Re: [Origami] A4 or letter-size paper for color-change models?

2023-05-11 Thread wanderer via Origami
Yeah - good Q Gerardo. I do have some models that need A4 or letter paper, and a duo sheet would be handy. But I only have same color on both sides kinda A4 or letter paper. I’ve sometimes doubled up two color sheets and made a duo version but sometimes that option tends to thicker than is ideal. Other times I’ve used white A4 or letter paper and drawn or printed on it in color to create a duo effect. The third option is like you mentioned, cutting A4 or letter paper from a larger sheet. I have some scrapbook paper which is 12”x12” but it is more like cardstock thickness. I think one can find letter size scrapbook paper which is printed/color on one side and white on the other - but this maybe cardstock as well. There’s some beautiful Kraft paper rolls that are green or blue or red on one side and then Kraft colored on the other side. This kinda paper also has textural ridges, which are quite nice. And one could cut A4 or letter paper size from the roll - but that takes a little careful effort to get accurately sized sheets. Best,Vishakha .On May 11, 2023, at 12:20, gera...@neorigami.com wrote:HIWhat paper do you use for color-change models that start from an A4 or letter-size rectangle? Re: [Origami] Books discussions + Re: Tanteidan Convention book #1 (1995)

2022-12-31 Thread wanderer via Origami
Hi everyone! & happy new year too. I think that if we created separate FB groups for each topic that we thought would flood the o-list, that now puts the onus on people to go visit each of those groups. I think there’d be less discussion. Imo. Also - I wonder - why should origami things be differentiated so minutely. If there was a FB group on, let’s say some specialty paper or something, that ppl deemed was such a specialized topic, how would I even know whether this topic would interest me or not - if it wasn’t on the o-list.Btw, no one can know beforehand, whether what they post will interest one or 100 ppl. So why would you separate topics then? How can one know what topics will bother someone or not? That line of thinking doesn’t make sense to me. Post what one wants, as it relates to origami, and let ppl on the list respond as they see fit. Even if email is now sorta considered old-skool, I think the beauty of the o-list as it is now, is that everyone can voice their ideas, in one place… and true, some interest me and some don’t. But that’s how group conversations go. But luckily, I don’t have to go to x number of FB groups to follow origami related chat. That’s my 2cents. VishakhaNYC.On Dec 31, 2022, at 13:31, Anne LaVin via Origami wrote:First off, let me wish all the O-list members, far and near, a very happy new year!On Sat, Dec 31, 2022 at 7:40 AM Lorenzo via Origami wrote:Just a note about this topic (books/publications): I held back from sending these kinds of messages to the list, in the past, because I thought (and still think) these are interesting topics for a small part of the origamists only. And I didn't want to bother the list.Recently, I received only a few signs of interest for a separate group (focused to books/publications only). Too few, in my opinion, to give life to something that has a future, and certainly I don't want to promote any separation or "restricted" group, at all, and furthermore I'm also discontinuous in my activities, so it has to be a shared effort. So, please, keep contacting me privately, if interested in discussing about collecting books, as we can sort out a proper solution (such as a public FB page which anyone can consult, without having the email inbox flooded).I will play devil's advocate, here, and ask *why* a group mailing list is not a "proper" solution for this discussion? Even if a particular topic is of interest to only part of the community, isn't that nearly always true, for any given thread? While I am the first to agree that the use of email (and the technology that people use to read and send it) has not evolved in a way that makes true discussion lists all that common any more, this is a pretty low-traffic list at the moment. It could, in my opinion, certainly withstand some regular discussion of something as important to the community as origami books and other publications. If that level of list traffic were to be perceived as a "flood", or if this sort of thing is somehow no longer desired by the list membership, well, does anyone have a better idea for some sort of forum that would support such a discussion? Should we finally find another underlying solution for a home for the O-list community?Personally, I do not think that a social-media page is really that great a way to have a discussion; but then, email has its own limitations, too. Honestly, no matter what you do, it's hard to have a *conversation* with 1200 people!  - Email lists lately seem to mostly get used for one-way, announcement-style stuff;  - Facebook pages require a user to "go" to a spot to make sure they see all the new material (and even then The Algorithm tries hard to only show you what it thinks you want) and then dig through nested comments to follow a conversation; and don't even go into what happens when users have blocked or unfollowed each other so that no one can actually see a whole thread;  - other social media's interfaces tend to focus on the imagery (still or video);  - forums or bulletin-board-like setups require a user to "go" there, and then typically sub-divide content to the point that conversations die out because they get hopelessly specificAnd few systems are going to make it easy for folks to discuss something for more than a few back-and-forth comments if they're coming in on a phone or similar device. It comes down to what specific sort of conversation does one want, and on what topic, and how do you want people to interact with it, what people, how often, etc.?  I think if one can try to nail down some of those answers, then there's hope of creating a viable place for a particular online (sub)-community to exist.I have a server which could run any number of things - would something other than email be useful, here?Anne

english transcript translated [i have not edited this translation in
anyway, so please excuse any errors that have made it thru google translate]
good evening everyone, so I am as you said. Uh Miss Maurice, visual artist,
urban artist, street artist, you can put in the box you want I don't care
uh, as you can see uh here no, I make installations that are made up of
hundreds of paper folds uh folding paper so who is called origami? Uh one
returning from Japan, but before that uh from China urban installations
that I make all over the world before explaining to you why these shapes,
why these colors? I may have told you a little bit about the origin of
these installations because it's true that we talked about forgiveness,
about the creative origin and sometimes it can come from an accident.
Because all these installations started after March eleventh two thousand
and eleven when I was in Tokio after the events so earthquakes, tsunamis,
fuckushima And so it was after these events that I started his
installations to say my nuclear name, also drawing inspiration from the
legend of the thousand cranes in the history of Sadako, as we will be able
to talk about a little later.
Uh, if you're interested, those urban installations. As seen in this image,
they are colorful in a city that is all too often a little too gray, just
because you think it is. But everything is gray, usually the bitumen, the
walls. And so it's a way of bringing a little bit of nature, a little bit
of color back into our cities. Because finally, these colors, we find them,
but in nature uh, natural phenomena the rainbow Moreover, I take uh the
colors of the rainbow which is finally the decomposition of the light. So I
will pretend to say that I put light in the city afterwards, its colors are
therefore also the spectral colors. But these are colors that are still
universally recognized as messages of peace and harmony. I can tell you
about the rainbow nation that Nelson Mandella was talking about and we also
have the Alger Better movement which is picking up its colors. The Rainbow
Warrior with Greenpeace, so it's really a message of peace. Uh here,
because between humans, regardless of our origins, our differences, we can
all be able to live together in harmony.
So it's really a work on the human, but also a work on nature and this
image, so rather well, because we find the hexagonal shape. And it's a form
that is very close to my heart because there is an animal. Well, there are
even several of them. But I'm focusing on one in particular that makes
Hexagons. And this animal is the bee, the Hexagon, because it is a very
optimal form. If we came to make thousands of soap bubbles in this room, it
would be organized into a Hexagon. An optimal form too, which reminds me
that I am too close to the microphone which reminds us that a small insect,
we can be really linked to it, us big humans, when we know that the bee is
a pollinator, that it It is thanks to them that we have fruits and
vegetables and that we humans, until proven otherwise, are not plastic
eaters. So it was a way of showing. Uh, uh, this link between humans and
nature, here, an installation created uh yes at La Villette, in Paris.
Well, I currently live in Paris, but I come from Haute Savoie.
The base here, uh, a cloud so afterwards, we can see uh, different shapes,
different things. I like to play on a part of abstraction by taking up so
later, it's France. Here, we have the triangle because for me, it really
evokes spirituality. It is also the symbol of home, of security. But uh, in
looting, I like to use geometric shapes that will remain abstract, but that
will still be evoked. Uh, uh, some things and if you look, But you can
guess shapes of birds, butterflies, flowers, flowers. So it's really
elements of fauna and flora that I try in my own way to bring back. Uh, in
the cities, a bit like, you can see climbing ivy there as well. And then
finally, it is also an anthem. Uh, I told you earlier at Solidarity, but if
you look closely at most of his words, his forms, then I don't have time to
explain everything. Why how? But these shapes appear because there are
folds around them and ultimately there is nothing inside.
So it's just to say that even if we want something that doesn't exist.
Finally, if we get together, we can get there and and and create things,
create things together. We can also play on Yvonne's kwan secularism
interaction. It was to encourage passers-by to come and take origami, to
make another one at rest. And so uh, I also like the work on uh on the
interaction and the interaction also finds it with this accumulation of
folding. It's as if, eh, folding was an individual and so we find the
action of solidarity.

ps - this note has little to do this particular o-list email thread but
more a general note. since i am writing to the o-list i thought i
would attach this request as well. i see that many folks do not sign their
o-list emails with name. i would appreciate it if ppl did that, along with
where they are. the person's name and identity is not known otherwise,
email addresses arent always self-evident. and only when one does
reply-all, does one get to see the name of the sender. so just a thought. a
request. to please sign your emails. thank you.

Re: [Origami] Jack J Skillman

2022-09-05 Thread wanderer via Origami
hi david, i dont know much about skillman... except that his jackstone
model was a tough one for me to fold in my early years of folding.
from the harbin book, getting from the 2D stage to the 3D model was not
easy...
and it wasnt till the late 90s (i think) when i took the jackstone class
with vicky mihara avery that i got to fold it... which was quite a thrill.
i hope you are able to get the additional information you need for the page.
appreciate your effort in keeping up origami news.

Re: [Origami] Research on gender differences in origami

2022-08-11 Thread wanderer via Origami
Thank you Elina, for asking this question.

Also, thank you to the journal search suggestions; I think I will search as
well. I’m curious to see what research has found out…

From my own experience as a long time folder in NYC, it did seem to me that
there were differences in what different genders folded. But that that
difference was also related to age, imo.

For a long time it was mainly male folders doing tessellations and complex
animals etc. And females were more into practical objects, flowers, stars etc.
Again, these are just my observations.

Also - I think some of these differences are being broken down by the newer
younger set of ppl coming into the fold. There are more well-known female
folders now, known for tessellations and complex models etc. I think that
seeing women creators doing these new model types, is a great way to encourage
young girls to do them as well.

Btw - i don’t wish to say at all, that complex models and tessellations are
greater (in anyway) than any other models. There are stars and modulars with
amazing folding sequences, creative locks, and beautiful results!

For me personally, I see a change in what I want to fold these days. When I was
younger, I did fold more complex items. I didn’t fold dragons and insects much
but def complex models. Now, as an older folder, I am finding myself liking
much simpler models, and being quite specific about what I’ll learn and fold.
Like modulars w less than 12 pcs only, or flat models of birds and flowers, or
bird models, etc. Not sure if my changing folding inclinations (vis-a-vis age)
is something others have experienced or not but it’s been a surprising
revelation to me.

I hope everyone is doing well. Staying healthy and folding happily.

[Origami] Q for US folders

2021-05-20 Thread wanderer
hi all, i know there are many books that are great primers and intros to
origami...
i was wondering if there was something similar on the paper front. is there
an easy to find/get/send a starter paper kit - with paper cutter and bone
folder and diff size papers etc?
of course i could put it together but a pre-made kit would be so helpful.

you are welcome to write me off-list or not with this info. i would like to
send something like this to a friend's son who is 14-15 right now and is
interested in origami but doesnt have paper...

Re: [Origami] CoC - Focus

2021-05-18 Thread wanderer
Re-sending to include CoC in subject line

Hi Stacie, thank you for your comments. I found them v helpful. I’ve been
attending origami conventions since 1997 and yes I know that whenever ppl meet
in groups, things happen. Good things. And bad unwanted things too. But I was
still surprised (and very sorry) to hear that it was happening within the
origami community. And so we should all be more aware of it and the how of
it... and I hope this discussion and awareness makes us all be more willing to
deal with these situations in the best moral/ethical/legal way possible. We
should be making our origami spaces safe and open and inclusive. And any
attempts by individuals to counter that goal should be dealt with. I can’t
speak to exactly how the CoC should be worded or the efficacy of one version
over another, but at least the first step to have a CoC should not need debate.
And to your point, any and all complaints raised should be taken seriously and
not dismissed. What seems supremely uncomfortable to one person may not seem
like anything to another.

You didn’t raise this issue specifically - of using gender pronouns - but it’s
a similar issue of having to learn new things and of becoming aware of
something that may not affect you directly... but would be helpful for the
community as a whole. I know that when I first encountered the use of
specifying one’s gender pronouns a few years ago, I felt it was not needed. But
that was my privileged point of view as a cis woman. It didn’t take me long to
see how ppl may need that specificity of their gender pronoun to feel
comfortable in public fora that the origami conventions are. And that with my
use (and others use too) of specifying my (their) preferred gender pronouns I
would be normalizing it for all.

Thank you again,
Vishakha (she/her)

I support a CoC at origami events.

It would be helpful if in moving forward instead of off-topic examples being
used to discuss the need for a CoC that examples of actual harassment that are
already publicly stated by at least one person that include assault, unwelcomed
touching, conversations that include inappropriate sexual references, and
sexualized photos being taken of them doing something as innocent as folding
large models at a convention are the standard to which points should be made.
Versus other less innocuous incidences.

It would also be helpful if instead of lumping in together credible complaints
vs those deemed not-harassment they be referred to individually as such. When I
read “if” harassment occurred it leaves a lot of room for assumptions that
complaints will not be taken seriously or given full consideration. The word
“if” vs “when harassment has occurred” and “when it’s been determined
harassment did not occur” could go a long way in lessening misunderstandings in
these discussions.

There seems to be an over riding concern that to have a CoC, that is designed
to benefit everyone in the community, will cause the floodgates of hysterical
and unreasonable complaints to swing wide open. I could be wrong but I don’t
believe that will be the case. Reporting incidences is fraught with the
potential to drastically increase the amount of stress a person is already
enduring because of lack of support and empathy. This is why it is so well
established why people of both genders generally don’t rush to report
harassment or assault incidences. Victims are often harassed even more for
reporting or are ostracized for appearing to cause a rift within a community
that many would prefer not to have to be aware of.

My hope is there is room for discussion in that most incidences will not meet
the criminal threshold where police become involved. I suspect, based on my own
life experiences, that most complaints will be due to a lack of awareness that
some behaviors make people uncomfortable. That doesn’t mean they’re ok. And it
doesn’t mean they should be ignored. And it doesn’t mean that I think this
happens only to women. But I am a women so to speak from my own experiences it
is the only perspective I can offer.

For instance, at the one origami convention I attended there was a moment when
a friendly gesture lasted a little too long and forcefully leaving me to feel
uncomfortable. Did I complain? No. Why? Because I gave the person the benefit
of the doubt that they didn’t realize their gesture was discomforting to me. If
it happens again the next time I see them I will say something to them
privately and directly and explain why they made me uncomfortable and ask them
to not do it again. If they choose to do it again and a protocol is in place I
might report a third incident. Or I might not attend events if I know the
person would be there. To be clear: It’s the hand shake or hug that lasts too
long, or even hands around my waist at all but especially for too long as
someone moves past me, a

Re: [Origami] Help with model information

2021-01-01 Thread wanderer
Hi Patsy, that’s an intriguing Q you’ve sent.

Did you fold it? If so, is it a 2-pc or 4-pc modular? I’m trying to think of a
flat modular wrapped model like that...

Instead - I’m wondering if it is a 1-pc model. There are flat twist rose models
that could give that same wrapped illusion.

http://freedomi.brinkster.net/Sy/Diagram/RoseBrch.pdf

It could also be like a tato fold... there are many options for that. Here’s
one.

The artist interviewed (who appears to have designed the hanging 3D shape
part - he calls himself a "perceptual artist") calls the origami piece
(around time mark 0:44) something that sounds like "katana" which I'm going
to guess is him mis-speaking/mis-remembering the word "kusudama." (TOTAL
conjecture on my part. But the word "katana" in Japanese means "sword" so
something's odd there.) At time mark 0:47 there's a very clear shot of the
pieces. It looks like it's made from just a few piece, or maybe even one
piece - you can see that there aren't very many seams.

Hi Anne and others, thank you for sending your email w more links to the
making-of etc. From what I saw, the artist Murphy isn’t the same person who’s
shown folding the origami... that person looks Japanese and could just be a
model not the person who actually folded the models.
Also what Murphy says is, I believe, origami “components” not katana. And he
goes on to say that it’s all hung by other “structural components.”
Re: the origami model itself, it looks to be one piece that’s folded into that
shape. I’ve folded something similar but don’t know whose model it is right off
the bat but maybe Montroll or the ‘German artist whose name I don’t recall now
but he and his wife had visited NYC convention many years ago’. I’m going to
look for his name...
I wouldn’t be surprised if the letters had been printed on A4 size paper since
A4 has geometric qualities that American letter paper does not.
I loved the car from R side becoming logo from front... that was swt!!!

Happy folding :)
