Do we need the directory 'publish' in svn ? Seems to be a generated

it does crap out when it compiles. It is just that the message is not
very informative.

Re: [Oorexx-devel] odd behaviour

2015-02-10 Thread David Ashley
The development version ooRexx 5.0 will not link on RHEL 6 or CentOS 6
(or anything earlier) due to a linker bug in those releases. This also
includes some Ubuntu releases. That is why they are not being built by
the nightly build process.

Re: [Oorexx-devel] Bogus dependency error for Build 10881 x86_64 and OpenSuSE 13.1

2015-02-02 Thread David Ashley
The new CMake build environment does a much better job of analyzing the
code that is being placed in RPM files. One of the helper scripts that
we have supplied from the very beginning is one designed to start the
Rexx interpreter via a C-shell script. CMake sees that script and
creates a dependency in the RPM for the csh.rpm file. We are still
debating on what to do about this.

In the meantime you will need to install the csh.rpm file prior to
installing ooRexx 5.0 builds.

Rene -

In order to get commit rights you first need an account on SourceForge.
Then Rick and I can evaluate your commit privileges. We need to do that
because the commit privilege is all or nothing with the repository. Rick
and I need to make sure everyone understands how the repository is

[Oorexx-devel] Mac OSX build and rxsock6 library

2014-12-07 Thread David Ashley
Killed two birds with one stone (or several svn updates).

The rxsock6 library now compiles cleanly on all platforms (including Mac
OSX and Windows). It is not yet debugged but I will get to that next week.

I have ooRexx compiling on the MAC OSX 10.10.1 (Yosemite) without
errors. I still have to create the install file in CMake yet, but that
should not be too difficult.

[Oorexx-devel] ooRexx Compiled on Mac 10.10.1

2014-12-06 Thread David Ashley
I got my used Mac Mini last Friday. It was pretty easy to set up. I
updated it to OSX 10.10.1 and then install the Xcode application tools.
I got ooRexx checked out via svn and then installed CMake. No problems
so far.

Then I tried to compile ooRexx just to see what would happen. I had made
no changes to the CMakeListing.txt file. I got a few warnings and then
hit an error. I think this is a size mismatch between int and a pointer.

I put the errors.txt file on the build server in the status subdirectory.

I will start to address the necessary changes to the CMakeListing.txt
file a little later.

[Oorexx-devel] ooRexx Mac Users/Developers

2014-11-07 Thread David Ashley
I may be able to obtain an older Mac Mini (the one just older than the
just introduced version). Would someone who has experience building
ooRexx on a Mac be willing to help me set up my new machine so that I
can build ooRexx on it? I have absolutely no experience on a mac and do
not even know the first thing about one, starting from scratch.

[Oorexx-devel] First Automated Test Suite Results

2014-11-05 Thread David Ashley

The first automated ooRexx test suite results are available. A
Fedora20-x86_64 VM was used to generate the results. This VM will be
used nightly to create new results. The results are placed in the same
folder as the RPM install file on which the test is based (usually the
same as the nightly build).

I will work on getting automated test suite results for Win7-x86_64
next.

[Oorexx-devel] ooRexx Test Suite Results on the Build Machine

2014-11-04 Thread David Ashley
All -

I am working on getting the Test Suite executed on a nightly basis on
the Build Machine. Currently there is a problem with rexxutil that
prevents this from happening. Hopefully we will get that worked out soon
and the results will begin to show up on a daily basis.

Currently I am planning on just executing the tests in two environments:

Win7-x86_64
Fedora20-x86_64

The test results will show up in the same folder as the exe/rpm. For
example interpreter-main/win7-x86_64/testresults.txt.

Hopefully this will ease the test burden on all of us.

[Oorexx-devel] PDcurses and orxncurses on Windows

2014-10-14 Thread David Ashley
Rick, I guess this is mostly for you. I need advice.

PDCurses is a public domain version of the curses library (and I do mean
Public Domain). The source code is without any license and freely
available on SourceForge and other repositories. It is portable to
Windows and should compile easily on that platform.

I want to include the PDCurses source into the orxncurses library for
Windows. This will give the Windows environment the same functionality
as the *nix environment without the need for the Windows user to install
any other support libraries.

I think this is the same situation as the ooSQLite library, but I would
like to be sure. The ooSQLite library provides a readme that explains
the mixed qualities of the source. I will do the same for PDCurses.

Let me know if you think this will work. If it will, I have some
followup questions about how to organize the code for you.

Re: [Oorexx-devel] ooRexx 5.0.0 Support For Older Operating Systems

2014-10-13 Thread David Ashley
These are not automation issues. These are pure build issues.

First, there is a problem with CMake. You can not just ask your
distribution to install CMake and be ready to go. The version of CMake
that gets installed may be too old. That means that now you have to
remove the version of CMake you just installed and download/build CMake
from the current source. Most of our users/developers will be VERY
reluctant to perform that operation. So we have a fundamental problem
with most older Linux distributions.

Second, it is not the the older linkers will not link the ooRexx code,
it is that there is a known bug in those older versions. And again, the
user is stuck with correcting the problem with a procedure they will be
VERY uncomfortable with and that is not portable between RPM and DEB
distributions (and it could be worse than that in some cases).

We always want the user to have the option of building ooRexx from
source. But if the build procedure is too hard then the user will just
not choose ooRexx at all. That is one thing we really do not want.

[Oorexx-devel] ooRexx 5.0.0 Support For Older Operating Systems

2014-10-10 Thread David Ashley
All -

Please read all of this note as this could impact you.

For the last few days I have been trying to get the 5.0.0 version of
ooRexx to build on my older VMs on the Build Machine. I keep running
into one of the following problems.

1. We use a lot of the newer features in CMake and these older operating
systems only have an older version of CMake available.

2. The GCC compiler/linker will not link the compiler output due to a
bug in the linker.

Before I talk about these problem I want explain our philosophy on
building ooRexx. We supply many install packages for ooRexx for two
reasons: to verify that ooRexx will build on an OS release and to ensure
that ooRexx will install on an OS. We therefore try to impose as few
problems on the developer who wants to build ooRexx on their own.

Starting with version 5.0.0 we have added a new wrinkle into building
ooRexx with the CMake product. While CMake is not usually installed by
default it is easily added using the OS specific installer or for
Windows, downloading it off the web.

So now lets get back to our two problems.

Problem 1 is not easy to solve for a developer. It usually means that
they will need to download the latest CMake source and build it for
themselves, which is not an easy task. That also means that I will have
to perform that task for each of our older operating systems (VMs).
There are over 25 of these so this task will take a LOT of time.

Problem 2 is even worse. There is really no good solution for this. The
problem is caused by our choice to use newer C++ features to increase
the performance and ease of developing the interpreter. The only
solution would be to try and integrate a newer version of GCC into an OS
that may not be able to support it (no fun at all).

For these reasons we will not be supporting ooRexx 5.0.0 on any of the
OSs that have problems 1 or 2. I know this is disappointing but please
try to be reassured that as time progresses this will become less of a
problem. Those using the older OSs will still be able to fall back on
ooRexx 4.2.0 (which is a really good version of ooRexx).

Currently we are going to only support the OS versions that are showing
up on the nightly builds (plus some others that may be added later).

If you have questions about this topic please feel free to post a reply
to this post.

David Ashley

Re: [Oorexx-devel] SVN snapshot question

2014-10-09 Thread David Ashley
You are downloading the whole repository with the snapshot. It is much
easier to just check out the part of the tree you want.

[Oorexx-devel] Windows Builds on the Build Machine

2014-10-08 Thread David Ashley
All -

The Windows builds of ooRexx have now been completely revised for CMake
and automated on the Build Machine. The use of Cygwin on the Windows VM
has been eliminated and I am now using a single VM to produce the 32 and
64 bit builds.

If anyone has problems with these builds please let me know.

That is correct. You must compile from source to get binaries you can
use. Then you can adjust your PATH to point to them. If you can not
compile the binaries then you are stuck installing an RPM/DEB.

[Oorexx-devel] General Test Question

2014-10-07 Thread David Ashley
I was looking at my ooRexx ncurses implementation and I am wondering
about how to supply mt tests for the package. Including them in the
ooRexx test environment really does not work because the tests do things
like mover the cursor around the screen, draw lines, and other weird
stuff that is screen oriented. There is no way to know whether or not a
test is successful unless you observer what is happening to the screen.

So obviously putting such test in our test environment does not really
work. So do I supply a test package or not? And if so, how?

Any suggestions are welcome.

Well, not exactly true. I was planning on getting the ncurses support
into the rpm and deb installs. The GTK support will come as a standalone
package but it will be in the form of an rpm or deb package.

If rxapid is still compatible then you should be able to switch by

There is definitely no way to have multiple versions of ooRexx installed

I am getting a error on compiling winmsgtb.rc this morning. It seems to
have an undefined keyword or key name, maybe on line 57? The RPM and DEB

[Oorexx-devel] Windows Build Environment Problem

2014-10-01 Thread David Ashley
Rick -

This is a strange one. When I run my script(s) that perform the cmake
build in the foreground I have no problems. But when I run them through
an ssh session I get an error from CMake almost right away. Right after
it discovers the Windows compiler it tries to CD to \cygwin\home\dashley
\cmake\CMakeFiles\CMakeTmp in order to do a test compile. The CD command
fails but does not give any indication why. I checked to make sure the
subdir exists and it does.

Any idea why this would be different?

[Oorexx-devel] Win CMake Build Problem

2014-09-28 Thread David Ashley
Rick -

I figured out the root cause why the "nmake nsis_template_installer"
command is not running. During the CMake configuration cmake can not
find the NSIS binary (makensis). I have tried everything I can think of
to get cmake to recognize my NSIS installation, but no joy. Here are
just some of the things I have tried:

- adding NSIS to the PATH
- adding a HINT to the find_program command

What magic are you using?

Re: [Oorexx-devel] When should we consider using C++11 features?

2014-09-23 Thread David Ashley
While I am for the use of C++11 there could be a problem with some of
our older *nix platforms. Their compilers may not support those
features. Also, I am not sure if the version of the Windows compiler
that we use supports the use of those features (Rick would know more
know more about this than I do).

At this point it really looks like we will need to start with a clean
slate as far as platforms we support with the ooRexx 5.0 version.

What files seem to be missing? Platform specific features are defined
via the build itself through several different means. But the Mac, Linux
and AIX builds are all sourced from that tar file. Oh, the AIX build
does have some missing build files due to some not under our control,
but that is the only platform that is specific in that way.

Re: [Oorexx-devel] ooRexx-4.2.0-source.tar.gz file on SourceForge

2014-09-22 Thread David Ashley
Yes, the contents are as intended. The tar.gz file contains the
Linux/*nix files to build ooRexx. The .zip file contains the Windows
source files. We do this so that you don't get files you do not need to
build ooRexx on your platform.

Re: [Oorexx-devel] More square brackets

2014-09-18 Thread David Ashley
I want to stick my thumb in the pie on this topic.

I think we need to be very careful of how much syntactic sugar we add to
the language. Otherwise we might end up being like Perl with eight
different ways of coding everything. I like Rexx/ooRexx because the
language is consistent and easy to read/debug. The more syntactic sugar
you add, the harder it is to read and you end up having to look up
things you do not understand or have not encountered thus slowing your
productivity.

And the idea of double brackets - YUK! Reminds me of Lisp which IMHO is
the least user friendly language I have ever encountered.

Bottom line, syntactic sugar should only be added when it clearly
enhances productivity or makes the code easier to read.

If you are making changes to the docs/trunk tree then there is a build

2014-08-08 Thread David Ashley
If you do not have Publican installed on your workstation then you need
to install that first. If you do not build the ooRexx docs then just
ignore all this.

1. Use Subversion to check out the docs/trunk/oorexx tree.
2. cd to the oorexx subdir.
3. Run the following on Linux

make
make install

  On Windows run

nmake
nmake install

That will update the ooRexx Brand (common code) on your machine.

Just cd to the oorexx subdirectory and run

make
make install

On *nix the "make install" will need to be run from the root account.

These commands work on both Windows and *nix.

All -

If you are producing the ooRexx docs this is an FYI that the ooRexx
Brand code has been updated. To get the latest brand code do an svn
check out of the docs/trunk/oorexx subdirectory. Next you need to "make"
the code and then install it.

If you do not perform this update then you will be missing some new text
and images in the Notices appendix. But it will not break you docs.

[Oorexx-devel] ooRexx Syntax Diagrams in Rexxref

2014-07-31 Thread David Ashley
I built a new rexxref.pdf and this time I used the SVG version of the
diagrams instead of the PNG versions. I also changed the color to gray.

I must say the diagrams look much sharper and they also do not leap out
at you as much.

Again, only the built in functions have been converted so far. The new
pdf is at http://build.oorexx.org/builds/release-candidates/

Please let me know what you think.

Re: [Oorexx-devel] Rexxref Syntax Diagrams

2014-07-30 Thread David Ashley
Actually, the text scaling issue is more due to the sizing of the images
in the xml. The xlm text is scaling the images to 50%. If I do not
specify the scale factor it uses 100% which causes a loss of precision
in the text and lines and images that run off the right side of the page
in the pdf. 50% seemed like a good compromise but reducing it further
might make the text and lines look better in the pdf but might cause
problems in the html rendering. We might have to experiment to see what
is better.

Re: [Oorexx-devel] Rexxref Syntax Diagrams

2014-07-30 Thread David Ashley
The syntax files can be either .svg or .png (I chose .png for the
rexxref example). This web site is used by many open source project to
produce their syntax diagrams and is itself an open source project. The
Jason project uses this for all their syntax diagrams. There are a
number of others that use it as well.

We could always bring up our own version of the web site if needed.

Re: [Oorexx-devel] Rexxref Syntax Diagrams

2014-07-30 Thread David Ashley
The color is completely customizable. The font is not.

Basically you feed the ebnf you want into the web site and out pops the
diagram(s). I created a single file of all the BIFs and fed it into the
web site, taking all the defaults for color. You then download the
diagram(s) and use them as you please. Maintenance should be pretty
easy.

I build a test copy of rexxref.pdf so you can see how the new railroad
syntax diagrams look. The builtin function chapter is the only one I
have worked on up to this point. The pdf is available from

[Oorexx-devel] New s390x VMs for Building ooRexx

2014-07-20 Thread David Ashley
All -

Dave Jones of V/Soft Software has been kind enough to provide us with
s390 Virtual Machines to build ooRexx under Red Hat 7.0 and SLES 11.3.
The builds are done daily at night and are available on the ooRexx Build
Machine (http://build.oorexx.org/).

Many thanks to Dave for the work done to set up each of these VMs to our
requirements. The builds are now automated and should appear on the
Build Machine on a daily basis going forward.

Re: [Oorexx-devel] MacOSX support

2014-07-09 Thread David Ashley
We are pretty loose about repository access. But there are some rules
you should know about.

1. Once a set of files has been copied to a release subdirectory please
do not modify those files.
2. the trunk and branches are always available for updates.
3. Stay out of other peoples sandbox subdirectories unless you have
arranged otherwise with the sandbox owner.
4. If a file is strictly for a specific platform then we like to put
those in a subdirectory like platform/unix for example. I thnk most of
the Mac stuff has usually been merged into the unix files but if
something is specific to only the Mac then by all meas create a
platform/mac (or other name) subdirectory to hold it.

Right now I handle most of the *nix development. Mark handles a lot of
the Windows stuff (especially ooDialog), and Rick does most of the
platform independent work. But there are exceptions so ask if you are
not sure about features you want to work on.

Rick and Mark may have other comments on this.

[Oorexx-devel] pSeries Access for ooRexx from IBM

2014-07-09 Thread David Ashley
All -

I have been in discussions with IBM about providing two Linux pSeries
VMs for the ooRexx project through their PartnerWorld program. One VM
would run RHEL 7.0 and the other SLES 11.3. I have not gone public with
these discussions until now because I figured that it would probably not
work out. But now we have come to a point where I need feedback from the
project team because it looks like we really can get access to these
VMs.

The sticky point is that the access would be a limited time access but
with the possibility of subsequently renewing that access multiple
times. That means that when the access runs out we could reactivate it
when we needed it again in the future for the same period.

I think that this arrangement would be acceptable but I want
confirmation from the team before I proceed. We can get a 30 day access
period with no trouble at all. Longer periods, up to 180 days, will be
more work (mostly on IBM's part) but is still doable.

This access would allow us to be able to break into the pSeries market
with no monetary outlay. We could do periodic builds and testing on
these VMs with very little work on our part.

So what does everyone think about this?

[Oorexx-devel] Weird result

2014-07-08 Thread David Ashley
Rick -

I was doing some work on my laptop which is running a 4.3 build of
ooRexx (built with CMake). I found a weird result and wondered if the
same think is happening on Windows. Here is the problem.

dashley@dhcp-9-41-90-229 ~$ rexxtry.rex
REXX-ooRexx_4.3.0(MT)_64-bit 6.04 17 Jun 2014
rexxtry.rex lets you interactively try REXX statements.
Each string is executed when you hit Enter.
Enter 'call tell' for a description of the features.
Go on - try a few...Enter 'exit' to end.
say userid()
unknown
  ... rexxtry.rex on Linux
exit

As you can see the BIF userid() id giving an 'unknown' value instead og
the user's name. Is this happening on Windows?

[Oorexx-devel] ooRexx Windows Menu Items

2014-06-17 Thread David Ashley
I don't currently have access to a Windows machine but I want to add
some system menu entries to the RPM and DEB CMake builds for ooRexx.
Would someone please list the Windows menu items that get installed for
ooRexx?

Thanks,

You might want to look in the incubator at the texttemplate entry. There

But what if a program needs to include two ::DATA directives in a single

Re: [Oorexx-devel] Suspect executables not getting built correctly ...

Another suggestion.

If we have to implement an end-of-data marker we should let the
programmer define that marker as a required option on the directive
statement. That way the language does not define something that will
conflict with the user's data. We make it the responsibility of the
programmer to make sure that the marker is unique.

Re: [Oorexx-devel] Discuss: Embedding data into an ooRexx program.

2014-06-16 Thread David Ashley
Sorry, I was out of pocket most of the weekend so I did not see this
until today.

I have also wanted/requested this feature for some time. It seems only
natural that in an object oriented language that data and program be
held together in a single entity (an ooRexx program or class file).

One suggestion I have is that when parsed, the end of the data should be
either the end of the source file or another directive statement. If you
don't do it this way the programmer will always be mis-coding it because
all other directives work in this manner. And no other directive has a
special END statement/directive.

I would be happy if the data was returned as an array of strings. Rick's
Other return types would also be useful but are not really necessary to
me, but might be to others.

There is another feature that would be useful to me for this. It would
be nice if there was a substitution mechanism for the data itself i.e.
special variables in the data that could be replaced with data specified
by the programmer. Perl uses this concept with the "$var" and the old
Net.Data product used the "$(var)" sequence. An ooRexx directory class
instance could be used as the variable/replacement text. But this is
something a user could code as well so maybe we should not put this in.
Just thinking out loud here.

I have to be perfectly honest here. I do not see these updates as

[Oorexx-devel] Build Machine Status

2014-06-11 Thread David Ashley
All -

I have converted about 30% of the VMs on the Build Machine to use the
new CMake build system we have been working on. Unfortunately. we will
not be able to convert much more than that because a lot of the older
VMs do not have an up-to-date CMake version and can not build ooRexx
successfully. So we will have to maintain the old autotools build for
those environments until we phase them out. But all new VMS will be set
up to use the CMake build system if at all possible.

Also, I have added and removed some of the VMs.

RHEL 6.0 - removed, no longer supported by Red Hat
RHEL 7.0 - added
Mint 17 - added

Re: [Oorexx-devel] Future CPU Architecture Decisions

2014-06-09 Thread David Ashley
The bottom line is that any library or application that is 32 bit only
would not be usable in a 64 bit operating system. Perhaps the most
obvious library is the IBM DB2 Rexx libraries. These are 32 bit only (no
64 bit libraries exist) and would not work on a 64 bit OS, no matter
what version of ooRexx you would use with it. A replacement library

Maybe this is also a good point to address Windows. At this point
Microsoft has not announced anything about dropping support for 32 bit
libraries/apps. So I think that we can safely assume Microsoft will
continue to support 32 bit apps and libraries since the number of 32 bit
only apps is still very large. Indeed, IMHO Microsoft may never be able
to give up 32 bit support entirely. They are between their OS rock and
their user apps hard place.
