[Origami] Origami Sighting (toot toot)

2017-10-10 Thread Jacob Metzger
To all,

A local paper did a very nice writeup on my Sukkah, which I've been
decorating with origami for over 20 years:

https://www.jewishlinknj.com/community-news/bergen/21013-
origami-sculptures-adorn-teaneck-sukkah

Here is a description of what a Sukkah (part of the Jewish holiday of
Sukkot) is:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sukkah

Here are some additional pictures of the origami in my Sukkah:

http://ge.tt/7pFrvqm2

Some key facts that (I think) o-listers will be interested in:

By definition, a Sukkah's roof is porous, made from organic materials such
as cut tree branches or bamboo. I use mats made out of thin bamboo strips.
So the challenge before you get out of the gate is rain - especially here
in the north-east United States (Teaneck, NJ). Since I started, I've had a
retractable awning that I can extend over the Sukkah in case of rain
(currently, awning version 2.0 is made from sturdy canvas, version 1.0 was
made from corrugated plastic, very prone to cracking and leaking, both
bought from the Sukkah manufacturer.) My Sukkah's walls are made out of
fourteen 4-foot-wide interlocking fiberglass panels, creating a 12 foot by
16 foot Sukkah.
The biggest challenge has been humidity and dew. Over the years, I've
learned which models hold up best to hanging outdoors for 10 to 14 days.
The #1 champ? Paolo Bascetta's 30 piece star - rock-solid! If anything, the
humidity makes it stronger. Sonobe and sonobe variations are also up there
as excellent performers. Some models depend on the paper or paper ratio:
Francesco Mancini Star Holes kusudama using 3:4 ratio paper holds up very
well; made out of 2:1 ratio paper, it will "melt" spectacularly over the
holiday!
As far as other "not recommended" models, I was crushed to see my Fred
Rohm's dollar-bill star of David unravel completely, the first year I put
up origami in the Sukkah.

The origami (over 125 models) will be up in the Sukkah this year until at
least Saturday night, October 14 (probably until Sunday morning). If you
will be in the area of Teaneck, NJ and are interested in seeing it, please
come by. Email me before 6:00 PM (US Eastern time) Wednesday, October 11
with an approximate time, and I will give you all the pertinent information.

Thanks.

2017-08-22 Thread Jacob Metzger
A coworker gave me his Summer 2017 issue of Binghampton (NY) University
Magazine. It has Robert Neale's Magic Star on the cover, with the title:

"Paper Power: Origami batteries energize ideas for future"

The excellent article describes Binghamton University professor Seokheun
Choi's work on paper batteries, utilizing origami. There are plenty of
pictures, with Neale's star (called a ninja throwing star here) shown in
both formations (and as a module).

All here:

https://www.binghamton.edu/news/magazine

Seems like a clever use to be able to transport batteries in "Off" position
(star); when in ring shape, 8 batteries are connected in series!

Enjoy!

[Origami] Origami sighting -- NPR Fresh Air, Terri Gross interview with Wendy Whelan, retired ballerina 7/10/2017

2017-07-11 Thread Karen Reeds
I heard this on the radio today. The whole thing is worth hearing:
"From Injury To Recovery, A Ballerina Fought To Retire On Her Own Terms"
(The URL for the interview has links to the podcast and a beautiful
video snippet of Wendy Whelan rehearsing)
http://www.npr.org/2017/07/10/536434340/from-injury-to-recovery-a-ballerina-fought-to-retire-on-her-own-terms

Here's the origami excerpt from the transcript of the interview:
http://www.npr.org/templates/transcript/transcript.php?storyId=536434340

WHELAN: Yeah. That ballet you're talking of is called
"Polyphonia." And it was made on Jock Soto and myself and three other
couples from the New York City Ballet around the year 2001 by a young
choreographer at the time named Christopher Wheeldon. He chose Jock
and I to sort of be the central figures of this ballet I guess. We
have two duets - two very potent duets in this piece, and he chose us
to sort of collaborate on it with him.

And we made that duet in one day. It was like magic happened. We just
- the three of us got together. We got this music. We had ideas.
Chris' ideas lead to sort of a conversation back to him, and he
decided yes or no. And it just unfolded like origami. And basically
the duet is like origami. It's folds and openings and taking one
movement and flipping it into another shape, into another shape, into
a kaleidoscopic unfolding of movements. And that's the very last
moment of the piece. And I always felt like I was a switchblade in
that moment.

GROSS: Could you describe, to the extent that you could describe this
kind of thing, what you're doing physically at that moment?

WHELAN: Well, Jock - my partner Jock Soto - he's one of the greatest
partners in ballet of all time. And he was like a magician. And
luckily for me, I got to partner with him for about 15 years. And he's
holding me in a certain way. And he lifts me up like a jackknife from
under my hips, under my bottom, sort of taking my hips high up into
the air. And my legs are in a jackknife position. And he drops me back
down, and he kneels at the same time. And one leg stays attached to
his leg, and the other leg does a whole - a 360 around that leg, that
thigh that I'm laying on. And I'm just - I'm holding onto my my foot.
And I'm just sort of doing a back dive, holding onto my front foot,
backbending with his support, rotating, cartwheeling backwards,
catching myself on the floor with my hands, letting my legs follow me
and sliding under his leg and to a kneel. And he kneels behind me, and
we both look at the audience. And the lights fade, and it's just
really, like, cool (laughter).

GROSS: And how does it physically feel? Does it feel like, wow, this
is hard; I'm really exerting myself?

WHELAN: No.

GROSS: Or does it feel...

WHELAN: No.

GROSS: ...As fluid as it looks?

WHELAN: It feels heavenly. It feels like magic. It feels like it -
like there's no other place I'd rather be than making that movement
right there then, yeah.

Hi Louise,
Thank you for sending this notice. I had no idea that my parchment-folding
baking grid trick is featured in the current issue of Cook's Illustrated
Magazine. How on earth did they learn that I do this when baking cookies in
Haverhill, MA?!  Now I understand why I often feel as if somebody is spying on
me whenever I bake! Well, it's curtains for my kitchen windows from now on.
Actually, I had submitted my idea to Cook's Illustrated Mag ages ago--the
enticement being a free 1-year subscription--and never heard back from them.
Looks like origami piqued their interest after all. They did a wonderful job
with the art that illustrates the method. Now I'm off to buy five copies for my
mother.
Thanks again for the notice.

Answer (one of 70+), from Ian McFather to a firecracker of a daughter,
Written Feb 27, 2015:
Introduce yourself to the beleaguered parent and offer to buy them a drink.
Perhaps take a piece of paper (tear out a magazine page?) and make a paper
airplane or a paper flower or – if you have the skill – some origami as a
gift for the upset child. In addition to being an empathic gesture to the
parent, it'll be psychologically more difficult for you to be irritated if
you know their first names

Directed by Tian Zhuangzhuang.

In the film a young bride receives as a wedding gift a paper cut.

There are many paper cuts pasted on windows throughout the

film. Later, for her young son (approx age 2) she folds a "Blow-up"

frog origami model ( ? with extended legs). I've never seen this particular

model before. Does anyone know if this traditional Chinese model has

been published/ diagrammed anywhere?

Our other Club news: the family of Mrs. Teruko Shiono, who died recently,

has donated to OCoP a large supply of: OUSA Annuals; origami books; and

paper supplies. OCoP plans to share these supplies with the origami clubs
at:

Sq. Hill, East Liberty and Dormont Libraries; CMU and Univ. of Pgh. We are

most grateful to the Shiono family for this support of our program.

[Origami] Origami Sighting - Origami Hot Air Balloons in Sci-Fi short WINDOWS

2016-05-27 Thread Oriland Info

Hello ALL,

How cool is that to see origami in movies?!

Wanted to share this origami sighting with you all.
Some time ago we've been asked to create Origami Hot Air Balloons for a
movie set in Los Angeles to play their part in a short sci-fi film
called WINDOWS directed by talented Maru Buendia-Senties.

The director said that everyone loved the origami balloons and that
without them their film would be missing a bit of its soul. That was
very nice hear.

They’ve wrapped the production with amazing footage and now have the
Indiegogo campaign for this ambitious Sci-Fi short about humanity and
technology. They even have awesome Origami Perks - the original origami
hot air balloons from "Windows" set!

You can see some footage and learn more about it http://bit.ly/windowsfilm

Please check it out and maybe you would like to support this brilliant
Sci-fi short WINDOWS through their Indiegogo campaign.

Thank you!

Sincerely,
Yuri and Katrin Shumakov

Photographer, Alma Haser, has combined origami and photography to create
unsettling and mesmerizing portraits. I don't know if she's done her due
diligence for origami usage but these portraits are amazing. I've often
wondered about how paper as an artistic medium already can be used with origami
to create a new kind of creative tension.

>From 3-D bioprinting that could one day generate heart tissue to
origami-inspired structures built for medicine and space exploration, a new
set of educational videos continues an exploration begun three years ago
inside the creative process that leads to innovation.
View this on Nsf >

The new "Science of Innovation" videos feature the inventions of six
trailblazing scientists and engineers from around the country, including:

"*3-D Bioprinting*" -- Adam Feinberg of Carnegie Mellon University has
created a technique that expands the use of 3-D printing technology and
could one day allow researchers to print heart tissue.

"*Origami Structures*" -- Origami is the ancient Japanese art of paper
folding. To engineer Mary Frecker of Pennsylvania State University, it is
the future for designing tools that could be used in fields such as
medicine and space exploration.

"*Friction-Stir Welding*" -- Welding has long been used to join pieces of
metal together. At the University of North Texas, Rajiv Mishra is using a
form of welding in a new technology that can improve metal's strength,
toughness, and other properties. It could bring new opportunities to the
automotive and aircraft industries.

"*Motion Controller for Virtual Reality*" -- William Provancher of Tactical
Haptics has developed a device that combines the sense of touch with
technology. Called the "reactive grip," it allows the user to experience
the virtual world in a whole new way.

"*Micro-Fabrication for Cochlear Implants*" -- Angelique Johnson is the CEO
of MEMStim, a company innovating how electrode arrays in cochlear implants
are manufactured. Using automated micro-fabrication, instead of costly
hand-made manufacturing, Johnson is able to lower the cost of production,
allowing more people in need of implants to afford them.

"*Using Viruses to Make Batteries*" -- While most people see viruses as
harmful, MIT's Angela Belcher sees the future of energy. Belcher uses
viruses engineered in her laboratory to form nano-scale wires for tiny
batteries that could eventually be used to produce a wide range of
electronics at a lower cost.

I received a fortune teller in my mail box... curious considering that I
was asking you guys about them a couple of weeks ago. Anyway, it was a
holiday gift from Unicef: the gift of childhood memories. Instead of colors
or numbers, in the top flaps it mentions classic toys and games like
yo-yos, hide and seek, marbles, etc. Under each flap it has a little phrase
reminding us what the game meant for us when we were kids. Pretty nostalgic
; )

Here's a picture:

Excellent use of origami as publicity; especially since the fortune teller

at Cooper Union:

Chris Curro and Henry Wang of the Albert Nerken School of Engineering
describe the conventional cardboard box as “wasteful, hard to open, and
difficult to pack.” They designed an alternative box

called
the “rapid packing container,” which uses 15 percent less cardboard than a
conventional box and requires no tape, making it an environmentally
friendly alternative. The rapid packing container is assembled with what
they call a “rapid folding jig." Press the cardboard into the jig, and
presto: a new box whose design allows sealing with a single recyclable
adhesive. The box is also reversible, and can be reused with the label-free
side out.

argues that it is not that pig, unless the artist who did the drawing of

there is more than one Cerceda pig, also possible.

Am not finding the Yoshizawa pig in the ODB at all - but lots of his work

[Origami] Origami sighting, history, diagramming, for rehabilitation (1943)

2015-06-07 Thread Karen Reeds
I spotted a mention of origami in a posting on a history of the book
listserve [SHARP-L] tthat prompted a bit of historical research.

Peter D Verheyen mentioned origami in his posting (see below) about Ruth
Zechlin's Soldaten Werkbuch für Freizeit und Genesung (2nd ed., Otto
Maier, Ravensburg 1943). I found a copy of this Soldiers' workbook for
recreation and convalescence in the Princeton University Library and
thought I'd post a description.

Zechlin (1899-1966) published the first of her many handicrafts books for
children in 1931. New editions/translations were still coming out long
after her death.

The soldier's workbook groups paperfolding with a variety of other kinds of
puzzles. Zechlin gives diagrams and/or photos of six models for practical
things or to enclose in letters for fun (pp 37-42):

   - pentagon from a knotted strip of paper
   - traditional water-cup
   - magazine-cover box (out of a postcard. This little box stems from an
old pharmacy. Earlier it was used for holding powders, but now we use it
for as a container for pins and needles and it is also good as an ashtray.
It even holds water, so it can be used for a paintbox.)
   - a family of crows (sent in a military mail letter to amuse the
   children at home)
   - flapping bird (Swans, folded like the crows. Both are old Japanese
   folded models. )
   - the steamboat (this can also be sent in a letter. Smokestacks can
be cut and rolled out of paper, or one can also use cigarettes for
smokestacks. That would make a neat surprise for a comrade.) [This model
has a a couple extra folds at the end that I'd never seen before.]

I think the diagrams for the birds would be tricky to follow on their own.
Zechlin doesn't say that the Swan can flap its wings.

Other related crafts include making chess or checkers pieces from paper,
cardboard box-construction, bookbinding, basketry, folding a box from
birchbark, and weaving shoes out of strips of birchbark (as done by
country people in Finland and Norway).

The models illustrated in the book were made by the author and her students
in schools and hospitals. At the end of the book, there is an advertisement
for her Workbook for Girls, Activities for the Sick Child, and Happy
Nursery: a book for mother and child, along with other arts and crafts
books by other authors.

The diagrams use only short dashes to indicate folds and occasional arrows.

I've scanned the relevant pages and front/backmatter..

During WW II there was also Zechlin, Ruth. Soldaten Werkbuch für Freizeit

Genesung. Ravensburg: Otto Maier Verlag, 1943 (2nd ed). This continued to
 be
sold after the war with a label pasted over “Soldaten” so that it read
“Jungen” instead. Designed for convalescing soldiers and those on leave, it
starts off with instructions for making a Bett-tisch (bed table) for making
the quite complex projects on. These include wood working,
origami, bookbinding, dools, all manner of crafts really.

Surprised to see this kind of stunt by an insurance company...

Hundreds of origami dogs made out of U.K. banknotes were randomly placed in
the streets of London this week as part of a campaign to show how the
average person overpays on their life insurance.

The stunt was carried out by online life insurance provider with a team of
origami experts spending hours folding five hundred dogs out of £10 notes.

2015-03-29 Thread Dennis Walker
But I find myself wondering what the drawing *means*... does the drawing
represent a specific element of the book? Reading the review, some of the
other illustrations appear to refer to specific incidents, but there's no
mention of the fortune teller. Looked at one way, the drawing is of course a
literal interpretation of the title - but I wonder if that's because it's an
incident in the book (except you cannot actually fold a real clock, of
course) or is it some other reference. Maybe it refers to the book's
out-of-sequence diary structure: if you took a regular diary, and folded it
up somehow, it's as if you're folding time...

I wonder if, by using the clock face and the fortune teller, you could get two
times to link up by pressing them together :-) and be able to freely pass
between those two times.

Just musing on plot possibilities :-)

the drawing may be referring to the changing fortunes of time that would
be seen in a diary -
but, like so much in art...the creator so often allows for meaning to be
what it is to the consumer of the work

[Origami] Origami sighting -- Christmas Tree Napkin Fold, by Paige Russell, on Instructables

I hasten to share this while there's still time before the 12 days of
Christmas. It's a beautiful model and very well explained through the

I'd add this suggestion: For the steps where you have to flip the
partially-folded napkin over, slide 1 paper plate under the napkin and
another paper plate over it. That will make it easier to hold the model
together as you turn it.

Of course, no one at the table will want to unfold and use the elegant
napkins! Better have plain napkins on hand.
