Re: [osol-discuss] Compiler mailing list?

2007-08-31 Thread Chris Quenelle
I work in the Sun Studio group.
The tools-discuss alias has a fair amount of non-compiler traffic. I'm
subscribed,
but I don't get a chance to go through the email every day. If there was a
tools-compilers (for Sun Studio and gcc) or something similar, I think I'd
be able to respond to it more quickly. And I might be able to get some other
Sun engineers in my area to sign up. I also subscribe to all the horrible
forum updated emails, but I plow through those even less frequently
than I check the tools-discuss alias emails.

There is some new management interest being revived for adding proper email
support to the SDN forums, but you never know if that will fly, or how long
it will take. It doesn't seem like it should be that much trouble to create
a new alias for OpenSolaris-related compiler questions. It would undoubtedly
also collect questions about compiler-bundled tools (like dbx), and compiler
questions that are not related directly to OpenSolaris. But I think
that seems okay. If it eventually gets replaced by another alias, when we
get proper gateways in Sun Studio forums, that should be okay too.

Just my .02

Hi Holger,

Partial answer.

It is not currently funded, but as Sun begins its fiscal year in a few
weeks, this may change. I've trying to get an assessment of what is
needed (email servers, $$, people, etc.) to make it happen. I don't
know all the issues around why it is prioritized where it is, but like
you, I think implementing it would greatly improve SDN forum usability
and participation.

My other motivation is to remove this barrier so that we can make
decisions on community growth that is not primarily led by infrastructure.

From a larger perspective, how much do we widen the focus of
OpenSolaris.org to included related communities, like tools? Obviously,
Sun Studio is a diverse audience, which includes significant open
source projects like OpenSolaris and OpenJDK.

This site is really about OpenSolaris, and Sun's compilers are not
part of OpenSolaris. Therefore, it doesn't make much sense to me to
create a list here. While they are indirectly related due to their
usage within the project, they themselves don't really have a home
here.

The most logical place to do that would be in the Tools community.
To do it there, you'ld just need to convince them to ask for it - try
 discussing it on tools-discuss.

I have a better idea. Since there appears to be demand in such a list
(well, I have a bunch of generic (non-OpenSolaris) compiler questions,
too... :-) ) I propose to simply create such a list (just a list (title:
Compiler (Sun Studiogcc) mailing list), not a project) and make me
the list admin - I already maintain three lists and a 4th won't hurt me
much.
Problem solved, customers satisfied (hopefully), rants gone... :-)

That sounds like pretty much the same idea with your name added and gcc added.
You still need to go to an existing community to ask them to create it, since
this isn't really a good place to request mailing lists, and the Tools
community still seems the best fit.

Why? The compiler is AFAICT not part of the opensolaris.org community.
If you have a problem with their web forums, then complain to them
about it and get them to fix it. The proper course of action is not to
come to another community (like OpenSolaris.org) and get a replacement list.

Why not go to OpenOffice.org? Why not go to Java.com?

They are just as (un)related.
