My SoundForge 8.0D MP3 formatting problems continued.
Hi Folks: I have discovered that, if I load a mono file in to SoundForge, whether high or low quality, I am only able to save the file as an MP3 file as 128 KBPS or lower. It also defaults to Joint Stereo with no option to choose otherwise. If, however, I convert the files to stereo, then all options are opened to me. Is this a well known fact? If so, I took the long way around to discover it. Cheers. Setting up internet station
Hi I would like to set up an internet site which allows streaming music, similar to a radio station. Also it would contain files for streaming or download. Additionally a section for a forum for comments, and a section for donations by card etc. I'm looking for the following advice: 1. Which programs would allow me to do this - they have to be accessible. (I don't know html programming and would like something simple) 2. Are there packages available from vendors which set this up easily. Any recommendations. 3. Audio wise - for streaming what do I need to know. Is all the streaming done from the site or do I have to use my own machine as a server, making it available for anyone to access. (I would like to have continuous streaming music.) 4. What are the legalities of streaming music over the internet, or containing them within podcast files? (This is for the UK) 5. Can anyone suggest a good quality noise cancelling headset for good recording quality? I've probably not mentioned all I need but if some replies could get me started I would appreciate it. *** iPods can make pacemakers malfunction: study (Reuters) Published Thu, 10 May 2007 20:07:49 GMT Reuters - iPods can cause cardiac implantable pacemakers to malfunction by interfering with the electromagnetic equipment monitoring the heart, according to a study presented by a 17-year-old high school student to a meeting of heart specialists on Thursday. Yahoo! News By Debra Sherman 1 hour, 10 minutes ago CHICAGO (Reuters) - iPods can cause cardiac implantable pacemakers to malfunction by interfering with the electromagnetic equipment monitoring the heart, according to a study presented by a 17-year-old high school student to a meeting of heart specialists on Thursday. The study tested the effect of the portable music devices on 100 patients, whose mean age was 77, outfitted with pacemakers. Electrical interference was detected half of the time when the iPod was held just 2 inches from the patient's chest for 5 to 10 seconds. The study did not examine any portable music devices other than iPods, which are made by Apple Inc. In some cases, the iPods caused interference when held 18 inches from the chest. Interfering with the telemetry equipment caused the device to misread the heart's pacing and in one case caused the pacemaker to stop functioning altogether. The study was held at the Thoracic and Cardiovascular Institute at Michigan State University. The results were presented at the Heart Rhythm Society annual meeting in Denver. Jay Thaker, lead author of the study and a student at Okemos High School in Okemos, Michigan, concluded that iPod interference can lead physicians to misdiagnose actual heart function. Thaker, whose father is an electrophysiologist and whose mother is a rheumatologist, said he asked his dad about a potential interaction between pacemakers and iPods. We looked online but didn't see anything. Then, one of his patients asked him if there would be a problem, so (my father) put me in touch with Dr. Krit (Jongnarangsin), Thaker said in a telephone interview. Jongnarangsin, a long-time friend of Thaker's father, is the senior author of the study and an assistant professor in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Michigan. Most pacemaker patients are not iPod users, Jongnarangsin said. For that reason, he said, it is unclear how often iPods cause misdiagnosis. This needs to be studied more, Jongnarangsin added. Thaker said he is interested in doing a similar study about how implantable cardioverter defibrillators, known as ICDs, are affected by iPods. Dave Technology Review Tuesday, May 08, 2007 Audio Menus for iPods By Kate Greene Download an MP3 version of this story http://www.audiodizer.com/technologyreview/infotech/download.aspx?id=18 703 Researchers are testing ways to let people listen to gadget menu options instead of looking at them. Clicking through the menu on your iPod demands a significant amount of visual attention, which can be a hassle (while jogging) and even dangerous (while driving). But engineers at the University of Toronto and Microsoft Research are working on software that could make it possible to navigate the menus of gadgets that use circular touch pads, like the iPod, without looking at them--only audio cues would be used. The researchers have designed an auditory menu technique--called earPod--that provides audio feedback when a person drags his or her finger around the touch pad. Although it's not ready to replace the expansive menus on real iPods, the results are encouraging, says Patrick Baudisch, a research scientist at Microsoft Research, in Seattle, who worked on the project. LINK: http://www.patrickbaudisch.com/ Within 30 minutes of beginning to use the technology, people can navigate two levels of earPod menus faster than traditional visual menus, and just as accurately. Requiring constant visual attention while using a PC is reasonable, says Baudisch, but if you're using an iPod on the road, [constant visual attention] is unreasonable. In addition to giving people back their eyes, he says, audio menus could help gadgets save battery life by not wasting energy on a screen, and they could add functions to the screen-free devices such as the iPod shuffle. The idea of using audio menus isn't new. Auditory interfaces can, after all, be found in touch-tone phone menus and in various assisted technologies for seeing-impaired users. But historically, handheld consumer gadgets haven't widely used audio menus. There are a few reasons for this, says Bruce Walker, professor in the school of psychology and college of computing at Georgia Institute of Technology. LINK: http://sonify.psych.gatech.edu/~walkerb/ One reason, he says, is that audio hardware and software have been resource intensive, requiring significant amounts of computation and energy. In addition, audio software has been difficult to program. But computing power is becoming cheaper, and there is an increasing need to find different ways to interact with handheld devices, says Walker. Within the past 10 years, he says, the ubiquity of mobile devices with small displays has made us all visually impaired. Currently there are only a handful of researchers who are systematically looking at ways to make better audio interfaces for various devices, but Walker expects the ranks to grow in the coming years. This first earPod prototype has a two-level menu hierarchy with 8 items per category, for a total of 64 items. To test how well people use the system, the researchers assigned to the first menu level a random assortment of categories: clothing, fish,

Hi Ken. I'm running the latest version with no trouble. You can also try it before you buy it to make certain it's what you want. I believe there are a few limitations during the trial period, but you can at least get the feel of the software. Re: Winamp Version 5.35 is now Available
Which change are you referring to, Bruce? I don't pretend to know all the terms, but I see nothing about security listed. The point is moot. I take Steve's assurance that I no longer need worry about the patch. But you make it seem as though I should see something in the list of changes that I don't. - Original Message - From: Bruce Toews [EMAIL PROTECTED] That fix is one of the changes listed, so it's no longer needed. bruce On Tue, 15 May 2007, Adrian Spratt wrote: Does this version include the security patch created for 5.34, or is it no longer needed? - Original Message - From: Steve Pattison [EMAIL PROTECTED] Winamp version 5.35 is now available and one place where you can download it from is at www.majorgeeks.com/Winamp_5_Full_d2490.html. The security patch was supposed to fix an overflow problem with M4! files that could be a vulnerability. In the list of changes, one of the changes mentioned was that an overflow problem with M4A files had been corrected. bruce -- Bruce Toews Skype ID: o.canada E-mail and MSN/Windows Messenger: [EMAIL PROTECTED] LiveJournal: http://brucetola.livejournal.com Radio Show and Podcast: http://www.totw.net Web Site (including info on my weekly commentaries): http://www.ogts.net Info on the Best TV Show of All Time: http://www.cornergas.com On Tue, 15 May 2007, Adrian Spratt wrote: Which change are you referring to, Bruce?
