Re: Total Recorder playback volume

2004-10-09 Thread Dawn Yerton
I've increased the computer mic volume with no success. When ever I try to
record Jaws speech or anything with the line in, the play back volume is
very low. I've checked the levels in volume control, and I can't discover
why the play back volume should be so low. It is not just a little low, but
very low. It worked fine on my old computer with Windows ME, but since
putting total recorder on my new machine, I haven't been able to get it to
record properly.

I am using Total Recorder 45 professional with Windows XP and Jaws 51.
I am trying to record Jaws reading a WordPad document. I have sound
board
checked in total recorder. It does the recording, but the volume is very
low when I playback the recording.

Is there something I can change to bring this volume up higher.

Skype and two sound cards

2004-10-09 Thread Chrissie
Hi Folks

anyone here familiar with the options in Skype? I'm trying to put audio in
and audio out through two different sound cards. I see the combo boxes for
both but if I reset one, it seems to reset them all, audio in, audio out and
ring. Is there a way of setting them individually, or is it actually
setting it individually but speech is showing they're all the same, if that
makes sense. Accessing the combo boxes is a bit peculiar anyway, you have
to bring the mouse to the combo box, then cursor down to what you want, but
you can only read it with the mouse. So I do the first one, audio out, say,
and that's set. If I then move to the second, audio in, say, I find that
set to the same, so I change that to the other card, go back a box and
behold, that box is now set to the other card. How can I set them
individually? Help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Regards to all

You need to make sure that you have software, and not the sound board option
checked under the recording options. You will also want to check the record
also input stream internet telephony only check box. You can also choose to

But it's still not recording the audio stream either; it did, however, pick

Re: Cd recorder that can make copies of CD's

2004-10-09 Thread mimi
There is no way anyone can tell a blind
person if a CD recorder will be
accessible to them. The only thing I
have found useful and accessible is the
CD burner program and the use of a
burner on the computer. I had a bad
deal with a stand-alone recorder and
took it back to the store only to be
told there was nothing wrong with it.
After I bought a CD burner two years ago
I discovered why the stand-alone does
not record: The record tray is in the
wrong side of the machine. That's
right: The wrong side. There is no way
I can fix that, and to take it somewhere
else to get that fixed, they'll charge
you $75 before they even open it up. I
think it's ridiculous. I called Aiwa to
tell them I have a defective stand-alone
recorder, and nobody believes me. It is
not accessible to a blind person, and I
had those people tell me several times
how to do this and do that to get it to
record, but it's no good if the record
tray is in the wrong side of the machine
to begin with. That's why I'll never
buy anything at Fry's Electronics
anymore. But I also realize it could
have happened somewhere else. So, I
just use it as a backup CD player.
Anyone working in any electronics store
would not know if everything would be
accessible or useful for a blind person.
Unfortunately, you have to check it out
yourself and probably lose money in the
long run. I lost $250 on this rotten
deal. If I had known I should have
gotten a CD burner in the first place
for the computer, I would not have
monkeyed around with a stand-alone.

Info on TurtleBeach cards

Per the Turtle Beach Santa Cruz, I have included excerpts from users who
praise that card. Yet they have been using Santa Cruz for a long time.

What is the experience of T B card users using a newer computer with XP

computer-based long distance services?
I ask this as many new computers are soldw ith onboard sound--which works

I wonder if any one got a Dell with onboard sound and preferred the T B

Or did any one choose to bypass the Santa Crus and use onboard sound or

Re: Sound editors pound for pound?

2004-10-09 Thread Susan Wojtecki
Gary,
Not sure, but I think that the burn rate is more dependent on your processor
speed than the size of your hard drive or other factors. For example, I'm
running Windows 98 with an Athelon processor and I think the burn rate is
something like 52x if I remember ... whatever it is, I know it's pretty
fast. I'm sure someone else can correct me, but I think that the default in
Nero is to go for the maximum burn rate so if you are burning successfully I
wouldn't think you would really need to slow it down.

Also, to the new member who was asking about Nero, I know that John Wilson
in the UK has done tutorials on Nero and probably some of the sound editors
also. While I have not purchased these, the info on his website suggests
that they are pretty thorough, so you might go there if you cannot get your
questions answered elsewhere. Let me know if you are interested and I'll

Re: Delta cards.

2004-10-09 Thread Susan Wojtecki
Jim,
Okay, pleading ignorance here, smile, I know nothing about the Delta
soundcards. Seems that the ones I always hear recommended are either some
flavor of Soundblaster or Turtle Beach, so what is different about the delta
card and how do I know if I want one? How does it compare pricewise to the
others and does it eliminate the pesky crackling in XP that I keep hearing
about? Since I have not gotten into serious sound editing but may someday,
I'm not sure how much accessibility I need in the sound card control panel.
Answers to these and similar questions much appreciated, and just when I
thought I knew a little, sigh. Many thanks.

Re: Cd recorder that can make copies of CD's

2004-10-09 Thread Kristine Hickerson
Hi All,

The way you solve this problem is to explain to the salesman that he/she
can't possibly know what it's going to take for you to be able to use the
specific piece of equipment. Insist on at least 30 days to experiment with
it in your home under your particular conditions and circumstances, and make
sure you can return it if it is either inaccessable or does not live up to
your expectations.

I have a stand-alone Tascam cd burner, which is very accessable and works
very well. However, it does not copy as it has only one tray but I get
great recordings of my vinyl with it and I can then copy on the computer.
It was rather expensive though, but it's a very good unit.

told there was nothing wrong with it.
After I bought a CD burner two years ago
I discovered why the stand-alone does
not record: The record tray is in the
wrong side of the machine. That's
right: The wrong side. There is no way
I can fix that, and to take it somewhere
else to get that fixed, they'll charge
you $75 before they even open it up. I
think it's ridiculous. I called Aiwa to
tell them I have a defective stand-alone
recorder, and nobody believes me. It is
not accessible to a blind person, and I
had those people tell me several times
how to do this and do that to get it to
record, but it's no good if the record
tray is in the wrong side of the machine
to begin with. That's why I'll never
buy anything at Fry's Electronics
anymore. But I also realize it could
have happened somewhere else. So, I
just use it as a backup CD player.
Anyone working in any electronics store
would not know if everything would be
accessible or useful for a blind person.
Unfortunately, you have to check it out
yourself and probably lose money in the
long run. I lost $250 on this rotten
deal. If I had known I should have
gotten a CD burner in the first place
for the computer, I would not have
monkeyed around with a stand-alone.

Re: Help Request For Total Recorder

2004-10-09 Thread Susan Wojtecki
Hi Tom,
I think you will have trouble getting TR to reliably record streaming audio
as long as you are using software speech. There are a number of factors
involved including the need to use the Total Recorder driver in software
mode. I am not clear on whether you have been successful at recording in
real time, as it were, because if you have been able to do so then
presumably the scheduling parameters have not been set up correctly and
hopefully others can help you with this, because I have heard that it can be
done but never got to that point myself. Unfortunately, I was using it
successfully for almost a year then suddenly started developing driver
conflicts that I could not work around, so at present I have uninstalled it
and do not think I could really help you from memory.

winamp question

2004-10-09 Thread Ray Slaton
Hi folks,
I am trying to play a file that apparently is suppose to be listened to
with real audio but everytime I click on the file winamp pops up and all I
hear is a sh sh sh sh sh sound.

Is there a way to play real audio content through winamp or how can I make
real player be the prefered player rather than winamp?
Thinks.

the site I am on is

www.neilrogers.com

and under show archives that is what I am trying to listen to.
Thanks.

Re: Sound editors pound for pound?

2004-10-09 Thread mimi
I had to slow mine down to 32x after
losing so many discs to incomplete
burns. The guy I talked to at Radio
Shack told me that my computer is slow
and that the burner I have is better on
a faster system than on mine. When I
figured that the slower burn rate
resulted in more complete discs than the
faster rate, I felt better about it,
because I would hate to have to throw
out so many discs when making them. On
the faster burn, I was losing five discs
to every one. That's a pretty high
ratio. On the slower speed, it has cut
way down. It's clear I'll be needing a
more up-to-date computer, and will have
to buy a new one anyway.

To my knowledge, most people don't have much luck with software speech
on Delta cards. I'm not clear at all on the technical reasons for this.
You would think that a card costing several hundreds of dollars would do
software speech but it isn't always the case. I have two higher end USB
sound cards. One handles speech fine and the other is useless. Great for

Re: Delta cards.

2004-10-09 Thread Jim Noseworthy
Hi:
I agree fully with you. I think the problem is that the sampling rate of
speech software is simply too low for the delta cards to work properly.
They can also cause problems with apps such as Windows Messanger. That's why
I use an Audigy 2 Value card for standard voice over IP apps and computer
speech
and leave my delta soundcard for music apps.

Cheers.

I'mASpeaker, How Many Models?

I just bought the TDK I'mASpeaker. I thought the sound would be in stereo.
It seems the jack on the speaker turns the sound from a portable CD player
from stereo to mono. The manual doesn't say specifically if it is stereo or
mono. Although it has a good loud sound, I am disappointed that it isn't
actually a stereo device. Any comments or suggestions as to another model
or something?

Re: Cd recorder that can make copies of CD's

2004-10-09 Thread mimi
I realize perhaps not everybody got a
raw deal like I did. It just happened
to me and I deeply regret the money
wasted. Sure wish people would believe
me when I tell them the equipment is not
put together right. Hey, I'm not making
this up. The record tray in the Aiwa
stand-alone machine I have is indeed in
the wrong side, and the tray without the
holes that the burner must burn the disc
through is in the player, lefthand side
of the unit. I simply do not know how
to put the tray in the right place
without breaking something else on it,
and I'm not going to pay the ridiculous
charges those repair places charge. I
just don't know anybody who could
straighten it out so now I've had the
burner in the computer for two years,
I'm not worried about it anymore. I do
everything I wanted to do on the
stand-alone on the computer instead.

Re: Delta cards.

2004-10-09 Thread Susan Wojtecki
Jerry,
If I were to do this, I would want to configure one card to run JAWS
exclusively with the other for everything else, is this doable? Any
recommendations on which ones will play nicely together and/or can anyone
either give me or point me to the how-to on configuring them? Hope the
question makes sense.

Susan

easy cd creator

2004-10-09 Thread Kurt E. Yount
Well, I guess easy CD extractor is $29.00 which I would pay if I could
get it to work, but I can't make it convert anything. It keeps saying
convert unavailable. I don't know what to do. Any suggestions? I get
the digest, so if answers came in before I haven't seen them yet. Kurt

Re: Sound editors pound for pound?

2004-10-09 Thread Lou Novath
Thanks, Shawn.
I can probably afford Nero this month, but something like Sound Forge would
have to wait until late spring/ early summer of 05. Is it true that Sound
Forge has some kind of copy protection that prohibits you from installing it
onto your computer more than three times?

Best,

Hi, welcome to the list. This list certainly covers
all those topics. I can answer your question about
gold wave. Just put your start marker at the beginning
of the section you want to copy by pressing the left
bracket, to the right of p. Then listen until you get
to the end of what you want to copy, place your finish
marker there with the right bracket. Then simply hit
control c to copy to the clipboard. Control a to bring
the whole sound back in to focus if you want. Well, on
your other point, if you can afford sound forge, get
it, wish I could. I've never used it, but I know some
very knowledgeable guys who have used both. I
understand that the noise reduction is far superior,
and you can get rid of plosives without blurring the
sound.

Hi, everybody.
New list member here. I heard about this list from
GW Micro. Is this list intended
to help blind users cope with things the sound
editing program manuals don't cover?
For instance, how to select a portion of a wave file
using accessibility keys, or,
which of the sound editors, pound for pound, allows
a blind user to get the most
out of the sound editing program via screen reader?
If not, please let me know,
and I'll bail out now.
But if so, perhaps someone will tell me:
1. How to select a portion of a wave file in Gold
Wave for copying to the clipboard.
2. Whether the help window in Nero 6 is easy to
use.
3. Whether Nero's accessibility features will let a
user get the most out of the
program, and, whether the accessibility features are
contained in the documentation.
4. Most importantly, which sound editor beats the
others out in terms of quality,
ease of use, and degree of screen reader/ short cut
key accessibility.
Thanks for your kind attention and, if applicable,
your advice.

Re: Sound editors pound for pound?

2004-10-09 Thread Andrea Sherry
That's kinda true. I have installed the product numbers of times. However if
they believe that you are genuine in your request to reinstall after the
number of activations has passed they will reactivate the product for you. I
have even had them provide misplaced serial numbers for me after a hard
drive failure. Additionally their technical support is absolutely first
rate. Recently I had difficulty reinstalling/reactivating. Their technical
support sorted out the problem for me after about 6 emails.
Cheers
