Re: [Origami] Let's Fold some 3D Origami!
There's an overlap of paper on both sides of the intrinsic straight crease, which is curved in the final model. Robert Lang calls the couplets flanges in his flanged pots. We can, of course, have two intrinsic straight creases for the couplet. The surface of the model will then be polyhedral. Cheng Chit What is the best paper to use? Warps can be a problem.
[Origami] Korean Convention 2014
Does anyone know the date and location of the Korean Convention in 2014? Do they have a website? Thanks and Regards Ravi Apte

So far It has always been held in Seoul, South Korea, the weekend after the Origami Tanteidan convention. In 2014, that will be held the weekend after 6OSME: August 16/17 in Tokyo, and is also the 20th Tanteidan! I cannot imagine that they will change the timing for 2014, particularly with so many international visitors expected for 6OSME and Tanteidan, but I haven't seen written confirmation of the dates. Do they have a website? http://www.origami.or.kr It is heavily Flash- and Javascript-based (and entirely in Korean) so I don't recommend it for anyone on an iDevice, you'll need to poke around with a machine/browser that can cope with such content. Re: [Origami] Korean Convention 2014
Hi Ravi, Korean Convention: August 23-24, 2014. Mark Bolitho and I are collecting convention dates for the 2014 BOS Calendar. If you know the dates of your societies convention, please email me (privately! Don't swamp the o-list!) at edi...@britishorigami.info . We have quite a few dates already, but we are looking for more! Thanks, Dennis
[Origami] Mini origami
Happy day, everyone! I love working with two inch papers, but if I cut it down to one inch, it fails. Does anyone know of a paper thin enough and strong enough to work? Thanks and good folding! Christine

Christine I recently had the pleasure of meeting an amazing folder from Germany, Anya, who does mini mini mini origami. Basically models folded from paper about 1cmx1cm (maybe less), that's approx 1/4. Her folding is unbelievable meticulous... I have photos I could send you off-list of her work. She said she mainly uses a tissue paper she gets in Berlin or Potsdam... I'm guessing that it's strong at that small scale. But she also mentioned that she likes this particular tissue paper cause it comes in many different colors. If you want to know more, maybe Anya is on this list; I don't know... but I can try to get in touch w folks who know her to ask. Happy mini folding :) Vishakha NYC
[Origami] 2014 - OSME, Tanteidan, Korea
Thanks Anne and Dennis, So it looks like this 6OSME, August 10 to 13, 2014 Tanteidan Convention, August 15 to 17, 2014 Korean Convention: August 23 to 24, 2014 It will be interesting to know if there are plans for the period between 18 to 22. Generally the JOAS folks organize a tour. Does any one know if this is likely to be a tour this year as well? Thanks and Regards Ravi Apte

There has been talk of perhaps doing another Origami Caravan excursion up to the area devastated by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami, to teach origami at some of the local community centers. It is still *very* much in the planning stages, and may not be possible to pull together given all the other activities beforehand, or even feasible given the number of attendees. I'm sure there will be public announcements well in advance if it is likely to happen. And if not, then I'd encourage folks to consider either taking a tour on their own (say, down to Kyoto or the like) and/or heading early to Korea and touring around a bit there. Start doing research now, to see what might interest you, and you'll be able to make a well-informed choice when the time comes! It's a busy time of year for travel in Japan, so things will have to get organized pretty early, and with lots more overseas visitors expected this year, I think we'll have schedules much earlier than usual. The Japan National Tourism Organization ( http://www.jnto.go.jp/ ) has lots of good information; as does the Korea Tourism Organization ( http://english.visitkorea.or.kr/enu/index.kto ). Hope that's useful, Anne
[Origami] New video: Braided Star by Maria Sinayskaya
Hi everyone! Yes, I've fallen into a folding frenzy - as much as my time allows right now at least - and it's all about Maria Sinayskaya's wonderful stars! Here are some of my folds: http://www.happyfolding.com/gallery-sinayskaya-star_corona_boreale http://www.happyfolding.com/gallery-sinayskaya-star_corona_boreale_2 http://www.happyfolding.com/gallery-sinayskaya-braided_star http://www.happyfolding.com/gallery-sinayskaya-hex_star http://www.happyfolding.com/gallery-sinayskaya-star_sonobe http://www.happyfolding.com/gallery-sinayskaya-star_corona_lunare The good news is: I'm also in the process of making a set of three videos on Maria's designs - all of which should be available before Christmas. Plus, the first one is available already. This video features Maria's amazing Braided Star from her Corona series, and is absolutely stunning while still beautifully simple to fold. Thanks to Maria for all her fantastic designs, for her generosity in sharing folding sequences, and of course permission to produce some instructional videos and make them available to you! Picture of the Braided Star: http://www.happyfolding.com/gallery-sinayskaya-braided_star Video on YouTube: http://youtu.be/4n2qOL3_cec Video on Happyfolding: http://www.happyfolding.com/instructions-sinayskaya-braided_star Also be sure to check out Maria's website http://goorigami.com and her Flickr stream http://www.flickr.com/goorigami - she isn't just a superb designer, but also meticulously chooses paper and photographs her models so beautifully. Best wishes and happy folding, -- Sara

We can, of course, have two intrinsic straight creases for the couplet. The surface of the model will then be polyhedral. Cheng Chit What is the best paper to use? Warps can be a problem. Dianne Stephens To provide sufficient rigidity, use thicker paper like 110 gsm Elephanthide. In Mitani's models, the couplets or flanges are exposed on the outside. It is possible to have the couplets hidden by having them on the other side. For couplets, with two intrinsic straight creases, crimp the couplet at the vertex (point where the polygons meet). For couplets with an intrinsic curved and a straight crease, theoretically, you will have to have an infinite number of crimps on the couplet. Try transforming the intrinsic curved crease into a finite number of straight lines and crimp. This area of 3-D folding is intriguing. We can extend the couplet folding technique to non-rotational symmetric models. Here two of my couplet folded models: http://www.flickr.com/photos/chengchit/8529417567/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/chengchit/6236286619/ Cheng Chit
