It took a long time for science to triumph over creationist beliefs... and
as orchid lovers, you should all know full well that Darwin was right.
I still hold creationist beliefs. I refuse to accept that something
as intricate as the brain can evolve from non-animate
conglomerations. The more I learn of the natural world, the more
convinced I am. Evolutionary trends in contemporary biological life
do not indicate past trends, no matter how much one may want to
remove God from the picture.

Orchids are just one of many reasons I believe in God. The incredible
intracacy and beauty is, in my opinion, not the result of chance.
Evolution is not a lawit is a theory.

[OGD] Orchid Registration

2004-12-10 Thread K Barrett
I understand Julian Shaw has allowed two different names for the cross V.
Lumpini Red x V. coerulea.

V. Grove's Dream = V. Lumpini Red x V. coerulea Pink Flowered Group
and
V. Peregrina Lorenzo = V. Lumpini Red x V. coerulea Blue Flowered Group
From what I understand this has been allowed before and is acceptable under
the international naming protocols.
But!! People who buy these orchids, breed with these orchids and most
importantly remake these orchid grexes should remember that one is made with
the pink variety and one is made with the blue variety.

[OGD] OGD's purpose

2004-12-10 Thread Dorothy Potter Barnett
Marianne F., Harvey B. and Peter C.,
I'm with you. I'm very happy to be a US citizen (my license plate says
IM4 USA), but I also consider myself to be a citizen of the world. I
think some of us "Americans" are a bit too isolated -- we don't even
acknowledge that to be American could also be Canadian, Mexican,
Peruvian, etc. We are rightly outraged about 9/11 (thank you, the rest
of the world, for your support and condolences after that tragic
event), but we don't get outraged at what we are doing to the tens of
thousands of innocent civilians in a war that was started under false
pretenses.

None of us are perfect -- we all make mistakes. Maybe we say things we
shouldn't sometimes. That's all quite human. However, anyone who must
frequently resort to name-calling and denigration of character, runs
the risk of being lowered in the opinions of others. Disagreement is
good. Name calling is not.

Orchids are the tie that bind us together. One of the things that has
astonished, and encouraged me with regard to this list, is the fact
that I read notes from people from all over the world. And you all
speak my language! I'm not talking about English, though that certainly
helps me, but I'm talking about the language of orchids.

Let's keep talking this language, please. I'm on this list because I
want to learn more about orchids.

in reference to Janes remarks regarding Andy...I have known him for over
twenty years I suppose, and she has him dead right. He will spend countless
hours helping you and answering all your needs...I spent a wonderful day
back in Florida with him a few months ago and he was as charming as
ever...So why the acerb? I have no idea though having taken courses in
psychology in college...It is his way...as it is with Guido...who is also a
very charming guy in person...and I should know, having him stay at the
house for days on end...Some folks just have to get it off their chest I
suppose...another thing is that one might easily misinterpret at least some
of what a person writes when not hearing it straight from their mouthAt
any rate do not always sell someone short just from their replies...Even
Peter, though anti American in his messages, is a very helpful and
apparently nice guy when off the subject of AmericaIt would be nice,
however, if these people could reread what they say and try to take a bit of
the edge off now and then...though reading their stuff is about all I really
enjoy (on my part)..It does add spice now and then...Bill

[OGD] America is the world?

2004-12-10 Thread Harvey Brenneise
I try to avoid political discussion on this list, but I can't let this pass.
I believe that most of the world would find this notion offensive. Indeed,
perhaps it is this notion that has gotten the US government in trouble
recently on a number of fronts. In my experience, most citizens of the
world love their countries and don't want to leave them, although they may
want to improve conditions there if possible. In my own travels, I have
often been quite amazed at how much about the US and American politics taxi
drivers know (much more, I might add, than the average American voter), and
I've had some interesting and enlightening conversations with them.
(Perhaps they listen to the BBC while waiting for "rides".) They, of
course, have no voice in political decisions made half a world away from
them that have the potential of greatlyl impacting their lives for good or
ill.

Sincerely,
Harvey Brenneise
In a grey and rainy Seattle

any success breeding Neos in the past? Any advice

[OGD] Re: Evolution

2004-12-10 Thread DennisWestler
In a message dated 12/10/04 6:00:17 PM Pacific Standard Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

"Orchids are just one of many reasons I believe in God.  The incredible
intracacy and beauty is, in my opinion, not the result of chance.

The notion that one cannot both believe in God and accept Evolution is totally puzzling to me. I have no trouble doing both. Certainly one cannot accept a literal interpretation of Genesis as related in the Torah and also accept Evolution. But Darwin's theory says nothing about the existence of God, and not all who believe in God follow the Torah or the Gospels. Catholicism, and most branches of Judaism accept the Theory of Evolution as compatible with their theology. And the Jewish and Christian holy books are but two of many in the world!

Orchids provide one of the most elegant examples of evolution: with divergence of species, convergent evolution, introgression, co-evolution of flower and pollinator, and other mechanisms of evolution clearly visible throughout the family. Many consider the Orchids to be the most evolutionarily active of plant families. Speciation does not occur by chance, but in response to selection pressure of all sorts. This pressure may or may not be random, who knows? And even if it is random, how does that diminish the wonder and amazement this world inspires in most people?

The reality of evolution is well documented. The mechanisms are fairly well understood at this point. Studies of fossils, field studies, genetic analyses, and experimentation show evolution at work on all time scales. Unfortunately plants leave fewer fossils than animals, so paleobotany gives few clues about the origins of Orchids, but cladistics has helped work out the family tree.

A theory in scientific usage does not have quite the same meaning as in common usage. A theory in science must both explain the observed facts and be able to make predictions. Opinion and belief have no part in it. In common usage it seems to mean the same as a hypothesis does in scientific usage. Theories are subject to revision as new information is found, they are not set in stone. As scientific theories go, evolution is holding up quite well; it has lasted better than Einsteinian Relativity has (Relativity is currently under assault by Quantum and Superstring theory, and will probably emerge greatly changed).
