[opensuse] YAST Software management seg faults

2007-10-12 Thread Kenneth Aar
Hi

I have two machines both running 10.3 gold. (One laptop HP 530 1 GB ram,
and Abit Desktop with 2 GB ram)

Running any sort of software management related from Yast results in
error messages like this one:
---
YaST got signal 11 at YCP file
/usr/share/YaST2/clients/inst_productsources.ycp:296
/sbin/yast2: line 386: 22467 Memory segmentation fault
$ybindir/y2base $module "$@" "$SELECTED_GUI" $Y2_GEOMETRY $Y2QT_ARGS
---
Smart Package manager works and so does installing RPMs from the
commandline. But does not work zypper(also says segfault). Smart is okay
but I would rather use YAST for softwaremanagement.

A CD is superior in many ways
to a DVD.

The size for one thing, combatibillity, installtime and
userfriendliness for newcommers to linux. I have not yet recommended
suse 9.3 to anyone with low technical competence. This is because of
the amount of time and effort they would have to put into it.

1 cd install is important to ensure that new useres will start using

I think such a SuSEguide would be really helpful to new users and
Windows-converts and for the older newbs (like me) who might have

I agree. This is a must. Has anyone read Linux format latest special?
There is a two or three sentence install walk through for each new

newbies. This is for mandrake but a similar text to be included under
install would be very helpful indeed.

One thing that I've also found irritating is that during installation I'm
asked to select language and region, however, I still have to manually select
the relevant language modules and change the default "US" setting on my apps
and desktop. It would be great if the information I select at the outset
could be used to preselect the related modules and reset the default settings
on the selected apps.

This has been discussed before and a bug has been submitted, that

Sure enough, after upgrading, Amarok has switched from the xine sound

Where can we submit suggestions for better usability?

For instance there is this two things with the default KDE setup in SUSE
that must be very confusing for new users of SUSE.

1:
The use of the round green gecko button. If you look at the default
desktop on SUSE the same button is found in three different places on
the desktop. But it has three different functions. The three different
functions are: Suse watcher(YOU), KMenu(Kicker), SUSE Greeter.

2:
The use of the word "Control Center" in the KMenu. One leads to the KDE
Control Center the other to Yast.

This is not good usability in my opinion.

This is not meant as a flame of SUSE but as constructive pointers. If
this is not the right forum. Please tell me where I should direct such
issues in the future.

Or CNR in Linspire... ;p

I really think dependency hell could be avoided if the Open source
community could begin to consolidate a few things.

Take bugzilla for instance. Why hasn't anyone come up with the idea of
making bugs easily available across distros and up and downstream
searchable/redirectable? This way if a bug is filed in the wrong place
we could redirect the bug to the right place without need for filing the
bug again. Also if the bug is reported in different places or indeed is
filed in several distros by different users we could more easily see
where we should put our focus. Or if this is a up or downstream issue.

If we transfer this kind of thinking to dependency issues, it would
probably start solving itself in a short manner of time.

Another Idea I'm thinking of is making the package managers do the
dependency searches for you. Instead of letting a newbie search the web
for a package he is missing. download it, install it and find that he is
missing yet another package. The RPM could search the web for the user
and come back with a dialog like this:

"You are missing package x. We can't find this package in your repos.
But this package [package name X], found at www.example.org seems to be
what you are missing. Should YAST download this package and install it
for you? YES / NO
NOTE: This may not be safe to do... blah blah blah. But if you have
configured Apparmor correctly you should be reasonably protected against
system failure."

Just my 2 cents.

Go to http://www.mivu.no/itmtouch/ here for the latest driver. Makefile and
itmtouch.c should be enough.

Then

You will need a driver for your X-server too, it's in the folder

Either download the tarball or just the binary.

*Answer:*
Nothing.

If the only difference after this announcement is that Gnome is the

Then you still have to support your customers for both desktops. Since
some people just can't seem to default install anything.

That again leads to; no more people that can be laid of, which in turn
leads to no new growth. In other words there is no money saved.

So unless Novell just thought they would shake things up a bit, for fun,

now. Now, note that I understand Novells actions. They are trying to
make a better profit(as we all are). It's just that, I don't necessarily
agree that this is the best choice (I would keep the current model).

I for one will hang in there. Since there is no other contender.

Change is good, but in this case it just spells uncertainty. And that is

Hi

I am horrified by the user unfriendliness of the new KDE start menu. I
think I am going insane, searching like a maniac trying to find apps.
What was once a piece of cake is now a nightmare!

How do I remove it and replace it with the old "inefficient" menu?

If someone could point me to the discussion/arguments of how this was
supposed to be easier to use I would be greatfull.

Stupid Installer probably has the very worst user interface I have ever

[opensuse] Ask a question to the upcoming OpenSUSE Status Meeting tomorrow!

2006-05-29 Thread Kenneth Aar, Grafikern.no
Hi

With all the problems and bugs following the release of the latest
OpenSUSE 10.1. I find it hard to believe that I am the only one, who
would find it pertinent, to ask a question for the upcoming OpenSUSE
Status Meeting 2006-05-30. Last Status Meeting was cancelled because of
lack of feedback from the community. I know Status Meetings are supposed
to deal with the future of OpenSUSE. But I feel that we have arrived at
a roadblock that demands our attention. Discussing what cool features we
should be adding in 10.2 doesn't quite seem appropriate.

Come on people! This will never work if we don't work together!

Go to http://en.opensuse.org/Meetings/Status_Meeting_2006-05-30 and post
your queries. NOW!

To get rid of of all confusion we must kill opensuse. - And by that I

[opensuse] Adressing SUSEs weakness

2006-08-21 Thread Kenneth Aar, Grafikern.no
WARNING: Long e-mail.

I have still not seen a good explanation of how you should install SUSE
10.1 on the website.

Therefore I have put this up on the wiki in plain sight:

BEFORE YOU INSTALL READ THIS:

The package manager in SUSE 10.1 is regrettably broken on most systems.
To correct this you should do the following after you have installed SUSE:
* Open Yast chose "online update configuration" , click next and wait
until finished.
* Press the updater icon on you taskbar/panel
* If it updates, congratulations, all is well.
* If it throws up an error. Close it.
* Install the alternativ package manager/updater SMART. Read the how to
here
You probably also want to read about Using 10.1 and the
Most Annoying Bugs.

Do with it as you please. I think it's a start. We must admit our
weaknesses before we can be truly strong.

The reason for this is as follows:

There were only two places on the opensuse website about how to make the
package management work:

Opensuse.org -> Download SUSE Linux -> Scroll abit -> Click Most
annoying Bugs -> Click SUSE Linux 10.1 (Final) And even though It is
the first bug to hit you after you install SUSE 10.1 It's pushed back to
second place. And what does it say?

Fixed with first package management update (please install using YaST
Online Update for instance via "kdesu yast2 online_update"):

It says that it's "Fixed"! You got to be kidding!

Or you could go to:

Opensuse.org -> Download SUSE Linux -> Scroll abit -> Click "Using 10.1"
-> Read a long and not very consise article about all the strange things
that aren't working in suse until you come to Work around. Where it
doesn't really say what to do or how unless you clik -> SMART.

Phew!

Hope this stirs things up.

This is probably a debug build that somehow made its way into your

Aside from this I would also like to know how syncing with mobile

What I am looking for is a log where I can check which files were
not copied from folder X to folder Y when I choose to automatically
skip files.
