CDEX now is recording JAWS, help!

2005-09-05 Thread stever2525
A friend of mine is using the analogue recording option with CDEX. She is
recording from a cassette to her sound card. If she goes and does other
things with her PC, JAWS can be heard.
I tried it, and JAWS only plays through my speakers and not in the
recording. We compared settings, but must have missed something. Any ideas?
thank you

Ipodder

2005-09-05 Thread Chris Chaffin
Hi all,
I am new to podcasting, and I have a few questions:
1. I heard Ipodder is very friendly with Jaws and was planning on using the
software, where can I download the software?
2. Is there anywhere I can learn how to use the Ipodder software?
3. Does the software give you a list of podcasting sites that you can sign up
with, or where is a good place to go to find podcasting sites I can sign up
with?
Thanks for all the help!

Ipodder facts

2005-09-05 Thread Scott Meyer
Hi Chris Here's what Debbie Krafts wrote awhile back to get me interested
in podcast.a web site to look into is is podnova.com
Scott
Hello listers,
I should warn you up front this is going to be a long post, but I can't
keep quiet about this any longer! Also please excuse the cross-posting this
once. I realize that extended discussion of this subject may be off-topic
for the list, so feel free to contact me off-list if I can provide any
additional information on this. Thanks, and here goes:

Back in February, I read an article in the New York Times about a new
way to use audio and RSS technology which is called podcasting. Basically,
its a way of getting mp3 files which other users create and upload to a
server automatically downloaded to your machine/mp3 player as soon as they
become available. Now don't let the "pod" in the name "podcast" put you
off--you don't need an Ipod to take advantage of these files--your computer
or any portable mp3 player (like the Bookport) will work just fine, thank
you! Not all podcasts are in mp3 format, but the vast majority of them are.
The only additional piece you need is a piece of software called an
aggrigator (or frequently referred to as a podcatcher)! I knew immediately
that this was the answer to my mp3 file prayers, and have been exploring the
wide world of podcasts ever since. And a goldmine it is! There are
podcasts available on every conceivable subject from news, technology,
sports, music, comedy etc. You can find serialized books and dramas,
programs for any musical taste, programs that make you laugh out loud,
religious programs, and on and on it goes. To help you get started in
exploring this rich and varied world, I've put together a little 5-step
getting started guide. I hope some of you will find as much enjoyment from
this as I have had.

 Step 1: Get an aggrigator
So how do you find the right software? Podcastalley provides an excellent
software page which is a good central point for finding the software you
need. Go to
http://www.podcastalley.com/phpBB2/links.php
Finding the best software to use with your screen reader will take a little
experimentation. The program I use and recommend is Ipodder 2.0 available
at
http://ipodder.sourceforge.net
Here is a direct download link:
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/ipodder/iPodder2.0.exe?download
Another program that works well with speech is Primetime Podcast Receiver
http://www.primetimepodcast.com/blog/default.aspx
Once you've downloaded and installed your aggrigator, take some time to
familiarize yourself with the default options. You'll probably want to
change the download directory to something that works for you, or at least
find out what the default location is. You may also want to check a box to
have scans done automatically when the program starts. Also take a look at
the scheduling options, which are generally in a separate dialog box. I
have mine set up to check for new files every four hours. Most programs
will either allow you to set specific times or frequencies in hours.

Step 2: Find and subscribe to podcasts
The easiest way to subscribe to podcasts is to use the directories built in
to most podcatchers. In Ipodder, simply hit control-tab once from the
starting screen and you will land in a directory tree structure with several
directories to choose from. Most of these programs use a tabbed interface
so you use control-tab to change views. Use the tree structure to locate
categories and podcasts you are interested in. In Ipodder, simply press
enter on any show you want to add. Hit shift-control-tab to cycle back to
the subscriptions view which shows the list of shows you are subscribed to.
Be aware that most programs including Ipodder start you off with a few
default podcasts. If you aren't interested in these defaults, they can be
easily removed. In Ipodder, right click on the unwanted entry and choose
"remove" from the menu. In Primetime, just hit the delete key. You can
manually enter feeds by copying a feed's URL and then pasting it in to the
program's new feeds dialog box. In Ipodder, use control-n to bring up that
box.

Step 3: Scan for new shows
Once you've subscribed to some shows, start the scanning/downloading
process. In Ipodder, you can do this by pressing f5. It is also possible
to scan an individual show from the tools menu. Most programs will download
just the newest show for each podcast. If you highlight a program in
Ipodder, then press tab, you will be in a list of the podcasts on the
server. If you want to download previous programs, use your review cursor
to locate the graphic symbol to the left of the episode you want, then
left-click it. The status of the entry will change from "skipped" to "to
download". I cannot find a keyboard equivalent for this. The bottom of the
display should display information about the downloads in most programs.

 Step 4: Transfer your files
Locate your download directory.

is there an easier way of recording skype conversations?

2005-09-05 Thread Chris Skarstad
Hi folks
I've been doing lots of research about recording skype conversations and it
just seems to me that there simply has got to be an easier way than what
I've found. Let me take you through what I've heard and what I've tried so far.

A site I saw about this subject mentions total recorder, which I tried a
few days ago. When I rebooted after installing it, JAWS would not speak. It
loaded but it didn't speak, it's like it got stuck somewhere. Note I'm
not using eloquence. i'm using an external hardware synthesizer, a dectalk
express. So something that total recorder was doing just wasn't getting
along with JAWS 6.0 on my system.

So i uninstalled it and JAWS worked again. So that's out for me at this
stage. Ok, back to rresearch...
Another site mentioned a product called virtual audio cables, which costs
$40. Aparently it creates a virtual sound card and will allow you to have 2
devices running, one to use skype, and the other one to record it using any
sound editor.
But aparently in this setup, you have to have 2 computers with 2 different
skype accounts running at the same time...and that's not possible. Simply
isn't going to work since I only have 1.
I've looked at other programs like Hot Recorder and Freecorder, both which
don't seem to be very speech friendly. So aside from going out and buying
another sound card, does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can do to
record both sides of a skype call and save it as an mp3 file?
I've been looking all over but maybe I missed something.

Thanks for any ideas!!!

hi
It's entirely possible that your sound card doesn't support 5.1 surround
sound. That might be why you aren't hearing it.
Just a guess though.

Shoutcast plugin question

2005-09-05 Thread Jed Barton
Hey guys,
Trying to set the encoder for the shoutcast plugin.
I don't see a 96 or 128K availability.
Am I mising something.
It brings me in to a list box, and says there are 41 choices, and 96 or
128 is not an option.
Thoughts?
Thanks,
Jed

Re: Winamp 5.1 is now Available

2005-09-05 Thread Kelly Sapergia
Hi,
I was just wondering if certain bugs that I found in previous versions
resolved in 5.1? For instance, in version 5.093, I noticed that if I were
using the Wave Output plugin and held down an arrow key to fast forward or
rewind through a file, the computer would sometimes crash, and I'd have to
press the Reset button. Control+Alt+Delete did nothing. The DirectSound
Output plugin worked perfectly, but I ended up going back to a previous
version.
Also, there's an annoying problem I've been experiencing while
broadcasting. If I go out of WinAmp's window to check on MSN Messenger or
whatever, I sometimes can't move past the currently playing track when I
get back into the Playlist window. Beside the artist and track information,
there's a [1] (that's the number 1 in brackets), just before the time. When
the track finishes playing, it'll repeat itself. Whenever this happens, I
have to delete the currently playing song in the playlist editor. I'm then
able to move to the next song. This problem started in version 5.08E, and
as far as I know hasn't been fixed.
Thanks.

Yours Sincerely,
Kelly John Sapergia

I'm wondering, have people been reporting these bugs to the Nullsoft

use of the forums and who has been very frustrated by some of the playlist

Can't get Skype to Worok

2005-09-05 Thread Gary Wood
Hi all. I just installed the newest version of Skype, and I don't like it. I
tried to call a friend of mine on it, but it didn't work. I got somebody else.
When I do an alt c, at says, "answer unavailable." It doesn't say anything
about calling anyone. I use the Jaws curser to find the list of people. I
made a call by pressing enter on a name, but got somebody else, instead. What
do I do? How can I get the previous version back? With this computer, I've
never had any luck using system restore.

Hi Jed

the shoutcast plugin doesn't go any higher than 56. You need something like
the Lame encoder that can do that.

All the best

Can't get Skype to Worok

2005-09-05 Thread John covici
I am not using Jaws, but I had no trouble -- I right clicked on the
name and the first entry there was to call them -- yes they did take
the contact submenu out of the call menu -- I am not sure why they did
that. So try using right click on the name instead. This is with the
beta version of skype.

Re: Winamp 5.1 is now Available

2005-09-05 Thread Larry N
I'm going to be doing that with a bug that I found, which is that when
Winamp 5.1 is installed, another recording program that I have, namely
Replay Music, cannot access CDDb and won't record. If I uninstall the new
winamp and re-install Winamp 5.09, the problem resolves itself. Also, .pls
streams along with others that aren't even related to Winamp won't play from
within Internet Explorer when 5.1 is installed. Again, if I re-install 5.09,
the problem goes away. I'm unhappy with the number of critical bugs that are
showing up in recent Winamp versions and I'm looking for something else that
will play pls files that isn't quite so buggy. Either freeware or shareware
is fine. I don't mind paying for what works. Meanwhile, making the
developers aware of the problem is a good idea.

Highlight the name you want to call.
Press the right mouse button.
Arrow down until you hear "call this contact."
Press enter.
Your call should be initiated.
I too like you had no luck by simply highlighting the name then pressing enter
but the method I outlined above does work very well.

Re: dvd ripper

2005-09-05 Thread Brent Harding
Don't you sort of have to have that Decss thing in there to rip a DVD? It's
just hard to get one to play these days, often I hear the theme repeating
over and over to no end and it never seems to start. I played with PowerDVD,
which came with my new burner. If one could just rip the audio, one could
play in winamp and have no choppy sound or trouble with menu systems.

Re: Can't get Skype to Worok

2005-09-05 Thread Robert Hebert
They say the sound quality is a bit better.
Skype out especially was a bit like talking on a 2-way radio and I believe this
has improved.
I had purchased Skype out previously but these credits are now used up.
Personally, I found no real problems using Skype but my wife who makes most of
the long distance phone calls in this household hated it. Once the new beta 4
becomes a non-beta I will likely buy more credits and give Skype out another
try.
Skype out just in case you don't know gives one the ability to initiate a call
fron ones computer to someone's actual landline. Using Skype you talk using
your headset and microphone to someone on the other end using a regular
telephone. The cost is about 2 cents per minute Canadian anywhere in the world
at any time.
As Skype changes versions, the Jaws scripts are beginning to lose functionality
but the program is still quite doable.

Have you tried using Recall pro? All you'd have to do is set Recall pro to
record from your sound card's what you hear set in the Windows volume
recording controls.

Subject: is there an easier way of recording skype conversations?

Hi folks
I've been doing lots of research about recording skype conversations and it
just seems to me that there simply has got to be an easier way than what
I've found. Let me take you through what I've heard and what I've tried so
far.

Re: surround sound in winamp 5.1

2005-09-05 Thread Robert Hebert
Looks like Winamp is putting surround in 2 speakers--i.e. it appears to
automatically change speaker settings.
Yesterday, I noticed my speaker settings had been set to quadraphonic. I put
them back to stereo after experimenting with the latest Winamp 5.1.
Well, today, these settings had been changed again and this time they were on
5.1 surround sound.
I played some songs through 6 speakers using the surround sound setting but my
speakers are not surround sound speakers--i.e. I do not have a surround system
so still didn't notice much difference--if any--though I really wanted to!

Re: is there an easier way of recording skype conversations?

2005-09-05 Thread Chris Skarstad
hi
Ok, here's the thing. Before I make a skype call, I select what you hear
in the recording controls.
When I make a skype call and the other person answers it, the microphone is
then selected, which turns off the what you hear option, preventing me from
recording both sides of the conversation. I think I probably need to
change something in Skype to prevent it from changing my audio settings
each time someone answers a call. Also when this happens, my mic is
muted, but the other person can still hear me just fine, but again, I look
in my playback controls, and the mic is muted in playback, but not in
recording controls. By the way, I'm using a SB Audigy 2 sound card if any
of this helps.
Thanks. I hope what I just said makes some kind of sense? :)

2005-09-05 Thread Brent Harding
Not sure, I would assume so, why else would they mention it if one needed
two systems, then one may as well use a real cable, I don't think you could
share sound from one system on another anyways, to use the virtual cable to
hook the sound from two networked machines together. I guess one would have
to find specific instructions on using virtual audio cable to see what they
say to do, and more than one person probably made instructions for doing it,
depending on what they had available to them.

2005-09-05 Thread Brent Harding
The trouble with using what you hear on skype is that the person you're
talking to hears themself back then, so if using with skype out, they'd find
it kind of odd.
