[openthinclient-user] General questions

2013-06-19 Thread Andreas Mayer
Hello,

i am new to openthinclient.

In my school we have some thinclients using thinstation 2.2. Now i think
about changing to openthinclient (Thinstation 5.1 seems to be to
difficult for me.)

We have a windows 2003 Server as DC with AD and DHCP and a windows 2003
server as terminal server.
The thinclients are old computers.

The thinclients should build autimaticly a RDP Connection to the
terminalserver.

My first questions:

Is openthinclient right for me?
Where do I install the openthinclient Manager? Can it be run on the
Terminalserver?

(Antworten auch gerne auf deutsch)

Thanks,

Andreas

Hi,

>From what I can tell - it sounds like your environment would be suitable
for OTC.

It is possible to put the OTC manager on your DC, however, I wouldn't
recommend it. It would be better if you put it on your terminal server.

Two other things to consider - How much RAM do those older computers have
and what kind of processor? I didn't have much success with the client on
older computers.

Also, will you be perfomring PXE boot across subnets? If so, you will need
to add an IP helper address that points to the OTC server.

2013-06-19 Thread Julian Ohm
OTC can be a good solution. I'm running OTC with 2003 Server as dc and dhcp and
2008 server as terminal server. I had old pc as clients but changed to old Igel
thinclients because they don't Need running fans or harddisks.

My Clients automatically start with rdp connection and shutdown after
disconnect from the ts. Perhaps you Need to Set some additional settings for
rdesktop. I can Tell you my settings next week.

Sounds good, Andreas. You sound like a good candidate for OTC. Let us know
if you need any help setting it up.

OTC should work fret for you.

In my environment..OTC is installed on 2012 server.and I have
converted old pentium 3 machines ...no hard drives64 mb -128 MB of
ramto boot over pxeand then connecting to either 2012 or 2008
r2 terminal servers

I did adjust the update repositories to download and update from the
development/experimental

Works great for me

OK

I have installed the Management Software on the Terminalserver. What is
the next step. Do I have to connect with the AD on the DC? What are the
next steps?

Thanks,

Andreas,

Great! Now, you must create the DHCP option so that when a PXE request is
made, it forwards to the correct place.

Create DHCP option 67 and put your OTC server IP address or host hame
(FQDN) as the value field.

I would try to do nothing. Just start the first client. The OTC Server should
do the rest. On the Client ist Looks like nothing happens but you should found
the Client in the manager under "pxe Clients"

If not then First try to deactivate the Firewall on the Terminal Server and try
again. That was my first problem.
