Re: [Oorexx-devel] odd behaviour
The development version ooRexx 5.0 will not link on RHEL 6 or CentOS 6 (or anything earlier) due to a linker bug in those releases. This also includes some Ubuntu releases. That is why they are not being built by the nightly build process. Re: [Oorexx-devel] Bogus dependency error for Build 10881 x86_64 and OpenSuSE 13.1
The new CMake build environment does a much better job of analyzing the code that is being placed in RPM files. One of the helper scripts that we have supplied from the very beginning is one designed to start the Rexx interpreter via a C-shell script. CMake sees that script and creates a dependency in the RPM for the csh.rpm file. We are still debating on what to do about this. In the meantime you will need to install the csh.rpm file prior to installing ooRexx 5.0 builds. David Ashley On 01/30/2015 01:47 PM, J. Re: [Oorexx-devel] OOREXX on z/OS
At this point I think we need help in the install/uninstall and test areas for Zseries. Anything you can do in these areas would be helpful. When you find problems just open up bug reports. No problems so far. Then I tried to compile ooRexx just to see what would happen. I had made no changes to the CMakeListing.txt file. I got a few warnings and then hit an error. [Oorexx-devel] PDcurses and orxncurses on Windows
Rick, I guess this is mostly for you. I need advice. PDCurses is a public domain version of the curses library (and I do mean Public Domain). The source code is without any license and freely available on SourceForge and other repositories. It is portable to Windows and should compile easily on that platform. I want to include the PDCurses source into the orxncurses library for Windows. This will give the Windows environment the same functionality as the *nix environment without the need for the Windows user to install any other support libraries. I think this is the same situation as the ooSQLite library, but I would like to be sure. The ooSQLite library provides a readme that explains the mixed qualities of the source. I will do the same for PDCurses. Let me know if you think this will work. If it will, I have some followup questions about how to organize the code for you. Re: [Oorexx-devel] ooRexx 5.0.0 Support For Older Operating Systems
These are not automation issues. These are pure build issues. First, there is a problem with CMake. You can not just ask your distribution to install CMake and be ready to go. The version of CMake that gets installed may be too old. That means that now you have to remove the version of CMake you just installed and download/build CMake from the current source. Most of our users/developers will be VERY reluctant to perform that operation. So we have a fundamental problem with most older Linux distributions. Second, it is not the the older linkers will not link the ooRexx code, it is that there is a known bug in those older versions. And again, the user is stuck with correcting the problem with a procedure they will be VERY uncomfortable with and that is not portable between RPM and DEB distributions (and it could be worse than that in some cases). We always want the user to have the option of building ooRexx from source. But if the build procedure is too hard then the user will just not choose ooRexx at all. That is one thing we really do not want. How about Do index, item supplier .someclass~methods with "supplier" being a subkeyword. That makes it very clear what is happening. [Oorexx-devel] ooRexx 5.0.0 Support For Older Operating Systems
All - Please read all of this note as this could impact you. For the last few days I have been trying to get the 5.0.0 version of ooRexx to build on my older VMs on the Build Machine. I keep running into one of the following problems. 1. We use a lot of the newer features in CMake and these older operating systems only have an older version of CMake available. 2. The GCC compiler/linker will not link the compiler output due to a bug in the linker. Before I talk about these problem I want explain our philosophy on building ooRexx. We supply many install packages for ooRexx for two reasons: to verify that ooRexx will build on an OS release and to ensure that ooRexx will install on an OS. We therefore try to impose as few problems on the developer who wants to build ooRexx on their own. Starting with version 5.0.0 we have added a new wrinkle into building ooRexx with the CMake product. While CMake is not usually installed by default it is easily added using the OS specific installer or for Windows, downloading it off the web. So now lets get back to our two problems. Problem 1 is not easy to solve for a developer. It usually means that they will need to download the latest CMake source and build it for themselves, which is not an easy task. That also means that I will have to perform that task for each of our older operating systems (VMs). There are over 25 of these so this task will take a LOT of time. Problem 2 is even worse. There is really no good solution for this. The problem is caused by our choice to use newer C++ features to increase the performance and ease of developing the interpreter. The only solution would be to try and integrate a newer version of GCC into an OS that may not be able to support it (no fun at all). For these reasons we will not be supporting ooRexx 5.0.0 on any of the OSs that have problems 1 or 2. I know this is disappointing but please try to be reassured that as time progresses this will become less of a problem. Those using the older OSs will still be able to fall back on ooRexx 4.2.0 (which is a really good version of ooRexx). Currently we are going to only support the OS versions that are showing up on the nightly builds (plus some others that may be added later). If you have questions about this topic please feel free to post a reply to this post. That is correct. You must compile from source to get binaries you can use. Then you can adjust your PATH to point to them. If you can not compile the binaries then you are stuck installing an RPM/DEB. David Ashley On Tue, 2014-10-07 at 10:26 -0500, J. [Oorexx-devel] General Test Question
I was looking at my ooRexx ncurses implementation and I am wondering about how to supply mt tests for the package. Including them in the ooRexx test environment really does not work because the tests do things like mover the cursor around the screen, draw lines, and other weird stuff that is screen oriented. There is no way to know whether or not a test is successful unless you observer what is happening to the screen. So obviously putting such test in our test environment does not really work. So do I supply a test package or not? And if so, how? Any suggestions are welcome. While I am for the use of C++11 there could be a problem with some of our older *nix platforms. Their compilers may not support those features. Yes, the contents are as intended. The tar.gz file contains the Linux/*nix files to build ooRexx. The .zip file contains the Windows source files. We do this so that you don't get files you do not need to build ooRexx on your platform. Re: [Oorexx-devel] More square brackets
I want to stick my thumb in the pie on this topic. I think we need to be very careful of how much syntactic sugar we add to the language. Otherwise we might end up being like Perl with eight different ways of coding everything. I like Rexx/ooRexx because the language is consistent and easy to read/debug. The more syntactic sugar you add, the harder it is to read and you end up having to look up things you do not understand or have not encountered thus slowing your productivity. And the idea of double brackets - YUK! Reminds me of Lisp which IMHO is the least user friendly language I have ever encountered. Bottom line, syntactic sugar should only be added when it clearly enhances productivity or makes the code easier to read. If you do not have Publican installed on your workstation then you need to install that first. If you do not build the ooRexx docs then just ignore all this. 1. Use Subversion to check out the docs/trunk/oorexx tree. 2. cd to the oorexx subdir. 3. Just cd to the oorexx subdirectory and run make make install On *nix the "make install" will need to be run from the root account. These commands work on both Windows and *nix. Re: [Oorexx-devel] Rexxref Syntax Diagrams
Actually, the text scaling issue is more due to the sizing of the images in the xml. The xlm text is scaling the images to 50%. If I do not specify the scale factor it uses 100% which causes a loss of precision in the text and lines and images that run off the right side of the page in the pdf. 50% seemed like a good compromise but reducing it further might make the text and lines look better in the pdf but might cause problems in the html rendering. We might have to experiment to see what is better. David Ashley On Wed, 2014-07-30 at 15:15 -0400, Rick McGuire wrote: > Ok, that makes me feel better. The syntax files can be either .svg or .png (I chose .png for the rexxref example). This web site is used by many open source project to produce their syntax diagrams and is itself an open source project. The Jason project uses this for all their syntax diagrams. There are a number of others that use it as well. We could always bring up our own version of the web site if needed. Re: [Oorexx-devel] Rexxref Syntax Diagrams
The color is completely customizable. The font is not. Basically you feed the ebnf you want into the web site and out pops the diagram(s). I created a single file of all the BIFs and fed it into the web site, taking all the defaults for color. You then download the diagram(s) and use them as you please. Maintenance should be pretty easy. [Oorexx-devel] New s390x VMs for Building ooRexx
All - Dave Jones of V/Soft Software has been kind enough to provide us with s390 Virtual Machines to build ooRexx under Red Hat 7.0 and SLES 11.3. The builds are done daily at night and are available on the ooRexx Build Machine (http://build.oorexx.org/). Many thanks to Dave for the work done to set up each of these VMs to our requirements. Re: [Oorexx-devel] MacOSX support
We are pretty loose about repository access. But there are some rules you should know about. 1. Once a set of files has been copied to a release subdirectory please do not modify those files. 2. the trunk and branches are always available for updates. 3. Stay out of other peoples sandbox subdirectories unless you have arranged otherwise with the sandbox owner. 4. If a file is strictly for a specific platform then we like to put those in a subdirectory like platform/unix for example. I thnk most of the Mac stuff has usually been merged into the unix files but if something is specific to only the Mac then by all meas create a platform/mac (or other name) subdirectory to hold it. Right now I handle most of the *nix development. Mark handles a lot of the Windows stuff (especially ooDialog), and Rick does most of the platform independent work. But there are exceptions so ask if you are not sure about features you want to work on. Rick and Mark may have other comments on this. [Oorexx-devel] pSeries Access for ooRexx from IBM
All - I have been in discussions with IBM about providing two Linux pSeries VMs for the ooRexx project through their PartnerWorld program. One VM would run RHEL 7.0 and the other SLES 11.3. I have not gone public with these discussions until now because I figured that it would probably not work out. But now we have come to a point where I need feedback from the project team because it looks like we really can get access to these VMs. The sticky point is that the access would be a limited time access but with the possibility of subsequently renewing that access multiple times. That means that when the access runs out we could reactivate it when we needed it again in the future for the same period. I think that this arrangement would be acceptable but I want confirmation from the team before I proceed. We can get a 30 day access period with no trouble at all. Longer periods, up to 180 days, will be more work (mostly on IBM's part) but is still doable. This access would allow us to be able to break into the pSeries market with no monetary outlay. We could do periodic builds and testing on these VMs with very little work on our part. So what does everyone think about this? We also need a way to determine which ::Data directive we are working with should there be multiple directives in the package. Re: [Oorexx-devel] Suspect executables not getting built correctly ...
Another suggestion. If we have to implement an end-of-data marker we should let the programmer define that marker as a required option on the directive statement. That way the language does not define something that will conflict with the user's data. We make it the responsibility of the programmer to make sure that the marker is unique. Re: [Oorexx-devel] Discuss: Embedding data into an ooRexx program.
Sorry, I was out of pocket most of the weekend so I did not see this until today. I have also wanted/requested this feature for some time. It seems only natural that in an object oriented language that data and program be held together in a single entity (an ooRexx program or class file). One suggestion I have is that when parsed, the end of the data should be either the end of the source file or another directive statement. If you don't do it this way the programmer will always be mis-coding it because all other directives work in this manner. And no other directive has a special END statement/directive. I would be happy if the data was returned as an array of strings. Rick's Other return types would also be useful but are not really necessary to me, but might be to others. There is another feature that would be useful to me for this. It would be nice if there was a substitution mechanism for the data itself i.e. special variables in the data that could be replaced with data specified by the programmer. Perl uses this concept with the "$var" and the old Net.Data product used the "$(var)" sequence. An ooRexx directory class instance could be used as the variable/replacement text. But this is something a user could code as well so maybe we should not put this in. Just thinking out loud here. Nope. The file manifest is actually in the rpm spec file and the deb manifest file. The magic happens there. Rick - I have to be perfectly honest here. I do not see these updates as necessary to the old build. As long as the code is up-to-date, I am not fired up to make the to builds match entirely. Especially since the old builds will be targeted mostly toward older distributions that will be going out of support in the future. I also want to say that I find the CMake system to be very flexible and, after a little education, easy to work with. And highly system independent. [Oorexx-devel] Build Machine Status
All - I have converted about 30% of the VMs on the Build Machine to use the new CMake build system we have been working on. Unfortunately. we will not be able to convert much more than that because a lot of the older VMs do not have an up-to-date CMake version and can not build ooRexx successfully. So we will have to maintain the old autotools build for those environments until we phase them out. But all new VMS will be set up to use the CMake build system if at all possible. Also, I have added and removed some of the VMs. RHEL 6.0 - removed, no longer supported by Red Hat RHEL 7.0 - added Mint 17 - added Mint 13 - removed David Ashley -- HPCC Systems Open Source Big Data Platform from LexisNexis Risk Solutions Find What Matters Most in Your Big Data with HPCC Systems Open Source. Re: [Oorexx-devel] Future CPU Architecture Decisions
The bottom line is that any library or application that is 32 bit only would not be usable in a 64 bit operating system. Perhaps the most obvious library is the IBM DB2 Rexx libraries. These are 32 bit only (no 64 bit libraries exist) and would not work on a 64 bit OS, no matter what version of ooRexx you would use with it. A replacement library would need to be found. Maybe this is also a good point to address Windows. At this point Microsoft has not announced anything about dropping support for 32 bit libraries/apps. So I think that we can safely assume Microsoft will continue to support 32 bit apps and libraries since the number of 32 bit only apps is still very large. Indeed, IMHO Microsoft may never be able to give up 32 bit support entirely. They are between their OS rock and their user apps hard place.
