OK - take a look at this version: "On behalf of Attachmate, I’d like to congratulate the entire openSUSE community on the release of openSUSE 11.4. Re: [opensuse-marketing] Question from Microsoft geeks on my FB page
A fine line in terminology, When images are created for distribution, they're often then referred to as "appliances" particularly when they're pre-configured for some purpose (eg a LAMP stack). For example, 3 years ago I created a VMware appliance using 11.1/GroundworkOpensource/Nagios bundled with my own custom configurations for network monitoring in a Windows network. Distributing an appliance like that typically saves weeks if not months, instead typically you can be in Production within 30 minutes after pushing the "On" button. If the person has the DVD install, it takes only about the same amount of time to build your own base image compared to exchanging gigabyte files (typically about 1.5G compressed in my experience) over WANs. Also, it's probably not that useful to simply test whether the image launches (it almost certainly should unless it'a corrupted) but directed and organized testing could be useful... ie. special peripheral support in VMware, benchmarking (useful benchmarks require knowhow). Re: [opensuse-marketing] Question from Microsoft geeks on my FB page
Hi guys, Jos and I had just this discussion with GregH in Germany. Greg reports that he has installed openSUSE 11.4 into Hyper-V without any problems (at least that he saw). Additionally, it looks like openSUSE will automatically install Hyper-V peripheral drivers automatically when available, this means that although installing most Linux distros likely will require the Hyper-V Linux Compatibility tools add-on (Similar to VMware tools, etc), it's unnecessary when installing openSUSE. Hurrah for one less step and less complications! As for "natively" -- It does seem that whoever used that word needs to explain what he means. [opensuse-marketing] Meetings
Hello Mates, some questions reaches the Weekly News Team about missing Informations about Meetings. In the past we had introduced that a Meetings comes and after that we published the Link to the last Transcript. Sadly is looks like not every Meeting is added to the calendar, so that means that each possible attendee must search when the next Meeting will be held. And as example some Pages like: * http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:KDE_meeting * http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:GNOME_meeting * http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Marketing_meeting needs an update. So i want to motivate all Meeting holders to add their Meetings to the Calendar and after that adding the Link to the transcript to the Meetings Page. Just my 2 cents ;-) cu Sascha -- Sincerely Yours Sascha Manns open-slx Community & Support Agent openSUSE Membership Comitee openSUSE Marketing Team Web: http://saigkill.homelinux.net German Community Portal: http://community.open-slx.de -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+unsubscr...@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-marketing+h...@opensuse.org

Whoops, I meant to upload them but I forgot... you can get the sources here: http://www.box.net/shared/ds2j53004d The downside to this approach is that it's not easy to translate the slogans to other languages. For every language, five PNGs will have to be generated by hand. I know there's a way to automate this task using PHP scripts or something, but I don't know how. I had planned a launch party for the moment of launch at 12pm gmt only to be told at 11:45 the launch was delayed by 2 hours. As it happens nobody responded to my invitations anyway but even so its frustrating. There was no announcement in any of the lists I take only irc about the 2 hour delay. Re: [opensuse-marketing] Need some quick graphics
Alright, A3 dimensions it is. I used Scribus to create the graphics. It does have an SVG export option, but it produces weird transparent borders. So instead I've exported to PNG at 90 dpi. Download the graphics here: http://www.box.net/shared/c04iezu29j They're a little too big for the wiki (max. 2MB), so I'll just post the download link. Ideally these slides would link to a page with a more detailed explanation of the slogan and the related topic. If you're going to use them, make sure you check legal.txt (inside the ZIP) to see which background images require attribution as specified by the author. Yes, I know that this problem can be solved. But my point is this: it's a pain in the neck and it's a major hurdle for new users. As far as I know, Ubuntu has a restricted formats wizard that automates the install of these codecs. The user has to consent to the install of these proprietary closed-source codecs and confirm that their actions don't violate any copyright laws where they live. Why can Canonical get away with it when Novell can't? Is this because SUSE has its headquarters in Germany and therefore has to adhere to different copyright laws than most distributions?
