Marcus Meissner wrote: snip OK, I'll bite...what worm and what can I do about it?and where is it coming fromfrom one of my systems (all Linux) or one of the destination IP's What defenses will work? Well, it tries to break into your system, but is very likely not in any of your machines if you only see external ips. So far, only external IP's, so that is good. Since it / they have infected thousands of machines in the internet already you will see their scans from there. So the trick is to recognize the attacks and *temporarily* ban that IP address from further access. Then, after the attack, to reinstate the IP. This is what I *thought* that the entry in IPTABLES was going to do, but obviously, it doesn't in my case. However, others have suggested it should work, so I figure something is still left undone in my configuration, which is what prompted my rather long original post, which I would be happy to send as a file to anyone that requests it via E-Mail rather than tying up this forum additionally. Good passwords, having SSH on a different port, or even disabling ssh from the outside are good help. I believe the reason I have not been compromised, only 'annoyed', so far, is because I do have good account AND password schemes in effect, but the best practice is to prevent the person with the axe from using in against the door in the first place, no matter if the door is made of iron or balsa wood, don't you think? Now, previously, I have stated it is impractical for me to change to a non-standard ssh port due to the number of outside systems I support that are NOT part of my network. I am a consultant (not for Linux security, unfortunately) and while I am trying desperately to educate the 'unwashed masses' to vacate Windoze, many do still use that so-called OS and some even may be infected with all kinds of evil virus and wormy critters that my systems so far have resisted. Previously, I tried 'fail2ban' and while it ran, it failed to detect any attacks. I thought I had correctly installed it, but obviously I had not and disabled it when I discovered the 'recent' feature of iptables, pointed out to me by several members of this forum. IPTABLES appears to support this feature, it shows up in the iptables -L printout but Wireshark shows it is not being effective against whatever is attacking. Thus, I probably will need to re-try fail2ban unless you or others have additional thoughts on the IPTABLES solution, which would be my first choice, if it could be made to work. What I did was start with the bugzilla home page which has a link to your profile, login, hit the back page in the browser to get to the link and then I was able to change the email address. Kind regards, Zoran snip I feel this is probably impractical simply because the IP of the attacker never repeats so every attack would be from an IP that is not in the list. What I need is a DYNAMICly created list, which is what I thought the 'recent' feature of iptables was supposed to do. I still haven't given up hope that this worm (if that is what it is) is stoppable using this feature but it appears to come in from a different IP *and* a different PORT each attack, making it hard to trap until the attack actually starts. In fact, the port changes *during* the attack. So far, I have not seen anything I can get my teeth into but the router seems to be too low a level to detect/trap this beast. No, gmail threads on the Subject: line and knows nothing about Message-ID:s or In-Reply-To: headers and thus, does not do proper threading. But it does reduce spam respectably :^) Definitely... which is one of the major reasons I use it on mailing lists. I rarely see spam filtered incorrectly with GMail. I wish I could get results this good on my main email account. [opensuse] ksmarttray not checking for updates as regular user
Hi, I found this thread in the lists: http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse/2006-07/msg00950.html It's a little bit old, and for version 0.42 of smart. I'm using 0.51 from guru repo on opensuse 10.2, and still have this exact problem. I.e. following the advises from all the posts I could find on the topic, I still can not make ksmarttray to go and refresh(update) the channels. If I manually update the channels with smart update as root, then ksmarttray will display that there are pending updates. But it will not do it by itself, unless I run it as root. I found another post, which directs to execute SuSEconfig --module permissions, so ksmarttray receives a suid setting or so, but it did not help as well. Do I need to set ksmarttray suid manually? Is this a problem with the package itself? Or should I follow the workaround proposed by the author of the above mentioned post - to run a cron job to do smart update, and then let ksmarttray run as user, and only notify for updates? Or, changing the the permissions of /var/lib/smart tree, and make this belong to some (maybe wheel) group, so I can run ksmarttray as member of that group? Any suggestion what should be the safest approach? [opensuse] Whither the KDE3 Repository for 10.0?
Hi, Today I ran YaST Software Management for the first time in a few weeks. It failed to update one of my repositories: http://software.opensuse.org/download/repositories/KDE:/KDE3/SUSE_Linux_10.0 It gave a 404 error, so I used a browser to try to see what was up. As I stepped down from the root, http://software.opensuse.org/, through the directories in that URL, I found that when I added repositories I ended up back in download. Then I noticed there's a KDE: directory there, so I figured one level was removed from the directory structure. And sure enough, if you just remove that segment of the URL I was using you get this: http://software.opensuse.org/download/KDE:/KDE3/SUSE_Linux_10.0 Which does appear to be a repository. However, when I configure this as an installation source, I get an alert saying: There is no product information available at the given location ... What should I use to access this repository? However, you provoked me into thinking that maybe something in that ATI card was causing problems. I'll let the list know about it if I can go for a reasonable period without repeats. Thanks to all who responded. Jim After quite a bit of use, I have had no further lockups. But I'm still having some troubles. I'll describe better. I have a machine that haves the gcc 4.1 instaled, with these packages: gcc-info-4.1.0-28.4 gcc-c++-4.1.0-28.4 libgcc-x86-4.1.0-28.4 gcc-fortran-4.1.0-28.4 gcc-4.1.0-28.4 libgcc-4.1.0-28.4 I wanna compile a source that isn't compatible with FORTRAN95 (gfortran) and request for FORTRAN77 (g77) that is provided only by older versions of gcc. So I need to isntall g77 but w/o damage or uninstall the new compilers that is already installed. (may be isntall a cross compiler? I'm no sure.) I downloaded the compat-g77-3.3.5-42.1.x86_64.rpm That's the wrong one, unless you have a 64 bit processor (that's what the _64 says) Yes, I do have a Itaniun 64 based machine. [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/compat-g77 cat /proc/cpuinfo processor : 135 vendor : GenuineIntel arch : IA-64 family : 32 model : 0 revision : 5 archrev: 0 features : branchlong, 16-byte atomic ops cpu number : 0 cpu regs : 4 cpu MHz: 1414.000681 itc MHz: 399.00 BogoMIPS : 2834.43 siblings : 2 physical id: 16899 core id: 1 thread id : 0 I have tried with a binary, but didn't have sucess. So, I tried the source rpm: compat-g77-3.3.5-42.1.src.rpm. with a rpm -ivh compat-g77-3.3.5-42.1.src.rpm Why would you go compile from source, where you probably have the wrong gcc compiler for that job anyway (4.1 instead of 3.5.5)?? Did you look for a an existing binary? I gave you the link http://www.novell.com/products/linuxpackages/opensuse/compat-g77.html There it says that you need the file compat-g77-3.3.5-38.i586.rpm I googled for that (something you could have done too) and found as second or third hit: http://rpmseek.com/rpm/compat-g77-3.3.5-47.i586.html?hl=comcx=0:-:0:3621049:0:0:0 There you are. [opensuse] yast online update
I'm having trouble understanding YaST Online Update in Suse 10.2. There are various aspects I don't understand and I'm having trouble finding the appropriate docs (probably through stupidity). The Help button says Refer to the manual for details. I've looked through the openSUSE Documentation Reference - specifically II.3 Online Update - but it doesn't give much detail. Is there some other documentation I've missed? One aspect I don't understand is the meaning of the symbol consisting of a white box followed by a grey tick. This doesn't appear in the list of symbols on the help menu and the symbols aren't listed in the manual I've looked at. For example, timezone or wxGTK - the available and installed version are the same, so what are the patches? Another aspect is why some patches are shown with a white triangle and white box with a black tick when the packages themselves have a black triangle with a green and white Z (e.g. krb5). Other patches for packages marked in this way are themselves marked with a white triangle and a green and white Z (e.g. python). What's the difference? The final aspect is specific to gtk2. There is a patch for gtk2, which I have installed. Why can't I see a matching patch to gtk2-debuginfo? There's a version conflict. Am I misunderstanding something or is this a bug? There's a specific opensuse-ia64 mailing list - you may get more expert advice there. If you have any possibility to install the corsika application on another machine that uses the x86_64 architecture, I would do that. It will be a lot easier because you can just use the precompiled packages in YaST to setup your development environment. Even if you do need it on the ia64, it may be worth setting up the development environment on an x86_64 machine and building corsika on it just to see how it all works. Then with the benefit of that successful experience, you could try recompiling on the ia64.
