Re: soundforge 8

2006-11-15 Thread Bob Nelson
I could be wrong but I don't think that is a good idea.

If you go to the options menu and press enter on preferences, you will be
presented with a multi tab dialog.

The audio tab in that dialog is where one can change the playback and record
devices.

Unless there is some compelling reason to use anything other than the
preferred audio device, the playback and record devices should be left as
the Microsoft wave mapper which is, in effect, the preferred audio device as
determined in the control panel of Windows.

I have been using an external Audigy ZS2 for quite some time with the
playback and record devices set to Microsoft wave mapper and Sound Forge
work flawlessly.

Note that when control r is used to bring up the record dialog, the record
device is displayed. The setting is taken from the preferences settings.
Again, unless there is some compelling reason to do so, it should be left as
microsoft wave mapper.

Hope this helps,

Robert Nelson

Question about Olympus DS2

2006-11-15 Thread Chris Gilland
Hey guys. I just this month got an Olympus DS2 Digital voice recorder. I
love it, and just about have most of the menus I'd ever need to know
memorized by heart, however, maybe I misheard this, but is there a 3rd party
software that I could install to make the menus speak? It seems like I

Rockbox, I already know about that. That isn't what I'm talking about.

Thanks.

RE: soundforge 8

2006-11-15 Thread Ibby Karbhari
Bob,
Keeping his creative for recording and playback of radio and/or music, means
that he can use his speech to use sound forge and the speech then does not
get recorded.

However, The creative sound card is not in the list to choose from.

So, how do you make soundforge use the card he wants?

Re: Question about Olympus DS2

2006-11-15 Thread Michael Lang
Chris,

There is indeed as software, with which one can change the menus of the
DS-2. It is the plus version of DSS Player. To get it, you have to first
install the DSS Player from the supplied CD. Then you have to update it
to the plus version via the web. The update option can be found in the
DSS Player menu. The update costs between ten and twenty Dollars.

I could be wrong but I don't think that is a good idea.

If you go to the options menu and press enter on preferences, you will be
presented with a multi tab dialog.

The audio tab in that dialog is where one can change the playback and
 record
 devices.

Unless there is some compelling reason to use anything other than the
preferred audio device, the playback and record devices should be left as
the Microsoft wave mapper which is, in effect, the preferred audio device
 as
determined in the control panel of Windows.

Yeah, I knew ab out that; I meant a free version, of software that I could
use and actually copy over to the recorder itself. I didn't mean go through
the software in windows.

the record window remains and I see no sign of any recording being done.
I've only been able to record in version 5.

Re: soundforge 8

2006-11-15 Thread Bob Nelson

Hello Ibby,

I understand exactly what you mean.

On my computer, I have an NVIDIA sound chip on the motherboard and an
external Creative Audigy ZS2 sound card.

The on-board NVIDIA is used for the screen reader speech and the Creative
Audigy is used for all the other sound tasks.

To achieve this, the NVIDIA on board sound chip is enabled as well as the
Creative Audigy.

Through the control panel of Windows, the Creative Audigy is set to be the
default (or, more commonly called, preferred) audio device. Therefore, all
sound tasks such as playing sound or recording is done through the Creative
Audigy.

In my case, the usual windows volume control application allows the
Creative Audigy to be configured. A separate NVIDIA sound mixer program
allows the configuration of the volume et cetera of the on board NVIDIA
sound chip.

Assuming that Jaws is the screen reader, a special line must be inserted
into the jfw.ini file which tells Jaws to use the NVIDIA synthesiser.

I do not know how this is done for screen readers like window eyes.

As you will appreciate from this, these settings are established before you
start Sound Forge.

When you go in to Sound Forge, you want Sound Forge to use the default (or
preferred) audio device. In my case, that means the Creative Audigy.

In Sound Forge's preferences dialog (reached through the options menu),
there is a tab which allows you to specify the audio device you want to use
for playback and recording. If you specify Microsoft sound mapper in each
case, Sound Forge will know that you want to use the default (or preferred)
sound device determined in the control panel of windows.

The fact that Sound Forge allows you to specify a sound device other than
the default (or preferred) sound device acknowledges that, in some very
sophisticated setups, you may want to use a specific sound card for a
specific purpose. However, that is something that is likely to happen only
in high tech recording studios. That is why, in my previous message, I
stated that you would only use something other than the Microsoft sound
mapper only if there was some compelling reason to do so.

I hope this clarifies my previous message,

Bob Nelson

Keeping his creative for recording and playback of radio and/or music,
 means
that he can use his speech to use sound forge and the speech then does not
 get recorded.

However, The creative sound card is not in the list to choose from.

So, how do you make soundforge use the card he wants?

I could be wrong but I don't think that is a good idea.

If you go to the options menu and press enter on preferences, you will be
presented with a multi tab dialog.

The audio tab in that dialog is where one can change the playback and
 record

 devices.

Unless there is some compelling reason to use anything other than the
preferred audio device, the playback and record devices should be left as
the Microsoft wave mapper which is, in effect, the preferred audio device
 as

determined in the control panel of Windows.

I have been using an external Audigy ZS2 for quite some time with the
playback and record devices set to Microsoft wave mapper and Sound Forge
 work flawlessly.

Note that when control r is used to bring up the record dialog, the record
device is displayed. The setting is taken from the preferences settings.
Again, unless there is some compelling reason to do so, it should be left
 as

 microsoft wave mapper.

 Hope this helps,

 Robert Nelson

Re: soundforge 8

2006-11-15 Thread Bob Nelson
When you press control r, the record dialog box will come up.

If you press the spacebar or the letter to begin recording, the dialog box
will change but remain on the screen. The cursor will remain on the record
button.

If you press the tab key twice, you will move to the close button and you
can stop recording by pressing the spacebar on the close button.

If my memory serves me correctly, if you press the spacebar on the record
button while you are recording, the recording is paused and is resumed again
when you press the spacebar again. However, don't hold me to that because
it is not a function that I use. A little experimentation should should
establish how it works.

the record window remains and I see no sign of any recording being done.
I've only been able to record in version 5.

Re: soundforge 8

2006-11-15 Thread Gary Petraccaro
May depend on what he's using as the source for recording. If it's line-in,
there's no recording of speech. Neither should there be with the mic.

  Bob,
Keeping his creative for recording and playback of radio and/or music, means
that he can use his speech to use sound forge and the speech then does not
  get recorded.

However, The creative sound card is not in the list to choose from.

So, how do you make soundforge use the card he wants?

  Ibby

   Hi Folks,
A friend of mine has Soundforge 8 but cannot find in preferenses where to
tell soundforge to select the creative labbs sound card. Maybe I was
   looking
in the wrong place I certainly didn't see the card listed.

All help appreciated as he uses his on-board for his speech and the
   creative
for his music and all his internet listening and he wants to use the
   creative card to record with.

   Kindest Regards,

   Ibby.

Re: soundforge 8

2006-11-15 Thread Gary Petraccaro
In a word. No. The window stays. You could use screen review to check out
the screen and look for level indicators to check to see if the sound's being
recorded. Also, if your system and graphics permit, you could enable meters
which you can also find on the screen and see if they change, indicating the
passage of time. The meters won't be accessible on all systems for reasons
which escape me.

Let me ask my question a different way. after pressing control r and the
record window comes up. Shouldn't that window go away when I press r or alt
r to start the recording? If so then this is not happening when I press r
the record window remains and I see no sign of any recording being done.
I've only been able to record in version 5.
