I'm waiting for something with more oomph than the Nokia Lumia 900 - the
hardware seems under-powered for 2012

RE: [OT] Windows phone recommendation

2012-04-24 Thread Mark Thompson
I've been really happy with the HTC Radar, having owned it for a few months
now. Definitely not the highest specced WP7.5 device around, but it suits
my needs and can be bought outright for a pretty reasonable price (I bought
mine through Expansys).

Front-facing camera on it is a nice novelty for a Windows Phone (and
possibly even useful now that Skype has been officially released!). 8Gb
(not expandable) on-board memory sounds a bit limiting by today's standards,
but it just means I have to be a bit selective about how much media I have
on it at any one time, and it's never really been a big issue for me.
Reliability has been excellent so far (touch wood), I think it has locked up
maybe once in the whole time I have owned it, and stuff 'just works' (once
you get used to the whole Metro experience and how to drive it fluently -
give yourself a week with it and you should be fine). It's fairly light,
screen is still nice and readable in direct sunlight, call quality is fine
(does anyone still use a smartphone to make phonecalls?). So yeah, depends
what you are looking for in a phone I guess - if a mid-range phone is not
out of the question then the Radar is definitely worth a look.

I've been using the lumia 800 for the last month and love it. The two real big
positives are the coverage is excellent (Telstra blue tick) and the screen is
beautiful and great outdoors.
I wouldn't call the hardware slow, not by a long shot. The single core running
at 1.4 is pretty sweet: there's not really multitasking or parallel processing
happening on windows phone or any phones for that matter, so slower speed dual
cores are somewhat over rated.
I've seen comparisons of web browser rendering speeds showing WP to be slower,
but in general usage I seem to smoke all the latest iPhone users...:)

Negatives are lack of tethering at present, waiting on a software update, no
4G, no front facing camera, and you're better off looking for moss on the side
of trees than using the compass. The 900 addresses all/most of those short
comings.

Oh, the Nokia maps are also cool.

Lol, I remember having 14 inch monitors with lower resolution ;)
I'm sure you could cram in more than 480 x 800, but I'm not sure you'd notice
it that much. At 2 AM this display still looks great to me. Anyway, if you
want more pixels you'll have to wait till WP 8.

If you can wait for the Nokia 930 it is meant to be really really good.

I’ve had a Lumia 920 for a while now, really nice. Wireless charging is great
too 😊 The 930 is coming to Aus pretty soon I think…

I have a Nokia Lumia 920 - I would prefer one with an SD card, and the better
camera that the 930 has. The 1520 appeals.

Hey Tom,

I’ve had the 920 which I loved and then upgraded to the 1020 for the awesome
camera. The only thing I would like to add to the 1020 is wireless charging but
the Nokia charging sleeve works well for that task.

Like most other recommendations, I’d suggest you keep an eye out for the 930.

Cheers
