I have a bunch of these monitors - love them.

The bandwidth required for the native resolution is > HDMI/DVI. If you want
to run the display at the native resolution you will need to use:

1. DisplayPort
2. Dual-Link DVI card and cable

Maybe better quality shipments in the US of A?

I've just looked at the dell oz website, and the 5 reviews of the screen.
build quality is criticized (2 people). Not a good sample of sales, I'm sure
- but it does alert one about possible 'mechanical' problems, independent of
the panels and electronics.

It's nice to finally see some monitors like this on the market. I've got a
30" Samsung at home 2560x1600 and at work I've got 2 x 17" monitors (plus
the laptop screen). Had monitors on order since I started here 3 months ago
and still don't have them. Internal ordering nightmare. Tempted to go and
buy one of these for myself to use at work. Sick of all those crappy
resolution monitors that do max height of 1080p. Don't want!

The 2560xanything res monitors have to have a graphics card that can do
dual-dvi. (or hdmi) output. Otherwise you can only get the 1920x1200 rez.
its a bandwidth thing of the graphics card. Might be the issue you are
getting Greg. What rez is it actually giving you? Is it the max of the
monitor, or the max of the graphics card? If its not the native rez of the
monitor then it will look crap.

Yep.

I've got 2 x 24" (1080) at one client site, and using them after the 27"
feels like I'm programming on a mobile phone (well... not quite).

I find the 27" to be pretty darn big, and I fear that the 30" would be
too much. Any word on that?

ಠ_ಠ

Government?

I don't want to play a game of "first world problems" but from a
productivity point of view over 3 months, dropping even $500 on 2 x 24"
would make a world of difference. Getting 2 x Dell 27" would also be a
"cheap" option.

thought an adjustment might be made - not so, Dell replaced it (with a used

The bandwidth limitation is the display interconnect.

Best bet for today is DisplayPort or Thunderbolt (the latter uses
DisplayPort for display signalling anyway AFAIK)

Dual-Link DVI != Dual DVI ports also HDMI does not have the bandwidth.

Otherwise you can only get the 1920x1200 rez. its a bandwidth thing of the

The bandwidth limitation is the display interconnect.

Best bet for today is DisplayPort or Thunderbolt (the latter uses DisplayPort

Our company bought the monitor (U2711) from Dell's website in Australia and
we found an online discount code which took about $250 off. Monitor is
about 1.5 years old and was originally about $950 but we paid around $700
for it. Also think that RACV membership gives you a discount from DELL as
well...

2012-03-14 Thread Greg Keogh
Hi Folks, sorry about replying to the wrong thread with the wrong title, but
it seems to have righted itself. Who would have thought that there are
different types of DVI cables?! Not me.

I just got home after 6 hours and found the replies. I found this Harris
item to be a surprising bargain, even cheaper than DELL:
http://www.ht.com.au/part/Y3355-Dell-UltraSharp-U2711-LCD-monitor-27/detail.
hts

Stephen has my real dream monitor, the DELL 30" with 2560 x 1600 res (do you
have it for graphics work as well?). I sat in front of one for a few minutes
last year and was gobsmacked by the lovely experience, but they're still
around the $1600AU range. I think getting 2560 x 1440 on the 27" is pretty
good, and I'm really enjoying it. It's so big I don't even need to maximize
VS2010 when I'm working, and I find I'm using the second monitor less. I
find that looking over at a second monitor too often is quite irritating, so
I love having more in front of me.

I have the DELL and LG 27 inch monitors side-by-side and I can see that the
colours are much richer on the DELL and the extra pixels create a razor
sharp impression. It has a lovely smooth tilt mechanism too.

Maybe this will make programming an enjoyable experience again (for a while
;-)

Cheers, Greg

You are indeed correct. There are some crazy resolutions supported in 1.4
4096×2160! (but only at 24 hz)

Another thing about the U series ultra sharps - if the 27inch monitor is
out of the range of anyone interested, their 23 inch equivalent is damned
cheap. We specified 115 of them for a client 240 each (the client paid well
under 200 given the qty).

You could also make a damned tidy work space with three of the 23 inch ones
and this:

I'm about to click the buy, then saw your email...
checked the price and Dell have theirs for $718.99 due to $180 off when
buying online. 20% off for 48 hours, deal ends today. (That link shows it
for $799)

Both have the 3 years warranty which you can increase to 5 with Dell (I'm
not going to it's another $180)

Yes, the 30" is awesome. The Dell is a slightly better model than the
Samsung due to it having HDMI input, Samsung monitor doesn't.
I've noticed a flickering lately on my Samsung at home. Perhaps I should
buy the Dell 30" instead, and then put the Samsung at work? Hmm... Nah...
its almost double the price. I'll upgrade it if it dies...

.Sick of all those crappy resolution monitors that do max height of 1080p.
Don't want!

Join the club. For a couple of years I had a BENQ 24" 1920 x 1080 monitor,
but then a local shop had a huge discount on the LG 27" so I rushed down to
get one. When I get home I wonder why everything looks a bit "grainy" and I
realise that I've simply bought a bigger screen with the same 1920 x 1080
resolution and woeful 1080 height. So whoopee! All I have is bigger pixels.
I stupidly didn't do enough research before buying.

Last week I was looking everywhere for a 1920 x 1200 screen for some extra
height, but normal shops don't carry them and I could only find DELL and HP
available for web ordering. In the end I gave up and decided on the U2711.
The 1080 height is a stupid limited standard, which I suppose is only
popular because people recognise it as being HD movie height.

It is just another interconnect standard. Looks very close to HDMI but with
three square corners and one bevelled one as opposed to two square corners
and two bevelled ones. There is a display port socket on the bottom of your
U2711 if you look.

If you already have the dual-link DVI cables in and working - there is no
benefit for you unless you want to use the audio ports on the monitor
(which can be a pain in the proverbial to get going depending on what your
GPU drivers decide to do re presenting it to Windows).

IMO an improved connector over DVI, in that it doesn't require doing
up fiddly screws. Thunderbolt cable & connector is even easier. (so
small, thin and flexible)

Plugged it into the DisplayPort on my port replicator and best resolution I

Tried it on the DVI port and thats even lower. 1920 x 1080.

Sure its way better than the two 17" monitors I was using. (which I managed
to get working, all 4 screens. lol 3 monitors and the laptop screen.)

Now if I can get to this magical 2560x1440 resolution I'll be in bliss. Why
doesnt the displayport give that rez? I thought it would. Is the cable only
a single displayport rather than the double that the port replicator has?
(the icon shows two plusses on it but the cable just shows a D).

Anyone have a D++ displayport cable they can look or know if theres a
difference?

thanks,

First time a driver update has given me something as sweet as 2560x1440. :)

Good grief, are you telling me that it was a driver update in your case to
get the 2560 x 1440 working?! That was the first thing I tried without
success before I discovered it was the DVI cable. My DELL U2711 has boosted
my productivity for sure over the last week. I very rarely maximise any
windows any more. Imagine how pissed off I was to find that DELL had a
sudden discount special $80 less than what I paid just two days after I get
mine from HT, it's like playing the stock market - Greg

P.S. The thing runs hot, feel the top of the screen.
