I'm using OpenOffice_org-2.2.1-43.1 in opensuse 10.2 and I can. But I had 
to play with the java versions. From memory, I think I'm using the one 
from Sun (via suse's rpms, version 1.5.0_12), and I had to install the 
mysql-connector-java-3.1.12-35 rpm. I can connect to my MySQL databases, 
but I haven't tried forms.

Yeah. That's true. Some work and some don't. The one supplied with ooo 
doesn't. 1.4.2 works but not is 1.5.0 is also installed. that was my problem. 
I had both the sun versions installed. Delete either one of them and it's 
fine.

The latest version of mysql-connector was 5.x.x last time I looked and I
have at least one thing running (funambol) that requires this version or
better of the connector, (BTW the connector is from the MySQL people).

The standard SuSE RPM distribution is still 3.x.x is therefore a bit
problematic in this area as you tend to need to deploy both versions if
you require the latest version for anything. I have not tested out 5.x.x
with OpenOffice. (It would be interesting to find out if anyone had, as
it would simplify things just to have the one version).

No, you do not need to delete any version of java. I have three currently.

Simply go in OOo to the tools menu, options, java, wait perhaps a minute 
till it detects the existing java engines, then choose one.

I haven't been able to do much with OOo base.

I have a database for my library, and the "books" table is linked to the 
"author" table. Well, OOo shows the numbers refering to the authors, not 
the names. I can correct this in "views", but they are read only.

So, I use rekall to manage my database.

I miss a reference or manual for dummies for OOo base. Maybe there is way, 
but I can't find it by trial and error. Rekall was much, much, much 
easier.

I have used it to to tie into the OTRS database (as a mailmerge option).
The database forms stuff is usable to some extent... but there are
moments when it rather feels like pulling ones own teeth out without
anaesthetic :-)...

The frontend to MySQL is just wonderful. Have to have it. The report creation 
is almost there too. Dragging to create relationships is better than Access 
Can't swap now. . .

Hi Carlos.

No. That's exactly what was causing the problem for me. The different versions 
did not appear. I had 1.4.2 AND 1.5.0 installed. Crash. Lose 1.5.0 and 1.4.2 
appeared. Lose 1.5.0 and 1.4.2 appeared. At work with 2.0.4 all versions show 
but the form wizard doesn't allow saving. This has never been fixed in the 
SuSE release as far as I can tell. That's why I went with 2.2.1 from the ooo 
site and just the 1.4.2 so that everything in the database module just 
worked. It wasted a day's work. I hope that this information will help to 
save others time.

Because in OOo I can't use tables with relations in read/write mode, only 
read.

I can create a "View" like this from two tables:

  BooksAuthors
 ---  -
  Book_ID+---> Author_ID
  Title  | Author
  Author_ID -+

If I open the "Books" table, I see "Author_ID" by number. I can create a 
view, and see "Title" and "Author", in what OOo names "views", but they 
are read only. Further more, once created the view, I can't go back and 
change/add relations, it shows a different view of it, one that shows only 
"Title" and "Author" as Text[Varchar], but not where they come from and 
their relations, as if it were a new table.

Useless. :-(

Not entirely...,

Main gripe is that under the hood is some OpenOffice scripting... but
the documentation for the scripting language is to put it at its
politest sparse the last time I looked at it 

There are somethings I would like to do (e.g. put in a template selector
for a default template) and do something about path handling so I do not
have to create different versions of the same template for Windows and
LInux.

I can write to single tables, not those with relation active. I'll try to 
explain again...

My Library "Libros" table (simplified) is shown like this:

Rendezvous with Rama  2

I can create a new entry, but I have to look up manually the number of the 
corresponding author, and write up the number, not the name. Do you 
see what I mean?

This is useless.

I can create a table view, that combines two tables, like this:

   BooksAuthors

   Book_ID+---> Author_ID
   Title  | Author
   Author_ID -+


Now, the view shows correctly:

   TitleAuthor

Rendezvous with Rama   Clarke

But it is Read Only. Again, useless.

All the above works perfectly, and much faster and with less complexity, 
with Rekall.

I understand the problem.

I have a form with a sub-form linked via an index... Whenever I select
an entry in primary form I see all relevant entries linked in the
sub-form... Can edit and update records in both form and sub-form...,

Table structure is roughly

Table A

Index, data

Table B

Index, Link to A index, data

Form to Sub form relationship based on linking field 1 to field 2...

Your structure implies a read only join...

Adding a new subform entry is clunky... and adding primary entries is
definitely very clunky indeed (when committing a new entry tend to keep
ending up on first record in table, so you have to go to the last entry
and continue from there).

Used the wizard, and I do not remember it being easy or intuitive. It is
about year ago 1 set this up, and for the life of me I cannot remember
how I did it at the moment. Should have taken notes :-)

In a strict one to many or many to many relationship an editable table
view does present a problem. When changing something on the many end of
a relationship one can be doing at least one of three things, making a
change which applies the edited record (i.e. correcting the spelling of
an authors name),  introducing a new record (i.e. adding an author for
an existing book), or changing the record relationship (changing the
author of the book). A more usual approach would be to have a read only
table view with a select and edit option (it is also relatively easy to
program)...

This is something definitely missing from the OpenOffice stuff, a drop
down list derived from a database table is useful to have as option .
With the above you can change author easily, but the other two edits do
present a couple of issues

However a question remains how do you handle something like?...

In OpenOffice you can currently build (very) basic data entry forms, and
generate queries and reports for incorporation into OpenOffice documents
(not something I think you can do with ReKall). On the other hand I
would definitely not consider OpenOffice for your requirement The
two things have somewhat different focuses.

I don't have a good solution. What I have is two more fields named "second 
author" and "third author". The complex one would be another linked table:


  index to book index to authors
  ---+---
 1 10
 1 11
 1 23
 1 47

In this way, an indeterminate list of authors can be entered; but I don't 
have an easy method of doing that, not being a database programmer.

That's right, I use it for reports. For instance, to print a list of books 
sorted by author so that I don't buy some book I already have ;-)

It does generate reports, but not in the way I wanted. But I have to test 
the current version, though, to see how it has improved. Rekall is 
scriptable, too, but I haven't tried.

Pity.

I think of OOo as a replacement for M. Office, and this is a thing Access 
could do quite easily. I don't like Access (I have been bitten by it), but 
I can't deny the user and design interface are good, for me at least.

So I use rekall, which is pretty good, although it has its quirks too.

Tend to use the latter kind of "link table" a lot... I have come across
a number of references to fields holding array values, but at the moment
MySQL does not support this. Postgresql apparently does. Suspect this
may also be a bit beyond the ordinary user...

Define easy :-| with Access one spent as much time dealing with effects
of the last patch as dealing with getting Access do something one
expected.. I have also used used Lotus Approach which although radically
different from Access was highly usable. Lotus Script was/is very tidy
which is more than I can say for the Access Basic Scripting... Main
complaint I have with OpenOffice is the scripting documentation is very
poor

Easy to design a simple database. Point and click. When you get to want 
some complexity, then it becomes very dificult.

An interface similar to what OOo base or rekall do, or tries to sometimes.

I don't mean easy as in working correctly, though. I recogn M$ are good at 
designing interfaces, but that doesn't mean that later they work as 
intended or that there aren't gotchas.

As a brief aside I notice that IBM have just launched Lotus Symphony...
(Speadsheet, Word Processor, Presentation Software) No apparent database
support, SLES 10 support only, installation via bin and a min requirment
of 1Gb memory :-(

I remember Symphony for OS/2. I think that might have been happier with 
1gig 
to if you used all the features. Too bad in those days 4meg was big.

Odds are the spreadsheet will have some basic database features?
