[HEADS UP][UPDATE SERVICE] OOo 3.3 update service "first phase" will be active today at 10:00 (GMT+2)

2012-06-05 Thread Oliver-Rainer Wittmann

Hi,

just for your interest.

I will activate the OOo 3.3 update service "first phase" today at 10:00 (GMT+2).
In the "first phase" Italian OOo 3.3 instances on Windows, MacOS X, Linux 32bit
and Linux 64bit will be notified through the update functionality that AOO 3.4
is available. The users will be directed to the Italian download page [1].

We want to run the first phase until Friday, 2012-06-08, in order to check, if
the generated download traffic can be handled.
Afterwards, it is planned to activate the OOo 3.3 update service for all
platform and language combinations for which we have an AOO 3.4 installation
package available.

Best regards, Oliver.

I started testing OpenOffice.org 3.2, and the application told me that
there was an update available.
The browser opened the following page:
http://update.services.openoffice.org/ooo/index_it.html?cid=920897
that actually doesn't work.

So I did disinstall OOo 3.2 and the browser pointed to the following
page: http://surveys.services.openoffice.org/deinstall that actually
doesn't work.
After installing OOo 3.3 the application didn't check automatically,
not even after I set the daily check for updates
Then I did check it and I've been redirected to
http://www.openoffice.org/it/download/?utm_source=OOo3_3&utm_medium=Client&utm_campaign=Upgrade
as expected, and I eventually downloaded the AOO 3.4 file.

Guess we need to double check what's going on with OOo 3.2, I didn't
expect it to say there are updates, though.

I had a clean Italian OOo 3.3 installation on a Windows 7 machine.
After I had turned on the daily update check and after a restart it takes 2-3
minutes until OOo 3.3 reports that an AOO 3.4 update is available.

If you still have your OOo 3.3 installed, you may check again tomorrow, if the
update check is performed automatically.
In advance you can have a look at Menu Tools - Options - Online Update. You can
find here the date and time of the last successful update check.

Then I did check it and I've been redirected to

Sounds good.

I took a quick look at the Google Analytics numbers. Italy is showing
up as the top download country, more than Germany. It is hard to
speak about comparative numbers, since we only have full-day counts
for SF downloads, and this update process started mid day. But in a
few days we should have a good sense.

One thing I did look at was the "conversion" rate for the updates.
This, from the GA perspective:

# of Users who downloaded OpenOffice / # of users who followed the
link to the upgrade.

I don't know how many people were show the upgrade dialog. I only
know how many clicked that link, and then what % of them downloaded.

So by that definition, the conversion rate is 59%. But what is odd is
the breakdown by operating system:

Windows 66%
Mac 30%
Linux 63%

So something seems odd about the low conversion rate for Mac users.
Could someone check to the Italian website to make sure we're not
saying something confusing or incorrect about the Mac port?

This is in agreement with the tests volunteers did so far.

About 3.2, indeed it seems that the relevant hostnames are still
inactive as expected, so I can't explain the problem Roberto reported.
But I don't have a versionrc file available for inspection.

I read this as "out of 100 Windows users, 66 download the new version"
and so on right? So the "oddity" would be that only 30 out of 100 Mac
users actually initiate the download.

The texts haven't changed and there isn't anything specific about the
Mac version (we merely specify it's for Intel architecture, but this has
been there for years too). Moreover, versions are listed on the right
hand side of http://www.openoffice.org/it/download/ too in case
autodetect fails and the user cannot realize that the "Other platforms"
link is what he needs.

  Andrea.

What you have experienced with your OOo 3.2 installation is really unexpected.

I have a clean OOo 3.2 installation on my Windows 7 machine. Its UpdateURL is
http://update34.services.openoffice.org/ProductUpdateService/check.Update which
currently can not be resolved to any existing HTTP resource. Thus, my OOo 3.2
installation reports that the update check fails.
Thus, I have no glue, why your OOo 3.2 installation could report an available
update.
I do not assume that you have a backup of your OOo 3.2 installation. If you have
it nevertheless, please share the "version.ini" resp. "versionrc" file, found in
the program folder of this installation, with me.

Best regards, Oliver.

Olivier you're right, I don't have a backup of that installation, and
actually I just erased that and moved to OOo 3.3 to test the AOO 3.4
auto-update. Maybe someone else can test it and report here?
