RE: Oracle AQ & MQ Series
Title: RE: Oracle AQ & MQ Series Waleed - I tried implementing AQ to MQ with the MEssaging Gateway. I could not find anyone at Oracle to support it. When I would open a TAR, the analyst would come back and say 'this is not an Oracle product'. I finally got it escalated to the point that I was talking to the developer of the Messaging Gateway component. He helped me get it running, but after all the hassle, we went back and told our application group that we could not support the use of AQ in this situation. Hopefully, the product will mature and it can be useable someday. 64-bit OS
Hi - We have just installed Solaris 2.8 (8) on a new SUN server. Is there a command I can run to tell if it's running in 64-bit mode? char vs. varchar in a data warehouse
Hi - We are in the process of building a data warehouse and data stores. This will be built on a Sun Solaris (2.8) machine running Oracle 9i R1. Estimates are approximately 180GB. The developers have defined most of their small character fields as varchar2 - even the ones of size 1! They tell me that if the column does not have a value, they do not want to have to deal with a 'space' when manipulating that value. Does this make sense? Should I be pursuing this further or shouldn't I care as the DBA? RE: Upgrade and it says it doesn't need it
Unfortunately - this is what I'm having a problem with. I did install with OUI. The log files from that installation are in the "oraInventory" directory. Subsequently, I installed some client software (precompilers) on the machine. The oraInventory only shows the client installation, not the real server. And...I have confirmed - the oraInst.loc file does correctly point to the oraInventory directory. It just looks as though the installer process didn't update the oraInventory correctly. Now I'm afraid I'm Screwed on the upgrade! -Original Message- Sent: Saturday, May 18, 2002 9:58 AM To: Multiple recipients of list ORACLE-L I'm guessing that the 9.0.1.0 server software was not installed using the Oracle installer? Did you "tar" it over from somewhere else? For a server installed using the installer, you'll find a file in "/var/opt/oracle" named "oraInst.loc", which contains the name of the directory containing the Oracle Universal Installer's "oraInventory" directory. Your installer running the 9.0.1.2 patch is checking for that file in "/var/opt/oracle" and probably not finding it. Or, it is finding it and the "oraInventory" directory, but the inventory says that only the client has been installed... - Original Message - To: "Multiple recipients of list ORACLE-L" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Friday, May 17, 2002 3:38 PM > HI - > > I'm trying to upgrade my database from 9.0.1.0 to 9.0.1.2 (Sun Solaris). > The installer tells me there are no files that need to be applied. AQ using a trigger?
Does anyone have experience with AQ tables? I would like to put a trigger on my AQ table so that when a message comes in, it will automatically fire off a job to dequeue the message. I opened a TAR and was told that I can put a trigger on the table, but it's not recommended. When I asked why, they said 'it just wasn't recommended'. RE: Database Recovery - any options?
Exactly that . we don't know what the SA did, nor will he give us much info. This will be pursued once we get all instances back up. We do have the control files dumped to trace, but unfortunately, then it expects the redo logs to be intact, which they are not. We are in the process of restoring from previous backups and rolling forward to the final archive log. The best we can do under these circumstances. Thanks for the input - Lisa -Original Message- Sent: Wednesday, March 06, 2002 1:19 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED] It sounds like one of 2 things to me. 1) The disk partition(s) with your redo logs and control files were on the root disk. Bad idea. 2) The SA restored files other than just those needed for the root filesystem. Could be others, but that's what comes to mind. Do you have control files to trace that you could use to rebuild the controlfiles and then start the databases? You would have to open them with RESETLOGS, which means you would then need a cold backup of each database. Restoring is probably a better option. In any case, it sounds like the SA needs to come clean with what really happened so it can be avoided in the future. The only real reason to perform a migration is to preserve an existing database. In your case, you have nothing except for a vanilla instance which can be re-created easily. oraInventory

RE: BMC Patrol DBXray / CA Unicenter
We use some of those, too. DBArtisan is primarily used by the Sybase and SQL Server DBAs. It has a couple of quirks when connected to Oracle. Especially with Spotlight. I have actually seen Spotlight help me quickly identify a problem which I am not sure I could have found so easily with out the visual picture. I had both tools for about 3 months but could not get anyone to agree to the bucks. Depending on what you are looking for out of OEM it really is not a bad tool. It is the one that is the least intrusive on your servers and you need not create objects in your database for it. Thing I learned though is to make sure you set up warnings for email and not page. Really annoying when you get paged at 3AM cause a tablespace is 80% full. Ya, so, tell me tomorrow. Make sure you do not have alert log monitoring on for development systems. If you do you may be tempted to kill your developers. It might not be the best tool out there but if you work with the right versions of Oracle and use the OEM agents for 8.1.7 or 9i its pretty good. It does not have those problems of not being able to deregister and all that fun stuff that existing in 8. Don't forget that the agents do not have be the same version as the database. -Original Message- WILLIAMS Sent: Wednesday, December 05, 2001 8:20 AM To: Multiple recipients of list ORACLE-L I appreciate everyone sharing their experiences. My question on this topic is what tools are appropriate for what environments? Some tools seem more extensive (and expensive) and therefore appropriate to sites with many Oracle instances. I am currently responsible for 5 production instances all at our HQ datacenter. On those rare occasions when something goes down, some usually quickly contacts me, so I haven't felt the need for a monitoring tool. However, we are discussing a project to put servers in a handful of manufacturing plants and they would be more 23x7 situations, so I have been reviewing OEM (it fails a lot more often than the instance, I'm not about to turn on its remote notification). Naturally vendors will claim that their product is just ideal for your type of site. 8i or 9i for Data Warehouse
Hi everyone - I have been asked to do the database planning for a fairly large data warehouse. The warehouse is currently in Sybase and is about 160 GB. They are planning to move to Oracle very soon. Title: RE: Diffs in SQL*Plus formatting between 8/8i I noticed this same difference between versions 8.1.5 and 8.1.7. In 8.1.5, the substr() function (ie. select substr(column1,1,10) works just fine.but in 8.1.7 it seems to be ignored. Defining the column seems to take care of it. Lisa -- From: Jesse, Rich To: Multiple recipients of list ORACLE-L Subject: Diffs in SQL*Plus formatting between 8/8i Date: Thursday, August 16, 2001 5:43PM Hey all, One other slightly puzzling, erm, puzzle. The default column format seems to have changed between 8.0.6 and 8.1.7 in SQL*Plus, but I can't seem to figure out what it is or find any mention of it in any Oracle doc. We aren't using any "login.sql" files. It doesn't really bug me because it forces an explicit "COLUMN" statement, which I'm all in favor of for production SQL*Plus scripts, but I'm curious as to what changed. sqlplus and substr command
Title: sqlplus and substr command Hi - Can someone tell me if sqlplus functionality has changed between version 8.1.5 and 8.1.7 (on Sun Solaris)? I have a couple of queries that used the substr function on some longer columns. When I run it against my 8.1.5 database, the substr works fine. It appears to be ignored when I run the same query against my 8.1.7 database. How do I get around this? If I define a fixed-length column, will that do it? Implementing Stored Procedures
Title: Implementing Stored Procedures Hi - I'd like some advice on implementing stored procedures containing application logic (ie. written by developers). We have several applications where the developers use stored procedures for much of their coding. We let the developers create or replace their procedures in a development environment under their own schema (with access to all application tables, etc.) to test the logic, but it currently requires a DBA to implement the proc under the application schema. It has gotten to be a very time-consuming job. We don't want to give out the schema owner password to the developers, nor do we know of a way they could add them as the schema owner without giving them more privileges than we want. I am curious of how others are handling stored procedure additions and modifications. Do you somehow allow developers this access? If so, how do you restrict them from damaging other things? If not, does the DBA do it? Does anyone have an automated way? Also, do you keep track of the original "source code" for the procedure, or do you extract it out of the database as needed? Thanks so much for your input - Lisa
OT: Tool needed for database access
Title: OT: Tool needed for database access Hi - We are a sybase and oracle shop. We are considering building a tool (probably web-based) to allow the Security group to set up new users and to allow the developers to add stored procedures as the schema owner, etc. We don't want them to have the specific access themselves, but we would like the tool to log in with an appropriate ID - based on information we have stored in some database tables - and perform their request. Does anyone know of such a tool that is available, or are we stuck writing our own? Just out of curiousity - I'd like to know how others implement developer's code (such as stored procedures) in a non-development environment? Is it a task that the DBA staff does? We currently do, and we are looking for a way to eliminate that workload without giving too much access for them to affect other database objects. Any information would be really appreciated. Thanks - Lisa
Automatic password locking
Title: Automatic password locking Hi everyone - I am trying to implement a process on our production servers. If requested for emergencies, an id is automatically unlocked. This id was previously defined with all access (select, insert, update, delete) to all objects in a schema. I want this id to be active for only 4 hours, then I would like it to automatically get locked. Is there any information maintained in oracle as to the length of time a user id has been unlocked (or active)? I could then query that column and once it was over 4 hours, I could terminate any active sessions using that id and lock it. If I audit this id, would there be useful information in the audit tables regarding length of use? Any help - or other ideas to accomplish this - would be greatly appreciated. Thanks - lisa

Some of these documents are word docs or excel spreadsheets, while others are actual image files. We have looked into the interMedia ordimage type, which seems to work great for the images, but doesn't work for the documents. Is there some other way within interMedia to manipulate the documents? BLOB vs. B-File
Title: BLOB vs. B-File Hi everyone - I'm looking for some information based on your experiences. We have an application that has large objects to store. Recovery Manager vs. SQL Back Track
Title: Recovery Manager vs. SQL Back Track Hi everyone - Currently we are doing backups manually, periodic cold backups, and hot backups in between - we are running in archivelog mode. We are running 8.1.5 and 8.1.6 (soon to be 8.1.7) on Sun Solaris. Today there are only a few small production servers (2 - 5 GB), but we are anticipating a couple large ones (~200GB), and a data warehouse (anticipated to be around 500GB). We have started playing around with Recovery Manager. Our Sybase DBAs are telling us we should look at SQL BackTrack instead. For those of you who are using either one, I'd appreciate your comments on how well you like / don't like it and any "gotcha's" that you have run into. Other than the cost factor, what would you recommend? Thanks very much - Lisa

Extent allocation
Title: Extent allocation Hi - I am confused now about how oracle actually determines the size an extent should be. I have db_block_size set at 8192 and have defined a tablespace (and tables) at initial and next extents of 128K. When I do a show parameter db_file_multiblock_read_count it says 8. Therefore I thought 128K would be a good number, since it is a multiple of these numbers. However, when I check my extent sizes, I see that each extent contains 10 blocks which is 160K. I remember reading an article some time ago about how oracle actually determines what it thinks the extent size should be. Does anyone know of an article like this, or can anyone explain to me why it chose a different extent size? By the way, I looked at several tables and the one common thing I noticed is that the number of blocks allocated seems to be a multiple of 5 - ie. some are 5 blocks, some 10, some 20, etc. I don't know if that's coincidence or a big clue to the whole thing Lisa
Vendor Package Implementation Strategy
Title: Vendor Package Implementation Strategy Hi everyone - I posted this some time ago and didn't really get much response, so I'm trying again. For those of you that are implementing multiple application packages, how to you determine how many Oracle instances and servers to use? For example - do you build one instance per application package and, if so, on one server or separate? Is this possibly a use of NT vs. Oracle (if you only have 1 small application per instance, you wouldn't necessarily need the machine power)? We implemented a few different vendor packages onto one Unix server. We are now looking to upgrade oracle (and Solaris) and are having problems finding a common version that all packages can run on. I have been asked to propose a different strategy going forward, so that we have more flexibility for upgrades, etc. I would like to hear how others have implemented and supported the vendor-provided package scenario. Title: RMAN Hi - I think I remember seeing this posted awhile back, but I do not remember the specifics. We have installed the RMAN catalog on an 8.1.6 server (UNIX). We are trying to register an 8.1.5 server, but it won't let us. I seem to remember that you have to run a script on the 8.1.5 server. Can anyone tell me what that script is? Thanks - Lisa
