Great Erich,

That sounds good to me. I'm sure we can come up with guests and I'll ask
people if they would like to be one to discuss a specific topic.

Hi Doug,

Storyboarding isn’t really what is generally needed in a podcast. However, as
with any podcast, it requires content gathering, booking guests, and coming up
with general topics. Here’s kind of what I envision:

This podcast would be a Linux podcast with an (open)SUSE-first slant. Meaning,
it would cover all topics in Linux news in general, but the headline would
always be something from openSUSE and/or SUSE. It would be weekly or
semi-weekly, depending on overall time to commit.

I envision the following segment format:
- Intro, including “what have you been up to?” for the hosts to answer.
- News from around the Linux community with discussion, with openSUSE and SUSE
news first and headlining.
- Main topic or interview, hopefully centered around (open)SUSE
- Emails & Feedback
- END

That’s what I’ve come up with so far. As far as a launch date, it all depends
on what we come up with here.

Hello all,
I just did a Google search looking for a potential openSUSE podcast
and came across an old thread on this list with various people
interested in starting one up. Unfortunately, nothing ever came from
that, with the exception of, at the beginning of this year, Bryan
Lunduke had started SUSE Open Audio… which never, as far as I can see,
got past two episodes. Not sure what the reasons for that, but from
what I know of Bryan is he is a very busy man.
I’ve been looking for a Linux project to get involved in lately. My
first attempt has been to revive Edubuntu, the education flavor of
Ubuntu. Unfortunately, I have received no response from my contacts at
Ubuntu/Canonical (I helped in the early days of getting Ubuntu MATE
started), and it seems as if the project is being stonewalled in an
effort to let it be discontinued. My reason for this was because my
son just entered Kindergarten and I wanted to be able to provide him
with an operating system tailored to his needs. He has shown an
interest in Linux and has a plush Geeko he regularly cuddles with
(which should have been my first indication to go with openSUSE). I
intend to set him up with the openSUSE Li-FE project when I can get a
small computer (read: Netbook or the like) for him.
That said, with my media production background, podcasts or something
of the like seem to be projects within my wheelhouse. I’m a former
producer with Jupiter Broadcasting and even appeared in an episode or
two of the Linux Action Show, long after Bryan left, and I used to
regularly contribute to Linux Unplugged. After taking a couple years
off, I’ve been a part of the Linux Unplugged “Virtual LUG” when time
has allowed. My day job is as a production director (video editor,
audio engineer, and lighting tech rolled into one) at a church in
Seattle. I could go on and even drop a few names, but that might not
be relevant at this time.
I would not be opposed to leading the efforts to revive a podcast for
openSUSE, or even being a host. I know there are tons of people within
the community who would make excellent hosts, contributors, or
cohosts. Two seems to be a magic number many podcasts use for number
of hosts, but I’ve also seen large successes with three hosts. Single
host podcasts tend to get boring as there’s no color or conversation
to bounce around.
Anyhow, if this seems like a good idea, then let me know. It sure
would be “a lot of fun.”

Greetings,

So we planned the last SFD event of 2016 on Saturday 17th.

We can report that there were ~35% less visitors and those who
attended were new comers on one hand and our usual “suspects” were
lying on their couch moaning about the economy, and/or following their
partner in the Xmas fever spree.

Our venue is adjacent to the shopping mall of Rouen, so this is our
barometer. When there are loads of people in the walkways, then we are
gratified with visitors.

We had:

1.The Chess Club President who came to greet merry Xmas

2.Our Greek lady with some issues.

3.A new lady with FireFox issues

4.Our motor cycler with VLC issues and Leap 42.2 (tip of ice berg)

5.Olivier came to help out as usual.

6.Laurence same sort of things but more patient with ladies in
particular beginners.

7.Two new comers who were in another LUG

8.7 “chance” visitors, looking around, just asking what we do and
when we are back in.

9.openStreemap was there (a representative that is)

10. A young student from another LUG fond of many distributions and
being converted/evangelized to openSUSE.

11. Nathalie to give morale support, tea, coffee, juice, cakes and
make people wait when they arrive…

12. Myself

Nothing much happening, apart from sharing knowledge, applications,
usage, debugging. Until our moto cycler after hearing the lady
complaining about FireFox was motivated to change his desktop to Mate
(not our idea) and people from 7 and 10 above jumped on this
opportunity for approximately 3 hours. The 4G router was red hot
downloading with yast (29GB for the day). The whole story ended in a
nightmare. I had to take the laptop home, reinstall Leap 42.2 fresh
and went to deliver on Sunday :)

There was on top of all this a couple that needed a Dell with Vista
migrated. Olivier spent the whole afternoon on this case. We thought
that we had won when it asked to reboot after installation. No, blank
screen, the video card is not on the HAL list and clearly not
supported.

Also tried Tumbletweed, KO as well. Vista has some happy days to live on.

I did distribute Leap 42.2 DVDs and stickers…

It was my step daughter’s birthday so we closed on time and were quite
happy that we were asked for January dates, which BTW is 28th. I have
5 new people who have confirmed their presence *plus* one lady with
her desktop already in the starting blocks :D

However a smaller audience, we had a lot of fun :)

Best,
Jimmy

[opensuse-marketing] Features list for openSUSE leap 42.2

You all do great work packaging and getting new features into openSUSE.
Please consider writing a small or large paragraph for the openSUSE
Leap 42.2 features page (https://en.opensuse.org/Archive:Features_42.2)
to highlight the packages you submitted for the upcoming release.

Once these are complete, the list will replace the
https://en.opensuse.org/Features and 42.1 will be archived.

You can add new features to the page later if you want, but writing
something on the page before the release would help marketing the

Hi all,

We are nearing the release of openSUSE Leap 42.2 and we encourage
everyone reading this email to help promote our newest release, however
you want to do that. To help promote it, our marketing team has been
brainstorming a few ways to promote it. One of those is to post messages
on social media. The social media plan is updated in English at
https://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Social_media_launch_plan

Please consider translating it and posting it to your local or region
openSUSE pages/profiles as well as to your own personal pages. We also
encourage you to come up with your own tweets, posts, etc and just tag
#openSUSE.

Additionally, if you are interested in translations contributions, we
would certainly welcome contribution to the project. With
https://l10n.opensuse.org/, you can easily help translate release notes
for 42.2 -
https://l10n.opensuse.org/projects/release-notes-opensuse/leap_42_2/. I
want to thank our contributors who have already translated the release
notes. Also, please consider translating our landing page -

There are more than 50 languages offered to translate and the dashboard

[opensuse-marketing] Script for Leap

2016-08-17 Thread Douglas DeMaio

Hi all,

The next release of openSUSE Leap is coming along and we need some help
marketing it. One solution that could be helpful would be to have a
script like we have with Tumbleweed
(https://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-factory/2016-08/msg00256.html) that
produces a list of the differences in version number from openSUSE Leap
42.1 to openSUSE Leap 42.2. It would also be great if the script could
list the differences between 42.1, 42.2 and SLE 12 SP2. this will help
us publicize the differences in the versions and allow us to articulate
the benefits of Leap to potential new users.

The scripts for Tumbleweed were written in python, so some of the script
for the Leap purpose could be reused. If you would like to write this
script for this and future releases of Leap, please please email the
openSUSE Factory Mailing List and cc me.

Hi Edwind,
You can see what the shirt looks like here -
https://shop.opensuse.org/#!leap+t-shirt-A104018398

I've attached the graphics for you to produce t-shirts locally. The
ones on the shop are slightly different on the back. Instead of the
word openSUSE on the back of the neck like in the shop, the logo is
there for the ones I've ordered for the release parties.

Re: [opensuse-marketing] Popularity of Linux distributions

2015-04-08 Thread Douglas DeMaio

I could think of a couple of groups:
- computer enthousiasts and power users
- small business users
- developers (web, app, application)
- sysadmins (server, network, etc)

How would we move ahead and approach these more targeted?

I think this is a good topic for oSC and I'm pretty sure the board will
address it there.

Thanks for the info. The data is a little old and I agree with Henne
that the data and methodology used is questionable.

From a quick analysis on distrowatch, one could conclude openSUSE is
steadily rising given its 12 months, 6 months and 3 months moving
average. It's a solid 4th on that site, which would contradict Donnie
Berkholz's story of the data. All trends show an up tick in popularity,
but this is based off distrowatch's "light-hearted way of measuring the
popularity of Linux distributions." Having a demographic info would
really aid in nailing down our audience. Are there any measurement
applications we use on our website to assess our web traffic?

Re: [opensuse-marketing] openSUSE on Bad Voltage

2015-03-12 Thread Douglas DeMaio

For oSC15: it likely won't happen. Even if it made sense for the
conference (and there is space for it in the schedule) we probably won't
have the time to pull together the needed sponsors to cover the airfare (we
did it many months in advance for SCALE) and schedule it with the crew.
But doing a live show at a future oSC would be absolutely awesome.

On the topic of the openSUSE review on the next episode: It would be
awesome to get someone on the next episode to talk about openSUSE. Maybe
Richard Brown or Doug DeMaio or... someone else? It would be a roughly 10
to 15 minute chat about openSUSE history and, in general, talking about
what's great about it. Thoughts?

Hi Bryan,
I'll be snowboarding in the Alps at 2,300 meter with patchy wifi and a
bunch of beer for the next week and a half. Don't hate on me too much.
I recommend Andrew Wafaa do the interview on this occasion and that
Richard be the secondary choice.

cheers
Doug

Hi all,
Bad Voltage is calling out the openSUSE community and asking them to
write what is special about openSUSE. They are doing a joint review on
openSUSE. Tell them your opinion about openSUSE, what you like about it
and what makes it special at
http://community.badvoltage.org/t/1x37-spooning-with-everybody/10218/9

You can listen to their talk about openSUSE at
