifolds, Switch pitch 400 trans, 12 bolt 3:08-1 Posi. If I recall correctly they estimated the HP at 405. The Idea was to get better than stock performance with readily available junkyard parts at low prices. I have followed this pretty close, thus the WZ manifolds rather than headers. NO doubt headers will kick the HP up lots but then there is the associated cost for the HP. I think when the article was written one could put the complete drive line together for less than $500. Now a Q-Jet rebuild and set of WZ manifolds are $600+ Kerry (68 Canadian 442 Post Drive line complete waiting for BODY) --- "Matias L. Raniewicz" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Definitively. Hey Randy The dispute wouldn't be about getting overcharged more than double for many months would it? The dirty crooks have a way of jacking your $14.99 bill to $49.99 without notice. when you finally catch it they will drop it back to the $14.99 for the future but keep your money for the months you missed it on the bill. Chris If that is a Canada built car there is a complete record available from GM historic of Canada. Do you have any idea of the asking price? It has the "69" Garnet interior color which I have seen on other Canada built 68 442's. (I do not know if Garnet was available in 68 from the US plants or not, I have only noticed it on Canada built cars) Despite its ridiculously armature fender stripe job and incorrect configuration, the rest of the car is decent and impressive. Re: OT: thoughts on fuel economy
Karen makes a good point- its all about the gov getting money. Conservation and economy has little or no impact. Supply is not a real issue - tax is. Yes we consume more than the rest! But we (the US and Canada) produce many times more goods & service per barrel consumed. Gas is cheap here compared to the rest of the world and we use it wisely, we go to work and produce food, products, and the technology that drives the rest of the world. What more does one want from us? We are looking at more than four and a half trillion barrels of potentially recoverable oil. That number translates into 140 years of oil at current rates of consumption, or to put it anther way, the world has only consumed about 18 percent of its conventional oil potential. "That fact alone should discredit the argument that peak oil is imminent and put our minds at ease concerning future petrol supplies. "As we have seen, there is far more oil in the rest of the world than there is in Middle East. Re: Switch Pitch
Hello Ken I am in Sheboygan Falls Wisconsin. My project is a 68 442 Post car. http://s13.photobucket.com/albums/a274/Oneil442/442/ the motor and frame are done and assemnbled. I used the SP short tail TH400 behind a 455/468 cu in with HC pistons and a mild cam. http://s13.photobucket.com/albums/a274/Oneil442/468%20running/ Its a Canadian built car so it has a chev 12 bolt into which is installed a Eaton Posi. I have a bit of sheetmetal work to do next, then the body can be painted and put back on the frame. http://s13.photobucket.com/albums/a274/Oneil442/68%20442%20frame/?sc=3 I'm a bit slow now as I lost a job in June and am in the process of buying a small business (buy a job)so all my time and money and energy is going into that and not the car. I have never been to the Miller Olds meet in Norwalk, do you have a link to their page? Have a good day Kerry

Re: pinion retaining bolt?
I jerked one from my parts car and shipped it to him in Japan, CW is sending me a replacement. How cool is that to be in the service in Japan and have a 65 Cutty to drive!!! ya just got to love it! Kerry
Re: pinion retaining bolt?
Fred Got this from Jeff. I only kept the bottom half of the bolt (pinion shaft retaining bolt?), I don't know what I did with the top part with the head, probably chucked it across the garage :) Anyway, I sent a pic of half the bolt and a diagram in the olds book pointing to it. If you have one you can send it to: SSGT Jeff XX. Then what ever it costs I can send a check or ? to pay for it. I appreciate the help lots. I am trying to keep my Olds running over here in Japan and that in its self is a challenge, but the Internet helps out enormously as well as the olds digest. Jeff http://s13.photobucket.com/albums/a274/Oneil442/Bolt/?sc=1&addtype=local Here are the pictures he sent me. Re: 65 Cutlass AXLES
Unbolt the retainers on the ends of the housing. Get an axle puller (Auto Zone will loan one to you) and jerk out the axles. Clean the axles, press off the old bearings and retainers and press on the new bearings and retainers. Next remove the old axle seals and replace them with new ones. You will need a seal puller or a slide hammer with an attachment. The seals are pressed in the end of the axle housing. The best way to press them back in is to find a socket that is rhe right diameter and hammer them back into the axle tubes. Put everything back together and drive off

Re: Switch Pitch
Sure I'll bite I think in a stock car it was tripped by a switch on the accelerator linkage at WOT. That caused the TC to switch to high stall which effectively reduces the gear ratio between the motor and trans. So in the stock car its simply a passing gear or under-drive. In a non stock car it can be controlled by a manual toggle switch on the dash. When flipped it changes from high stall (2200 RPM) to low stall (1100) RPM. Or flipped back the other way. Stall settings can be custom built for not much money by PAE. One can switch into high stall for a launch and then switch to low stall during first gear. sort of gives you a four speed. If the pitch change is 50% it effectively cuts your gear ratio in half (numerically double). So if you are running 3.08-1 gears you are launching in high stall with 6.16-1. Or if you use the cutlass 2.56 you get great mileage in low stall but can launch with a 5.12-1 effective ratio. Behind a 455 one can turn some really big tires. I am sure there are plenty folks on the list who can tell you much more than I. To me it seems nuts to build a TH400 without SP. If you are not 100% content with the car, you will ship it back on my expense to get your deposit back.
