Hi all, could anyone tell me the layout of the sockets at the back of the SB

managed to get them working quietly, and only through 1 channel. Which
socket should I be using, and (like the line

There is a gospel music station. It is somewhere in the fifties probably
54. Sirius has more sports coverage than XM, in fact that's why I switched.
I don't know that there is a lot of difference in the music streams, but
there are more info and sports streams on Sirius. Trouble is you can only
stream the music channels. If you have a broadband connection Sirius is
offering a three day free trial of the music streams.

Subject: Sirius Radio and XM; what I like

  Hello, everyone!

Well, I've had my Sirius on since around
12:30 pm Pacific Time yesterday. Here
  are some of my observations:

I like both services; XM continues to be
my favorite and top choice. I'll keep
  'em both after all.

XM: Radio Classics has a host and I like
the information he gives about the shows
and the actors, actresses, whether or
not they are still with us. I exchange
anemail with him from time to time.
He's nice. Wish they would not
interrupt the shows, but what can you
do? More otr on XM while Sirius runs
the same few shows every couple of
hours; they don't split the shows in
half, but run a commercial or two and
play a piece or two of music in between
their lineup of otr; no host on Retro
Radio, as Sirius calls their channel.
(Can't use the same names for the
channels, I guess because of copyright
  reason.)

  XM: More Decades than Sirius
  Sirius: Sirius Gold, 60's Vibrations,
Totally 70's, Big 80's, The Pulse
grouped together. There is an Elvis
  channel that plays everything Elvis
Presley ever recorded and it is the
  official station of Graceland.

XM: There is only one religious channel
Family Talk, and two christian music
  channels, The Fish and Spirit.

  Sirius: Spirit, Praise, Wisdom, EWTN,
Word are represented and there are a
couple more religious channels which are
  hispanic.

  XM: SonicTheater
Sirius: No modern radio drama or books
  there

  XM and Sirius:
Talk radio left, right and center

Sirius: NPR and NPR talk; Court TV Radio
Plus; Out Q for gays, lesbians, and
other folks (if you're supersensitive to
this, avoid that channel if you don't
  have an open mind.)

  XM and Sirius:
XM: The Joint plays reggae music all the
  time
  Sirius: Reggae Rhythms

Both have different types of rock
  channels including alternative, hiphop
  and hard to heavy metal

Sirius: Hair nation, 80's hair bands (I
don't know what that is. It's a strange
  name for music.)

XM and Sirius: Easy listening, love
  songs and mellow

  XM and Sirius:
  XM The Village, folk music
  Sirius: Folk Town

  Both have blues and bluegrass

  Both have commercial-free music
  channels.

  XM: On Broadway
  Sirius: Brodway's Best

The classical music channels are grouped
  together on both services.

  Sound quality between the two:
  Excellent.

Comment on receiver look and feel:
XM is smaller and lighter; uses bulky
heavy box adapter for boombox accessory,
bigger and heavier than the one for the
  home kit; really cumbersome.

Sirius: Home kit is chunkier, slightly
larger and receiver is chunky and
antenna feels a bit thicker and a little
  heavier than the XM.

Sirius: Runs on regular 3-prong plug
connected to a power supply which comes
  with the unit.

  Inaccessible features:
  As far as visually impaired:
  Screen readout; clock, timer, (sleep
timer); have not played with presets yet
on Sirius unit. Might later by
  accident, who knows?

  Comment: detented tuning knob

Each station is a click on the dial.

Sirius: Very audible pop when turning on
or off. Probably nothing to it, just
  letting you know it's working.

XM: Less audible pop when turned on but
  that's normal.

  Remote

Re: Cool Edit Pro version 2.0 versus 2.1

2004-07-18 Thread Kevin Stork
That is correct, in terms of current products. However, while obsolete,
the earlier CEP versions still work quite satisfactorily for many people
from what I hear. Both versions 2.0 and 2.1 are readily available on e-bay
and perhaps from software liquidators or remainder houses.

I am relatively sure that for my needs, probably any version of CEP is
sufficient and suitable, and may be available more cheaply than
Audition. But I am curious about version differences, nonetheless, and
that is why I was asking any who are familiar with both CEP 2.0 and 2.1 if
they know what the differences are. (I am pretty sure that version 2.1 was
the last upgrade before Adobe bought Syntrillium. Not sure, though, if
when Adobe re-branded CEP they added or deleted capability -- or
whatever! For all I know, they could have rewritten it completely by now.)

Thanks,
Kevin

Thanks Mimi and others,
Based on your positive remarks and having held off as long as I could I,
too, have taken the plunge and ordered my XM PCR today. Mine is coming via
ground shipping so don't anticipate seeing it for over a week. Will let you
know how it goes. I was also very grateful for the inadvertent posting of
the text channel line-up to this list. In the meantime, can someone tell me
if there are Jaws scripts for the PCR software and if so where these can be

Hi Mimi,

After reading your posts and talking with others, I ordered the XM Radio
PCR yesterday. I am suppose to get it on Tuesday. I see that I will have to
activate it and plan to do that online. The activation FAQ says that I can
select chanel 0 and get the receiver id. Does this work with Window-Eyes?
Will I need sighted help or can I do it all with the screen reader? Any
thing that you are aware of that I should watch for?

Also, I have looked a little bit at the program schedule on xm-radio.com.
Is that the best place to find out what is on when? Is the program guide
pretty accessible?

Thank you so much for all of your help. I am excited about getting started
with satellite radio.

Yes, this is what happens. You can resume at a specific spot (all
files have a resume point held in memory for them), and you can put
bookmarks in files at any point. The two are separate. That is, there is a
temporary bookmark for each file where it's been stopped, as well as
permanent bookmarks which can be put at specific places and removed.

Also, the BC mentioned having an update feature for updating the
software. Nothing was specifically said about this for the BP,

No, the BP's firmware and software can be updated easily. When you
start the program, it can check for updates automatically or you can hit
the
check updates button, as you wish. Both software and firmware updates are
 checked for and downloaded.
I, too, wish there was a unit with Eloquence. However, if you're
willing to put up with delay (I'm not), you can buy an MP3 player, convert
your text files to MP3 with one of the converters, and have eloquence
reading your texts to you. As I said, though, this process does take a few
minutes per book, as well as resulting in files which take up more space
 than text files.

 Hi.
 Jeff wrote
You mentioned resuming in mp3 files. Are you saying that the
BookPort will remember where you stop listening to an mp3 file and
start at that spot when you resume listening?

Yes, this is what happens. You can resume at a specific spot (all
files have a resume point held in memory for them), and you can put
bookmarks in files at any point. The two are separate. That is, there is a
temporary bookmark for each file where it's been stopped, as well as
permanent bookmarks which can be put at specific places and removed.

Also, the BC mentioned having an update feature for updating the
software. Nothing was specifically said about this for the BP,
although I realize it can be done. Is it more difficult to update
software/firmware on the BP than on the BC?

No, the BP's firmware and software can be updated easily. When you
start the program, it can check for updates automatically or you can hit
the
check updates button, as you wish. Both software and firmware updates are
 checked for and downloaded.
I, too, wish there was a unit with Eloquence. However, if you're
willing to put up with delay (I'm not), you can buy an MP3 player, convert
your text files to MP3 with one of the converters, and have eloquence
reading your texts to you. As I said, though, this process does take a few
minutes per book, as well as resulting in files which take up more space
 than text files.

Yes, Debbie, I appreciate your comments. I do have a couple more
  questions about the BookPort.

Actually, I'm not a subscriber of audible.com yet, but I have been
contemplating it for quite some time. One of my reasons for doing so
would be to have books I could listen to with one of these types of
players. However, I have read about the various formats and would
probably want to use format 4 anyway. I am somewhat particular about
quality and usually prefer to get the highest quality I can, so this
would not be an issue for me.

If you have any other comments about either of these devices or other
similar products I'd be interested. I really, really wish there was a
  unit like this with Eloquence.

Are most of the books available in format 4?
