Re: Total Recorder playback volume
I've increased the computer mic volume with no success. When ever I try to record Jaws speech or anything with the line in, the play back volume is very low. I've checked the levels in volume control, and I can't discover why the play back volume should be so low. It is not just a little low, but very low. It worked fine on my old computer with Windows ME, but since putting total recorder on my new machine, I haven't been able to get it to record properly. Skype and two sound cards
Hi Folks anyone here familiar with the options in Skype? I'm trying to put audio in and audio out through two different sound cards. I see the combo boxes for both but if I reset one, it seems to reset them all, audio in, audio out and ring. Is there a way of setting them individually, or is it actually setting it individually but speech is showing they're all the same, if that makes sense. Accessing the combo boxes is a bit peculiar anyway, you have to bring the mouse to the combo box, then cursor down to what you want, but you can only read it with the mouse. So I do the first one, audio out, say, and that's set. If I then move to the second, audio in, say, I find that set to the same, so I change that to the other card, go back a box and behold, that box is now set to the other card. How can I set them individually? Help would be appreciated. Re: Cd recorder that can make copies of CD's
There is no way anyone can tell a blind person if a CD recorder will be accessible to them. The only thing I have found useful and accessible is the CD burner program and the use of a burner on the computer. I had a bad deal with a stand-alone recorder and took it back to the store only to be told there was nothing wrong with it. After I bought a CD burner two years ago I discovered why the stand-alone does not record: The record tray is in the wrong side of the machine. That's right: The wrong side. There is no way I can fix that, and to take it somewhere else to get that fixed, they'll charge you $75 before they even open it up. I think it's ridiculous. I called Aiwa to tell them I have a defective stand-alone recorder, and nobody believes me. It is not accessible to a blind person, and I had those people tell me several times how to do this and do that to get it to record, but it's no good if the record tray is in the wrong side of the machine to begin with. That's why I'll never buy anything at Fry's Electronics anymore. But I also realize it could have happened somewhere else. So, I just use it as a backup CD player. Anyone working in any electronics store would not know if everything would be accessible or useful for a blind person. Unfortunately, you have to check it out yourself and probably lose money in the long run. I lost $250 on this rotten deal. If I had known I should have gotten a CD burner in the first place for the computer, I would not have monkeyed around with a stand-alone. Hi, Per the Turtle Beach Santa Cruz, I have included excerpts from users who praise that card. Yet they have been using Santa Cruz for a long time. What is the experience of T B card users using a newer computer with XP Home and JAWS 4.5 and newer JAWS versions, for example, using free computer-based long distance services? I ask this as many new computers are soldw ith onboard sound--which works fine for me. I wonder if any one got a Dell with onboard sound and preferred the T B cards? Re: Sound editors pound for pound?
Gary, Not sure, but I think that the burn rate is more dependent on your processor speed than the size of your hard drive or other factors. For example, I'm running Windows 98 with an Athelon processor and I think the burn rate is something like 52x if I remember ... whatever it is, I know it's pretty fast. I'm sure someone else can correct me, but I think that the default in Nero is to go for the maximum burn rate so if you are burning successfully I wouldn't think you would really need to slow it down. Also, to the new member who was asking about Nero, I know that John Wilson in the UK has done tutorials on Nero and probably some of the sound editors also. While I have not purchased these, the info on his website suggests that they are pretty thorough, so you might go there if you cannot get your questions answered elsewhere. Jim, Okay, pleading ignorance here, smile, I know nothing about the Delta soundcards. Seems that the ones I always hear recommended are either some flavor of Soundblaster or Turtle Beach, so what is different about the delta card and how do I know if I want one? How does it compare pricewise to the others and does it eliminate the pesky crackling in XP that I keep hearing about? Since I have not gotten into serious sound editing but may someday, I'm not sure how much accessibility I need in the sound card control panel. Re: Cd recorder that can make copies of CD's
Hi All, The way you solve this problem is to explain to the salesman that he/she can't possibly know what it's going to take for you to be able to use the specific piece of equipment. Insist on at least 30 days to experiment with it in your home under your particular conditions and circumstances, and make sure you can return it if it is either inaccessable or does not live up to your expectations. I have a stand-alone Tascam cd burner, which is very accessable and works very well. However, it does not copy as it has only one tray but I get great recordings of my vinyl with it and I can then copy on the computer. It was rather expensive though, but it's a very good unit. Re: Help Request For Total Recorder
Hi Tom, I think you will have trouble getting TR to reliably record streaming audio as long as you are using software speech. There are a number of factors involved including the need to use the Total Recorder driver in software mode. I am not clear on whether you have been successful at recording in real time, as it were, because if you have been able to do so then presumably the scheduling parameters have not been set up correctly and hopefully others can help you with this, because I have heard that it can be done but never got to that point myself. Unfortunately, I was using it successfully for almost a year then suddenly started developing driver conflicts that I could not work around, so at present I have uninstalled it and do not think I could really help you from memory. Re: Sound editors pound for pound?
I had to slow mine down to 32x after losing so many discs to incomplete burns. The guy I talked to at Radio Shack told me that my computer is slow and that the burner I have is better on a faster system than on mine. When I figured that the slower burn rate resulted in more complete discs than the faster rate, I felt better about it, because I would hate to have to throw out so many discs when making them. On the faster burn, I was losing five discs to every one. That's a pretty high ratio. On the slower speed, it has cut way down. It's clear I'll be needing a more up-to-date computer, and will have to buy a new one anyway. Mimi - Original Message - From: "Susan Wojtecki" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "PC audio discussion list. To my knowledge, most people don't have much luck with software speech on Delta cards. I'm not clear at all on the technical reasons for this. Re: Delta cards.
Hi: I agree fully with you. I think the problem is that the sampling rate of speech software is simply too low for the delta cards to work properly. They can also cause problems with apps such as Windows Messanger. That's why I use an Audigy 2 Value card for standard voice over IP apps and computer speech and leave my delta soundcard for music apps. I'mASpeaker, How Many Models?
I just bought the TDK I'mASpeaker. I thought the sound would be in stereo. It seems the jack on the speaker turns the sound from a portable CD player from stereo to mono. The manual doesn't say specifically if it is stereo or mono. Although it has a good loud sound, I am disappointed that it isn't actually a stereo device. Re: Cd recorder that can make copies of CD's
have had 2 stand alone burners and have used them successfully. 1 was a classic which I bought at Circuit City, and a Sony machine which is similar in operation to the way Sony home mini disc machines operate. I don't recall the model number of the Sony, but you can dub a disc, record from a tape machine and a digital source such as toslink or spdif. -- "mimi" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: There is no way anyone can tell a blind person if a CD recorder will be accessible to them. Hi, Jerry, Which sound card is fully accessible with speech? If I mess up something on the Soundblaster Live and don't know how to set it back, I have to take it to the shop to have it reset or have someone else come to the house to help me get it right. But, I have not done that in a long time now, because I know better. Mimi - Original Message - From: "Jerry Richer" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "PC audio discussion list. Re: Cd recorder that can make copies of CD's
I realize perhaps not everybody got a raw deal like I did. It just happened to me and I deeply regret the money wasted. Sure wish people would believe me when I tell them the equipment is not put together right. Hey, I'm not making this up. The record tray in the Aiwa stand-alone machine I have is indeed in the wrong side, and the tray without the holes that the burner must burn the disc through is in the player, lefthand side of the unit. I simply do not know how to put the tray in the right place without breaking something else on it, and I'm not going to pay the ridiculous charges those repair places charge. I just don't know anybody who could straighten it out so now I've had the burner in the computer for two years, I'm not worried about it anymore. I do everything I wanted to do on the stand-alone on the computer instead. Mimi - Original Message - From: "Gary G. That's kinda true. I have installed the product numbers of times. However if they believe that you are genuine in your request to reinstall after the number of activations has passed they will reactivate the product for you. I have even had them provide misplaced serial numbers for me after a hard drive failure. Additionally their technical support is absolutely first rate. Recently I had difficulty reinstalling/reactivating. Their technical support sorted out the problem for me after about 6 emails.
