Tom,

You have the first choice checked by default, which could influence the
result. If it isn't possible not to have one option checked, you might wish
to add an option of don't know, which is checked by default.

My SoundForge 8.0D MP3 formatting problems continued.

2007-05-15 Thread Jim Noseworthy
Hi Folks:

I have discovered that, if I load a mono file in to SoundForge, whether high or
low quality, I am only able to save the file as an MP3 file as 128 KBPS or
lower. It also defaults to Joint Stereo with no option to choose otherwise. If,
however, I convert the files to stereo, then all options are opened to me.

Is this a well known fact? If so, I took the long way around to discover it.

Cheers.

Setting up internet station

2007-05-15 Thread G. McFarlane
Hi
I would like to set up an internet site which allows streaming music, similar
to a radio station. Also it would contain files for streaming or download.
Additionally a section for a forum for comments, and a section for donations by
card etc.
I'm looking for the following advice:
1. Which programs would allow me to do this - they have to be accessible. (I
don't know html programming and would like something simple)
2. Are there packages available from vendors which set this up easily. Any
recommendations.
3. Audio wise - for streaming what do I need to know. Is all the streaming done
from the site or do I have to use my own machine as a server, making it
available for anyone to access. (I would like to have continuous streaming
music.)
4. What are the legalities of streaming music over the internet, or containing
them within podcast files? (This is for the UK)
5. Can anyone suggest a good quality noise cancelling headset for good
recording quality?

I've probably not mentioned all I need but if some replies could get me started
I would appreciate it.

However, one cannot put a wind screen onto it. That's why I like the

*** iPods can make pacemakers malfunction: study (Reuters)

Published Thu, 10 May 2007 20:07:49 GMT

Reuters - iPods can cause cardiac implantable pacemakers to malfunction by
interfering with the electromagnetic equipment monitoring the heart,
according

to a study presented by a 17-year-old high school student to a meeting of
heart specialists on Thursday.

Yahoo! News

By Debra Sherman 1 hour, 10 minutes ago CHICAGO (Reuters) - iPods can cause
cardiac implantable pacemakers to malfunction by interfering with the
electromagnetic

equipment monitoring the heart, according to a study presented by a
17-year-old high school student to a meeting of heart specialists on
Thursday.

The study tested the effect of the portable music devices on 100 patients,
whose mean age was 77, outfitted with pacemakers. Electrical interference
was

detected half of the time when the iPod was held just 2 inches from the
patient's chest for 5 to 10 seconds.

The study did not examine any portable music devices other than iPods, which
are made by Apple Inc.

In some cases, the iPods caused interference when held 18 inches from the
chest. Interfering with the telemetry equipment caused the device to misread
the

heart's pacing and in one case caused the pacemaker to stop functioning
altogether.

The study was held at the Thoracic and Cardiovascular Institute at Michigan
State University. The results were presented at the Heart Rhythm Society
annual

meeting in Denver.

Jay Thaker, lead author of the study and a student at Okemos High School in
Okemos, Michigan, concluded that iPod interference can lead physicians to
misdiagnose

actual heart function.

Thaker, whose father is an electrophysiologist and whose mother is a
rheumatologist, said he asked his dad about a potential interaction between
pacemakers

and iPods.

We looked online but didn't see anything. Then, one of his patients asked
him if there would be a problem, so (my father) put me in touch with Dr.
Krit

(Jongnarangsin), Thaker said in a telephone interview.

Jongnarangsin, a long-time friend of Thaker's father, is the senior author
of the study and an assistant professor in the Division of Cardiovascular
Medicine

at the University of Michigan.

Most pacemaker patients are not iPod users, Jongnarangsin said. For that
reason, he said, it is unclear how often iPods cause misdiagnosis.

This needs to be studied more, Jongnarangsin added.

Thaker said he is interested in doing a similar study about how implantable
cardioverter defibrillators, known as ICDs, are affected by iPods.

I just installed RockBox on my Color Photo 60 this past weekend, and I am

So, two questions.
1. Can we access and use the calendar and contacts? And, do they sync with

2. Are there any of the plug-ins that work with speech? I am sure a lot of
them don't, but I wondered about such things as the text editor.

:
: Clicking through the menu on your iPod demands a significant

:
: The researchers have designed an auditory menu technique--called

 Hi Ken,
What I'm assuming you want to do here, is record stuff from tapes and
put it onto your pC, if you want to go for something relatively
inexpensive that'll do the Job, I'd go with GoldWave. IT's just a
matter of hooking up your tape recorder to your sound card's line-in
jack, and changing the appropriate settings in your volume control,
then you should be able to do it once you have software.

YouSendIt and Applian Partnership

Replay A/V is going to have an interface to
YouSendIt
, so you can send recordings to yourself from one PC to another
device. How cool is that!

Here's the Press Release:

YouSendIt, Applian Partner to Record and Deliver Large Streaming
Media Files Via the Web

Partnership Allows Customers to Retrieve Recorded Online Media
Anywhere

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. SAN ANSELMO, Calif. -- YouSendIt, Inc.,
the leader in web-based file delivery for business and Applian
Technologies, the global
leader in software products for recording streaming media, today
announced a partnership that will allow Applian customers to
retrieve their recorded media
anywhere they have Internet access. The combined offering will
enable users to capture, convert and send media with Applian's
Replay A/V 8 and YouSendIt's
Web based file transfer service.

The YouSendIt Plug-In for Applian's Replay A/V 8 is the first to
allow users to send streaming media files directly from within
the application. Customers
can set up file transfer to start automatically after the
recording is completed.

YouSendIt is known to be very easy to use, says Ivan Koon,
CEO, YouSendIt. The integration into Replay A/V 8 allows users
to send files directly from
within the application, eliminating the pain associated with
using FTP or burning a CD and sending it via overnight mail.

We are excited to partner with YouSendIt -- building the ease
of use, speed, reliability and security of YouSendIt's solution
into Replay A/V 8 will help
our customers record, convert and then retrieve their favorite
recordings anywhere they have Internet access, said Bill
Dettering, CEO, Applian. The
combined solution will be the most powerful and versatile
recording program on the market. Our customers will now be able
to enjoy their favorite shows
wherever and whenever they like.

Replay A/V makes it easy to record all types of online media.
Several hundred thousand Applian customers already benefit from
the ability to record almost
any streaming audio and video instantaneously, or schedule
recordings to happen automatically later. The integrated Replay
Media Guide lets users pick
shows to record with a single click. Replay A/V is the only
software that combines Stream Capture, Audio Recording and an
Enhanced Podcast Client in one
easy-to-use interface.

The Replay A/V YouSendIt integration will allow users to receive
captured streaming media files anywhere. For example, a home PC
can record a radio show,
and customers will be able to listen to that show while at work
or travelling.

Replay A/V with YouSendIt service will be available in March
2007, with a beta version in February.

well while we've not yet heard of the ipodder, we would like to inform you
that you do not need to wait for this (most likely pricey) add on for an

Re: trying to find software which will enable me

2007-05-15 Thread Larry N
Hi Ken. I'm running the latest version with no trouble. You can also try it
before you buy it to make certain it's what you want. I believe there are a
few limitations during the trial period, but you can at least get the feel
of the software. Lots of people on this list either use it or have used it,
so there should be no shortage of help, if you need it.

Hi Dan; Well, that sounds good; *excuse the pun* grin; Do you have
 any
idea where I can buy Goldwave? I wonder if there's any low cost type
 site
for software? Instead of saving to my pc, for transferringfrom cassette
ETC., I'd like to put any sounds and music typeof 02 stuff directly to
 a
cd. God wave sounds like fun to run even though I have no experience in
transferring but will learn and besides, I'd probably get help on this
 list.

 Hi Ken,
What I'm assuming you want to do here, is record stuff from tapes and
put it onto your pC, if you want to go for something relatively
inexpensive that'll do the Job, I'd go with GoldWave. IT's just a
matter of hooking up your tape recorder to your sound card's line-in
jack, and changing the appropriate settings in your volume control,
then you should be able to do it once you have software.

However, one cannot put a wind screen onto it. That's why I like the
SP-SP-SM13 (high sensitivity version) even better. It comes with two
windscreens and can easily be plugged onto the R-09 like the special Edirol
mike. Here's the link for the Sound Professionals Microphone SP-SPSM-13:

The security patch was supposed to fix an overflow problem with M4! files
that could be a vulnerability. In the list of changes, one of the changes
mentioned was that an overflow problem with M4A files had been corrected.
