Re: A new conversion utility:

2007-11-25 Thread Jorge Mojica
I'm pretty sure I posted this early on in the thread, but yes, after you can
download it, it's very accessible.
Yeah, you'll get an error in the combo box but it doesn't mean anything,
just a bug I guess. another thing to mention is that at some point you'll
probably get extra windows that open up, I haven't discovered what they're
for, I always just alt f four out of them, I think there are three.
to make things a little more streamlined, when you hit the applications key
you can save the settings you've adjusted to as a profile so you can quickly
select it for next time. I don't know if after you close the prog your
adjustments are saved.
For the person who asked, it's a conversion prog that has many options,
converting various video and audio formats. I think you can make ring tones
for cell phones for those who are into that.
I use it to get audio from you tube vids, or to get audio from avi or other
vid formats.

WMA lossless actually produce smallest file than FLAC, well, only a bit
smallest, but only the MS zune mp3 player do support WMA lossless.

so, as with Apple AAC Lossless, you are pretty closed with MS audio

Re: The advantages of flak?

2007-11-25 Thread Dane Trethowan
Right, well I've never played with WMA losless but now would seem an
appropriate time to bring up some information regarding FLAC.
Some software still uses the older version of FLAC, current versions
of Total Recorder for example. The compression rates aren't as good
and performance on higher compression levels is also a little slow,
FLAC has 8 compression levels, the highest providing maximum
compression but it takes a while to compress the file as more
processing power is ued.
In the later versions of FLAC, pcompression performance is enhanced
ad the time is far les.
Actually FLAC is a bit more than just compresion these days, you can
for example insert a cue sheet file into a FLAC file along with the
audio so you have (in my case where I store both cue and FLAC files) a
CD in one file ready to copy or convert.

Hi. This is why it's really, really important to make sure that you
don't just click yes like a mad man when you're going through these
installs. I've had like 5 other people on the list I run have similar
issues, and I can't imagine how everyone misses these checkboxes to
install the Winamp remote, and the Winamp toolbar for Internet explorer.

. Now, because I chose the custom install instead of the standard
one, that's probably why the check boxes showed up. But anymore when
it comes to installing a media player, and yes sadly Winamp nowadays
even, it's really important to always choose the custom
install. That way you know *exactly* what's happening during the
instalation and can avoid any other weird software being installed
that you don't want on your machine. Believe me, I went through this
too, and my atempt isn't to chide or look down on anyone else for not

the same mistakes I made and had to fix later.

Exactly, that's why I suggested that list members have something like
Rollback on their computer, that way then can rollback to the point before
the installation was started, Windows System Restore doesn't always work for
this.
Another point to ponder, when removing software through the add/remove
feature of Windows, unfortunately not all software is equal thus not all
software will be removed equally. For example some applications leave great
chunks of that application in the registry and on other parts of the
computer, this can be often hard to track down.

when burning a cd does it matter if I have a plugin selected for limiting audio in winamp or not

2007-11-25 Thread Casey
Hear is what I would like to know.
If I have a multi band limiting plug in selected in whenamp for listening to
mp3's and things like that.
Does it matter or have any affect on a cd that I am burning I mean does it
affect the sound of it or adjust the sound of the burned copy of the cd?
Or does it not matter if I have any plug in selected in win or not cause
since winamp has nothing to do wth cd's and burning them then I can just
leave whatever plug ins selected in winamp and not even worry about them.
And just burn a cd like I usually would before I had the pul ins installed
and running.
Or is it a good idea to first open and go in toe dsp plug in section and
unselect any plug ins that might be running before burning the cd?
Thanks ahd have a nice day.

FLAC and Cue Files

2007-11-25 Thread Dane Trethowan
Hi all!

Ok, I've had some private email on this topic, as listers will know I store
my CD collection using Cue and FLAC files and then convert them to MP3, AAC+
or whatever format I feel appropriate or others may want.

Now the 40 million dollar question which someone asked and apparnetly I
neglected to mention on list, how can a user of this system convert CD'S
quickly and easily? Well I don't go shouting about Easy CD DA Extractor for
nothing, just go into Windows Explorer, select the cue sheets of the CD'S
you wish to convert, select Easy D DA Extractor from the Windows Context
menu, select Convert and Easy CD DA Extractor will be launched.

Make adjustments in the file conversion tab as to the format you want, where
you want the output files placed and so forth, once you're ready to convert
press the Convert Files button and away she goes, the Cue file gives
Easy CD DA Extractor instructions on where tracks start and end and thus the
software will export the tracks in the format you chose in the place you
chose etc. For those who don't have or don't wish to use Easy CD DA
Extractor? Well there are other utilities you can use which treat a cue and
FLAC file as a virtual audio CD so you can access that with whatever
ripper you choose.

Hope this helps

Well, if you don't have original media, like CD's, there's no need to
even worry about it, since the only thing you'd want to have in a
lossless format is original media content.

Exactly, that's why I suggested that list members have something like
Rollback on their computer, that way then can rollback to the point before
the installation was started, Windows System Restore doesn't always work
 for
 this.
Another point to ponder, when removing software through the add/remove
feature of Windows, unfortunately not all software is equal thus not all
software will be removed equally. For example some applications leave
 great
chunks of that application in the registry and on other parts of the
computer, this can be often hard to track down.

Hi. This is why it's really, really important to make sure that you
don't just click yes like a mad man when you're going through these
installs. I've had like 5 other people on the list I run have similar
issues, and I can't imagine how everyone misses these checkboxes to

. Now, because I chose the custom install instead of the standard
one, that's probably why the check boxes showed up. But anymore when
it comes to installing a media player, and yes sadly Winamp nowadays

Re: The advantages of flak?

2007-11-25 Thread Dane Trethowan
Ok, well firstly the Cue file isn't specific to the FLAC format, it
can be used with say a WAVE or any other lossless format but its
usually used with FLAC or wave.
The Cue file tells the Ripper, File Converter or Audio Editor about
the associated wave or FLAC file, how many tracks the original audio
CD contained, the start and end points of each track and so forth.
Any CD Ripping software which supports writing to wave or FLAC files
will as a general rule, support the generation of cue sheets but you
have to be sure to turn this feature on. Such rippers which will do
this are Easy CD DA Extractor, Exact Audio Copy and Max Ripper, Easy
CD DA Extractor and Exact Audio copy will also read from Cue files for
the conversion to other formats such as MP3 but Max Ripper will not at
this time, I believe that this feature is in the pipeline for a future
version.
Hope this helps.

I also have VLC Media player and it's a very interesting little
program. It plays some file types better than others on my system and
if you have your computers on a network it works great. Now, this
Winamp issue...I've been using Windows in all its versions for 10
years, 95, 98 SE, XP and I'm sure at some point, i'll even give into
Vista. But in all that time, I can say with absolute certainty that
Winamp has never caused my computer to crash, in other words just
running Winamp never made my computer crash. I would suspect that in
Dane's case, there are other issues with the computer he is using to
run Windows. It just saddens me that we have people trashing each
other's choices of an operating system, we all need to remember that
everyone's needs are different and while some prefer windows, others
prefer Apple Macks. Let's quit all the mean little jabs here.
You don't see me sitting there calling the apple mack a trashbox, so
I would expect that people would respect my choice even though they
may disagree with it. Come on now.

bothered investigating.
Anyhow, for those who want to try something tha's nice and small and
runs very nicely then have a look.

More about cue and FLAC files with Easy CD DA Extractor

2007-11-25 Thread Dane Trethowan
Gee! There are some amazing people on this list and thanks to you for
writing to me and pointing out some features of Easy CD DA Extractor that I
had no idea existed, I refer to my message where I talked about selecting
all the cue files from Windows Explorer, selecting Easy CD DA Extractor from
the Context menu and then selecting convert etc. Well a far easier procedure
has been pointed out to me, just go into the audio converter of Easy CD DA
Extractor and make your settings where appropriate, select add files or add
folder from the Edit Menu, select the type of file you wish to work with
(for example cue files), press enter and press the convert files button,
what could be easier, you can even set the software so that each converted
cue-FLAC pair shows up in its own directory according to the cue sheets
content.

Again thanks, this software is definitely worth the $49.00 I spent to buy
it. I still say that when it comes to ripping from CD that EAC still has the
edge but Easy cD DA Extractor is not far behind so there you have it, in my
opinion the 2 best rippers around.

Re: Easy CD DA Extractor: they've changed things

It sounds like the AAC format is extremely superior to MP3!

Well, in several tests I ran, when Easy CDDA first began supporting AACPlus,
files I ripped in this format were significantly smaller than the same
material ripped at the same bit rate, in any other format, even other
implementations of the AAC format, such as Apples m4a. also, although no one
has yet been able to explain this to me, when I rip to AACPlus, even though
the sample rate is set to 44khz, the files produced report 88KHZ. Finally,
whether for this reason or another, files ripped to AACPlus just sound more
present, to me, than files in any format that isn't AAC, AND, as I said,
AACPlus files are significantly smaller than any other AAC format.

Dana, I read about ACC a couple of years ago but it was in the context of
stream casting. How would its benefits apply to the storage of files on a
local machine? thanks

Okay. I'm not sure exactly what a read offset is. But I get your point about
tailoring the software to the brand/individual drive.

As I said, I've been very happy with Easy CDDA, especially since they
introduced the AACPlus format (I rip everything to AACPlus, 192). And, as
I've already paid for the professional version, and am thoroughly familiar
with its interface, I'm not eager to start from scratch with another
product. But, maybe, in a few months, when I've paid off some other
expenses, and am feeling bored, I'll give it a whirl. I assume they offer an
evaluation copy/period.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Well for example, each drive has its own read and write offsets so in
order to rip and write audio CD'S accurately it helps if you can set
the ripping software to match those read and write offsets. For
example, as a rule, the Pioneer DVD drives have a read offset value
of +48 and a write value of -18.

EAC (Exact Audio Copy) and if you've happily been ripping with Easy
 CD DA
Extractor then EAC will give you absolute heaven, its far more
 accurate than
Easy CD DA Extractor as it can be exactly paired to the drive or
 drives
you're using, Easy CD DA Extractor (like much else around) cannot.

I'm not familiar with EAC. Details, please. What makes it superior?
 I've
been happily ripping with Easy CDDA since version 4 or 5, I think.
 Can't
imagine an easier interface, or better results.

VLC Keystrokes

2007-11-25 Thread Dean Masters
A list of the default keystrokes for VLC Media Player can be found at:

http://www.keyxl.com/aaa4cff/235/VLC-keyboard-shortcuts.htm

In the preferences you can change the keystroke but with JAWS 8 I could only
hear the tag for the first five keystroke combinations so had no idea what
all the other keystrokes did.
