The "Bose sound" was disappointing. No high frequency extension and
dropouts over the frequency range. I can't get figures from Bose, they
don't publish them, so this is subjective. I took a cd and listened to
some music and I came to the above unsubstantiated claim.

For computer speakers they are not that bad, but I think Cambridge is
cheaper and sounds a bit better. Not HiFi though.

The Logitech range is not bad. Good value for money, but worse than
Cambridge. Good for games and movies, suffers if you are listening to
jazz or classical music. Ok for rock, fine for techno.

Do you want 2, 2.1 or 5.1 sound? How much money do you want to spend?
How much space have you got? Do you want to listen to music, does
fidelity matter? If you are listening to mp3's mostly, there is no
point in forking out large amounts of money for HiFi computer equipment.

I pipe my flac's to the DAC on my Receiver that drives my large system.
Fantastic for quality.

I also have a $80 set of Chinese junk 5.1 speakers that is stacked
around my PC for playing games.

Go and listen to lots of speakers. Take you own cd. Most sound demo's
are rigged.

Actually, the proper term is convert, you don't actually record anything
when you convert one file format to another.
But just keep in mind hat if you convert, you may lose quality slightly in
the conversion process.

In the past discussions of the CCrane transmitter, people have described a
small screw on the back of the unit which can be adjusted to increase its
rane. I have recently acquired one of these transmitters only to find
very
limited range and nothing on the back that fits this description. There's
no tape covering a small screw, only flat metal with writing on it and, of
course, the battery compartment. So I'm wondering if anyone knows whether
the company has modified the product and if so whether there is another
way
to increase the range. Any thoughts or information will be much
appreciated, as I haven't gotten more than a range of 20 feet maximum.

I've taken a rather long look at the freeware editor called wave pad
from:
http://nch.com.au/index.html
And I am most impressed. This editor is quite full featured and it will
load cd tracks as well as mp3 and wave formats. it may load other
formats
as well but I can't say for sure. It has all kinds of features from
pitch
adjustments to mixing sounds together to adding effects such as echo and
reverb. Press the space bar where you want to insert another sound or
file
if you want to mix. There are tons and tons of other features and for a
freeware tool I give this one a 10. It's outstanding. One of the most
Unique features of this editor is it's ability to use TTS or Text To
Speech. In other words you can open the TTS part of the editor and type
in
what you want it to say and mix that on top of your sound or music. It's

so
cool.

Best way is to use a backup program like dvd shrink. Only thing with
that is if you back the whole dvd you stand a chance of losing quality
because it has to compress everything. DVD Shrink allows you to choose
to backup just the movie and you can pick which audio streams. This in
a way is good for blind people because by getting rid of the menus you
can play your dvd movie from the backup and not worry about complex
menus in case they are complex in any case.

Real-time MIDI Quantization

2005-01-24 Thread Matthew Russell
I'm looking for a software or hardware solution, if
software preferably something with very little CPU
utilization (ie. a standalone app, not a full blown
sequencing program) that can quantize incoming MIDI
notes in real-time.

For example, somebody playing a keyboard MIDI
controller would have their notes quantized to quarter
notes at 140bpm and those notes would then trigger a
synth.

Anyone know of a solution?

Thanks.

Hi Kevin,
Welcome to the list.
In answer to your question, yes.
Simply open the file with GoldWave, then, from the file menu,
select, save as, and choose mp3 from the list.
That will do it.

Hi Fred,
Disk spanning is basically where all data won't fit on one disk it is
continued onto another disk.
I know that for example, some movies come on more than one disk.
And I use Nero for my disk burning operations, and it does support disk
spanning.

My suggestion is to use something like Gold Wave or Wave Pad. Rip the
track as a wave file, then you can edit the track to your preference. If
you have access to Sound Forge, I'd recommend that one over the other two,
but it is quite a bit more expensive.

Plus there is a free cd ripper and burner. I've not tried these out yet, but,

It doesn't seem that you can do this with Wave pad. You will need a
program
like soundforge which will let you work with a single chanel.

It's

so
cool.

larger capacity DVD's? I am using a DVD ROM and a DVD-RW in the same PC

If you need a complete backup you need a double layer burner. If you
jst want a copy wich containts sound and text in your language you
can use DVD Shrink. This program removes copy protection,
regioncodes and all unwanted language and text track. It means that
a 9 GB disc to a 4.7 GB disc. I use this program and it works very
fine here. I double layer burner but here in Denmark doublelayer
disc is very expensive.

Re: Panasonic Accessible Products

2005-01-24 Thread nick G
Believe it or not, Panasonic makes personal computers under the panasonic
and toshiba names. Now in case your wondering, here is the Toshiba Chain.
Toshiba, is owned by Matsushita, which is owned by Panasonic. I say
that Toshiba laptops are very good for doing audio on.

This thread is drifting off topic. Unless Panasonic makes Personal
Computers, this really isn't related to PC Audio, and a discussion of
general accessibility certainly is not. Please keep your messages
related to PC audio.

sound forge 7.0 and emu1820 professional sound card

2005-01-24 Thread Nick Gawronski
Hi, I am using an emu1820 professional level sound card and was wondering if
sound forge 7.0 supports asio in addition to wdm drivers and also if there
is an accessible application for window eyes 5.0 professional on windows xp
sp2 professional that will allow me to change settings for the emu card
because emu did not know of a program and does any one else on this list
have this card and could they email me a session with all of the inputs
selected and going to the wdm drivers so I can currently not use the
soundcard with soundforge 6.0 and also does the emu1820 support the
recording of what comes out of the card like sound blaster cards do? Is
there an emu1820 driver for fedora core 3 linux with speakup so I can use
playback and recorder programs under linux? bye

what can any one tell me about the total accessibility of nero's cd and dvd
writing products, using jaws 5.10?

I just got a new drive by lite-on, and it has OEM versions of nero six and
Power DVD 5.

is any one using nero OEM versions and power DVD???
I again, am using jaws 5.10.
is there any need for any scripting tools in order to use the nero or power
dvd products??

I am coming across from using roxio version five CD recording software, and
loved its performance, however the lite-on drive comes with nero.

any help at all, would be greatly appreciated, concerning nero and power dvd
information, as it relates to screen reading technology.

if any one has any tips on using ahead nero six and power dvd, with a screen
reader, please don't be shy, feel free to fill up my inbox.

Do you mean the contacts and stuff like that?

Though you can see the folder(s) when the ipod is connected to the
computer
you wouldn't be able to use the menus anyway when it isn't connected. So
I
guess the answer is not really.

hi, i've noticed this same thing in just about any player i've tried! i
too
have fiddled with every volume control i can find and it's no better. i
have
noticed though, if i rip the audio from a dvd, the volume of the resulting
mp3 or which ever format, is much higher than it was when just playing it.

When I play a DVD movie I notice that the volume is somewhat down. Is this
normal? I have had a poke round through the configuration menu and there
doesn't appear to be a way to increase the volume either in Nero Showtime
or
PowerDVD.

Subject: RE: Apple Ipod Shuffle accessible?

Hi Chris,

I got an ipod just after Christmas and -- with a little help from some
listers -- I am able to transfer music and manage it once it's on the
ipod.

I bought a program called Anapod explorer (from a company called Red
Chair
Software) that allows me to access the contents of the ipod in a tree
format
just like windows explorer. The program is pretty cheap (around $25) and
works great with jfw. The one drawback with anapod is that you need
another
program to do the ripping and encoding of the tracks. Red Chair Software
recommends a program called audio grabber but I'm using Itunes to do the
"import" of tracks mostly because it's ultimately easier despite the
unfriendliness of the app in general.

The long and short of it is that you can absolutely transfer and manage
your
music on the ipod. I love the ipod and am not sorry I bought one.

My understanding of the ipod shuffle is that, unlike the ipod, you have
to
load the music in the order in which you want to hear it. In other words
I
don't think you can do playlists or random play. That's not an issue for
me
since I load the songs in my preferred order anyway.

Sorry for the lengthy post but I hope it was helpful.

Raul, do you have a file on the Jaws-specific hot keys for Power DVD or is
there a help section somewhere in the program which has the Jaws hot keys
